5 things to consider

prior to interviews

6

1.

Identify what is most important in your Selection experience. Achieving the position/title you desire or working with a specific house and/or culture? Is one prioritized over another? Does this change how you approach interviewing and information gathering?

2. 3.

Each house has a unique culture and this uniqueness means the same position may be different from house to house. Ask questions that clarify said differences.

Remember, being on staff is about being on a team. Row staff members regularly collaborate and work on tasks that go beyond job specific boundaries for the betterment of their communities! Be ready to discuss your strengths, challenges, and the roles you typically assume on teams.

4. 5.

Row houses and staffs are dynamic!

Official position offers are facilitated only through the Match.  Please take a few minutes to watch the video on page 5 to learn how the Match works.

Make an informed decision! Ask questions, gather info, educate yourself. You are seeking the best position and house fit. Gather as much info as possible via in-house interviews, conversations with friends, house profiles, etc. If you aren't sure how best to gather information email selection@lists.stanford.edu or simply stop by the Row Office (2nd Floor Lasuen)! 7

576 Coop - 35 Residents - RA - CM - 3 KMs - 2 OMs - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? 576 Alvarado (formerly known as Chi Theta Chi) has its roots in self-sufficiency. Our do-it-yourself ethos stands for student agency and skill building. Since its foundation in 1893, this abode has served as a bastion of student-autonomy, both functionally and spiritually. We are an open, loving community, and we keep it weird.  What qualities make a successful 576 staff team member? Given the added workload associated with the Chi Theta Chi experience, our managers are requisite to shoulder general house functioning, serving as leaders and providing support in residents’ undertakings. Managers lead by example, teaching new residents everything from day-to-day house maintenance skills (e.g. how to mow the lawn or caulk a shower) to the importance of taking on a DIY project (e.g. encouraging them to paint a mural). This is no small task, and requires a great deal of time spent with small numbers of residents at a time to be effective. Successful managers readily inculcate new residents into our house culture of responsibility and cooperation.  What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Work week, 'cause like blood, sweat, and tears. And Chi Theta Prom.  9

680 Self-Op - 56 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? Our awesome backyard and communal space. Everyone is very social, but there are still diverse social groups, which allows for a great mix! People are down to make new friends in their junior and senior year. Also, we have the best chef on campus, and we all eat together everyday. What qualities make a successful 680 staff team member?  We are a whole team, not just individuals fulfilling our roles. You have to be willing and excited about helping someone else out. What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Exotic Erotic in the spring is our most well known tradition and house event. While it is known as a great destination for folks around the campus, it is also very meaningful for our house as a unit. It involves participation and group creativity from the entire house. Teaming up to throw something great means a lot for the house.

717

Self-Op - 39 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? DO NOT APPLY HERE! It's FAR, the food is TERRIBLE, the people who draw in are BANAL and DIRTY, and the application process is too rigorous to be worth your while! What qualities make a successful 717 staff team member? The upper row is one of the best hidden secrets at Stanford, it's communities are on the fringes of campus and can grow in one of two ways. The people can grow incredibly tight and foster communities unseen anywhere else on campus, or they can be incredibly boring. To make 717 great we want staff members committed to building that community. We're looking for people that are adventurous, open, and are willing to put the team on their back; nothing is more rewarding than seeing a bustling community rally together and nowhere is it more evident than the upper row. P.S. it's easy to tell a bunch of friends to rank it high...not everyone has to be a stranger. What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? 717 boasts a community that bonds in the lounge long into the wee hours of the night, watching arguably terrible television shows and drinking inordinate amounts of tea from the famous tea shelf. The dedication of its inhabitants to the occupation of Its lounge is second to none, and you can o#en find residents or friendsnapping on the luxurious, green-patterned couches. The attitude of its residents also focuses on the phrase "No Hill, No Thrill" given the positioning of the house atop a steep hill, which denotes the house's ability to have fun at such high altitudes. In short, the traditions of 717 are as funky as its inhabitants and as random as its staff, which makes it the most amazing house at Stanford. 11

BOB

Self-Op - 58 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? One of the best parts about BOB is how different everyone is in the house. What qualities make a successful BOB staff team member? A successful BOB staff member will be positive, flexible and open to meeting new people. What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Our wedding themed Special Dinner is always one of the best events of the year!

12

CASA ITALIANA Theme - 51 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM - RCC - 2 ATAs

. What's the coolest thing about your house and community? Every year, Casa is ranked the most desired house on campus! As the most social self-op on the lower row, Casa is the perfect place to learn about Italian culture and also let loose! People want to live in Casa because of the unique, close-knit community, not just to be on The Row. On any given night of the week, residents can be found socializing in the kitchen, dressed up in costumes, learning about Italian music and movies, or enjoying the best food on campus. What qualities make a successful Casa Italiana staff team member? If you are looking for the best year of your life, apply to be on Casa staff! For next year’s team, we are looking for fun, outgoing, creative, and genuine people with a passion for Italy! We are obsessed with Casa and know you will be too! What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Our favorite tradition is the tri-annual Pizzeria, where the whole house comes together to cook an Italian meal for hundreds of people in the Stanford community!

13

COLUMBAE Coop- 52 Residents - RA - CM - 2 KMs - FM - CoopM -RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? LOVE + KALE. Also, a really cool thing about Columbae is that everyone owns the house -- no one is simply a resident. Whether it's blowing giant bubbles on the lawn, initiating drum circles in the pantry, or turning staples cook into the best dance party on campus, each Bean is empowered to make Columbae that much closer to the community they want it to be. What qualities make a successful Columbae staff team member? Put yourself in the shoes of a Columbae staff member: Do you love your house? Do you think your whole house is great? Do you believe you can do anything? Genuinely care about Columbae and your fellow Beans. Have a positive attitude even when the going gets tough. Believe in the ability of your staff as a team and what you as an individual can bring to that team.  What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Body painting is a tradition better enjoyed than observed; that's a fancy way of saying TRY IT. Body painting embodies comfort with oneself, freedom of expression, being in a safe space, and the vivid elation of having the privilege to do things differently. We want Columbae to be a place where we can share this kind of experience even when it's not a body painting occasion.

14

EBF

Coop - 53 Residents - RA - CM - 3 KM - OM - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? The coolest thing about EBF is the feeling of life in every part of the house and represented in everything housemates contribute to. The cluster, library, bar, and beyond are constantly occupied, and even if you manage to find a seemingly empty spot, something will let its presence known, whether it be the heat from a water heater just used or a random etching in the band room. EBFers past, present, and future reside in all of the house, all of the time. What qualities make a successful EBF sta team member? Creativity, balance, heart. What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Our favorite event is Creation Day where we use our imaginative noodles to assemble and build things for the house!

FRENCH Theme- 44 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM -2 ATAs- RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? Attracting students from diverse backgrounds and across academic fields, La Maison Francaise (French House) promotes strong community bonding through activities and events.  These range from quarterly house retreats (Santa Cruz, Lake Tahoe, and Napa Valley), to impressionist painting workshops, to cooking crepes, to watching international soccer matches.  This is home.

What qualities make a successful French staff team member? Staffing is a demonstration of true teamwork. Time management and accountability are necessary in undertaking specific staff roles while also contributing to the team. A great staff member at La Maison Francaise (French House) needs to be motivated and enthusiastic about organizing and participating in house events as we are the core to our community.

What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Our favorite French House quarterly event is Crepe Night, an evening where the entire house transforms into a restaurant. Residents and staff participate in food preparations, set-up, cooking, and waitering.  It is the ultimate house bonding experience, while also showing off our residence and French culture to the Stanford community

17

GROVE Self-Op - 34 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? We have a fun, strong community but the house isn't too loud, which makes for a great laid-back living arrangement.  On the flip side, we're right in the middle of the Row, so every party is a minute's walk away .  Enjoy raging in your friend's houses and then coming back at the end of the night to clean, quiet Grove.

What qualities make a successful Grove staff team member? Ability to see other's opinions and change your own opinion if it turns out you're wrong; dedication to the house; being outgoing and social and willing to work to build a community; commitment to working hard and performing duties even when the quarter gets tough.

What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Special Dinner -- yes, every house has a special D, but Grove goes big.  We have a ton of fun, every time, and the name "Grove" lends itself to some sweet themes.

18

HAMMERSKJOLD Coop - 31 Residents - RA - CM - 2 KMs - OM- FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? The Hamm community puts a great emphasis on the cleanliness of the house, but like other coops we embrace and encourage expression in a safe and open space. As the internationalthemed co-op, we also take pride in the variety of countries and cultures represented in our community, and we encourage cooks to bring international themes into their dinners. Furthermore, we have a vast and eclectic collection of loose-leaf teas and spices.  What qualities make a successful Hamm staff team member? A successful Hamm staff member is reliable, collective-minded, and dedicated to the house. Most importantly, a good Hamm staff member is responsible and approachable not only within the scope of his/her respective position, but as a staff member in general, who is part of the community and actively wants to spend time in the house, as well as with the residents of the house.  What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? The Tie-Dye Co-op Potluck is the event we are most known for, and it is a great opportunity for all co-ops to mingle and share experiences. However, the biggest tradition we have would probably be our weekly in-house Friday happy hours. They are essential to the bonding of the Hamm community, and we o#en use these times as an opportunity for residents to share a theme project (a requirement for all Hamm residents) on a country or culture they have either experienced or are interested in--these have included a wide variety of fun presentations such as decorating sugar skulls for Día de los Muertos, a sushi-making workshop, folk dancing, foreign movie showings, and a Chinese New Year celebration.  19

HAUS MITT Theme - 35 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM- 2 ATAs- RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? Being in a small row house is the best, because the community is so tight knit. I love that Haus Mitt only has 37 people, because we can take bonding to the max.   What qualities make a successful Haus Mitt staff team member? Energy to invest in the relationships with the people you're living with. Again, because the house is so small, if you invest in the people, you'll get a great community out of it.  What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? The Eurolympics.

20

JERRY

Self-Op - 54 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? The coolest thing about Jerry is how close we have become as a community in just one quarter. With events like weekly s'mores bonfires, incredibly friendly people, and a gorgeous location that gives you just enough space to relax and pretend you're at summer camp on the edge of Lake Lag, Jerry has quickly become one the most welcoming and comforting cultures at Stanford for us this year. What qualities make a successful Jerry staff team member? Flexible: being able to help each other across designated roles when someone is having a tough day/week is key. Fun-loving: really think to be successful as a staff member and make people enjoy their time, you have to really like to have fun as well! What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Everything!!! If the community is there, we’re loving it!

21

KAIROS

Coop - 32 Residents - RA - CM - 2 KMs -OM- FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? We're a smaller, tight-knit cooperative house where everyone cooks and cleans. What particularly distinguishes us from other houses is that we're an arts-centric house that plays host to Stanford's fine and performing arts community, especially through events like Tuesdays in the Pool Room, Wine & Cheese, and weekly film screenings. What qualities make a successful Kairos sta team member? People who want to be involved in a community of people. You don't need to know anything about cooperative life, but you must be willing to learn! Compassion, confidence, and empathy are important! What's your favorite event or tradition in your house? Wine and Cheese is the obvious answer, but the first Sunday before the beginning of the school year is Garden Party, when we drink, eat food, paint the tables outside, and provide a great space for the community to get to know each other.

22

MARS

Self-Op - 37 Residents - RA - CM - KM - FM - RCC

What's the coolest thing about your house and community? Mars is a small house with a very strong community. There are really no designated roles, and we are always there to help each other plan and execute anything that our house needs. What's your favorite event or tradition in your house?   We have a super entertaining tradition of doing fun and interactive Special Dinners, where every resident has a role.
