During

the rehearsal period for ISU Theatre’s production of 9 to 5, I was listening to the outstanding podcast Dolly Parton’s America produced through WYNC Studios as part of New York Public Radio. The podcast takes its time in articulating how Dolly’s journey—down from the Smoky Mountains of rural Tennessee into the limelight of Nashville—is a mythic one, and is etched into her music. A mythic journey that is evocative for so many peoples across the world—in Lebanon, in India, in Japan, in Iowa. (Okay we don’t have mountains to come down off of, but…) Dolly was not the first to make this journey, but she immortalized the big movements of it in the “sad-ass mountain songs” she crafted to commemorate her travel. And it ultimately posits this particularly apt thesis about why Dolly Parton’s music is so curious powerful to so many people—her fan base cuts across just about every demographic you could imagine. The podcast’s host Jay Abumrad suggests that Dolly’s songs, in essence, are “music for displaced peoples, the music of movement and longing for the place you left.” When our production had its last rehearsal on March 13, 2020, our displaced production waited patiently, longing for the moment that it was safe for us and our audience to be able to return home to Fisher Theater and sing Dolly’s songs again…with you.

4

Our opening night was moved from April 3 to April 22 and then to October 2—moving from our 20192020 “HERoic Season” to our 2020-2021 “Season of Invitation”—before ultimately being cancelled this summer on the heels of announcements that Broadway shows will be shuttered until at least 2021, and advice from groups like the National Association for Teachers of Signing urging choirs and musical groups “not to gather again to sing in person until a vaccine or treatment for COVID-19 becomes widely available, even if that takes years.” It is becoming clearer and clearer that this is a profoundly difficult moment that will change how we create theatre in the near and far future. And so, our production-in-progress was left necessarily incomplete. There was work done and there was work yet to do. But when the show can’t go on, the show can go on-line.

This imagined performance was inspired by a similar archival project for a cancelled performance of Diana Burbano’s Policarpa at Franklin & Marshall College. Imagined Performance: 9 to 5 is serving as a “shelter” for our collective memory of this unprecedented process of making and unmaking 9 to 5. Our company has collected any analog and digital remnants related to the production created prior to, or in response, to the interruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. This site is a testament to the labor and love that our production team, our designers and assistants, our performers, our musicians—our one and only company—put into this production of 9 to 5. This is our Imagined Performance, for you, our very real audience.
