NDT Apprenticeship Pathways

Shaping Tomorrow’s Workforce

Alfie Foxton-Smith, ANDT Specialist SME and Richie Lobb, Asset Integrity Contract Delivery Manager recently visited Middlesbrough College to speak with NVQ Level 3 Welding Engineering apprentices about our role in the industry.

Richie provided an overview of Altrad and the range of services we offer, while Alfie delivered an insightful presentation on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), followed by a Q&A session with the students.

Our team took part in the Engineering and Construction Awareness Day at NesCol, held in partnership with ECITB and DYW. The event brought together around 130 pupils from schools across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire who were potentially interested in careers within the industry.

Representing Altrad were Danny McVey (Engineering Manager), Scott Urquhart (Integrity Base Technician) and Emma Fergusson (HR Manager – L&D). They showcased the wide range of roles available within Altrad and discussed the pathways young people can take to enter the industry.

The pupils were highly engaged throughout the day.

The session lasted a couple of hours and was very well received by both the college and the students, who found it invaluable in gaining a clearer understanding of the engineering world beyond the classroom.

SafeZone+ Sets a New Standard

Apprentice to Award-Winning Rising Star

Since mid September, our scaffolding team have achieved an impressive 89% completion rate for SafeZone+ training.

That’s 347 team members fully trained. The remaining 11% are scheduled for completion by the 12th of December, with final sessions planned for January 2026.

Cameron Fraser began his career as an apprentice insulator at the St. Fergus Gas Terminal, and from day one, he stood out for his exceptional motivation, professionalism, and eagerness to learn.

In 2024, these qualities led to him being nominated for the TICA Level 2 Apprentice of the Year, where he achieved an impressive second place nationally.

SafeZone+ is a vital part of our transformation process, where we committed to reviewing and aligning working practices to the highest standards to ensure we are all Safer Together. The training goes beyond industry guidance.

While NASC SG4:22 sets the benchmark for scaffolding safety, Altrad implements additional measures to ensure full compliance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Originally introduced in 2017, SafeZone+ was created to simplify rules and enhance safety following incidents within the scaffolding industry. It has been continually updated and improved, and today it represents the minimum standard for all Altrad scaffolders.

In October 2025, Cameron was named winner of the TICA Level 3 Award. And just weeks later, Cameron also won the Rising Star accolade at the Annual Safer Together Awards.

Winning two major awards in 2025 is no coincidence; it is the direct result of Cameron’s relentless hard work, determination and commitment to excellence.

A Win for Our People at the OEUK Awards

Altrad Secures Sellafield Framework

We’re proud to share that Altrad’s UK Offshore Sector was named winner of the OEUK People & Culture Award.

Altrad will join forces with supply chain partners across three key areas of a new Sellafield Ltd framework, which in total is worth up to £4.6bn.

On the 20th of November, industry peers gathered at Aberdeen’s P&J Live for the 2025 OEUK Awards, a prestigious event that celebrates the innovation, dedication, and excellence driving our sector forward.

The Decommissioning & Nuclear Waste Partnership (DNWP) framework will support high hazard risk reduction programmes on the Sellafield site.

Why did we win?

Altrad will work on Lots 1 (Remediation), 3 (Retrievals) and 4 (Nuclear Waste), of the framework agreement, which will be in place for an initial nine years with an option for a further 6 years, through to 2040.

We’ve built a workplace where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic self to work. This isn’t just a statement, it’s a commitment that shapes everything we do.

Safety First: Forties Bravo Celebrates a Major Milestone Stephen Keith, Forties Bravo Focal Point, proudly announced the platform’s remarkable achievement of over 1,200 days without a Lost Time Incident (LTI).

Operating on an extremely busy platform, the Forties Bravo core team handles scaffolding, deck operations, and helicopter duties daily.

This milestone reflects the team’s unwavering commitment to safety and demonstrates how a proactive, safety-first mindset can create a culture where every individual feels responsible for protecting themselves and their colleagues, ultimately driving operational excellence.

RECOGNITION 2025 Safer Together Awards On Thursday, 30th October, teammates, clients and industry peers from across the UK gathered to celebrate what makes our company unique, our transformative, collaborative, and people-focused culture.

INCLUSION From Service to Safety: Steve Mann’s Journey Tell us about your time in the forces?

I joined the Royal Air Force in 2003 as a trainee HGV mechanic, completing my training two years later before being posted to RAF Kinloss.

During my 9 years at Kinloss, I completed two detachments to the Falklands and several others across the UK. In 2007, I undertook assimilation training, qualifying to work on airfield ground equipment. I was promoted to Corporal in 2009.

The Power of Networks: Year-End Wrap After more than a year of progress, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible success of our Employee Network Groups, their engaging sessions, the positive impact they’ve made across the business and their outstanding achievement in winning at the Annual Safer Together Awards.

After a posting to RAF Leuchars in 2012, I moved to RAF Lossiemouth. There, I was promoted to Sergeant.

I also deployed to Afghanistan, probably one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career.

In 2018, I returned to Leuchars, where I served until 2025, including a four-month detachment to Cyprus.

These accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without the passion, commitment, and support of every one of you. Together, we’ve built something truly meaningful, and this is just the beginning.

How did you feel as you started planning your departure and considering roles outwith the forces?

I felt ready for a new challenge, but was aware it would be a major change. After 22 years in a structured and teamfocused environment, the transition to civilian life required careful thought.

What attracted you to Altrad?

During my resettlement period, I had the opportunity to complete a work placement with the HSEQ department, which I discovered through the Career Transition Partnership. I was already familiar with the company from attending previous employment fairs, so when the placement came up, I was eager to take part and see firsthand how the company operated and to explore whether a career in Health and Safety was the right direction for me after leaving the forces.

What are the highlights of your time with Altrad so far?

I’m really happy with how well the move from the military into the industry has gone. The role has given me a better understanding of health and safety, and the chance to build on my NEBOSH training with proper hands-on experience.

What would you say to encourage more forces personnel to be taken on in teams across the business?

After 22 years in the Royal Air Force, I found that the skills and experience I gained are highly valued here. From my work placement, it was clear that my previous background could make a real contribution.

International Men’s Day: Celebrating Men Who Make a Difference International Men’s Day took place on the 19th of November and celebrated the positive impact men and boys have on society, communities, families and workplaces, while also emphasising the importance of their health and wellbeing.

The theme for 2025 was “Celebrating Men and Boys” and invited people around the world to celebrate the everyday achievements of men and boys in all walks of life.

A message from your Men’s Health Network Hosts To ensure we celebrate men, we need to continue encouraging open conversations and reducing stigma around vulnerability to continue creating a supportive environment.

There are various support groups dedicated to providing help and resources for men’s mental health such as Men in Mind and Men United.

For anyone leaving the forces, this company is a great place to apply your skills, take on new challenges, and continue developing professionally in a supportive environment.

Breaking Limits: Beryl Bravo’s Desert Trek

Harbour Contract Pays Tribute to Veterans

Next March, Dave Easton, Deck Team Leader on Beryl Bravo, and Ross Kinnear will take on an incredible challenge, trekking across the Sahara Desert.

Earlier this year, our Aberdeen based Harbour Energy contract delivery team partnered with our client to fund a bespoke remembrance bench for the local community.

Located at the T-junction of Pitmedden Road and Victoria Street in Dyce, it offers a lasting tribute and a place for reflection in a busy pedestrian area.

What makes this even more inspiring? They’re self-funding the entire trip to raise money for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity dedicated to providing long-term support for bereaved military children.

Mark McGrotty, Contract Delivery Manager, shared “This is a really inspiring effort for such a good cause, in what feels like an increasingly polarised society it is encouraging to see some humanity.”

Working with Harbour Energy, Dyce in Bloom and Aberdeen City Council, we made this project possible. On the 11th of November, we gathered with the community for a service led by Oil & Gas Chaplain, Reverend Michael Mair, closing with a piper playing The Unknown Warrior.
