05 DUAL PUBLICNESS
Acadamic work of bringing publicness through cultural and art center Critic: Li Bao; Individual work; Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China The lack of public space is not an unusal problem in Chinese cities, while public buildings carries most responsibillity to improve the situation. The site of the project is a typical case of this situation. The broadened fast road on the north and narrow alleys on the community side largely limit the area where social activities could happen. In the design, I created two layers of publicness, considering the actural operation of the theater. One is autonomous publicness while the other is urban publicness, each focuses on the interior/ exterior space, and activities as an audience/ an normal visiter. Both of them benefits from the view of the river. With the dual publicness, the cultural and art center can serve a large area as a active factor in the city.
