Spring has finally sprung! Seasonal allergies aside, spring has always been my favorite time of the year. I finally retire the over-the-knee boots I wore 17 too many times this season and frantically start googling “how to lose 15 lbs by summer”. The sun shines a little bit brighter and I feel myself pulled outdoors by what can only be explained as the gravitational force field of mother nature! My morning coffee feels slightly more indulgent and zen-like now that I can drink it on the patio. Spring has always been a “pivot point” for me, a time to look back on all of the New Year’s resolutions I made (and may or may not have kept), and a time to start my annual Spring clean! Take some time out for yourself this season. De-clutter (your home and your head), lighten your load a little, and reunite with the great outdoors. The next time you hear from me we’ll be nearing 120 degree temps, so remember, Spring is short-lived; get it before it’s TOO hot! DANI BALD-BRUNI

9

And so it goes. The shift of season graces us with perfect temperatures, light breezes, and peaceful vibes. Spring. Bright, soft, and alive. Swaying past winter, veering its lovely face towards summer. Allowing us a bit of serenity before the sun sparks copious amounts of heat and pool party chaos. Whether an overwhelming desire to refresh your home beckons, or you’re just looking for something new to inspire your every day, Vol. 4 // LIGHT was created with you in mind. Our best-kept secrets are on display: textures, pops of color, a trip to L.A., and florals on repeat. Take advantage of the weather in these next days to come. Connect with the outdoors. Challenge yourself to go somewhere new. Minimize. Organize. Prioritize. Life is too short to put things off until tomorrow. Peace, Love, and Peach! LACEY MURRAY

I LOVE MY Home Owner, Brittney Tyler Designer, Dani Bald

L

ongtime client and friend, Brittney Tyler, reached out to me when she and her husband decided it was time to move their 2.5 year old daughter into her own room. I knew I wanted a design that was fun and girly, but mature enough that her daughter

could grow into the space over the next couple of years. It’s no secret that every little girl loves the color pink, but I just couldn’t commit to bubble

gum pink paint on the walls. We decided to paint the walls a soft gray color and bring the pink and blush tones in with the bedding and accessories. We also decided to go a bit more neutral when choosing the bed frame and other furniture pieces. A white bed frame and a light-washed wood dresser made the space feel large and bright. The bulk of the budget was spent on quality furniture pieces. Therefore, we had to be more conscious of costs when purchasing wall art and accessories. Fortunately, we were able to find some really fun pieces that didn’t break the bank! The art above her bed is from Target and was the color inspiration for the room. Bed side accessories were all Home Goods finds. A

REHAB C R Y S TA L D O W N S Las Vegas Locals, Julian and Lacey Murray Backyard Edition

A

s the weather gets warmer the idea of spending more time in the sun becomes a reality. Local couple, Julian and Lacey

Murray, started dreaming of ways to bring

a little fantasy into their outdoor space. Having a large backyard and a pool is something most Las Vegans yearn for. At first glance the Murrays were fortunate with their backyard. However, in all actuality, the yard was something a little less than appealing. The large plot was filled with weeds, overgrown trees, and mangled shrubs. Their goal was an outdoor area that felt like a retreat. One where they could grill and chill. A serious overhaul was needed.

19

A M A G A Z I N E This is your first home. How important was the backyard space when you began your home search? T H E M U R R A Y S : We both agreed, living in Las Vegas, a single-story property with a pool and spa was not negotiable. We were open minded in terms of the lot size and other amenities. Coming from the Midwest, we love to be outdoors. Yes, even in the extreme heat. What were your first thoughts when you laid eyes on the backyard? T M : When we first saw the backyard, we fell in love. In person, it was like a secret garden style pool. Everything was overgrown, but it had a lovely presence. There was something magical about swimming within an overgrown garden. Between the layout of the house and the backyard, we were sold. Within a month the home was ours and we moved in! Was the yard the first upgrade to tackle? T M : Aside from needing a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the interior, the house was in great shape. Not having to spend a ton on the interior gave us a bigger budget and more time to focus on the backyard. In the

backyards. I knew what rocks I wanted and already planned for a small elevated patio. I even drafted out some sketches. A Newtex rep came out and measured the backyard to confirm the amount of space we had to work with. After a brief conversation about our wants and needs, they presented us with a plan. From there, I changed about seventy-five percent of it. They were good sports. How long did the rehab take from start to finish? T M : The backyard remodel took 4-6 months from the time we had the first couple of trees removed to completion. Coming up with and approving the concept was the most time consuming. The install itself took only a week. It was so interesting to watch the transition.

23

Pro-tip : A D D I N G D E T A I L Lighting is a great way to create ambience. Add accent lights wherever you can to highlight backyard focal points. Don’t be afraid to mix faux plants in with your real plants- it’s an easy way to create a lush look without the hassle of keeping anything additional alive. Pop into your local Michaels or Home Goods for great deals on faux plants. Personal touches are what set your house apart from your neighbor’s. Incorporate fun, unique decor elements (like the elephant bottle opener below) to add personality to your outdoor space. People will notice!

CHEESE BOARD Building the perfect cheese board is easy! Start with 3 cheeses with a variety of tastes and textures. Add some sweet and savory accompaniments: Try dried apricots for something sweet and rosemary-seasoned marcona almonds for something savory. Finish with crackers.

ESTA Coffee Roasters started out of necessity. A love, nay, passion for coffee, and the drive to share something great with Las Vegas’ local community. VESTA strives to provide the finest quality, not because it’s something that will make

them successful, but because it’s the right thing to do. VESTA prides itself on sustainable sourced green coffee from around the world. When possible, VESTA always sources organic, fair trade, bird friendly, and Rainforest Alliance certified coffees. In a society overpopulated by Starbucks drive-throughs and single cup Keurigs, VESTA invites customers to get back to the basics. Whether you’re stopping in on your way to work, working remotely from their clean and modern interior, or just cruising through for a midday pick-me-up, you’re guaranteed a friendly smile, an artfully prepared beverage, and one hell of a cup a joe.

I also had the goal of having my next career be something that I could ride my bike to (after years of rush hour traffic). I’m a big supporter of walking and riding a bike if you can. With a Starbucks on every corner and numerous coffee shops in and around Downtown, what do you think makes VESTA different? J H : There are a few main reasons: 1. We don’t roast our beans to acrid burnt roast levels. 2. We only roast and sell Specialty-Grade coffee. 3. We provide a more memorable and highquality experience. VESTA’s space itself is very bright and cozy. We can see why some people would skip going to the office to work from there. What were some things you had to take into consideration when designing the space? J H : My main concerns initially were getting

more natural light into the building and making it feel open, as it is a very skinny and long shaped building. There were only windows on the frontage of the building. So, we pulled in natural light from the south by putting in a glass roll up door, and window door in the back. We played with contrasting monochromatic color to make the ceiling feel further away, opening up the long narrow space. We accented with white oak and brass for pops of natural tones and shine, which I think warms up the space but we can still keep that minimal feel. Do you guys have any signature drinks our readers should know about? J H : We have a few. Our Macadamia-Almond Latte is a crowd favorite with house made macadamia-almond milk. My secret recipe 77

SOLID ADVICE THE ENERGY AUDIT BY DA N I B A L D - B R U N I

C

leaning is to spring what getting fat is to December. Seemingly out of nowhere, or simply due to peer pressure, spring brings with it the sudden urge to purge. I frantically roam the

house with that crazed look in my eye - the one that dares my husband to challenge me. I fill trash bags to the brim while bursting out into what can only be explained as maniacal laughter. I feel powerful. I feel brave! If you’re an OCD, type A, organizational enthusiast like me you normally categorize your clutter into one of three categories: throw away, donate, or keep. I think labeling your “crap” is a crucial part of the justification process. It makes the tossing part just a tad easier. I’m going to safely assume there are other areas of your life that would benefit from the same approach (a little less maniacal laughter, of course). If you’re willing to invest a weekend to de-clutter your house, you owe it to yourself to spend the same amount of time, or more, de-cluttering your mind and your heart space. If you’re ready to lighten your load proceed to page 88 for our “Life Audit” checklist. A

88

89

LAST THOUGHTS BY DA N I B A L D - B R U N I

Take spring cleaning beyond your desk, closet, and cabinets. Use this checklist to figure out what you’re carrying around that no longer serves you, then lighten your load!

TIME AUDIT Spend a few days tracking how you spend your time, then examine where the bulk of it is going. Are you doing things that make you happy? We all have to spend much, if not most, of our time on things like work, household chores, and caring for family. But this time audit is a chance to look at your day and carve out a little extra space for yourself and the activities that bring you joy.

M E N TA L E N E R G Y A U D I T Practice a little mindfulness this season and pay attention to where your thoughts go throughout the day. What is taking up the most headspace for you? Do you find that certain worries are nagging at you? Is space being taken up by things you wish you could say or do, but can’t seem to actualize? Explore some different ways to clear out your mental space: try five minutes of daily meditation, start journaling, or practice expressing yourself more assertively with others.

FRIEND AUDIT Are you surrounding yourself with people who bring out the best in you? Pay extra attention to how you feel when spending time with your friends. Are you spending that time laughing, giving and receiving support, and having fun? Or are you spending that time feeling stressed out, trying to avoid a fight, or feeling bad about yourself? If it’s the latter, you might be in a toxic relationship, and it might be time to move on. Space in your life is limited and you are entitled to reserve that space for people who bring positivity.

S PAC E A U D I T Take your traditional spring cleaning one step further. While going through your belongings and deciding what to donate and what to keep, pay attention to what you are struggling to get rid of. Do you find yourself holding on to certain items waiting for a “special occasion”? It might be a beautifully embroidered tablecloth or your wedding china, or maybe a special piece of clothing or jewelry that you’re waiting for the right moment to wear. Instead of getting rid of these items, choose to use them! You don’t have to wait for a special occasion to use your most beautiful and special belongings. So eat pizza off of your wedding china and wear that silk scarf to the movies. You are special and life is your occasion.

TECHNOLOGY AUDIT Chances are that when you do your time and mental energy audits, you’ll find that technology and social media are taking up quite a bit of space. This can be a tough habit to break, so start small. Give yourself some easy-to-stick-to limits like no social media one hour before bed and keeping your smart phone and laptop out of the bedroom. If you want to go further, try giving yourself one day a week off from checking your email and social media. In a time when we’re more connected than ever, it’s important to reminder ourselves that sometimes technology can wait while we enjoy a little rest.
