Alma College Women’s Soccer Head Coach jeff Hosler Jeff Hosler ‘02, joined the Alma College Athletics staff as the Scots women’s soccer coach in 2006 and has helped the Maroon and Cream grow into one of the most talented teams in the MIAA. He is now coach of the reigning MIAA Women’s Soccer Champions. After reaching the league championship for the first time in school history in 2008, the Scots won their first-ever MIAA Championship in 2010, with an undefeated 7-0-1 league record. Alma defeated Adrian College, 2-0, in the Semi-Finals of the league tournament, but lost the Championship, 3-1, to Calvin College at Scotland Yard. “We now have expectations for all Alma teams moving forward. If there is anything positive to take out of not being selected for the NCAA tournament, it is that the returning players know how close we were. But, we did things that no other Alma team has done, and the girls should be very proud of that fact.” Besides winning the school’s first MIAA Championship in the 21-year history of women’s soccer, the Scots also notched their most wins ever, as they ended the campaign with a mark of 14-5-1. Hosler, a 2002 graduate of Alma College and a standout on the soccer pitch for the Scots, has built a program that is now recognized as one of the best in the MIAA. During his tenure, Hosler also has created the Reserve program, which allows even more players the ability to experience Alma Soccer. The Scots have been awarded the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award in each of Hosler’s five seasons at the school. The Scots were the only team in the MIAA to earn the honor for the 2008-09 academic year. During his playing career at Alma, Hosler became one of the best players in the 30 years of Scots soccer. He remains the all-time assists leader and ranks in the top ten in career goals and in the top five in career points. He helped the Scots to their second MIAA title, first-ever NCAA Regional Championship and first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance in 1999 en route to first team All-MIAA and third team All-Mideast Region honors. He would go on to earn first team All-MIAA accolades again in 2001 and was named to the conference’s second team in 2000. Before returning to his alma mater, Hosler spent four years coaching at both the high school and club levels as well as working as a retail manager at Back of the Net Sports in Lansing. He has served as the head coach of East Lansing High School’s freshmen boys and girls soccer teams and worked as a varsity assistant with the soccer and boys basketball programs. At East Lansing he assisted in four conference championships, three state semi-final appearances and the 2005 boys soccer state championship. Additionally, he has coached at the premiere club level since 2002 with CA United, Michigan Rush and TNT Dynamite. Above his coaching responsibilities, he has also served as Club Technical Director, Youth Academy Consultant and Residential Camp Director. Hosler founded the Alma College Residential and High School Skills Clinic and serves as its Director. His vast camp experience includes work as a coach at most Michigan college campuses over the last decade. He currently holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National “C” License as well as the USYSA National Youth license. He also works for the USYSA as an evaluator in Michigan’s Olympic Development program.

2011 Alma College Women’s Soccer Season Preview 2011 OVERVIEW: The goal for the 2011 team is very clear for the players and the coaches. The team has made it a priority to repeat as MIAA champs and then earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament and win games when they get there. “Our goals are clear that we want to be in the NCAA Tournament,” said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. “To achieve that goal, the number one thing we need is to have great team chemistry. In camp, the girls have been working hard for each other and for the betterment of the team. We have the ability to be very deep which will allow us to play many different players, and team chemistry has to be there to allow that to happen.” 2011 OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK: Offensively, the Scots are experienced and poised to have some very positive results. Sr. Carly Reising (Ostego, Mich./ Ostego), a 2010 All-Region player, returns to lead the Scots attack and is poised to have a big final campaign after having a successful summer playing semi-pro soccer. Other players expected to lead the Scots include So. Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy), the team’s leading scorer in 2010, Sr. Maria Castaneda (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), Sr. Becky Marton (Williamston, Mich./ Williamston), and Jr. Elaine Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central). In addition, Fr. Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) has impressed in camp and could make an impact this season.

Alma has to replace four-year middle back starter Morgan Rudd, but So. Ann Kennedy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) has worked very hard in fall camp and is poised to take the position over for the Scots. Flanking Kennedy to create a formidable defensive backfield are Jr. Brittany Dulyea (East Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and fifth-year Sr. Brooke Bergeron (Holly, Mich./Fenton). “Our defense starts with Monica, who is the centerpiece,” said Hosler. “We have some very good returning players on the defensive side and we also possess some solid depth at the positions as well. We believe that we have the opportunity to have the best defensive unit since I have been here.” 2011 SEASON SCHEDULE: After this weekend’s games in Chicago, the Scot will play Carroll and Kenyon College (Ohio) next weekend at home before embarking on the MIAA double round robin schedule. “This preseason is really unique for us as it really limits our non conference competition,” said Hosler. “We have always prided ourselves on playing top teams, but I do believe that our four non-league opponents are very solid. As for the MIAA, we think there is some really good talent at the tolp of the league and again, Calvin sets the bar. It should be fun.”

“I am really happy with the work ethic of the returning kids on the offensive side,” said Hosler. “Taryn has worked hard on her weaknesses and Elaine and Becky have shown they are ready to step up and lead. This is an aggressive group and we are looking for big things from them.” 2011 DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK: On the other side of the pitch, it all starts with All-MIAA league Sr. goalkeeper Monica Witt (Clio, Mich./Clio). She give the Scots a chance to win every contest on the schedule, but she has plenty of talent and help in front of her.
