If you’re picking up this magazine for the first time, welcome! If you’re joining us for a second time, I’ll assume you liked our first issue and decided to come back for more. In which case, thank you. No really, thank you. Some people write only for themselves, others write to have their words read. I write because I want you to read. I write because I want to connect. Publishing the first issue of AMagazine was ulcer-inducing to say the least, but above all else it was creatively liberating, and I feel like we (you + me) really connected. P H O T O G R A P H B Y G E O R G E H A D O WA N E T Z

There’s something about this time of year that lures me back to the days growing up in the Midwest. The air gets crisp and the colors turn from vibrant greens to fiery oranges and deep reds. The sky shares an even more brilliant blue than eyes have seen all year.

We all are swimming through life in one form or another. Furiously kicking and gracefully treading. Finding moments of rest until we reach a point that takes our breaths away. That one thing that you know you were meant to do. Over time, it can change but you never stop reaching to feel completely at peace with what you have chosen to dive into.

This summer has been a whirlwind of travel. I live for every moment of it. I flew from here to there and could’t help but absorb the beauty and inspiration each place had to offer. I poured every experience and idea, from every angle, into this late autumn issue.

Being a creative comes naturally. Building this magazine from a single thought, ground up, is beyond rewarding. Though summer has come to an end, the desert air is nothing short of perfect. So take chances, look for beauty every where, and don’t forget to dream a bit. Everything is possible.

One of the clearest moments was diving into the crystal azure waters of Lake Tahoe. It’s hard to put the rush that came over me into words. Not just the icy waters appeal, but a fresh, invigorating dose of confidence. It triggered a new perspective on my life. And where I see this publication going.

All My Best,

LACEY MURRAY

I LOVE MY

Bathroom

Las Vegas Home Owner, Jo Ann Huerta Binette

W

hen we started the rehab on the house I was aiming for slightly rustic but fully functional. I wanted to utilize every room to the fullest. The master

bathroom was the smallest space in the house. Unfortunately, we had to remove the only window that provided natural light because I absolutely had to have dual sinks. Contrary to popular belief, husbands take up a lot of bathroom space. I immediately knew we were going to have to go with white cabinets and lots of lights to make the room seem bigger and brighter. The quartz counter tops were a splurge but I knew I wanted white with hints of gray. I was inspired by the Golden Ages of Hollywood when starting this project. I knew my accent piece would be the flooring, since I had used such neutral colors elsewhere. I loved all the patterned tile. Who knew tile could be so exciting? They complimented the gray striation in the counter tops so well. I went with the square cut under-mount sinks because of the clean lines. The under-mount sinks inspired me to search for mirrors with similar lines. The art deco mirrors were the final touch in the bathroom. A

REHAB LACY LANE Maverick Design | Tatiana Cano, Lead Designer

T

his open, ranch-style estate brings cutting edge design to one of Las Vegas’ oldest historic neighborhoods. Originally constructed in 1962, this

vintage beauty was overdue for an interior face lift and a fresh coat of paint. With a little vision, and a lot of TLC, this custom home went from yesterday’s news to today’s headliner. We caught up with Maverick Design’s Lead Designer,

Tatiana Cano, to see what it took to bring this dated single story back to life.

The kitchen features exposed cabinets and a built in breakfast table. What was the motivation behind both of these choices? T A T I A N A : With such a large kitchen, keeping the cost down and an open concept were important. Instead of adding tons of cabinetry, we broke it up with the open shelving and a breakfast table. This created a great area to come together in the kitchen, and an opportunity for an interesting chandelier as a centerpiece for the space.

Pro-tip : B R A G - W O R T H Y H A R D W A R E Like putting on diamond earrings or new cuff links, changing kitchen cabinet hardware is an easy way to freshen an existing space without a lot of expense. Installing new knobs, pulls, and hinges can be done in a weekend.

New paint is always the best option! Even if it just means painting your front door. This will give your home a quick face lift. We’re loving the playful tile in all of the bathrooms. What inspired these choices? Are there certain colors or patterns that work better in smaller bathrooms? T A T I A N A : A cohesive color scheme with some special interest to each space was the motivation for the bathroom tile choices. Larger scale patterns and darker colors work well in large bathrooms. However, it’s smart to stay away from both in smaller spaces. The light colors and simple textures work well, making the bathrooms feel larger. 21

way to spice up your fall style.

gloves // hot tap water // squirt dish soap shabby old jeans

SIMPLE STEPS

STEP 1 Gather all your supplies. Put on our cozy playlist and mix up the perfect indigo. Fill your 3 gallon bucket with the hottest tap water possible. STEP 2 Glove up and let the mixing begin. We wanted a rich deep indigo denim. Our recipe was ¼ bottle navy blue Rit and 1 full bottle of denim blue Rit added to 3 gallons of HOT water. Stir in a squirt of dish soap. *Note - want a darker black blue? Toss in a little black Rit dye!

STEP 3 Thoroughly soak jeans in warm water prior to dying. This encourages even distribution of dye. Completely submerge jeans in the indigo concoction. Agitate every 10 minutes until desired effect. STEP 4 Kick back and relax. Prep your fall senses by pouring yourself a crisp, smoky, two-finger glass of Bowmore Darkest 15 year Scotch Whisky. Toss in a couple ice cubes, if thats your style. Turn up the tunes and sweater shop for the next 40 minutes while your jeans soak. STEP 5 Rinse and dry. Rinse your killer indigo drawers under cool water. Ring out the excessive dye. Hang to dry. STEP 6 Rock it! You’re the proud new owner of a pair of custom indigo jeans.

SIMPLE STEPS

STEP 1 Be resourceful! Consider possible pieces to dye and round up all your supplies. Protect your work surface with plastic and paper towels. STEP 2 Start binding your fabric. Use clamps, paper or binder clips, odd shaped wooden pieces, canning jar lids, rubber bands, and twine or string. Get creative! STEP 3 Add Indigo powder and water into your dye bottle. Ensure the lid is on tight and shake lightly. STEP 4 Apply dye to the fabric pieces, checking to make sure the dye has penetrated into folds but do not over saturate. For a soft gradient look, apply dye to the end of the fabric, dip the paint brush in water and blend the ink into a fade. STEP 5 Let dyed fabric sit for 6-8 hours. The longer they sit the more intense the color will become. STEP 6 Rinse well with cool water until access dye is removed. Cut rubber bands and string away from the pieces. SOLID ADVICE STRIPPING DOWN WITH STRANGERS BY DA N I B A L D

T

hey say that not all who wander are lost. I’d like to add that not all who attend Wanderlust yoga festival are looking to find

themselves. Alas, I think Dan found herself. Or at least the intimacy-averse, highly-inflexible part of herself (she also speaks in 3rd person now, because she’s “enlightened”). I’m kidding, chill. When I booked my ticket to Wanderlust, a 3-day yoga festival in Lake Tahoe, I didn’t ask many questions. I assumed we would engage in some downward dog type activities, drink a fair amount of Kombucha, and socialize with bearded men. None of which I’m totally opposed to. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I was excited, but was up for a weekend with my girlfriends and the idea of roughing it in a condo fully stocked with premium tequila and extra-quilted toilet paper.

94

As the festival grew closer, and life got more stressful, I started to grow more and more excited. Wanderlust was exactly what I needed. I would come back feeling recharged and totally Zen. Right? Not quite. After ingesting more kale than is humanly possible and succumbing to a couple of really public ugly cries, I found myself feeling quite the opposite. I felt drained. Vulnerable. Exposed. But why? Was dancing with half-naked strangers and singing in a tram full of random hippies out of my comfort zone? P H OTO G R A P H Y BY SA M AU ST I N

Apparently, yes. Very much so. Turns out I can talk to a complete, fully clothed, stranger about the weather, my day, or this and that. But talking to the same stranger about anything remotely personal makes me feel naked and afraid. While I can’t say I came back feeling recharged, I can say that I came back feeling extremely “awake”. I came back with a newfound awareness of those things that really make me squirm. The things that make my eyes well up and voice crack. And I really, really want to explore those things more. If attending a yoga festival, or getting naked with strangers in a densely wooded area isn’t your jam, I get that. But I still encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone (regularly). Look for the things that make you squirm. And ask yourself “Why?”. There is something really raw and beautiful about feeling vulnerable. And something really magical that happens when you let people in on that vulnerability. But I’ll let you experience that magic for yourself. Namaste, bitches.

LAST THOUGHTS B Y L A C E Y M U R R AY

M O O DY B L U E S It’s obvious, the more you move the more you groove. Moods improve and energy surges. With the ninth month of the year typically throwing us a bone as temperatures yield, we choose to embrace the short and cooler twenty-four hours, as daylight savings moves us forward an hour on November 6. Prepare to use that extra hour before your day - It’s now or next year!

HIKE IT OUT The weather is so lovely it’s hard to keep yourself indoor. So don’t! Check out a couple of these easy to moderate hikes as the heat wares itself down: Historic Railroad Trail (Easy). This gravel hugs the hills on the southern shoreline of Lake Mead. The railtrail offers panoramic views of the man-made lake through five railroad tunnels on its way toward Hoover Dam. White Rock Canyon (Mildy Hard). This 5.9 mile loop will take you down to the shores of the Colorado River and back. If you’refeeling frisky, following the random paths of fellow hikers taking the rather steep free-climb up to the layered hot springs. It’s definitely a walk to remember. Accessible from March until October.

B E AWA R E Are you an astrology junky, consumed by all things planetary, and convinced that the Universe is always looking out for you? If so, you probably already know that now is a time to be gentle with yourself. With Mercury finally out of retrograde (Aug 20-Sep 22), we can welcome the New Moon (Sep 30) and find a bit of peace and solace before the craze of the holidays sets in. Note to Self: the next Retrograde strikes Dec 19th and lasts through the 31st. Talk about wild timing.

FA L L F R E S H With cooler weather aiming it’s arrow our way, what a perfect time to start something new. For us Desert Dwellers, fall is the new spring! Clean out those closets. Organize all of those files on your computer. Consider channeling your inner creative and let paint flow on some paper or ink curve into a handwritten letter. Darlings, the world and everything in it is waiting to be yours. It’s time to take it!
