Black History Month The month of February is Black History Month, this is a time to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and recognize the role of Blacks in American History.

Why is this month so important?

Blacks have been systematically oppressed for centuries in America and throughout the world. Family dynamics have been broken, our ancestors were literally beaten to ground only to rise again. What other race can you say is as strong as blacks? It is a month to recognize the brilliance of the African-American race. With the strong will of the African-American people, conquering feats such as coming out of slavery, earning the right to vote and fighting for civil rights have created solid foundations to build an ongoing legacy for the future. Look at far how we have come? Our first black president! The same house that our slave ancestors built and a black man resided in as the President. Like our ancestors, we must have faith even in the hardest times. The tension in American right now between different races is at an all-time high. Instead of fighting each other we need to come together united as one. The people who fought for our rights we have today would want us to be one not divided.

Tee - Ahna Gilmore Community Service Chair '16-'17 After leaving Buffalo State Tee-Ahna has established her self in education and is thriving. While teaching she also attends graduate school in order to obtain her Masters of Art in Education. Read her story below.

My name is Tee-Ahna Gilmore and I am P.U.L.S.E's former Community Service Chair for the 2016-2017 school year. After graduating in May 2017 with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and English and a minor in Urban Civic Education I went on to pursue my dream of becoming an educator in a urban city school district. During my junior year at Buffalo State I applied for this prestigious internship program through Uncommon Schools titled Summer Teaching Fellowship. After my completion of the program that summer, I was offered a full time teaching position to work for Uncommon Schools in Newark: Vailsburg Northstar Academy. I was also given the opportunity by Uncommon to attend for free Relay Graduate School of Education for my masters. I couldn't believe that I was chosen among several other candidates to be a 4th grade teacher for Northstar. I was beyond astonished that as a junior in college I had my career and graduate school lined up proceeding graduation. While a senior, I finished my courses including student teaching, my state teaching assessments and even recruited a few juniors to the STF program. In addition, I was apartment hunting for my big move to New Jersey where I would start teaching that August. The transition was hard, but with the help of my family, friends and preparation of Buffalo State I was able to make it happen! Currently, I am an independent 1st year graduate student and educator of young minorities similar to myself. Being a first year teacher AND graduate student has taught me a lot about myself and what I am capable of accomplishing. (Continued Next Page)

Teaching has opened my eyes to realizing that changing the futures of young leaders is rewarding, but challenging. It takes dedication, passion and a lot of patience. I feel my after college success was nothing short of a blessing. Buffalo State was the turning point to my success and I am continuing to sharpen my craft in education everyday and work to become a better version of myself in all aspects.

No Valentine? Don't have a special someone for Valentine's Day? It's okay neither do I, and a whole bunch of other people. Make a Valentine's Day a "you" day. Take yourself to the movies, buy something new at Sephora, buy that item you've had your eye on.Anything that will make you feel good about yourself. Or make it a girls day! You and your girlfriends can go get manicures and pedicures, massages, and then dinner and a movie. It's called Galentine's Day and it's a real thing. The television show Parks and Recreation created a day in the show that mimicks Valentines Day but if women to appreciate other women. February 13th is Galetine's Day. So on February 13th grab a friend and celebrate each other!
