Thank you to the many members who submitted their experiences related to pharmacist prescribing, as requested in the July issue of Section News. A strategy to deal with the issue is being developed. Primary Care Action & Project Plan

The AMA is currently working with the Primary Care Alliance (PCA) Board to develop a Primary Care Action & Project Plan. The objective of the plan is to provide physician leadership in areas of system need as well as responding to the changing primary care environment (e.g., Family Care Clinics). The AMA Board of Directors is supportive of this strategy and has asked the PCA Board to oversee its development and subsequent implementation. Stay tuned for more information.

 FCC discussion and input

 PCN branding

In March 2012, the PCN Physician Leads endorsed the principles and direction contained in a draft vision paper that was created by the Edmonton Zone PCN Physician Leads. Following this, the paper was shared with the Primary Care Alliance (PCA) and has been incorporated into the AMA’s Vision for Family Care Clinics discussion paper. The paper explores how family care clinics (FCCs) and primary care networks (PCNs) can work together to provide quality health care for Albertans. The paper is intended to provide a starting point for further discussion and consultation. The PCN Physician Leads Executive will continue to work with the PCA Board regarding issues surrounding FCCs and PCNs.

Discussions are underway to build awareness of PCNs, their important in primary care, as well as their successful outcomes. The PCN Physician Leads will be looking at initiatives and strategies to identify and promote primary care and the services provided by PCNs. PCN Physician Leads Forum

The PCN Physician Leads Forum (October 26-27) will feature several sessions, including: • Discussions around how PCNs can optimize their viability in a changing landscape. • PCN community engagement.

Click here to download the AMA discussion paper.

• Current activities and strategies around primary care in Alberta.

 PCN Crossover Policy Subcommittee

PCN Executive Directors will be involved in the Friday sessions discussing PCN viability and community engagement.

The PCN Physician Leads Executive considered a request that a subcommittee be formed to look at options and make recommendations on a PCN Crossover Policy that can be adopted by all PCNs. Current Primary Care Initiative Committee (PCIC) policy stipulates that a physician can belong to only one PCN, with that PCN receiving the per capita funding from the physician’s patients. However, with a number of physicians working in multiple locations, this has caused a crossover of services but not funding. This issue stems from the current Four Cut Funding Methodology for PCNs. Discussions are underway to address issues surrounding this methodology and may provide other options for PCN funding.

Register for the forum today. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Ertman by email – Dates for the 2013-2014 forum dates have been revised due to scheduling issues. For 2013, the dates are March 8-9 and October 18-19. For 2014, the dates are March 7-8 and October 3-4.

 Primary Care Funding Proposal Subcommittee

The Primary Care Funding Proposal Subcommittee held their first meeting on March 27. It will formulate recommendations, provide guidance and give advice with respect to a more coordinated approach for primary care providers to submit proposals for the $75 million fund established by Alberta Health to enhance primary care delivery. At this time, the subcommittee is awaiting a response from Alberta Health on the status of these funds and requirements for submission.

Section of Rural Medicine Dr. Allan Garbutt, President T 403.562.8804 F 403.562.2905 ďż˝ Great news for doctors in rural communities

The Federal Government is now offering to forgive portions of student loans to physicians and other health care professionals who began work in rural communities after April 1 of this year. Eligible doctors can receive forgiveness on Canada Student Loans of up to $8,000/year for as long as five years, or a maximum of $40,000. This of course is based on their continuing to practice in an eligible location for that time. There are similar programs for nurses and nurse practitioners as well.
