What is Alpha Lambda Delta? Alpha Lambda Delta is a first year honor society for students who have obtained a 3.5 GPA or higher in their first semester at California University of Pennsylvania. To graduate as a member of ALD, students must complete at least 15 CAP points and 15 service hours registered to the organization, and maintain a 3.25 GPA.

The Officers of ALD 2017-2018

Junior Advisor: Allison Kuklar Senior Advisors: Miranda Andrews, Keara Ashworth, and Quintin Sano Advisors: Dori Eichelberger and Rhonda Gifford

Kaylie Rusek Co-President

Junior, Early Childhood Education Major

“Hi! I’m Kaylie Rusek, one of the co-presidents for ALD! Joining ALD and taking leadership positions has been the best decision of my college career. I have met a lot of new people, I have been supported academically, and I have gained confidence in myself as a student leader.”

Angela Clark Co-President

Senior, Criminal Justice Major

“I’m Angela Clark, Co-President of ALD. I’m a senior at Cal U as a Criminal Justice major. When I joined ALD, I had no idea how much I’d love the activities we did and the amazing people I’d meet. I encourage others to try your best with everything you do and I bet you’ll surprise yourself.”

John Bissontz Vice President

Junior, Dual Major in Electrical Engineering Technology and Computer Science

“I’m John Bissontz, second year, but technically a junior, dual major in Electrical Engineering Technology and Computer Science. I’m excited to build my leadership skills while working with members of the top of the class. A motivational quote: ‘Never give up. The sacrifice and determination of today will lead to a brighter tomorrow.’”

Leah Taylor Secretary

Sophomore, Criminal Justice Major

“Hey, I’m Leah Taylor, I’m a sophomore and a Criminal Justice major. I’m the secretary of ALD, and I love being part of this group because it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, help out around Cal and the community, and have fun. Being a part of ALD is a great achievement, and if you work hard it will be worth it! I’m really excited to see what this year has in store for us, and to meet all the new members!”

Paul MacLean Treasurer

Computer Science Major

“I am Paul MacLean, a Computer Science undergrad at Cal U. I do things that don’t seem to align to my personal interests, and that’s my favorite part about me. For ALD, I threw out a line in the direction of leadership just to see what would happen. I am now the treasurer of ALD, and I have been introduced and inducted into the ALD family, something I would have never known existed had I not taken a chance. I encourage all my fellow students to be open people, and willing to chance some things in the hopes of expanding your boundaries. You may surprise yourself.”

Autumn Benjamin Editor

Sophomore, English Literature major and Communication Studies minor

“Being involved in ALD gives you so many opportunities to grow and experience all of the wonderful resources that Cal has to offer its students.

Hannah Burns Historian

Sophomore, Secondary Ed. English Major and Theatre minor

“Hello! I’m Hannah Burns, a sophomore Secondary Ed. major at Cal. Teaching, learning, and experiencing new things has been a lifelong passion of mine. I love to branch out and get involved in as much as I can on campus. ALD was a perfect fit for my desire to pursue academics, refine my skills, and also make friends and create great memories. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be part of such an incredible group, and I’m so excited that I get to share the memories we’ve made and events we’ve worked hard on through the scrapbook!”

Breanna Gipe

Social Media Manager Sophomore, Communications: Radio and TV major

“Hi! I’m Breanna, I’m a sophomore here at Cal U and I’m a Communications major with a focus in Radio and TV. I am the social media manager for ALD so I run all the social media pages. It’s an awesome officer position and I love doing it! I am so proud of myself for being part of this club because of how far I’ve come since I first started college. I have excelled more than I ever thought I would. It’s always important to believe in yourself and look forward, even if forward seems like it’s ages away. I’m so happy to work with the other officers and see what the future holds for ALD and myself!”

Allison Kuklar Junior Advisor

Junior, Pre-K-4 Education / Special Education PreK-8 major

“Hello! My name is Allison Kuklar and I am from Uniontown, Pennsylvania. I am a junior Pre-K Education / Special Education Pre-K-8 major. This is my third year involved in Alpha Lambda Delta and second year serving as an officer. Other than ALD, I am president of the Council for Exceptional Children, a peer mentor and a work study in the College of Education. I joined Alpha Lambda Delta to gain networking and professional development experience, as well as build friendships with other students who have similar career goals.

Keara Ashworth Senior Advisor

Senior, Parks and Recreation major with minors in Event Planning and Tourism studies

“My advice to our freshman – get involved with as much as you can and have fun, because these four years go way faster than you think!”

Quinton Sano Senior Advisor

Senior, Sport Management major and Business minor

“My advice to freshman is to make your college experience beneficial by taking advantage of opportunities that surface. Network with as many people as you can and don’t be afraid to reach out to huge CEOs and CFOs (they enjoy talking about themselves). Finally, spend time with individuals that will support you and encourage you to become the successful individual you are.”

Miranda Andrews

Senior Advisor Senior, Biology/ Pre-Med Major

At the start of the Fall semester, the new officers were invited to help the previous officers create a new tri-fold to be displayed at Cal U’s Organizational Fair. It included what ALD is, the benefits of joining, potential scholarships and awards, info about our Career Advantage Program, examples of our service activities, and membership requirements.

Angela Clark and Allison Kuklar set up a table at Cal U’s huge Organization Fair to promote Alpha Lambda Delta to the incoming freshmen and current students with the newly decorated tri-fold. They handed out door hangers that included information about ALD on them, and discussed the professional development and leadership opportunities, service events, and more that ALD has to offer!

Our chapter wanted to find a way to introduce Alpha Lambda Delta to our freshmen during their first semester so they would be familiar with us and why they should consider joining ALD if they received an invitation. We came up with the idea of creating De-Stress Bags to give to them before finals week. This was also a service event for our members, and was a successful way for us to introduce ourselves to the freshmen at Cal U in their First Year Seminar class. Our members loved this service activity, and new students at Cal enjoyed their goodies as well as our short presentation to their class.

Our Editor, Autumn Benjamin, was featured in the 2018 copy of The Flame, where she highlighted our newest initiatives to get Alpha Lambda Delta members involved in our chapter.

For the second year in a row, our chapter was awarded the Alpha Silver Membership Award for the 2017 - 2018 year. The Alpha Award calculates the yield percentage of new member invitees, with the silver level being 8089% higher.

We use our Twitter and Instagram to promote #ALDTuesday where members can submit a photo of themselves wearing ALD gear to win some ALD swag prizes like bags, bottles, bracelets or t-shirts! Here are some examples of #ALDTuesday posts and submissions!

CAP Activities The Career Advantage Program (CAP) is a one-of-a-kind career building program at California University of Pennsylvania. The program helps students develop professional skills and experiences geared toward their future career. As part of our chapter, Alpha Lambda Delta requires our members to complete 15 CAP points before their graduation to earn graduation cords. Examples of CAP activities include doing internships, joining an organization, on-campus job shadowing, creating a resume, mock interviews and more!

Finals Bags We invited our members to make finals bags to give to freshmen at Cal during their First Year Seminar class. We thought it would be a great way to introduce ALD to them. The bags included funny jokes and words of encouragement, scantrons, post-it-notes, pencils, and some bubble wrap for stress relief! The event was a success for both the freshmen, and our members.

Taco Tuesday

Taco Tuesday was another event geared towards Freshmen. They were invited to have some walking tacos and learn about Alpha Lambda Delta!

The Big Event The Big Event is a campus wide service project where all organizations and students are invited to help clean up around the community! Here is Cal U’s Alpha Lambda Delta at the event!

The Pet Project For the National Service Project, our chapter decided to create pet beds and chew toys for one of the local shelters in our area, The Washington Area Humane Society. We collected t-shirt donations from all around campus so we could upcycle them into the beds and toys!

We were even featured on the Washington Area Humane Society’s Facebook Page!

De-Stress Library Event ALD set up a table in our library from May 1st through the 3rd and invited students to de-stress before finals week by making their own de-stress bags with coloring pages, cookies and erasers. We also had drinks and snacks to enjoy while studying!
