Movie Making in Amarillo By: Penni Bentley, Sr. Director of Communications “I think Amarillo is one of the best kept secrets for a film project,” commented Actor/Producer Téa Leoni in a planning meeting with local Chamber and film commission representatives on Wednesday. After coming off of a big budget film, Tower Heist in 2011, Leoni is looking to bring a smaller project to Amarillo in the fall of 2012. Ms. Leoni has strong family ties in Amarillo, and as a kid spent summers at her grandparents here in Wolflin. The late Virgil Patterson, known as a longtime banker and community leader at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, was a big factor in her decision to bring a project to the panhandle. She nostalgically commented how she “wished he was still around to see the great city that Amarillo has become.” Her uncle, Tom Patterson, served as Chamber President/CEO Gary Molberg the Amarillo Chamber president for 8 years prior with Actor/Producer Téa Leoni to Gary Molberg taking the reins in 1997. Patterson initiated the meeting with the Chamber last month about his niece's project knowing our office could provide assistance in logistics for lodging, meals, locations and local film connections. After a two hour meeting Wednesday, we got a great idea about what the movie project will involve to shoot in Amarillo in September. This comedy centers around a newly-single woman bringing her kids back to where she grew up, and redefining her role in providing for her kids and helping care for her aging parents. There are some great comedic names tentatively lined up to play alongside Leoni that will be released in the near future. "The chamber is very excited about this project for our city. It means great revenue, potential jobs, and exposure for Amarillo," said Gary Molberg, Chamber President/CEO. "We're always proud to show off our hometown and its people and unique places."

R4RW? Ready for the Real World Prepares High School Juniors By: Becky Zenor, VP Quality of Life The Sixth annual Ready for the Real World was held on January 18, 2012 at the Civic Center. Approximately 1,850 high school juniors from the four AISD high schools attended sessions on Career Choices, Living on Your Own, Education and Training, and Managing Your Own Money. This popular event gives students the opportunity to better prepare themselves for college, trade or vocational school and/or the workforce. For the fourth year, the day began at 9 am with a welcome from Jonathan Sprinkles, a motivational speaker from Houston. The students attended 4 sessions, had lunch and ended the day by visiting with college representatives and participating in community service projects. We appreciate the hard work from the committee composed of representatives from the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, AISD, WTAMU, Happy State Bank, high school counselors and sophomore and junior high school students representing all four high schools. This project could not take place without the following sponsors: Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, AISD, Josephine Anderson Charitable Trust and the Mays Foundation. Upper Right: Denise Blanchard with committee members made up of Sophomores & Juniors from Amarillo, Caprock, Tascosa & Palo Duro High Schools.

Busy in CVC Getting ready for the busy summer season, CVC staff have been on the road promoting Amarillo. Director of Tourism Jutta Matalka is racking up the miles at important travel trade and consumer shows. She has been in McAllen, TX for the Winter Texan Consumer Show; Grapevine, TX for the American Bus Association Marketplace and Trade Show; in Las Vegas for the Go West International Trade Show and Houston for the Houston Vacation and Leisure Consumer Show. Each show helps place Amarillo in front of critical audiences, from bus operators to winter Texans to consumers. Convention Sales Manager Cherry Kay Abel and Director of Convention Servicing Mindy Bradley were in Austin for the annual Southwest Showcase sponsored by the Texas Society of Association Executives. It was a great way to touch base with about 300 meeting planners for state associations. VP Jerry Holt joined them for this important meeting. Abel, our Austin-based sales manager, was also in Tulsa for the Society of Government Meeting Planners Region 5 Partners in Education Conference. This Texas and Oklahoma meeting attracted over 100 government meeting planners. And Bradley serviced five different convention groups who generated over 800 room nights and $617,000 in visitor spending. The TTIA Unity Dinner in Austin, the state tourism industry’s largest annual meeting, is in Austin Feb. 21 & 22 and will attract nearly 1,000 people, including Holt, Matalka and Director of Communications Eric Miller. Miller also made media calls to important contacts and friends at Texas Highways, Texas Co-op Power, Texas Monthly and the Austin American-Statesman. And Miller is going to New York City the end of February to participate in the State of Texas Media Mission for three days. It’s a great way for Amarillo to get deskside appointments with publications like the Daily News, New York Times, Successful Meetings and Budget Travel, just to name a few. Also, Miller will visit with a host of top freelance writers. Convention Sales Manager Emilea White, with help from Holt and Bradley, made a great presentation to the Texas delegation for the National Square and Round Dancers Association and Amarillo will be the Texas city presented at the 2012 convention in Spokane, WA, in June to make our formal bid for the 2016 convention. If successful, this will be one of the largest groups to ever visit Amarillo. Sports committee meetings have been very successful this year, thanks to management by Convention Sales Manager Rick Matchett. Big thanks to the Education Credit Union and the Ambassador Hotel for their help. Matchett, who handles the sports market for the CVC, was in Dallas for the United States Specialty Sports Association regional meeting with more than 200 people in the sports event business. Chamber members are encouraged to visit the newly refreshed CVC web site at www.visitamarillotx.com. It features brighter colors, bolder graphics, better organization and updated copy. Be sure to tell a friend about it. Also, take a look on the new downtown development microsite at www.newamarillodowntown.com, a short web-based recap of plans underway in Amarillo. This site will be updated during the development to reflect the most recent news. Please share your feedback with Eric Miller at email@example.com.

We are so excited that in the very near future Amarillo will have a true work of art available for purchase. Ron Lammert, Historical Publishing Newtork, is producing a beautiful coffee table book of original photographs from Ralph Duke with narrative by Christine Wyly of the things that make Amarillo a great place to live, work and raise a family. Amarillo Faces, Places & Open Spaces will feature more than 80 local company and organizational profiles, and make a beautiful addition to any personal library or a great gift for that out of town visitor. Lammert Publications was overwhelmed by the response of companies wanting to be profiled in the book (over 80), so the project is taking longer than initially planned. This is the largest book they have produced to date, and they assure us that it is on track to finalize the last few profiles and be available this spring. We are so excited to have this unique piece available soon.

Sitting down with a celebrity can be so exciting, but also a little scary since you never know if they are going to be nice or an ego-centered Hollywood type. I'm happy to say that Téa Leoni couldn't have been nicer, and was the most down to earth person. She has a true fondness for our little town and she shared great memories with us in her 2-hour visit to the Chamber. We heard family stories and ideas that will truly make this movie project a piece of her heart. Those of us that have known and respected her uncle Tom Patterson for years just wanted to make sure she had a positive experience while here, and aren't really surprised she shares his gift of humor. Personally I've always loved her movies and remember watching her sitcom The Naked Truth in the mid 90s. I own Spanglish and have watched it and The Family Man many times. It's nice to put a real person behind those roles and find out you like her even more now. And if they need an outspoken redhead as an extra, I'll be happy to moonlight. As always, tell us how we are doing. Give us your suggestions, feedback, and input. Feel free to write on our Facebook wall. Get involved. We are YOUR Chamber.
