By inhibiting ovulation and making the mucus of the cervix hostile to sperm, Progestogens are able to prevent conception. There are basically 2 types of progestogens; Analogues of progesterone; and Analogues of testosterone. While these treatments show results right away, they do come with several side effects. Some of them will include1.Because progestogen inhibits either progesterone or testosterone causing hormone imbalances between estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, one of the side effects can be a reduced sexual libido in women. While women dont think much of it, their men definitely do. There is an entire industry dedicated to increasing libidos for both men and women, so as long as you keep this in mind while treating PMS with proestogens you will be fine. 2.Progestogens will also inhibit potassium levels in the body, causing an imbalance between potassium and salt. This will interfere with lymphatic function and can cause water retention and weigh gain. It would be far better to supplement the diet with protein, and the B vitamins to reduce the effects of stress on the body, and thereby restoring these balances naturally than it is to treat them with hormones. The side effects of using hormone therapy can be long lasting and may not be reversible. 3.Research has found that women who use progestogens as a treatment for PMS often experience an irregular menstrual cycle that can include prolonged and excessive bleeding, no cycle for months at a time, and even very painful periods. 4.The hormone imbalance caused by higher levels of progesterone in the body will inference with the normal function of nervous system in hormone secretion resulting in over production of serotonin and adrenaline leading to depression and anxiety. 5.Insomnia is another side effect of taking progestogens. Because it inhibits the levels of progesterone and testosterone in the body, this can result in nervous tension and a disruption of the normal production of the hormone melatonin. Taking hormone therapy is a very risky business. Newer research is showing how hormone therapy is also contributing to heart disease and breast cancer in women ages 30 to 50, as well as a host of other complications, making hormone therapy become a thing of the past. There are far more other, more natural ways to treat PMS that wont throw your body into a fit month after month. Natural Healing, the use of vitamins and minerals to replace lost nutrition during this time of the month is a proven, effective treatment for the signs and symptoms of PMS in women of all ages, around the world
