Image 155_10. Fungal Diseases These are conidiophores with conidia of Penicillium marneffei that were isolated from a splenic abscess. Penicillium spp. are known to cause penicilliosis, which usually affects immunocompromised individuals such as those with AIDS, or undergoing chemotherapy. P marneffei is normally acquired though inhalation of airborne spores.
