meet the

Washington-greene Chapter

This 45-member alumni association chapter in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania, led by Wendy Edgar, is making a big impact on the fight against pediatric cancer. The Washington-Green Chapter’s trademark THON fundraiser, We, Too, Can Dance Charity Social Benefitting THON, raised over $3,000 for THON 2013. We, Too, Can Dance is a ticketed, beginner-friendly dance class and social event where participants get to learn a wide array of ballroom dances. A silent auction, raffle and homemade desserts also help raise funds. Following the 3rd annual event, Edgar is proud of what the event has become. “Initially, because our chapter is so small,” said Edgar, “we did not think that we could put together a successful THON fundraiser.” But, thanks to the dedication of several members, the generosity of local businesses, and promotional assistance from surrounding chapters, “it was not as labor intensive as we thought!” According to Edgar, We, Too, Can Dance has been a wonderful experience for her chapter. In addition to raising funds for a great cause, the event also brought members closer together. “THON is such a big part of Penn State. It is such a great thing.” As we try to move on from a difficult time in Penn State’s history, Edgar said, “THON is something all Penn Staters can identify with and be proud of.” Thanks to the Washington-Green Chapter for all your hard work in continuing the fight against pediatric cancer as alumni! Together, as one Penn State community, we will make a difference in the life of a child.

Penn State HerSHey CHildren’S HoSPital & tHe Four diamondS Fund:

Conquering PediaTriC CanCer

THON’s sole beneficiary, the Four Diamonds Fund, not only provides outstanding care and comprehensive support to children undergoing treatment, but also enables funded scientists to conduct innovative cancer research. Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital continues to be recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best hospitals in the nation for pediatric cancer care and research. Today, with the support of THON, Four Diamonds research team is working to improve the survival rates of some of the most aggressive forms of pediatric cancer. One program focuses on Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a pediatric brain tumor that manifests in the brainstem, an area difficult to treat with traditional care. The new molecular-based

treatment in this clinical trial would result in more targeted strategies for this delicate area of the brain. Four Diamonds support allows Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital to be a member of both the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutics Investigators Consortium (POETIC). Membership in these elite research programs allows cutting-edge clinical trial phases to be offered as treatment options for patients whose diseases are not responding to conventional therapies. Four Diamonds continues to redefine boundaries and impact cancer research on a national scale. While Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital is located in Pennsylvania, the work of THON and Four Diamonds provides hope that any child, anywhere will be able to overcome pediatric cancer. This year, with your support, we can make even greater strides toward creating a better tomorrow For The Kids.
