In the year 1095 – Pope Urban II had just proclaimed the 1st Crusade – the Benedictine monastery of Alpirsbach was founded by counts Ruotman von Hausen, Adalbert von Zollern, and Alwig von Sulz. Herewith was laid the corner-stone of a private brewery of singular character, for 800 eventful years and numerous owners later, the former monastery became the property of the post-house landlord Köbel.
Beer drinking was popularised in the western world by monks, and particularly by the members of the Benedictine order.
Shortly afterwards, his brother-in-law, Carl Glauner, took over the brewery and today, in the fourth generation, Carl W. Glauner continues the successful running of this family brewery. Over the years it has become the best-known in BadenWürttemberg and ranks among the top 50 of the more than 1000 breweries in Germany. Nowadays, Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu is not only available in most areas of Germany, but also in neighbouring countries.
The first monasteries and abbeys hereabouts were established during the reign of Charlemagne, mostly in the south of the country, and it wasn’t long before the Brothers turned their hand to brewing. The modern-day brewing industry still owes a lot to the monks’ skill and ingenuity, their refinement of ingredients and production methods. They it was who discovered that hops not only act as a preservative but, together with the malt, also give the resulting product a characteristic flavour.
There are various reasons for the widespread popularity and high esteem of Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu. The high standard of technology, the knowledge of the monks’ traditional art of brewing, one of the best spring water sources – all factors which enable our master brewers to produce beers of ourstanding quality. Plus the Glauner family’s personal sense of historical obligation to ensure that the utmost care is taken in the brewing of our beer. But that’s not all. Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu has always had close ties with its home town and people. That’s why we not only strive to preserve the monastic art of brewing, but also to maintain and safeguard other values. These include the natural environment as well as diverse cultural activities, an important aspect of your present-day quality of life. Enterprises thus originating from the brewery’s sense of responsibility, such as the Alpirsbacher glass-works, have since become established institutions.
