START LOSING WEIGHT If you're overweight, losing weight will bring you a range of important health benefits. The key to success? Think small, realistic changes to your diet and level of physical activity that can become a part of your daily routine.

COMMIT TO CHANGE Evidence shows that the best way to lose weight is to make long-term changes to diet and physical activity that result in a steady rate of weight loss. Aim to lose weight at around 0.5kg to 1kg a week (1lb to 2lb), until you achieve a healthy BMI. Modern life can make it easy to eat too much and do little physical activity. The result is often weight gain. To lose weight, we need to change our current habits. This means eating a healthy, balanced diet and getting active. Drastic exercise regimes and fad diets that result in rapid weight loss are unlikely to work for long, because these kinds of lifestyle changes can’t be maintained. Once you stop the regime, you’re likely to return to old habits and regain weight. Instead, choose diet and physical activity changes that you can make a part of your daily routine, and stick to for life.

READY TO GET STARTED? DO TODAY You can take four actions today that will start your journey towards a healthy weight: ● Check your BMI. 1. Work out your height in metres and multiply the figure by itself.

2. Measure your weight in kilograms 3. Divide the weight by the height squared (ie. the answer to Q1). For example, you might be 1.6m (5ft 3in) tall and weigh 65kg (10st 3lb). The calculation would then be: 1.6 x 1.6 = 2.56. BMI would be 65 divided by 2.56 = 25.39. A healthy BMI ranges between 18.8 and 24.9 30 or greater is considered obese and 18.5 or less is considered underweight ● If your BMI is in the overweight range, aim to achieve a weight that puts your BMI in the healthy range. If it is in the obese range, aim to lose between 5% and 10% of your starting weight. ● Now take the next snack you plan to have and swap it for something healthier. Many common snacks, such as sweets, chocolate, biscuits and crisps, are high in fat and sugar and supply calories that we don’t need. Today, swap your elevenses or mid-afternoon snack for a piece of fruit. Aim to do the same every day: you’ve adopted your first weight loss habit. ● Next, find a way to fit just one extra walk into your day. Brisk walking is a way to burn calories, and you can often fit it into your daily routine. You might walk to the shops during your lunch break, or get off the bus one stop early on the way home and walk the rest of the way. Commit to this and you’ve adopted your second long-term habit. Ideally, you should aim to walk 10,000 steps a day: it’s not as many as it sounds. ~ 10 ~

● Last, think about your breakfast tomorrow morning. Can you make it healthier, using the foods you already have at home? DO THIS WEEK There are four actions you can take this week: ● First, plan a healthy weekly shop. Healthy, balanced meals are key to a healthy weight, and eating well often starts with having the right foods at home. At the supermarket look out for fresh foods and healthier options. ● Everyone likes a treat occasionally, like a pizza or a takeaway. So this week, swap your treat for a healthier, home-made alternative as you can make lower-calorie versions of many takeaway foods at home. If you do order in, choose healthier options. ● Next, commit to one more way to increase your level of physical activity. It’s recommended that adults get a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week, and you may need more to lose weight. Physical activity means anything that raises your heart rate and makes you warm. You can split the 30 minutes up, for example, into three sections of 10 minutes. ● Last, identify this week’s danger zones. These are times when you might find yourself eating lots of unhealthy foods, perhaps because you are eating out or simply because you’re tired or stressed. Plan ahead, so that you can limit those foods. But don’t be too strict: an indulgence from time to time is fine. Info taken from

Yoga Therapy is the adaptation of yoga for people with health problems. Although ordinary yoga classes can improve general health and resolve mild complaints, they may be ineffective - or even harmful - for serious conditions. Other alternative therapies include: Alexander Technique, Dowsing, Flower Therapy, Healing, Herbalism, Homeopathy, Iridology, Kinesiology, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Radionics, TCM and Thought Field Therapy.

It is important to remember, however, that your New Year goals must be your own. You can only do what you are capable of and only you really know what you’d like to achieve.

We all know smoking is bad for our health and wellbeing. Science has proven that smoking is linked to many serious and fatal diseases including lung cancer, heart disease, bronchitis and emphysema. And yet so many of us find it difficult to stop. Looking for some inspiration to help you start stopping? Maybe we can help. THE FACTS First of all, there are the facts: cigarettes contain over 4,000 toxic chemicals and around 50 of these cause cancer. Scary, huh? Some chemicals found in cigarettes include acetone (nail polish remover), methanol, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde – none of which do your body any good! THE BENEFITS And what of the benefits? Stopping smoking will reduce your risk of a whole host of illnesses, from cancer to gangrene, and improve your fertility levels. As soon as you

stop smoking, your body will start to recover. After just 24 hours, carbon monoxide will be eliminated from your body. Quit for 10 years and your risk of lung cancer will fall to half that of a smoker and your risk of heart attack will fall to the same level as someone who has never smoked. If you’ve got kids, it’ll reduce the chances of them suffering from asthma or glue ear. Plus, your every day life will improve too – you’ll be able to taste food more, breathing will be easier, you won’t smell of cigarettes and your teeth won’t be brown. There are plenty more, but we’ve only got room to list a few. Don’t get us wrong, quitting smoking is not easy. But with the right amount of will power and help from other areas, you can do it!

There are lots of ways to improve your fitness without having to join a gym. Joining a local sports team is a great way to spend your spare time and keep fit. You also get to meet lots of new people.

A good idea is to try out a whole range of physical activities to see which ones you enjoy the most.

By keeping physically active, you’re making sure that your joints and body organs are kept in good working order. Exercise can also help maintain your weight at a healthy level and can protect you against catching coughs and colds on a regular basis. You’ll also feel an increase in your energy level and brain activity. Knowing that you’re looking and feeling good can also give your self-confidence a real boost. HOW MUCH EXERCISE DO YOU NEED? If you’re under 18, you should try to do a total of 60 minutes of physical activity every day. You don’t have to do it all in one go, but in chunks of at least 10-15 minutes throughout the day. This includes everything from pumping iron in the gym to walking up stairs instead of taking the lift. The key thing is that the activity should increase your heart rate

If you’re over 18, aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week.

Once you’ve decided the sorts of exercise you enjoy, you can plan what type of exercise you’re going to do and when. BEFORE YOU START If you’ve decided to start an exercise routine, it’s important to go and see your doctor for an examination. Your doctor will be able to let you know how much exercise you should be doing to begin with. They’ll also let you know if you have any medical conditions like back pain that can limit the type of exercise you do. FITNESS FOR FREE Getting fit isn’t all about gyms. Some forms of exercise won’t cost you a penny and most types can easily be slotted into a busy lifestyle. ~ 20 ~

Think about: cycling or walking to school, college or work instead of driving or taking the bus, running around the block a few times a week can improve your fitness level and you’ll soon find yourself running quicker and further checking out the leisure facilities provided by your local authority; many have basketball hoops, tennis courts and football pitches that you can use free of charge TEAM SPORTS Getting fit isn’t just something you have to do by yourself. Playing team sports like football, hockey or netball is great exercise, but is often more enjoyable because you’re with a group of friends. Your school, college or university may run sessions in the evening, or you might want to get involved with a local team. You can find details of local clubs on the internet, in the phone book or at your nearest leisure centre. Your local authority can also give you information of sporting activities in your area.
