Welcome to our May catalogue.

We hope that you and your families are coping in these trying times. Janet has tried to put together a collection that will hopefully bring a smile to your face, and tempt you to pick up the phone and treat yourself to something special! As a mail order business we are encouraged to keep working away and we will continue to do so for as long as we can get deliveries and make shipments.

These are certainly times, the like of which we have never experienced before. The support for our key workers and appreciation of the help given by many to those who are at risk shows the best side of human nature. With two members of our family on the front line we are constantly thinking of the huge efforts being made by our skilled and dedicated medical staff. We all have to do what we can to get through this but I suspect that the world that emerges will be different; hopefully kinder and slower. We will certainly appreciate the things that we are currently unable to enjoy.

Since we operate Goviers with a small team, most working from home anyway, we have been able to carry on largely unchanged; although you will only find Janet and I answering the phones at present. If we are not able to take your call please do leave us a message and we will get back to you as soon as we are free. Our warehouse is currently run by Janet working on her own, and I hold the fort on the phones while the packing takes place and then we swap over so I can do the daily run to the Sorting Office with our carefully packed parcels.

Many of our suppliers are not able to produce at present so we are focussing on ranges that we have limited stock of here and from suppliers that are still able to despatch, even if they are not currently manufacturing. Some of our V.E. Day ranges are currently locked inside factories but as soon as things start to return to normal, we will have those with us.

Despite the difficulties our suppliers have been very supportive in providing us with details of their new ranges, this has allowed us to feature a surprising number of pieces in this issue which you will not have seen before. We are delighted to be able to support UK manufacturers like Moorcroft and Halcyon Days and are grateful for their support of us. There are new ranges from both these world class companies and as usual they have excelled themselves with the design and attention to detail. There may be a wait for some of the items but many are available.

One of the most popular new ranges since we took over the custodianship of Goviers has been Richard Cooper bronzes.

I started working with Richard in around 1995 and was delighted to be able to renew that contact in July last year when we took on the business. The Peace figurine developed to mark the 75th anniversary of V.E. Day has been one of the most popular so far and that edition is almost fully subscribed. We have now added Richard’s range of miniatures to our selection, these are sold under the Butler & Peach brand. These delightful works of art are produced with the same care as their larger sculptures, ideal as a gift for you; or for someone else. We are happy to gift wrap items that you want sent as gifts and include a message if required.

There is no charge for this service during these troubled times.

Steiff is also proving to be very popular and we have a number of new launches available. The limited edition pieces sell out very quickly and we only have a small number of each allocated to us from the worldwide edition. Isabella, Amanda’s daughter, was very lucky to have two new Steiff pieces at Easter, and very cute they were too. Well we had to have a look before they left!

With challenges being round every corner at the present we have not found it easy to get a printer to produce this month’s catalogue.

If you do have an email address please make sure we have that so that we can update you with new launches and information if posting becomes more difficult. This also allows the Royal Mail to provide tracking numbers and delivery information.

It just remains for me to wish you all well and hope that together we can defeat this virus and move on to better times.

The 75th Anniversary of V.E. Day This year was due to see many celebrations throughout the world to mark the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe and the end of the war for many. The current pandemic has meant the postponement of many of the public celebrations but hopefully these will be able to take place when things are back to some normality. At Goviers we wanted to create a range that was not only a fitting tribute to the many who gave their lives to defend us, striking parallels to the situation today, but also celebrated the skills of the craftsmen and women in the UK. We hope that what we have developed is a suitable collection for such an historic event.

Our own ranges of bone china and jewellery are made in Stoke on Trent and Birmingham respectively. Our Caithness and Royal Crown Derby paperweights are both made in the UK and are highly limited editions. The Royal Scot range is hand engraved in the UK. There is much symbolism associated with great events and this is no exception. The Bulldog has long been seen as a sign of the British spirit and unrelenting courage. Both again things that have close parallels to the work being done by our frontline teams at this very challenging time. Our great wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill has long been associated with the Bulldog, partly I suspect due to looks, well they do say that owners often resemble their dogs!

In looking into the history surrounding V.E. Day we found many wonderful quotes from Churchill, many that were as relevant today as they were back then. I am sure many of us have been inspired by the positivity, sheer zest for life and appreciation of others shown by the remarkable Captain Tom. We felt this quote was apt.

“One man with conviction will overwhelm a hundred who have opinions.”

Winston Churchill’s legacy includes a long list of historical achievements but also quotes that continue to inspire us today. This seems an apt and timely one.

“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

We all want to thank you for your support of Goviers over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed having more time to talk to you when you have rung. We also appreciate your patience as some of our new ranges are held up at factories that are not currently working. Our V.E. Day ranges will be delivered once things return to some normality and we, along with many others, will be marking this historic event in September.

oppies and cornflowers are both symbols of World War I and World War II. In the Commonwealth, poppies represent soldiers who lost their lives, as the flowers red petals poignantly emerged in the churned-up battlefields. The French equivalent, le bleuet, or cornflower is less well known, but artificial cornflowers are sold around 8th May and the funds raised go to former combatants. Today both flowers represent peace, or paix in French. On her selection of four vases and a framed plaque, Emma has applied a bouquet of bright red common poppies and vibrant blue cornflowers, some of which fade to mauve in the distance. Sheaves of harvest corn burst from the bunch, complete with delicate herringbone patterns tubelined within.

MOORCROFT • V.E. DAY COLLECTION

D

uring both World Wars, craftspeople at Moorcroft turned their hands to the war effort. William Moorcroft, above military service age, began to lose his male staff as they marched off to war and instead received growing orders from the War Office. The company made white tableware for the officers’ messes, and one such vase, classified in the Moorcroft Museum as ‘Toothbrush holder - Officers Mark 1,’ inspired Nicola who proceeded to resurrect the shape, over 75 years since it was last used. Not only has Nicola revived a shape created over a hundred years ago but she has also used a flower never seen in Moorcroft design before, aptly named, the toothbrush flower. Dendrobium Secundum is a species of flowering orchid and has a toothbrush shaped flower-head with bright pink petals.

Nicola hones in on the individual petals in order to create dashing flourishes, but chose a dusty-blue toned colour palette instead of bright pink. Art Deco banding, typical of the years from 1910 leading up to World War II, are filled with overlapping scallops reminiscent of William’s designs during the 1930s and 1940s.

northern reaches of the Western Front that it played a crucial role in both world wars, when the threat of invasion was very real. Windmills are icons of the region and were once a focal point in every community providing employment and producing vital flour, to feed the British population. Throughout the Twentieth Century windmills became disused were decommissioned and demolished. Nicola’s design is a reflection of a time of peace and calm, before war planes soared the skies and sirens rang through the air. This peaceful design features remembrance red poppies amongst sprays of corn in luscious green fields - a vision of a land at peace.

Emma’s inspiration came from a visit she made to a nature reserve managed by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust called Rose End Meadows. The reserve is full of wildflowers, from bluebells and buttercups to bee orchids and great burnet. On this vase Emma uses great burnet, wild anemones and cowslips to create a stunning myriad of flowers.
