Some researchers believe that many of a woman's premenstrual symptoms may be related to lack of adequate vitamins and minerals in the diet. Most good daily multi-vitamins contain all that is necessary to insure that you get the right amounts every day; however, research is now showing that the daily RDA is in fact well below what is actually needed to maintain good health, particularly during menstruation. For instance, Selenium is not included in all daily multi-vitamins because it is not part of the RDA, but it has several health benefits relating to PMS that women could benefit from. Certain vitamins and minerals allow other vitamins and minerals to be absorbed by the body more efficiently. For instance, calcium is always good, but without magnesium, calcium will pass right though the bones and deposit somewhere else in the body. Calcium without vitamin D will allow calcium to be lost in the urine 10 times faster than it will if vitamin D is found in the diet. Because so few people eat their nutrition from natural food, there are several nutrients that have not even been identified yet, that we are missing out on. Without these nutrients, our body may not process the nutrients we do eat, causing us to lose much of what we actually eat. Another example is vitamin E. When we take a vitamin E supplement, we are only getting alphatocopherol. There are 8 tocopherols altogether found in their natural food source, and we are missing out on all the others when we opt to take vitamin E in supplement form only, instead of by eating foods rich in vitamin E. If alpha-tocoherol is taken independently, it can be toxic in greater amounts, but when eaten in its natural form, there has never been a single incident of toxicity. It is for this reason, and many more that it is always better to get your nutritional supplements from their natural food sources. However, if you are suffering, and need help with particularly PMS, then by all means go ahead and start taking supplements in the form of a good multivitamin. Don’t be so concerned about toxicity, as you will need to take huge amounts to reach that toxicity level, and reports of this are few and far between.
