crowdfund to START A FARM! $1100

KITCHEN GARDENS & ECO-STOVES Your gift helps families grow their own food and cook in a safer, environmentally friendly way with a wood-conserving stove.

Every day, a twice-widowed mother named Josefa (inset pic), pieces together a mere living for her family. In the year since she partnered with Sustainable Harvest International, Josefa’s life has improved. Her new wood-conserving stove uses less than half the firewood of her old one, and a new organic kitchen garden is thriving. The garden and stove provide opportunities for her to teach the next generation how to grow food and care for the planet. PHOTOS: SUSTAINABLE HARVEST INTL

FAMILIES

Homelessness is devastating, particularly for children who suffer the emotional impact of the absence of a stable home. Currently, nearly 12 million children in the US suffer from food insecurity.* Unforeseen situations, such as job loss and illness can unleash a catastrophic cycle of events which can cause financial hardship. A gift to Alternative Gift International’s Shelter & Food for Struggling Families program will help stock food pantries and give hygiene and bedding supplies to homeless shelters. By providing these basic things, you’re helping people through some of the most difficult times.

Farming families in Haiti have been severely impacted by deforestation, erosion, mudslides and lack of potable water. As a result, Haiti’s rural poor live in a perpetual struggle to find sustainable and affordable food sources. The Quixote Center’s Seed Bank program provides seeds to local communities at an affordable cost. Last year, the Seed Bank helped over 200 families in two communities. Your gift paves the way for students to become nurses and care for their communities.

Across Vietnam, hospitals and clinics are overburdened with patients. Nurses are in high demand because they provide care for the most prevalent conditions and promote preventative care. However, financial hardships are stumbling blocks for those in ethnic minority communities, where opportunities for work and education are lacking. Many desire to become nurses, but tuition and books are unaffordable. One student, Thi Huong Giang Lê, was at risk for not being able to finish school due to her family’s inability to pay, but through ConnectMed’s Nursing Program, she was able to graduate and become a nurse. LESSONS SAVE LIVES

“It eases my loss when I see my son Lukey learning to swim” - Karen, born and raised in the YukonKuskokwim (YK) Delta region, experienced the loss of two family members to drowning. (see more about Karen on our website)

Water. It’s essential to life and essential to the livelihood of the Yup’ik people living in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Western Alaska. The traditional Yup’ik subsistence lifestyle depends heavily on hunting and fishing around lakes, rivers and streams, but this proximity to water can be deadly. Drownings have historically been a heartbreakingly common occurrence. For years, a group of local mothers, the YK Delta Lifesavers, fundraised and advocated for a community swimming pool to address this issue. This dream was achieved. Currently the Lifesavers, housed at Bethel Community Services Foundation, help prevent drownings by making swimming lessons accessible to all community members.

THE DONKEY MOBILE LIBRARY Through your gift, Ethiopian children will be able to embrace the joy of reading and feel the power of independent learning.

Remember the first time you opened a book? Ethiopian children haven’t had the joy of experiencing that. They face challenges in achieving real literacy because while school enrollment rates have increased, an estimated 45 percent of people over the age of 15 still cannot read. This is mostly due to the fact that there are virtually no books available to read in local languages. The Ethiopia Reads' Donkey Mobile Library programs deliver local language books to remote villages and schools so primary-age children have regular access to reading material. With accessibility to local language books, children will experience a new level of learning.

EDUCATE A CHILD; CREATE HOPE FOR

education

OUR WORLD

With an improved learning experience, children can reach new heights, both academically and professionally.

A primary cause of generational poverty is the lack of access to quality education. Without a quality learning experience, children aren’t able to pursue their dreams. Recite and repeat teaching methods, which are common in developing countries, do not give students critical thinking skills needed in today’s world. Teach for Life, a program of Trees for Life, has developed simple video lessons which can be adapted to local languages. These videos are used to train teachers and parents, thus paving the way for the future.

GENDER EQUALITY

A DIGNIFIED TRADE FOR

DALITS

With an opportunity to learn a dignified trade, Dalit women can rise out of poverty and be the proud owner of a home-based business. PHOTO: INDIA PARTNERS

The Dalits (aka Untouchables) are oppressed in every corner of society. Their social caste severely limits them to menial work, such as cleaning latrines and sewers. Dalit women in rural villages now have the opportunity to stabilize their future and learn the valuable skill of sewing through India Partners’ Tailoring program.

After the completion of the program, graduates receive a sewing machine and can make twice what they would otherwise earn doing hard labor jobs. Moreover, a home-based sewing business enables a mother to care for her children while working, and she may save a little money for her children’s future.

End generational poverty and stabilize the future for women-led Haitian families.

In Haiti’s rural villages, 24 percent of the population lives in abject poverty. Many are women who are survivors of violence. Conditions are exacerbated by poor infrastructure and long distances from services such as healthcare and education, which greatly affect the young and old. Beyond Borders is empowering women-led families to escape poverty through this 18month program. Your gift can significantly reduce maternal and newborn deaths.

CARE FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS

Guatemala has the highest rate of maternal and infant mortality in Central America. Indigenous Mayan women, who suffer from the highest levels of poverty and poorest birth outcomes, account for nearly 75 percent of maternal deaths and a lack of resources means low birthweight newborns often don’t receive the special care required to keep them alive. Project Concern International’s Casa Materna trains volunteer midwives and educates parents to use breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact to regulate body temperature and increase bonding. PCI has supported over 100,000 Mayan women during their pregnancies, increasing the survival rates of mothers and low birthweight and premature newborns in these remote areas.

More than 700,000 people have fled for their lives and the health crisis is staggering: 1 in 7 newborns will not survive; 7 out of 1,000 mothers perish from childbirth; and 1 in 10 people suffer from malaria. Burma Humanitarian Mission trains, equips and deploys BackPack Medics to travel among refugee camps, providing live-saving care. This year, with your help, the medics will treat over 25,000 patients and deliver more than 1,000 babies. With limited financial resources and poor care in hospitals, 74 percent of women in La Plaine, Haiti delivered at home assisted by untrained midwives. The midwives aren’t educated to prescreen for high-risk deliveries and emergencies, nor do they carry sterile supplies and tools needed for safe deliveries. This results in high rates of infant and maternal mortality. In the most recent statistics from Haiti, 1 in 80 mothers die during delivery, and there are 59 deaths for every 1,000 live infant births. Unfortunately, elephants that are now unemployed by the timber industry are lacking basic care. SEATURTLES

Your gift can protect turtle nests and establish protected areas.

Hawksbill turtles swim across thousands of miles of ocean during their lifetimes. Little is known about where they go, which complicates efforts to save these critically endangered creatures. These ancient animals are targeted by poachers for their intricate shells that can be made into items such as cigar boxes and sunglasses. To make matters worse, Hawksbills are hooked by fishing boats and entangled in nets. Frequently they eat and suffocate on plastic floating throughout the ocean. The Nature Conservancy is working to save these turtles by monitoring their migration with satellite trackers, a key tool to saving them. Understanding migration patterns can help save them from extinction.

CHANGE THE STORY

FOR REFUGEE WOMEN & GIRLS

Success Story

Amina, an 18-year old Syrian girl, jokes that one day she will run for prime minister, as her perception of early marriage and working women has changed after attending workshops. She is committed to her education and her mother, who married at age 13, supports Amina’s decision.

(Location and photo of individual not provided for security reasons)

Of the roughly 5.6 million Syrian refugees forced to flee the ongoing civil war, approximately 1.5 million are in Lebanon. Along with the turmoil of being uprooted from their homes, refugees struggle to access basic supplies. Language barriers and conflict-induced trauma causes additional uncertainty. MADRE works to assist refugee women and girls to overcome these challenges as they begin to rebuild their lives. Through workshops - which include topics such as, gender-based violence, early and/or child marriage and health and human rights - women and men are learning to change the stigma surrounding women’s reproductive health and perceptions of women’s role in society.

The bike shop has also created jobs for former children of the orphanage. In 2019 with the support of AGI, EOH opened a satellite bike shop, helping provide a transportation alternative and greater access to the nearest hospital.

SAVING

SIGHT

In Tanzania, the bacterial eye disease Trachoma, is prevalent in the poorest areas. If left untreated, trachoma infections can result in eyelids turned inward and ultimately blindness. IMA World Health has worked with the Ministry of Health to surgically repair Trachoma’s blinding effects, and to provide drugs to prevent the disease’s spread. Trained health workers screen and identify eye disease and refer patients for treatment. During the screening process, health workers diagnose people with other eye conditions, such as glaucoma and chronic eye ailments. To date, more than 8,000 people have been diagnosed with eye complications.

In the US, tons of usable items, such as medical care supplies, pencils and crayons, are discarded into our landfills yearly, while rural Andean Bolivian communities with poverty rates up to 94 percent lack the most basic medical and school supplies. Mano a Mano collects donated medical care and school supplies in the US and ships them to Bolivia, where they are distributed to rural clinics, individuals with disabilities and schools throughout the country.

30 AGI INTERNATIONAL

Cause 30 helps programs that didn’t receive much support. Last year, we boosted an environmental cause, allowing more than 220 young women to participate in a recycling program. Without the boost, only 80 women could participate. Your gift to this program will enable all causes to succeed.

Your gift to Cause 31 will enable us to grow our mission, which means helping more people in need.

Alternative Gifts International operates mostly through the help of dedicated volunteers. Last year, more than 8,500 volunteer hours helped us rewrite the stories of families in need. Through your gifts, we are creating global change. Volunteers are based across the US striving for each cause to succeed. 90 percent of each donated dollar is directed to the causes in this catalog.
