Ignition Coil Pack Mitsubishi Eclipse 1990-1998 Repair Guide 1991-98 2.0L Engines EXCEPT 1995-98 2.0L NON-TURBO ENGINES See Figures 1 and 2 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and ignition coil harness connector. 2. Measure the primary coil resistance as follows: a. Measure the resistance between terminals 3 and 2 (coils at the No. 1 and No. 4 cylinder sides) of the ignition coil, and between terminals 3and 1 (coils at the No. 2 and No. 3 cylinder sides). b. Compare reading to the desired primary coil resistance of 0.70-0.86 ohms. 3. Measure the coil secondary resistance as follows: a. Detach the connector from the ignition coil. b. Measure the resistance between the high-voltage terminals for the No. 1 and No. 4 cylinders, and between the high-voltage terminals for the No. 2 and No. 3 cylinders. c. The desired secondary coil resistance is 11.3-15.3 kilo-ohms.

4. If the readings are not within the specified value, replace the ignition coil.

Power Transistor (Ignition Module) Mitsubishi Eclipse 1990-1998 Repair Guide When testing the power transistor(s), an analog-type circuit tester should be used. 1. To test the No. 1 and 4 cylinders: a. Connect the negative terminal of a 1.5 volt dry cell battery to terminal 3 of the power transistor; then check whether there is continuity between terminals 8 and 3 when terminal 7 and the positive (+) terminal are connected and disconnected. Connect the negative probe of the tester to terminal 8 of the power transistor. b. With terminal 7 and the positive (+) lead connected, there should be continuity between terminal 8 and terminal 3. With terminal 7 and the positive (+) lead disconnected, there should be no continuity between terminal 8 and terminal 3. 2. To test the No. 2 and 3 cylinders: a. Connect the negative terminal of a 1.5 volt dry cell battery to terminal 3 of the power transistor; then check whether there is continuity between terminals 1 and 3 when terminal 2 and the positive (+) terminal are connected and disconnected. Connect the negative probe of the tester to terminal 1 of the power transistor. b. With terminal 2 and the positive (+) lead connected, there should be continuity between terminal 1 and terminal 3. With terminal 2 and the positive (+) lead disconnected, there should be no continuity between terminal 1 and terminal 3. 3. If the results of the tests are not as indicated above, replace the power transistor.

1. 2. 3. 4.

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Tag and disconnect the wires from the power transistor. Remove the retaining screws and lift the power transistor from the engine. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
