How Winter Can Isolate Older Adults Winters are considered a tough season for many, but they can be especially rough on older adults. Cold temperatures, ice, snow and storms make getting around more challenging. With their immune system already decreased, some of their diseases may get worse with the cold. Because of many of these reasons, do winters can make them feel isolated and depressed. Here are a few ways the winter season can affect older adults’ life and make them feel isolated. ďƒ˜ Mobility issues – In the winter, diseases like arthritis get worse. Joint pain flares up, making every day activities more painful. With snow and ice, walking outside becomes much more dangerous as the risk of falls increases. Plus, due to the additional pain and hazards, they may not be able to go out of the house for daily walks or to meet loved ones, which can cause loneliness.

 Inability to drive – Many seniors struggle with driving in the winter. Wintry weather and snow, combined with their slower reflexes, can make driving unsafe for older adults. This lack of transportation can isolate them further, cutting their connection from the rest of the world, especially if they live in a rural area.

 Cold weather – Cold weather is another trouble for older adults in winters. They are advised to not to go out when it’s too cold, as it can affect their health adversely. With weakened immune systems, they are at a higher risk of pneumonia and hypothermia. Diseases like arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes may also make it difficult for seniors to stay warm. The inability to go outside can result in loneliness and isolation for many seniors.
