Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative Providing Cost-Effective Healthcare Benefits for Amarillo Area Businesses By: Kim T. Whitaker, UnitedHealthcare Director, Public Relations On October 7, 2009, the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, together with UnitedHealthcare, launched the Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative, designed to offer cost-effective health care benefits for Amarillo business owners. The goals of the program are to increase the number of workers with health care coverage, improve their well-being and access to care, and assist businesses in remaining competitive with a healthy work force. “With the continued decline of small businesses who offer health benefits, the new Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative responds to the needs of employers and employees who are looking for group health benefits at affordable premiums,” says Representative John Smithee, Chair of the Texas House Insurance Committee. “This is a positive step for our residents, business owners and the health care community.” Although cooperatives are not a new concept, recent efforts and diligence by the Amarillo Chamber to offer a cost-effective health care solution has turned this idea into reality. Working with the Texas Legislature, elected officials, area hospitals and UnitedHealthcare, the Amarillo Chamber successfully developed the Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative. This initiative is now poised to provide new health coverage options for business owners, expand consumer choice, emphasize personal responsibility for health care and focus on wellness and prevention. Gary Molberg, President, Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce has spent many hours re-

searching insurance health care products that would benefit our members, future members, and in general our community and region. Today we are proud that we are unveiling our plan.” Health plans offered through the Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative are available to business owners who are members of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce. Businesses that enroll with UnitedHealthcare through the Chamber will receive a 7% discount on select medical plans and have an option for saving 5% on their bundled dental and vision plans. UnitedHealthcare offers a broad network of quality, cost-effective physicians and health care professionals in Amarillo including Baptist St. Anthony’s and Northwest Texas Hospitals as well as a number of other facilities in the region. Scott Flannery, CEO of UnitedHealthcare North Texas, said: “UnitedHealthcare has long offered tailored health benefit solutions for Amarillo businesses and their employees. As we help launch the Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative, our team of professionals is dedicated to maintaining excellent service to our customers and health care provider partners.” Business owners interested in the Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative should contact their insurance agent or the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce for more information at (806) 373-7800, or visit the healthcare section on

Volunteer of the Quarter Chamber Membership Council Salutes: Steve Berner, Rabern Rental Center

By: Penni Bentley, Director of Communications The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Steve Berner, Co-Owner, Rabern Rental Center in Amarillo as the Volunteer of the Quarter. When selecting our volunteer to highlight, the Chamber staff gives input and feedback about how an organization or individual has gone above and beyond in their support of the Chamber and our events. We pick the person, but then we seek input from those that know the individual best; family, co-workers and friends. When selecting Steve Berner, we were given a 3 inch 3-ring binder full of letters of appreciation, inner office memos, and newspaper clippings touting the generous efforts of Steve and the Rabern Rental family and staff. It is clear how much he not only loves and supports the Chamber, but the Amarillo community, its businesses, and its children. “The morals and sense of responsibility that Gene Rahil and Steve Berner had when opening the doors in 1984 are what have kept us going strong for 25 years. Steve has always told every employee to treat everyone the way you would want to be treated,” says Seth Havens, Manager, Rabern Rental Center. “It is a blessing to work for a company that is willing and able to lend their services to those in need. Our owners have allowed Rabern Rental to open our doors and our hearts to this great city.” Steve’s friend of thirty years, Kevin Hawkins, had this to say: “This guy would give anyone the shirt off his back, and is always doing stuff for friends. He does what he says and his word is as good as gold. He is a great family guy and takes care of his wife, Traci, and daughter, Haylee, and loves them very much.”

Editor’s Corner

By: Penni Bentley, Chamber Director of Communications I love fall. You get so many wonderful, warm colors outside. Granted, depending on the wind, sometimes the leaves don't stick around long, but if you take time to look around and enjoy it while it’s here, it really is magnificent. I like to think of what autumn represents too. It isn't that things are dying, but more that they are allowing for new growth in the spring. Sometimes you have to shed the old to make room for the new. It can also represent the hard or trying times you go through before you can appreciate something better in the future. Fall means Thanksgiving is right around the corner with all of the warm and wonderful flavors that remind you of home and family. When at least one day out of the year, we remember to stop and say ‘thank you’ and be happy with what we have been given rather than what we have not. In terms of my work here at the Chamber, fall makes me reflect on the previous year and be thankful for: 1) that I have a great job with lots of creative freedom, 2) I work with some of the best people on earth, and 3) that the Amarillo community is so supportive of the Chamber with sponsorship, membership and leadership. Because of that support, we can focus our efforts on helping any and all business or organization succeed and prosper no matter their size. Our new Healthcare Cooperative is a great example of this Amarillo community pulling together for a good cause. In the fall spirit of shedding the old, we’ve been kicking around the idea of a new Chamber tag-line. The old one (which we try not to use often) was It Pays To Belong. So my challenge is to you...the members...tell us what you think should be a new tag-line that represents the Chamber and what we do. Everyone has a different reason for being a member of the Chamber. Some do it for the networking events, others for the publicity in newsletters and on our websites, some for the healthcare benefit, and there are probably a hundred other reasons. We’d like to hear from you. If you could sum up the Chamber in a phrase, what would you say? Send your suggestions to me at You might get highlighted in the newsletter, or get some fabulous prize yet to be determined. There is no fine print on this “contest”, just know that if you give us something great and we want to use it, we can...for free...of course. Excuse me now while I turn up The Byrds singing Turn Turn Turn, be cause there is a time to every purpose, under Heaven.

So as always, tell us how we are doing. Give us your suggestions, feedback, and input. Get involved. We are YOUR Chamber.
