CANMAIL
WINTER 2020
NEWS FROM
WELCOME TO CANMAIL Well, what a year it’s been! 2020 was filled with challenges, but in this issue of CanMail we’re fortunate enough to be reporting back on some fantastic highlights and achievements too.
‘Business as usual’ may not be an option right now, but there remain plenty of opportunities to bring recycling into the conversation and engage people with our key messages.
We marked our return to experiential activities in August with the unveiling of the impressive #EveryCanCounts Rainbow, a tribute to key workers created from over 2,500 used drink cans. This ‘real-world’ campaign was followed by innovation in the digital sphere in September with the launch of our first-ever augmented reality filter game.
After reading this issue, I hope you’ll agree that we’ve been making the most of these opportunities in 2020. We’re now looking forward to building on these successes in the year to come – whatever that may bring!
While there is still a great deal of uncertainty about the year ahead, 2020 has shown us that a little creativity goes a long way in a disrupted world. CHRIS LATHAM-WARDE EVERY CAN COUNTS UK PROGRAMME MANAGER
SIPFUL DRINKS JOINS TEAM ECC! THE RAINBOW EFFECT! Arching skywards above the iconic Brighton beachfront during a brief but welcome lockdown reprieve was our #EveryCanCounts Rainbow art installation. Created from over 2,500 used drink cans, our rainbow stood as a tribute to key workers for their heroic efforts throughout the pandemic, and a reminder that we can all do infinite good in our own lives by simply recycling our empty drink cans.
“IT’S WONDERFUL TO SEE THE EVERY CAN COUNTS INITIATIVE IN BRIGHTON HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING VALUABLE ALUMINIUM DRINK CANS. THE GIANT RAINBOW OF RECYCLED CANS WILL SERVE BOTH AS A GREAT EYECATCHING SCULPTURE FOR THE CAMPAIGN AND AS A CELEBRATION OF THE SERVICE OF KEY WORKERS DURING THIS PANDEMIC.” CAROLINE LUCAS, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR BRIGHTON PAVILION
While there is still a great deal of uncertainty about the year ahead, 2020 has shown us that a little creativity goes a long way in a disrupted world.

‘CATCH ‘EM IF YOU CAN’ OUR FIRST AR FILTER GAME! We marked Recycle Week 2020 by launching our first augmented reality game filter for Instagram and Facebook. Targeting the online gaming community, we set out to educate gamers on the importance of recycling drink cans.
The game challenges players to collect as many falling drink cans in an on-screen recycling bin as possible, and here’s the fun part – you have to move your head to guide the recycling bin into position! When the time’s up, players find out how many cans they’ve collected and what aluminium item could be produced with the size of their haul. A laptop? A bicycle? A sports car? With aluminium, the possibilities are endless!

ECC RESEARCH FINDS ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN INCREASING IN THE COVID-19 ERA This summer we polled 1,500 people in the UK and investigated how the impacts of COVID-19 had influenced their recycling attitudes and behaviours. We found that 90% of people in the UK say that since the COVID-19 outbreak, it is more important than ever to take care of our planet and the environment. Furthermore, 73% of Brits stated that during the pandemic they have recycled more than ever, suggesting that the increase in time spent at home has made it easier for people to do their bit.
60% 54% AND
STATED THAT THEIR DECISION TO BUY A PRODUCT IS INFLUENCED BY HOW RECYCLABLE ITS PACKAGING IS.
SAID THEY PREFER TO USE DRINK CANS BECAUSE THEY ARE EASILY RECYCLABLE.
In contrast, less than half of respondents said they often or always recycle when at work (43%) or when out and about (41%). Click here to look at the findings in more detail on our website.
SUBFERO WINS GREEN CAN AWARD
Bristol-based customer support specialists Subfero have been awarded a Green Can Award for their fantastic efforts to increase recycling in the workplace. Subfero have installed Every Can Counts collection boxes and posters around their office and have appointed two recycling champions to encourage colleagues to do their bit. The team’s award entry really stood out as they had organised a fun-filled recycling awareness day entitled ‘It’s Easy Being Green Day’. Activities included a green-themed dresscode, shooting hoops with empty drink cans, a can-related pun competition and even a rendition of the can-can! Well done Subfero! We hope your creative ideas inspire others to have some fun with can recycling in the workplace!
