CANDIDATES FINALIZED FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTION ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com

There will be no shortage of candidates vying for council seats in Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills and Beckwith in the Oct. 22 municipal election. The lists have now been finalized after the nomination deadline passed Friday, July 27 at 2 p.m. The following are the candidates running for council positions in Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills and Beckwith.

Carleton Place There is one mayor, one deputy mayor and five council positions up for grabs in the Town of Carleton Place. Incumbent mayor Louis Antonakos, who is completing his first term as mayor, will compete for the top job against newcomers Roland Wutherich, Ralph Lee, Thomas Doiron and current Coun. Doug Black. Black originally filed papers to run for deputy mayor but re-filed on July 20 after current deputy mayor Jerry

Flynn withdrew from the mayoral race that same day, citing personal reasons. The deputy mayor spot will now be contested current Coun. Sean Redmond, who is finishing up his first term around the council table, Craig Rogers and Rae Dulmage. Redmond also re-filed his papers on July 20, vying instead for deputy mayor instead of councillor. Thirteen candidates will be seeking the five councillor positions. They include: incumbent Theresa Fritz, Edward (Toby) Randell, Tracy Kwissa, Kyle McCulloch, Jeff Atkinson, Paolo Villa, Wes Parsons, Mark Piper, Jennifer Rogers, Linda Seccaspina, Andrew Tennant, Jamie DeBaie and Carolyn Gerbac.

TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com Luxury apartments are under construction and now renting in the heart of Carleton Place - a project of Ottawa-based Lépine Corporation. Johanne's Court, located at 258 Coleman St., consists of three four-storey buildings, each with 50 apartments, for a total of 150 units. The buildings are positioned to create a central courtyard with pond. Encompassing seven different styles, Johanne's Court puts forward three different types of apartments: one bedroom with a den ($1,850 per month); two bedrooms ($2,400 per month); and two bedrooms with a den ($2,500 per month). Depending on the floor, apartments have either a balcony or terrace. There is an early bird pricing special until July 31, which sees a discount

per month in the $100-200 range. Included in the rental rates: heat; hot water; water and sewer; air conditioning; one underground parking sport; one storage locker; six appliances, including an in suite washer and dryer; and access to several amenities, including fitness centre, lounge areas, barbecue supplied areas and gazebo. David deJong is the rental specialist for the project. "We are currently processing leases for Johanne's Court," he noted, and "we have had a very positive response to date." As of today, Johanne's Court is nearly 20 per cent leased. Occupancy for phase one, the first 50 units, is scheduled for July 1, 2019. Johanne's Court has two presentation offices set up. The Carleton Place location is at Century 21 Explorer Realty Inc. on

dents and others who are looking for quality rental units." Francis Lépine is the president of Lépine Corporation. He told the Canadian Gazette the project is named after his wife. "Today, she will turn the first shovel of earth," Lépine said. Son William was the inspiration for William's Court, a five-building, 741unit community on the north side of Highway 417, just east of the Kanata Centrum Shopping Centre. "The success of this pro-

ject led to the resurgence of rentals," Lépine said. "It is now feasible to build rentals in the suburbs." Saint Émilion in Kanata, currently under construction, is named after son Emile. "We are going to be opening up again in Kanata," Lépine stated. "We are also going to Barrhaven, and I landed some land in Orleans." A second-generation builder, Lépine's father was well known in Montreal for constructing pyramid-style buildings. "You look at them today and you cannot put a date

to them because they still look good, even though they are 50 or 60 years old," he said. Lépine moved to Ottawa 20 years ago, starting his own business. He is hopeful "this new model of apartments will be repeated numerous times...not only by our company, but other builders will see the light." A tower crane was erected on the Johanne's Court site, changing Carleton Place's skyline. For more information, visit http://lepineapartments.com/johannescourt/.

Five candidates will do battle for the Ramsay ward positions, including incumbent and longtime council member John Edwards, Bev Holmes, Ken Kicksee, Tony Barr and Cynthia Guerard. Rounding out the candidates for the lone Pakenham ward spot are incumbent Coun. Denzil Ferguson

Get ready for an awesome day of family fun in Carleton Place. The Bridge St. Summer Fest, presented by the Downtown Carleton Place Business Improvement Association (BIA), returns on Saturday, Aug. 4, running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once again, Carleton Place's main thoroughfare, Bridge Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic from Mill Street to Lake Avenue. The Bridge St. Summer Fest is a rain or shine event, and it is free to attend. During this year's event, Bridge Street will be lined with vendors, entertainment and children's activities. A number of merchants are holding summer sales. There will be classic rock music by Gibby Gibster (a.k.a. Gib Rozon Band) as well as a five-piece Dixieland jazz band led by local Peter Brown. Strolling entertainers include AllezUp Circus, a professional, hand-to-hand circus duo from Montreal, bringing a playful and fun dynamic to all of their presentations. Bridge St. Summer Fest-goers can expect a non-stop, 45-minute-long blend of juggling, comedy, hula-hoops, acrobatics and hand-to-hand balancing. There will be two professional stilt walkers from Montreal and Rockabilly Joe, a circus artist and street performer with a 1950s twist. The children's area is located by the town's post office, and there will be a steel drum band in the vicinity. Bridge St. Summer Fest draws thousands of visitors, with people coming from the Ottawa Valley, Kingston, Brockville, Kanata, Stittsville, Ottawa, Gatineau and more. There are periods in the day when the street's concrete is not visible. Given the number of people expected to be out and

OPINION EDITORIAL

BE BEACH SMART Spending days at the beach is a summer ritual that we all enjoy, but it's important to know when it's safe to swim or if you should skip that dip. In late June, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit began its annual weekly water samplings of the public beaches within its jurisdiction. These include beaches in Almonte, Carleton Place, Lanark, Smiths Falls and Rideau Ferry in Lanark County, and others in North Grenville, Merrickville, Westport, Portland and Toledo in Leeds and Grenville. According to release by the health unit, five water samples are taken each week and tested for E. coli bacteria. They state that the bathing water standard is 100 E. coli, so any water tested that exceeds that amount will receive a sign posted at the beach notifying the public it's unsafe to swim. Weekly updates indicating which beaches are open, closed or have received caution status are released every Friday morning. The testing will continue until Aug. 31. As of the last testing results updated at July 25 at 3 p.m., all public beaches are open with the exception of Centennial beach in Carleton Place and South Crosby (Sand Lake) beach in Rideau Lakes, which are in caution status. The level of bacteria at the aforementioned beaches is currently not recommended for swimming. This is a public service the health unit provides informing the public that the level of bacteria might be a health risk if you or your family go swimming. Families can still choose to go into the water at their own risk, but there are several reasons why you shouldn't. "Research has shown that when people are swimming at beaches where the water has a high E. coli level, there is a direct relationship with an increase in ear, eye, nose and throat infections in swimmers," states the release. The unsafe for swimming sign will remain at a beach until it meets the bathing water standard. E. coli isn't the only thing tested when the health unit samples water from our local beaches. They are also looking for blue-green algae blooms, accidental spills or anything else that could pollute the water, making it unsafe for the public. This could include dirty water from storm sewers or streets, faulty septic systems, etc. Other tips to keep in mind when navigating public beaches is to avoid swimming if high winds cause the water to look cloudy or after a heavy rain. There are plenty of tips available, as well as information on the weekly beach results, on the health unit website - healthunit.org. It's been a hot and humid summer so far and many of us have taken advantage of the beach to cool off from the sun's rays. Most of the time the water we swim in is safe, states the health unit, but caution should always be taken to ensure you and your family have a safe remainder of the summer.

Research has shown that when people are swimming at beaches where the water has a high E. coli level, there is a direct relationship with an increase in ear, eye, nose and throat infections in swimmers.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY ROTARY CLUB THANKS COMMUNITY FOR UPKEEP OF TRAIL DEAR EDITOR: The Rotary Club of Carleton Place and Mississippi Mills has as part of its mission to encourage goodwill and friendships in the community. As one of our community works, in 2005, we established the Rotary Trail, which runs between Carleton Place and Appleton. Since that time, club members have gathered on an annual basis to clean up the trail, cut branches, replace signage and seating as needed, etc. One of the biggest jobs, by far, has been to cut the grass and other plants that grow on either side of the trail, sometimes threatening (and actually managing) to creep onto the trail. For the past two years, by the time we have organized our clean up, we have arrived to find that a mysterious benefactor had already cut the grass for us. While we reaffirm our commitment to

keeping up with the trail maintenance (we have already been out to fill a hole this year), we would like to thank all those who have given of their own time and energy to contribute to this lovely trail.

VOLUNTEERS, SPONSORS THANKED FOR FISHING DERBY SUPPORT DEAR EDITOR: I wish to sincerely thank the volunteers and the sponsors of the Children's Fishing Derby that Gary Munro revived. He started it in 1975. I got involved in 1981 when I moved to Carleton Place. Our children took part back then. He ran it for 17 years. A few months back, he approached Deputy Major Jerry Flynn to get permission from Joanne Henderson in parks and recreation and the town in order to be able to use the park and to be covered by the town's in-

surance. Jerry's grandchildren participated, along with ours and he helped me cook 240 hotdogs, supplied free of charge from Ray MacLaren, manager/owner of Giant Tiger, along with free soft drinks and chips, with the help of his suppliers. The other volunteers were Dave Kirkpatrick, Geoff Montreuil, Cathie McOrmond, the manager of Crime Stoppers and Dave Joy, deputy chief of Ocean Wave Fire Company. The other sponsors were MCP Group of Companies, who donated the posters; Hanks Tire donated the beautiful big trophy that Noah Crampton won for the biggest fish; Canadian Tire for donating more than enough fishing lures so all of the 150 kids took home a prize; and also Metroland Media for the coverage of the event. Please support these very generous sponsors. Without your support as customers this very worthwhile, fun event could not take place.

STONEFIELDS TO UNDERTAKE WEDDING CHAPEL EXPANSION Stonefields is pleased to announce a major transformation to its award-winning property this fall. Plans are underway to build an indoor wedding ceremony site that will accommodate up to 200 guests. The French-country inspired chapel will provide couples with an elegant indoor space for wedding ceremonies, complete with whitewashed walls, crystal chandeliers and wall-towall windows offering views of the estate. This beautiful non-denominational space has been designed to complement the Stonefields Loft, the farmhouse and the estate's heritage buildings. With this new addition, Stonefields, located in Beckwith Township, has added a fourth wedding site for couples to choose from. It also offers an indoor cer-

emony site in the event of bad weather. "We are thrilled to offer something special that we know will suit so many of our couples who either want an indoor ceremony space or wish to have some peace of mind about the weather," says Stonefields co-owner Stephanie Brown-Malenfant. "Working with our designer, architect and builder, we've designed a space reminiscent of rural country chapels, yet completely elegant on the inside. We know it will be a welcoming space for couples and guests of all backgrounds and beliefs." Stonefields is working with designer Kimberly Kostuch of KKI Designs and once again partnering with architect Susan Smith and contractor Ian Jackson of Sonder Group, who completed the stunning Stone-

fields Loft and kitchen in 2016. "The addition of the new chapel will bring more people into our community from across the province, the country and beyond," says Beckwith Township Reeve Richard Kidd. "It highlights Stonefields' commitment to its couples and to excellence in all that it does. We are proud of the team's continued growth and success." This announcement is the latest in a string of enhancements made by Stonefields, including winterizing the loft for year-round weddings, opening the Stonefields Inn, and many other beautification projects. NEW FORMAT STARTS FOR YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER THIS WEEK This week the Carleton Place Almonte Canadian Gazette embarks along a new path that takes it back to its roots. Readers will notice their community newspaper has recommitted itself to local news. No longer will it feature a regional section in the front half of the publication. Rather, news from Carleton Place, Mississip-

pi Mills and neighbouring municipalities will figure more prominently starting from the front page. This means readers will no longer have to search deep into their edition for the continuation of that week's top story. Local breaking news, council information as well as sports and human interest features

move to the lead pages instead of their traditional spot in the second section. The pagination system, which our readers have also told us causes no end of confusion, has also seen an overhaul which should make reading the paper less complicated. These changes don't mean an end to all regional coverage. It

just moves that information a bit further back, allowing us to place greater emphasis on the stories we know matter to you the most. We hope these latest adjustments to our format will help add to your enjoyment of your local newspaper. Please keep reading, in print or online, and thank you for your support.

TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com After three weeks of operation, Pharmasave in downtown Carleton Place made it official on July 12, holding a ribbon cutting to celebrate its grand opening. Located at 230 Bridge St., at the corner of High Street, Pharmasave - touted as a community pharmacy - is owned by pharmacist Nasser Sallam. Nasser will work in the store with his daughter, Nadine Sallam. He also plans to hire one other person. "We opened on June 22," Nasser told the Canadian Gazette, and "we are looking forward to supporting the health and wellness needs of the community." Mayor Louis Antonakos, councillors Theresa Fritz and Sean Redmond and town staff, including chief administrative officer Diane Smithson and municipal planner Joanna Bowes, were on hand on Thursday to offer congratulations. General manager Jackie Kavanagh and office administrator Amber Campbell represented the Carleton Place & District Chamber of Commerce, with the Downtown Carleton Place BIA represented by co-ordinator Kate Murray. Matt Billow, the territory manager at Pharmasave, also attended, along with Mary Boldt, the loans officer at Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC). Carleton Place's Pharmasave is the first pharmacy Nasser has owned; however, he has worked as a pharmacist for 27 years with different companies, including Rexall Drugstore and Shoppers Drug Mart. "I decided it was time to have a small community pharmacy," Nasser explained. "I began doing research last November." The pace Carleton Place was growing surprised him. After renting the pharmacy space and securing a $100,000 loan from Valley Heartland CFDC, "we started renovations in December," Nasser said. Valley Heartland CFDC administers a Community Loan Fund, a local investment fund to help finance new or existing small businesses for startup, expansion or stabilization plans. "I am very happy about the nature of the neighbourhood, the nature of the people," Nasser said. "Everyone has been really friendly and welcoming." He noted: "There is no other pharmacy

serving the community on the main street. It is needed. There is nothing north of the bridge. We have people who do not drive, we have seniors..." Building trust is important to the pharmacist and owner. "With a small community pharmacy, people get actual contact with their pharmacist," Nasser said. "I am planning on knowing the needs and medications of all my customers...doing patient care is the best part of my job." Services offered at the local Pharmasave include travel vaccinations, easy prescription transfer and MedAlign, which aligns a person's medications to be refilled on the same day. Furthermore, Pharmasave offers medical reviews, educational clinics, compliance packaging, flu shots and free delivery in town. According to Nasser, age has its privileges at Pharmasave. Every day is Seniors Day, offering a 10 per cent discount on regular priced merchandise. "Other stores do one day per month or one day per week," he noted. "We are doing it every day." Pharmasave has a rewards program. Join now and receive 300 welcome bonus points, a $5 in-store value. "We are so happy you are here," Antonakos said, and "we appreciate you choosing Carleton Place, having the confidence in our main street." "It is nice to see our street transformed with you a part of it," he continued. "You are a great addition, a great anchor to the downtown core." "You have extended your downtown," Boldt stressed. Antonakos noted there is a large parking lot next to the Pharmasave for added convenience. Encouraged by the response he has received to date, calling it "very promising," Nasser is already thinking about the future, with plans to have a doctor's clinic together with the pharmacy. "Right now, I am thinking a part-time doctor (three days a week) and a full-time practitioner," he said. "There is a need, especially in a growing community." Pharmasave's hours of operation are as follows: Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and closed Sunday.

Nasser lives in Kanata, only a 20-minute drive from Carleton Place. However, he is seriously considering moving to town within one year.

For more information about Pharmasave, call 613-257-3434 or visit the pharmacy's Facebook page (search Carleton Place Pharmasave).

University hearing study seeks participants.

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

If you are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids, you can register to be a part of this new hearing study† by calling: 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study.

CCHL REPRESENTS CANADA AT WORLD JUNIOR CUP JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT TOP HOCKEY PLAYERS HEADING TO RUSSIA JEFF MAGUIRE Column

The Eastern Ontariobased Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) continues to graduate top quality players who are making their mark in U.S. college ranks. Many of them move on to professional careers including some who make it to the world's biggest showcase for the sport, the National Hockey League. In recent years the 12team CCHL has been well represented at the national level. Pembroke Lumber Kings, the winningest fran-

chise in the 57 year history of the Junior A league, captured the national championship, the Royal Bank Cup (RBC), in 2011. Beginning in 2014 the powerhouse Carleton Place Canadians won four straight league titles, three consecutive Fred Page Cup tournaments (Eastern Canadian Junior A championship) and made three straight runs at the national championship. They came within an eyelash of winning the 2014 title in Vernon, British Columbia, losing a heartbreaker in overtime to Yorkton (Saskatchewan) Terriers in the RBC final. This spring Ottawa Junior Senators stopped Cana-

dians' championship run at four, winning the league final. Sens then hosted and won the Fred Page tournament, beating out three teams including league rival Carleton Place. At the RBC in Chilliwack, BC Ottawa made it to the semi-finals before losing a tight 3-2 decision to eventual tournament champion Chilliwack Chiefs. With the 2018-2019 league campaign set to begin Labour Day weekend, the CCHL is about to add another important chapter to its already impressive history. Beginning Aug. 18 an allstar team from the league will represent Canada at the prestigious 'Junior Club World Cup' tournament which this year is being hosted by Russia. The eight team, international show-

down is being played in Sochi, site of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. This marks the first time since 2015 that Canada has participated in the tournament and it will be the inaugural appearance by a CCHL squad. Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League won the 2013 tournament. The competition in Sochi is sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation and runs from Aug. 18-26. Hockey Canada is the national governing body in this country while the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) represents 10 Junior A leagues from coast-to-coast including the CCHL. Originally Jason Clarke the coach, general manager and owner of the highflying Carleton Place team

was named head coach of the squad. However an important family commitment will keep him at home. His replacement is veteran CCHL coach Mark Grady of the Smiths Falls Bears. He will be joined by another long-time league coach, Ian MacInnis of Cornwall Colts who also doubles as team GM and by assistant coach Dan Sauve of Rockland Nationals. It was MacInnis who was largely responsible for selecting the 22 man roster. Carleton Place, with seven selections, leads the way while Cornwall will ice five players and Ottawa and the Kanata Lasers two each. Smiths Falls Bears and Kemptville 73's each have one player on the squad. They have a formidable task ahead with seven other nations entering teams

in the tournament. Included are the national junior champions from host Russia and Sweden along with club teams from Switzerland, Finland, Austria, the Czech Republic and China. I will be following the team's performance in Russia closely. It's a wonderful opportunity for the CCHL athletes including seven from the Carleton Place Canadians who I have seen play so many times. I wish them the very best as they compete for Canada on the world stage! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. DESPITE THE DEPRESSION, FAMILY WAS STILL RICH IN MANY WAYS SPENDING QUIET EVENINGS TOGETHER A WARM MEMORY FOR COLUMNIST MARY COOK MARY COOK Column

The heat of the summer had settled into the old log house. Even with the windows wide open, covered with the homemade screens Father had made, very little air came in, and no heat went out. At least the Findlay Oval had been moved to the summer kitchen. When it became unbearable, after supper and after the kitchen had been redded up, we settled into a routine that gave us relief, while at the same time giving me the warmest feeling deep in my stomach, and it had nothing to do with the beating sun that had pounded down on our house all day. Father would be the first to move. He would drag out the rocking chair that sat by the stove, and from where he could rest his feet on the oven door to read the paper. Of course, there was no stove there in the summer. Then my sister Audrey would take two kitchen chairs outside and put them on the grass beside the back stoop. Without being asked, my three brothers, well aware of the routine, grabbed the braided rug from the

doorway and tossed it on the ground a few feet away from the back step where the grass was high. Mother took the twig chair, the only piece of the twig furniture she could tolerate, and moved it off the stoop to help form the circle we had made on the east side of the old log house. The sun was going down, and long shadows soon touched us, and I knew that before long, dusk would be with us, and then the blessed darkness of a Renfrew County night. Until then, there would just be idle chatter. Father talking about the hay he had cut that day, the brothers about the catch of mud pout from the Bonnechere, Audrey asking Mother if she thought the wild strawberries along the train tracks would be ready for picking. As for me, sitting on the grass at Mother's feet, I just listened, knowing I had little to add to the talk around me. Our arms and legs had been covered with something that came in a bottle from Ritza's Drugstore, so the mosquitoes stayed well away. Mother had her mouth organ, and as I knew she would, the first tune she played was The Sidewalks of New York. Sometimes, if Audrey knew the tune, she would sing softly in her sweet high voice, and I would again marvel at her talent. The three boys played a game where you had to come up with a word that started with the last letter of the word they gave. Of course, I couldn't spell, so

I was left out. I didn't mind in the least. I was too caught up in the familiar night sounds around me. I could hear a cricket. Was it the same cricket we heard during the day? Mother said they brought good luck. As the night blackened around us, I could see the red smouldering tobacco brighten in the bowl of Father's pipe when he drew on it. Not enough to give us light, but enough to tell me that Father was content ... resting after long hours in the fields that day in the blistering sun. I could feel my eyes becoming heavy. I leaned my head against Audrey's shoulder. The night sounds around me couldn't keep me from nodding off. I knew I would waken in the morning in bed, laying on top of the feather mattress in my flourbag underwear, not sure how I got there. But in those moments of darkness, I would again marvel at how rich my family was, while everyone was talking about something called the Depression, which to me was happening in some other land. CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED IN MAY Continued from page 13

Almonte General Hospital (AGH) moved to purchase the new equipment because both the ultrasound machine and the X-ray equipment were more than 10 years old. Finding replacement parts was becoming increasingly difficult when the equipment needed servicing. With only one ultrasound, wait times were also too long. The new digital machines are faster and easier to use, which has helped reduce wait times down to a few weeks, as opposed to months. The new X-ray machines also emit far less radiation, and according to the chief of staff, Dr. Chris Deschenes, offer better image quality, which can lead to better diagnostic accuracy. In 2017, X-ray staff at the hospital conducted 6,696 examinations and ultrasound staff conducted 4,266 examinations. The new portable X-ray machine was used 140 times. Currently, AGH patients requiring a CT scan are transported to another hospital. For more information about the Put Yourself in the Picture campaign, which runs until the end of March 2020, contact the Almonte General HospitalFairview Manor Foundation at 613-256-2500 (ext. 2297) or visit www.almontehospitalfoundation.com. The Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Region (MRSPR) is seeking source protection committee members who are interested in protecting municipal drinking water sources in the Mississippi and Rideau Valley watersheds. The MRSPR committee was established in 2007 as a result of the province's Clean Water Act. The committee guides local efforts to protect drinking water at the source and is

made up of one-third municipal, one-third economic and one-third public sector representatives. The composition ensures that a variety of local interests are represented at the decision-making table as the committee works to oversee the implementation of science-based source protection plans. The committee is currently undergoing a renewal to ensure that it remains in compliance with Ontario Regulation 288/

07, the regulation that governs source protection committees under Ontario's Clean Water Act. The committee is looking for two economic sector representatives to liaise on behalf of industrial, commercial or small business interests as well as two public sector representatives to liaise on behalf of general public, environmental, First Nations and non-governmental organization interests. COMMUNITY

EVENT REVIVED FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1980 Continued from page 23

event that hasn't been held for almost 40 years must have been a "huge, huge job." "We thank Vicki (Barr McDougall) for getting this organized this year." "It's a start," said Harris. "It's a really good idea. People like to come back to see people and things they haven't seen in a while." She suggested that if it is to return next year it be publicized well in advance so people are able to plan their family vacations around it. Peggy Byrne, one of six main organizers of the event, said the group will do a post mortem to decide whether it will be an annual event and if it will stay at four days or be limited to a weekend. While Thursday's Christmas in July Parade of Lights was cancelled and the turnout for the Riley New concert was disappointing, Byrne was pleased with the turnout of

about 300 Friday for the Brandy'n Port dance. And about 500 showed up for the firefighter's breakfast Saturday at the fire hall. Byrne also expected a large turnout for the Saturday and Sunday entertainment, noting that the local bands scheduled tend to attract large crowds. Jamie McMunn and Mike Ryan, who kicked off the 12 hours of entertainment Saturday, expressed surprise such a small group had organized such a major event. "Hats off to them," said McMunn, who knows a thing about event planning as he is one of the organizers of the Goodwood County Music Festival at Beckwith Park Aug. 3 to 5. "I think this (Old Home Weekend) is great," said Ryan. "It gives people a reason to come back to the Ottawa Valley." He said there should be more events that encourage folks to "relax, throw away their cell phones, talk

to their neighbours, laugh and have a good old time." The three O'Brien siblings agreed, noting they will all be attending the Appleton school reunion this Saturday, Aug 4. The event, which includes a barbecue lunch, music, bus tours and much reminiscing, will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the North Lanark Regional Museum. Byrne praised the participation in the Almonte Old Home Weekend of the teams in the ball tournament, the firefighters for their breakfast, those in the car show, the many entertainers and the Almonte branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Ontario Legion Command chairman Ron Goebel of Carleton Place said the legion would like to tie in the provincial washer toss championship with the Almonte Old Home Weekend again next year. "It worked exceptionally well," he said, noting the visiting competitors were

MISSISSIPPI MILLS

YARD OF THE WEEK

John Carter/Metroland Zoe Higginson of Almonte is dwarfed by one of several bouncy castles set up for Mississippi Mills Family Fun Day July 28 in Gemmill Park.

The blaze of colour in the front yard at 334 Wylie Street is a testimony to the gardening skills of the owner Marion Armstrong . An underground drip hose in the main flower bed was quite an asset this year. Perennials that butterflies like such as echinacea , phlox and lilies are prominent in the front yard. A clematis and metal dragonflies on the front of the house add interest. Hanging baskets add colour to the trees framing the house and a metal sculpture is featured in the garden.

(nee Tysick) 1929-2018 It is with great sadness that the Foy family announces the passing of their matriarch on 16 July 2018 in Ottawa. Shirley was born in Westport, the youngest and last surviving child of Ida Mae Stafford and Robert William Tysick. She was pre-deceased by her devoted husband Charles James Foy in 2016. They were married nearly 66 years and together raised six children: Lydia (Bernard), Jane, William (Cathy), Michael, Robert (Rosanne) and James (Linda). Her greatest joy was her adored grandchildren Maisie and Ava. Also left to mourn her passing are her many Tysick nieces, nephews to whom she was very devoted and whose company she so enjoyed. Shirley was an amazing woman, strong, fierce and full of spark. She was a born warrior who had a streak of mischief and a ready twinkle in her eye. Her last day was spent at the family cottage on Christie Lake that she loved so much, listening to her birds and taking a dip in the lake. That was her heaven. Memorial to be announced.

DEVITT, Robert (Bob) - In loving memory of a dear father and grandfather who passed away July 31, 2006. Time speed on, 12 years have passed, Since death its gloom, its shadow cast. Within our home where all seemed bright, And took from us a shining light. We miss that light and ever will, His vacant place there is none can fill. Down here we mourn, but not in vain, For up in Heaven we will meet again. Always in our thoughts and sadly missed, Loving daughter Crystal, John, Meredith and Bailey

PHILLIPS, Beverly Rose (Dixon) In loving memory of my special sister who passed away August 2, 2016. When I lost you! I wish I could see you one more time, Come walking through the door. But I know that is impossible, I will hear your voice no more. I know you can feel my tears, And you don’t want me to cry, Yet my heart is broken because I cant understand why someone So precious had to die. I pray that God will give me strength… And somehow get me through, As I struggle with the heartache, That came When I Lost You. Still missed and Loved more each day. Barb

George Bernard Shaw's legendary play about the gradual reveal of a family secret, the men who dance around its uncomfortable truths, and an epic motherdaughter showdown has sparked a good deal of introspection and discussion during the ongoing staging of Mrs. Warren's Profession at the Classic Theatre Festival in Perth. The show, which runs until Aug. 12 at 54 Beckwith St. E. (at Harvey), is set in the Victorian era, a time when women had no right to vote or own property, and their status was described by John Stuart Mill as akin to slavery. It is against this backdrop that characters who have made certain choices for survival are challenged to justify their positions. As the show progresses, festival audiences have found

themselves debating during intermission and after the final curtain exactly what they think about Mrs. Warren, her daughter Vivie, and the men who are part of their world. It's exactly as Shaw would have liked it, given his penchant for a good debate and his interest in seeing changes to the vast social inequality that marked his age. Modern audiences arriving in Perth from as far away as Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto, as well as U.S. destinations, are engaging with the play not only as an entertainment it is certainly a compelling show that mixes drama and comedy - but also as a mirror held up to 2018, when sexual inequality still exists both in Canada and around the globe. And while there certainly have been improvements

since the Victoria era, in Canada, the average amount earned by full-time working women in Canada for every dollar earned by men is 74 cents. Based on a wage gap of 31.5 per cent in Ontario, it currently takes women an additional 14 years to earn the same pay collected by men by age 65. The Canadian Women's Foundation notes that 80 per cent of all lone-parent families are headed by women, while women who leave an abusive partner to raise children on their own are more than five times likely to live in poverty. Mrs. Warren's Profession plays Tuesday to Sunday at 2 p.m., with 8 p.m. shows every Wednesday and Saturday. For tickets, visit classictheatre.ca. Submitted by the Classic Theatre Festival

RENOVATIONS AT LAWS SHELTER EXPECTED TO START IN SEPTEMBER The countdown is on to start our much needed renovation for our shelter. The planned start is early September. We've raised just under $75,000 so far and are hoping to reach our goal of $125,000 soon. If you'd like to add to that to help us reach our goal, we accept Visa, credit, debit or cash at the shelter. You may also send an e-transfer to shelter@lanarkanimals.ca and send the security answer in a separate email to the same address. Tax receipts are available. This week's featured pets

sey and Kora, who will make the right person wonderful companions. They are close to "celebrating" their one-year anniversary at LAWS. They've adjusted very well to their shelter life and Kasey is now rolling over for belly rubs. Kora is no longer hiding and shows curiosity at times but can still be startled by sudden moves. She's always seeking protection from her brother Kasey. They are looking for stability and when you first get them home, they will require a sanctuary room with all of their necessities including food, toys, scratching post, litter box

Kasey and Kora Calling for help for Ka-

and hiding area. Have this room prepared before they come home. Take it slow and please have some patience with them. We're confident that Kasey and Kora, with time and with the right owner, will show you what delightful, sweet, affectionate cats they can be to have around. It's time for them to move on. The adoption fee for both cats is reduced to $200 total. They are available at LAWS.

Sandy Looking for a lovely buff/white friendly boy to complete your life? Then look no further. Sandy could be your man. He's pa-

tiently waiting for his furever home. At this, time he should be your one and only cat-love as he's not too keen on his roommates at the shelter. Sandy is available at LAWS and he is about 11 months old. Angel

Angel Angel is a sweetheart with a tabby face and a body covered with interesting markings. She is trying very hard to be the first one you'll notice when you come to adopt a cat. She loves to snuggle up in your arms and will purr loudly from pure excitement. Please meet her at LAWS, she's very ready to pack her bags.

MARK HASKINS REVIEWS THE SEQUEL TO 'THE EQUALIZER' MARK HASKINS Column

In a film like The Equalizer 2 there was never any doubt as to how it would end. Especially with Denzel Washington playing Robert McCall. Of course the joy in a

film like this isn't the ending, but how we get there. Robert (Denzel Washington) has gone back to living a quiet life. He does his best to go unnoticed while he drives his Lyft, and helping those that can't find help anywhere else. He works at keeping the past in the past, but sometimes the past has a way of coming back to haunt you. In Brussels a CIA asset, and his wife are murdered. It's been staged to look like a murder suicide, but when Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo) goes to investigate things don't look right. Later

ABOUT THE MOVIE

Movie The Equalizer 2 Starring Denzel Washington, Ashton Sanders, Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman and Pedro Pascal. Directed by Antoine Fuqua Rated 14A

at her hotel she's attacked and killed in what appears to be a robbery. When Robert learns about Susan's death he immediately suspects foul play. It doesn't take long for

Robert to start to put the pieces together making himself a target. Susan was his friend. Maybe his only friend. So Robert will stop at nothing to find those responsible and make them pay. I love how Antoine Fuqua tells a story. He crafts it. He lets it unfold naturally. He takes his time allowing us to reconnect with who and what this character is. We see Robert helping an elderly Holocaust survivor trying to reclaim some of the past stolen from him. We see him trying to give direction to Miles (Ashton Sanders), and keep him out of a gang. All

the while there's a storm building in the background. The storm is both literal and metaphorical. As the film progress we hear reports of a hurricane building off the coast. With the coming of the storm there's this dark and oppressive atmosphere pervading the film. It mirrors Robert perfectly. Like the storm Robert is implacable, unstoppable and inevitable. The energy grows, and the pressure builds until its finally released with devastating effect. It creates a mesmerizing film. Ashton Sanders, Melissa

Leo, Bill Pullman and Pedro Pascal are great. The whole cast is excellent, but it's hard to take your eyes off Denzel Washington. There's something about the way he inhabits a role. He becomes Robert McColl body and soul. He's so natural in portraying McColl's mannerism, his idiosyncrasies, and his deadly skill. When you watch Washington you watch a master craftsman at the height of his skill. Mark Haskins has been reviewing movies for over a decade. His column is a regular feature.

sudoku

Carleton Place/Almonte Canadian Gazette | Thursday, August 2, 2018 |

38

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
