BIOPHI LI C C LASSRO OM RE S E ARC H E XPERI MENT | LEW WENTZ GRA NT | Jun io r Year
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project was to design a classroom using biophilic design and analyze if the biophilic elements had an impact on student stress levels and information retention while in that classroom. I used SketchUp to create the design, and had the participants experience that space through Enscape while using virtual reality. RESEARCH OUTCOMES: Presented at the EDRA (Environmental Design Research Association) Conference in June of 2022 in Greenville, South Carolina.

An Assessment of Student Stress Levels and Information Rete INTRODUCTION The classroom is a place that many people know very well; on average, we spend over thirteen years in schooling, so it is important for students to build a positive connection with their classrooms. Khajavy et al. (2017) found in their study that a positive classroom environment can encourage students to communicate with their peers and teachers. Though studies have explored the design of classrooms, there has been a lack of understanding on how biophilic design could affect student behavior and performance in a classroom setting. Van der Berg et al. (2017); they found that students using classrooms with a green wall performed better on selective attention tests. This study attempts to understand how biophilic design in a classroom setting affects the stress levels and information retention capabilities of students.
METHODS
7
Two different classrooms (One traditional, and one biophilic) were created in SketchUp. Twenty-four participants were recruited using convenient sampling and then randomly assigned to one of the two environments - Environment A (traditional classroom without biophilic elements) and Environment B (redesigned classroom with biophilic elements). Participants used a virtual reality headset to explore the two spaces and complete a number of tasks. The resting heartrate was recorded prior to the VR experience and used as a baseline measurement. Heart rate measurements from each environment were normalized. After each environment, the participants would take a quiz then a survey. At the very end of the experiment, participants would answer open-ended questions in an interview. A content analysis and a paired t-test were used for qualitative and quantitative analysis, respectively.

Environment A
ntion Capabilities in Traditional versus Biophilic Classrooms Oates
Oklahoma State University
FINDINGS p-values for every tested category were less than 0.05 - categories include: comfortability, stress, normalized heart rates, happiness, awakeness, focus, classroom attractiveness, and crowded. Average earned grade in the traditional classroom: 56.3% Average earned grade in the biophilic classroom: 75.3% Participants were more vocal while in the biophilic classroom - they were able to be more creative and varied in their answers as compared to when they are in the traditional classroom.
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS Environment B
The findings suggest the need for more biophilic design in classrooms. In future studies, it is recommended that studies be carried out in physical settings over a longer period of time to study the benefits of biophilic design. As shown by findings in this study, biophilic design in classrooms would be beneficial to students in the classroom, as the biophilic elements would decrease stress, increase information retention, and promote the health and wellbeing of students. There is an opportunity for interior designers, architects, practitioners and researchers to learn which biophilic elements produce greater benefits in a virtual environment before implementing them in a physical setting such as a classroom.

AGE- IN PLAC E H O M E STUDIO 01 | RESIDENTI AL | Soph om ore Ye ar
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project was to design a home for two older adults according to a client narrative written by another group of students. The idea was to follow ADA rules to create a safe and comfortable environment for the two adults while still incorporating beautiful architectural features and finishes. CONCEPT: To create a wheelchair accessible space that feel s and looks like the smooth and elegant rhythm of classical music, while incorporating the intricate details of Parisian architecture and colors of vintage artwork. DURATION: 4 weeks | PARTNER PROJECT | SIZE: 3,650 sqft.
10
HEALTH: The paints and materials chosen for this product are low or zero VOC, promoting indoor air quality.
SAFETY: Tiles featured in this project have a slip-resistant coating to help prevent slipping and falling.
11
WELFARE: Plenty of space in walkways allows for a wheelchair user to feel comfortable and not isolated. The clients stated they felt happiest in France, so incorporating Parisian architetcural details may bring them happiness.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project was to design a retail space in an existing commercial area focusing on the creation of an aesthetically pleasing and functional design solution for older adults that is integrated into the overall environment of the neighborhood. CONCEPT: An inviting, all inclusive experience that provides comfort and feelings of security, while simultaneously experiencing the aromatic scents of nature and warmth.
DURATION: 4 weeks | PARTNER PROJECT | SIZE: 3,161 sqft.
14
HEALTH: The paints and materials chosen for this product are low or zero VOC, promoting indoor air quality. Antimicrobial surfaces in the retail and restroom areas ensures guests will not get sick from other users.
SAFETY: The LVT flooring chosen for this space has a DCOF rating of at least 0.42 when wet, promoting guests’ safety. Bookcases are affixed to the walls, ensuring they will not injure a guest.
WELFARE: ADA access ensures that guests with disabilities will not feel isolated, and will be able to enjoy the space just as anyone else might.
