The second annual fundraiser, in support of the Canadian Golden Retriever Adoption Service and the Ottawa Dog Rescue, will run from 1 to 9 p.m. at 1943 Blakeney Road in Pakenham. It's the home of event organizer Janet Burns, who also owns Dog Dayz Care & Training Inc. in Kanata. The concept for the event came one day during a conversation between Burns and her friend, popular Ottawa singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards, who will headline the outdoor concert. "We just started talking and I said I had the perfect spot to host the event, so let's make it a fundraising event," Burns noted. In the inaugural edition

last year, $7,000 was raised for both organizations, which are near and dear to Burns' heart. She is a professional dog trainer and canine behaviour consultant. "I own a dog daycare and training facility, so I'm all about dogs," she explained. "And I feel these are really important causes. There are so many dogs who are given up or given up on and most of them need a second chance. There are a lot of dogs that need homes." Burns said all proceeds will go to the adoption service and dog rescue to cover costs associated with foster care and veterinary bills before the animals can be adopted. "This all costs a lot of money," she stated. The Canadian Golden Retriever Adoption Service is based in Barrie and is known as one of the country's largest singlebreed rescues. The nonprofit organization was started in 1990 and has no paid staff. Its mission is to

musicians, including Midnight Vesta and Braden Foulkes. Midnight Vesta are a Canadian outfit based in Toronto, who began as a banjo driven folk band, but have transitioned to a quartet with a focus on guitars and harmony. They released their debut album, Seconds, in 2017.

Stittsville's Foulkes' music is heavily influenced by folk and blues. He recently released his first EP, Beauty of Life. "All of the musicians are playing for free and donating their time; nobody is taking a fee," Burns explained. Burns said there's plenty to take in on her 3.5-acre property other than the

music. There will be a silent auction and 50/50 draws and people are encouraged to bring along lawn chairs and swimsuits, paddle boards, kayaks and canoes to experience the Mississippi River. A barbecue and refreshments will also be on offer. "There are plenty of things to do throughout the day," she noted.

There are a limited number of tickets available, at $35 per person and they must be purchased in advance. Admission is free for kids under 12. Those interested in purchasing tickets should send Burns an e-transfer to janet@dogdayz.ca. While it is a benefit for dogs, guests are being asked to leave their pets at home. "We are selling the tickets this way because there's no extra fees involved," she said. "There are no administration fees. INCREASE FINES FOR BUTTHEADS One of our reporters had every reason last week to fume upon seeing a smouldering cigarette butt lying on the gravel shoulder of a local road, likely thrown out of a passing car's window. Prior to recent rains, the woods and fields throughout the Ottawa Valley were tinder dry. In fact, Mississippi Mills remains under a partial burn ban. Several fires broke out in Lanark County, including a 10-acre blaze on a farm outside of Perth, as well as the loss of livestock and a barn in a July 17 Toledo fire. So with the possibility of forest fires so high, it's plain stupid to flip cigarette butts into the grass or bush along our roadways. And illegal too. Fortunately more and more smokers realize that it's not acceptable to leave their butts lying around. Remember when gathering places in our communities had piles of butts littered outside after a major event. Gross. Especially for those tasked with cleaning them up. Now most smokers deposit their butts in receptacles provided for their convenience. But there are still those who think it's acceptable and safe to litter the landscape with their butts. They seem to think that one cloudburst will erase all worries about roadside fires. However, it's apparent that while Smiths Falls can get a dousing, an area a few kilometres down the road can be missed completely by the storm. Our careless smokers seem to believe that because of our deciduous forests Ontarians don't face the danger from fire they do in B.C. and Alberta. Wrong. Serious forest fires up the line from Petawawa and now in the Parry Sound area have affected traffic and air quality in those areas. It's just fortunate no homes have been lost, so far. Last summer's devastating fires in British Columbia and Alberta sparked those provinces to crack down on motorists who throw 'lit debris' out their windows. In B.C. fines under the wildlife and highway acts can range from $175 to $575 for offenders. Vancouver has boosted the fine to $500 for those drivers caught "tossing smoking material in a hazardous way." Willow Creek in Alberta has instituted fines from between $500 and $10,000 if your butt starts a bush or grass fire. And it's not just Canada. Washington State has boosted the fine to $1,025 during fire bans. The $500 fine in Western Australia rises up to a maximum of $25,000 and/or 12 months in jail if the offence happens during fire season. Ontario's police tend to levy littering fines ranging from $110 to $180 if they notice flagrant instances. As the danger from forest fires grows in Ontario, it's time the province follows the lead of many other jurisdictions in giving police the discretion of imposing much higher fines if butts are thrown out during a fire ban. The danger is real. That has to be impressed on the few who are still oblivious to how perilous and unsightly their habit is of improperly discarding cigarette butts.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY READER: CANCELLATION OF CAP AND TRADE PROGRAM NEEDS CLOSER LOOK DEAR EDITOR: I wonder why Premier Doug Ford was so anxious to cancel the cap and trade program as set up by the former provincial Liberals without closer examination nor a replacement, when it seems that the whole world is on fire. Wildfires are starting earlier in the season and burning for longer exacerbated by warmer weather. Perhaps someone should break the secret to the new premier that carbon emissions are a significant contributing factor, along with building of homes in fire-prone areas and years of fire mismanagement. These contributing factors can be dealt with using political will, education and common sense. In 2017 according to the U.S. Department of the Interior, there were 71,499 wildfires which destroyed

Maybe the severity of this will hit home only when we feel the devastating effects closer to home in Lanark County. And I can see this coming because stupidity, greed and turning a blind eye to evidence does not seem to respect borders.

Last year in the second annual legion provincial championship, Almonte legion's Carl Bowden won both the singles and doubles titles, giving Almonte the right to host the 2018 finals. This year Fred Ryan of

Cooksville legion won the singles, while in doubles Bowden and his partner David Logan qualified to play his son, Derek Bowden, and Allyn Wark, also from Almonte, in one semifinal. This time it was the son who captured the bragging rights, ousting his father's team. The Bowden-Wark duo went on to win the doubles over Dan Armstrong and Dave Rittwage of Brighton, giving Almonte the right to host the provincials again next year. Teams from all over the province attended at Gem-

mill Park, competing in four divisions. Carl Bowden explained that washer toss is a relatively new sport that has caught on at Legions throughout the province. It's somewhat similar to horseshoes. Ontario Legion Command chairman Ron Goebel praised the organizers and venue for Saturday's championship. Legion District 6 sports officer Ken Johnston and his crew did a "great job," said Goebel. "I received lots of comments on how well run it was."

To compliment the exhibition Noreen Young: A Puppet Retrospective you will be able to enjoy the following: On Saturday, Aug. 11, come and join Susan Rennick Jolliffe in transforming cereal boxes, gift wrap, magazines, tissue, and copy paper into amazing marionettes at her Dancing Foolybirds and Dragons Marionette Workshop. Susan's simple and engaging approach grew out of many years working with schoolchildren all over eastern Ontario. This workshop is for all "scissor happy" individuals, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The workshop is $5 per person and there are two sessions: 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Please call and preregister. Meanwhile on a rise overlooking the family fun, the Almonte branch of the Royal Canadian Legion hosted the provincial washer toss championships complete with barbecue and beer garden. There was also a ball tournament and up in the community centre a number of entertainers sang to Almonte Old Home Weekend crowds, many who were in a dancing mood. Organizers for both events were obviously pleased by the tiein. On its Facebook page, the Almonte Old Home Weekend group congratulated Steve Maynard and organizers for the "huge success" of the family fun day, noting that Gemmill Park was "humming yesterday (Saturday) like it hasn't for many years." In return, Maynard said Old Home Weekend organizers deserve a lot of credit. They organized an "amazing weekend" that had "brought back memories of the 'olden days'."

In May and June of this year, the North Lanark (District 7) +55 seniors have competed in 14 different games, ranging from card games to shuffleboard, lawn bowling and golf. The yearly $20 fee allows one to participate in all the summer and winter games. This year is special because the winners are eligible to compete at the Ontario Games in Mississauga on Aug. 10 to 12. There will be a bus going, and the local district subsidizes those going on the bus. In the alternate years to the provincial games, a one-day Regional Games event is held. In 2019, our district will host seniors from all over eastern Ontario, so this is a big project requiring hours of planning, applying for grants and working with the local municipalities to pull off a successful event. Our district covers Mississippi Mills, Carleton Place, Beckwith and part of Lanark Highlands, so it's a chance to bring several hundred people to our area who, hopefully, will return because they will be so impressed with the beauty of our area. CARLETON PLACE WATER DRAGONS HAVE BIG SUMMER OF CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS Two local swimmers, Skylar Etherington and Breckin Gormley, along with their head coach Amanda Etherington, headed to Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 22 for a weeklong swimming competition among the very best age group swimmers in Canada. The Canadian Junior Championships is the highest national-level competition for swimmers aged 18 and under. Approximately 700 athletes were in attendance from 147 clubs. Swimmers from 10 provinces and five countries were represented. On the first day on competition, Gormley finished

second in preliminaries with a personal best putting her in second place heading into finals. She won the silver medal with a time of 1:02.99, putting her on the cusp of a Canadian trial time. Both girls swam well, cheered on back home by many teammates, family and friends. The Carleton Place Water Dragons finished the meet off in 51st place, giving them one of the most successful seasons ever. Mains earns gold While Gormley and Etherington were in Winnipeg, fellow teammate Trevor Mains was in Truro, N.S., competing at the

Down syndrome World Championships. Trevor won a heat gold medal in his 100 metre individual medley, capping off a successful meet for Mains that saw him swim many personal bests. JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT PREMIER'S PLAN TO REDUCE MUNICIPAL COUNCILS JEFF MAGUIRE Column

The decision by newly elected Ontario Premier Doug Ford to cut Toronto City Council nearly in half has created a wave of controversy in Canada's biggest city and moved the usually low-key subject of municipal politics squarely into the spotlight. The timing of the move, coming as it did just as nominations for provincewide municipal elections in October were closing, is highly questionable. Ford hasn't done himself or his Progressive Conservative government any favours by appearing to be dictatorial and immovable on this subject. I don't agree with Ford's timing or the proposed methodology. However I do think the premier is on the right track with the idea of

reducing the size of municipal councils, in our largest municipalities at least. During the election campaign, which ended with a Tory majority government, Ford vowed to reduce what I will term "the bloat" which has afflicted municipal government in this province for far too long. It's a nation-wide problem to be honest. Government is far too big, far too complicated and it is getting larger and more complex. People are fed up with this trend and, in part, that's why the PC's are back in power at Queen's Park. At the same time I can understand the dismay expressed by Toronto Mayor John Tory with respect to how this particular idea was rolled out. The methodology needs to be revised and given the backlash involved that could happen. Still, I don't think Tory, other Toronto councillors or opposition members of

the Legislature can claim ignorance about Ford's intentions. The premier, who lost the last mayor's election to Tory but had previously served one term as a city councillor, has long railed against the size, cost and inefficiency of government in general and Toronto city council in particular. We will see how all of this unfolds? Personally I have major problems with two aspects of government today. One is the size and cost, which of course go hand in hand. My other complaint centres on "career politicians." Whether they're

elected at the municipal, provincial or federal levels some people appear to have settled in for life. They become so firmly ensconced that it seems the only way they will leave is through voluntary retirement or for health reasons. I'm a big believer in limiting politicians' terms in office. As a rule of thumb I would like to see a three term limit imposed at all three levels of government in Canada for any one position. In most cases that gives individuals 12 years in office. If you haven't made a mark in your constituency

or your municipality after more than a decade in office you never will. Note that I have said limits should apply to "any one position." If someone is so popular that they move up to become a mayor, a party leader or Prime Minister that's a different matter. Premier Ford's contention about Toronto city council is that it's so large and unwieldy they are not an effective decision-making body. And there's no denying that cutting government numbers and reducing bureaucracy is a potential pathway to fulfilling one of

Ford's main campaign promises. He and his party have pledged to make tax cuts and save money wherever possible. I agree that Ford's methods need refinement. Mary Clayson, a relationship manager with Canada Homestay International, says the organization is in desperate need of hosts in some specific areas. "We really, really need hosts in Almonte," she said. Four students, coming from China, Italy and Spain, will be heading to Almonte this August — but still need host families. Although there is a desperate need in Almonte, Clayson said, there is need specifically for international students that will be attending high schools in North Grenville, Carleton

IMPORTANT SUMMER JOB HELPED FAMILY SURVIVE THE WINTER YOUNG MARY PARTICIPATED IN PRESERVING AND PICKLING TRADITION, COLUMNIST RECALLS MARY COOK Column

The kitchen wore the sweet smell of sugar, vinegar, mustard, and spices, all simmering gently on the second burner of the Findlay Oval. The red and white checked oilcloth on the table had been scrubbed clean, and white porcelain basins of freshly picked beans, onions, and green tomatoes were at the ready. My sister Audrey was at one end of the table, Mother at the other. In front of each was a chopping board and kitchen knives Father had sharpened to make the

job at hand as easy as possible. By the time the day was over, there would be many jars of chili sauce, beans in brine, and green tomato pickles, all ready to take down to the shelves in the cellar to augment our meals over the winter. Still to be 'done down' would be the preserves raspberries, strawberries and chokecherry jam, and anything else Mother could find to add to the swinging shelf under the house. I sat and watched, so very anxious to be part of this very important job ... putting away stores for the winter. Mother could sense that I wanted to help, and so she said I could have the job of washing the beans. They were already soaking in cold water, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they had to washed further. But Mother was high on cleanliness, and there wouldn't be one bean used until it had been thor-

oughly washed. She said that each one had to be rubbed separately, not simply swished around in the water. And so I began, taking one bean at a time out of the cold water, and pinching it through two fingers and putting it out on the spotlessly clean tea towel waiting for the chopping board. It was Audrey's job to cut off the ends of each bean, and then put as many as she could into the empty jars that had been boiling on the stove, standing them upright. Once each jar had been packed tightly, Mother poured cold salted water in it, and I knew that when winter came, those very beans would taste like they had just come out of the garden. My three brothers and Father never came near the kitchen when the job of preserving and pickling was going on. Mother had no time for idle chatter, and the brothers knew, if they hung around long enough,

they would get the hateful job of carting the bottles down to the cellar. It was that cellar which scared the daylights out of me. You could get into Aunt Bertha's cellar by simply opening a trap door off the kitchen, and going down a ladder. But the only way you could get into our cellar was to go outside and heave open the two huge flat doors slanted against the side of the house. The cellar was nothing more than a pit dug out of the ground. How I hated to go down those few steps into that space under the house! My hateful brother Emerson said he knew for a fact snakes lived in the cellar, and he also said spiders as

big as bullfrogs loved the damp darkness. Every year Father brought fresh sand from the gravel pit and replaced what was down there, and this is where carrots and parsnips were buried, and most amazing to me, they never froze over the long winters. When Mother and Audrey finished, and all the jars were sealed tightly, Mother kept a bowl of chili sauce out for our supper that night. Father loved chili sauce but he didn't eat it like the rest of the family. He poured his into a fruit nappy and dipped thick slices of buttered fresh bread into it, and ate it that way. He never failed to say, 'By gar, that's good, let me

tell ya', and the bowl would be empty by the time supper was over. I would look over at all the sealers ready to be taken down to the cellar, and I would know, and be thankful, that that day's work would help us get through another winter. The 56th Annual General Meeting of Almonte General Hospital Corporation was held on July 23rd. Here are a few of the past year’s highlights: • Three new family physicians joined our team. • Implementation of the Cerner electronic medical record continued, improving quality and safety by standardizing documentation and providing more accurate, real-time information. • Researchers from York and Carleton Universities interviewed residents, family, volunteers and staff at Fairview Manor (FVM). They were particularly impressed by the work of the Art in the Manor Committee. The integration of FVM with the hospital and medical services received considerable praise, as did our home cooked food. • A three-month Community Paramedicine pilot program resulted in the deferral of 74 calls to 911 and 68 Emergency Department visits - and the administration of 212 influenza vaccinations. • Our new Patient & Family Advisory Committee, and the existing Resident and Family Councils, provide input on all aspects of care.

• The Hospital admitted 1,442 inpatients, including a record 412 babies. The Emergency Department saw 16,922 visits and the outpatient clinics, day hospital and day surgery program cared for 14,697 patient visits. • The Hospital continues to have lower readmission rates for inpatients and lower ED wait times than the averages for the Champlain LHIN and Ontario. • Fairview Manor, where resident and family satisfaction surveys show strong positive results, provided 40,361 days of care. This represents 97% occupancy. • Lanark County Paramedics responded to 19,480 calls and continue to receive very positive feedback from the patients they serve. The Record News caught up with some of the hosts at a barbecue hosted by Canada Homestay International at Edmonds Lock on Tuesday, July 31. Jill Ellison, of Carleton Place, has been a host for the last three years and has welcomed numerous international students into her home from both Japan and China. "It's a very rewarding experience," she said. Ellison stays in touch with those that have stayed with her. Her advice for other prospective hosts: "Absolutely try it." And, said Ellison, be open-minded. "Their cultures are so different. Talk to them, find out what their life is like," she said. "They've got tremendous stories." Couple Terry and Marissa Bennett, who live across the street from Ellison in Carleton Place, also

are hosts. Both family's host students have hung out together. "They're all friends," said Terry. "All the kids have been so nice." Marrissa said when a Japanese student they were hosting left to go back home, she gave him cheese slices so that he could show his brother how to make grilled cheese — something he newly discovered at the Bennetts' home. Don Huntley, of Smiths Falls, also hosts. He says the experience of being a host over the last four years is really rewarding. "I get to learn a lot about Chinese culture," he said. This time is no different as he brings Canadian born, Nashville residing Linda McRae (Spirit of the West), a wonderful singer/songwriter multi-instrumentalist (clawhammer banjo, electric guitar), called "one of the true, soulful pioneers of honest roots music," by Blackie & the Rodeo King's Colin Linden, Linda brings integrity and commitment to the craft of songwriting. Joining them is Kim Richey, a two time Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, also from Nashville who's written hits for Radney Foster, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless,

among others. Gracing stages around the world, her talent adds beautifully to the mix. Even better, we have a wonderful young opener too!Mia Kelly is an Ottawa/Gatineau-based 15year-old singer/songwriter who has been performing for eight years in bands, solo shows and musical theatre. David passed away in hospital, Perth on Monday, July 30, 2018 at the age of 86. Loved father of Dan Hannah and Kim Hannah (Stephen Tymchuk). Step-father of Mike Bender (Karen) and the late Peter Paquette. Dear brother of Bill (Julie) Hannah and Joan (the late Carl) Johansen. David was predeceased by his parents David and Anne Hannah and brother John Hannah. Fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. David was born and grew up in the Toronto area and following school joined a pharmaceutical and drug store wholesaling company travelling across vast territories in the Toronto area visiting drug stores. The lure of country living along with the opening of the Ottawa branch David, his first wife Frances and family moved from Toronto to Navan where he travelled throughout Eastern Ontario with the company and following a time was promoted to management. Upon retirement, David and his second wife Ellie moved to Bass Lake and converted the summer family cottage to a permanent home. He enjoyed volunteering with the Navan Grads Junior B hockey team when living in Navan, bartending at the Smiths Falls RCAF Hall to raise money for the local air cadets, spending time outdoors enjoying nature and line dancing with friends. David loved to build and renovate homes, plumbing, electrical work and other trades. He was very civic minded and enjoyed helping others. David will be sadly missed and forever loved by all who knew him. Family and friends may pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 112 Beckwith St. N., Smiths Falls on Friday, August 10, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. followed by service in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. Interment, Hillcrest Cemetery. With already broken hearts the Moore family has to once again announce the loss of yet another one of their beautiful sons, Dennis Moore Jr. (aka “Dutch”, aka “Little D”). At the age of twentythree he leaves behind his best friend and mom #2 Kelly-Jeane Whitney of Grimsby, his father Dennis Moore and his mother Shelley Koziel-Moore, both of Jasper. Also survived by his sisters Krista Flaro and husband Matt, Sabrina Moore, Michelle Nagle and husband Paul, Katrina McIntyre and husband Andrew, Mercedez McGaffey, Angie Bak, Angela Hewitt and husband Chase.
