Judd Folske will be entering his fifth year as Alma College Head Baseball Coach in the 2011-2012 season after spending two years as an assistant coach with the program. Coach Folske joined the Maroon and Cream in the fall of 2005 after stops at NCAA Division I Central Michigan University, and stints at Div. Alma College Baseball 2012 Season Outlook

Overview

Outfield

In 2012, the Scots’ baseball team hopes to improve on their 2011 14-14 league record. With a large incoming class of 16 freshmen, the Scots are confident that they can achieve improvement. “We have to get better than last year,” said Alma head coach Judd Folske. “We didn’t get consistency out of our hitters and left a lot of men on base. We have a lot of unknowns, which will be exciting. This young group, the new men, are athletes and we have to get them some at bats.” Having just completed a short pre season, the team headed to Mrytle Beach for Spring Training. In Myrtle Beach, the team will compete in four varsity and eight JV games. During this training, the Scots hope to establish starters and depth. “We have to find out who can swing it and who’s going to struggle,” said Folske. “When you look at offense and defense, it is about who is going to make the plays.” The Scots are looking to the 2012 season with high hopes for pitching and defense.

The Scots are confident in the outfield as they start the season with a lot of depth. Starters will include Sr. Adam Jock (Wales, Mich./Memphis) in right field, Sr. Ian Rhynard (Shephard, Mich./Shephard) in center, and So. Bryn Ludlow (Attica, Mich./Lapeer East) in left. Fr. Blake Leddy (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley), potentially a good hitter, will also play right field. A couple players, Jr. Mitch Wilson (Rudyard, Mich./Rudyard) and Jr. Alex Ruhlman (Algonac, Mich./Algonac), traditionally pitchers, will also see time in the outfield. “In the outfield, we’re good,” said Folske. “With Ian and Ludlow, who can go get the ball defensively, we have good speed out there. They also have a good jump and can anticipate well, which should help our pitchers.”

Pitching This year, the Scots will find strength in their pitchers. The starting pitching staff brings three returning seniors, including Sr. Richard Schreiber (Grayling, Mich./Grayling), Sr. Anthony Derrer (Mancelona, Mich./Mancelona), and Sr. Donny Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant). A fourth starter includes So. Kevin Thompson (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) and some freshmen will have to step up. “I really like our starters,” said Folske. “This pitching group, even though there are three seniors, has not seen a lot of innings, but they’re good. We’ve also got some quality freshmen that can get people out. None of them are power pitchers but they’ve got a good mix of a breaking ball, change up, and every once in a while sneak a fast one in.” Infield The middle infield will also provide strength and experience for the Scots this year. Lee, along with pitching, will be at third base. The returning third baseman, Lee earn 2nd Team All-MIAA honors in 2011 and finished the league with a batting average of .373, a total of three doubles and 16 runs batted in. Three seniors will be at the catcher position with Sr. Matt Stephens (Maple Rapids, Mich./Fulton), Schreiber, and Sr. Troy Weber (Beulah, Mich./Benzie Central). “We have 16 new players so half our squad is new and we have eight seniors,” said Folske. “Strength will be in our middle, it’s a veteran group and the JV games will tell us where we’re at with the younger people.”

During his tenure, his teams won seven MIAA Championships and played in the 1980 and 1981 NCAA Division III Regional Tournaments. He served as baseball coach, assistant football coach and men’s and women’s head basketball coach and won 13 league championships leading those teams. One of a very few MIAA coaches to win championships in two sports in one year, he is the only league coach to win championships in both men’s and women’s basketball. Inducted into the Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete in xxxx, he remains one of the finest coaches in the history of Alma College Athletics. Charles Skinner 1963-69; 1954-57; 1947-49 After the 1928 season, Alma College discontinued the sport of baseball and from 1930-47, baseball championships were not sponsored by the MIAA. The resurgence of baseball on Alma’s campus is attributed to two men. One was Charlie Skinner, a student from Phelps, N.Y., who spearheaded a campus campaign to arouse student interest and support for baseball in 1938. John Wirt Dunning was the other who was a catcher for Alma in the 1900s and was named president of the College in the summer of 1938. Due to World War II, baseball was again halted from 1942-46 and when baseball was resumed in 1947, Skinner was again involved as coach of the team which went 7-9 that season. Skinner compiled the longest string of MIAA championships from 1951-58 when Skinner coached four of those teams that dominated the decade. - Inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Coach. - Was the Alma College baseball coach for many years, including three different stints leading the program. - Lead team to eight consecutive MIAA championships during the 1950’s. - Member of the Chemistry Department faculty at the College. - Taught at Marlette Township and Alma Public Schools. - Employed by Dow Chemical Company of Midland. - Selected in 1972, 1974, and 1976 by the students as the Distinguished Professor in the Natural Science Division. - His family honored him by erecting the Skinner Hall of Fame building at Klenk Park, in 2003. Bill Carr 1958-62 Coached the 1958 team, winning an MIAA Championship that season. Fred Lawrence 1952-53 Coached the Scots from 1952-53, winning championships in both seasons. Bruce Butler 1950-51 Coached the Scots in 1951 when they won the first of eight consecutive MIAA Championships. Jesse Harper The coach of Alma’s first championship baseball team in 1907 was Jesse Harper. He later coached Knute Rockne in football at Notre Dame. Harper served as head football coach at the University of Notre Dame from 1913-17. Harper attended the University of Chicago and played football under the immortal Amos Alonzo Stagg from 1902-06. He acquired his first coaching position the following season at Alma where he accumulated a 10-4-4 record from 1906-08 on the gridiron. In 1909 he moved to Wabash College in Indiana where he coached until 1913, leaving with a 15-9-2 record. In 1913 he became head coach and athletic director at Notre Dame, guiding the Irish to an undefeated season that first year. He resigned at the age of 33 in 1917 to live on his 20,000-acre ranch in Sitka, Kansas. His five year record at Notre Dame stood at 34-5-1. He was elected to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1971.
