STANFORD’S DONNOVAN YISRAEL HELPS YOUNG PEOPLE BUILD A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR LOVE, SEX AND RELATIONSHIPS by Karla Kane

B

ad boys and bad girls, Prince Charmings and Cinderellas — cultural and media representations of love, romance and living “happily ever after” can ruin a relationship, according to Donnovan Yisrael, who manages Stanford University’s relationship and sexual health programs. Since he began his work in the 1990s, he said, people have only become more consistently saturated by unhealthy media portrayals of sex and relationships. For more than a decade, he has helped Stanford students grapple with relationship issues. The lessons they learn during his twice-weekly talks could make the difference between a happy longterm relationships and a lifetime of disasters. Mr. Yisrael calls his field the “intersection of health and culture.” He’s interested in helping

people understand how social and cultural pressures can lead to unrealistic relationship expectations and risky behaviors. A Stanford alumnus, Mr. Yisrael has degrees in psychology and sociology. A former AIDSprevention worker for high school students in San Mateo County, he hopes that by talking with students about issues and patterns early, fewer will engage in risky or damaging behavior during their college careers and beyond. During his casual evening talks, he gains student attention with titles such as “Studs, sluts, virgins and wimps,” “Why I want what I can’t have,” and, most recently, “Top 10 frustrating ‘games’ in romantic relationships.” Cultural ideals and media portrayals of relationships, be it from movies and teen books such as the “Twilight” series or classic “princess” fairytales, can have a harmful effect, perpetuating such stereotypes as the aforementioned “studs and sluts” and reinforcing dangerous gender norms of how masculinity and femininity should be expressed, he said. “The more you buy into traditional gender roles the less likely you will be sexually safe and healthy,” he said. It’s not just “Sex and the City” and old fairytales, either, he added. “Cultural scripts are linked to unhealthy behavior,” even in subtle ways, he said. Mr. Yisrael addresses issues such as the “bad boy/bad girl” in his “Top 10 frustrating games” talk. Those roles are exemplified by celebrities such as Charlie Sheen or Lindsay Lohan, who glamorize risky behavior such as drugs, drunken driving, infidelity, and trouble with the law, he said. “’Bad boys’ or ‘wild girls’ are seen as these intriguing, attractive, dark figures” whom admirers think they can “tame.” That impossible task generally leads

2 9

to heartbreak, he said. He also tackles the idea of being “cool” — playing hard to get, acting uncaring or uninterested, and not worrying about health risks. “Why would you want to date someone who doesn’t care?” he asks his audience. Part of why people have unrealistic expectations of their partners has to do with the concept of love, he said. “In America we only have one word for love. It’s problematic. There should be and is a difference between being in love and real love,” he said, pointing out that studies have shown brains under the influence of being “in love” or infatuated look similar to those under the influence of cocaine. For real relationship success, he said, couples must have a strong partnership in day-to-day life, even after the initial feelings of butterflies in the stomach, overwhelming attraction and “sparks” have faded. “Real love is a behavior, not a feeling,” he said. Basing a successful long-term relationship on the swoony feelings of new romance would be like “starting a business with someone because they have nice teeth,” he said. In addition to his talks, Mr. Yisrael meets with individual students but emphasizes that he is not a therapist. “Sometimes students just really need someone to talk to, to ask what is normal or express concerns, and I can be that person. I also serve as a bridge to therapy referral,” he said. He also works with student groups to raise awareness for relationship issues. For the month of January (called “Manuary”), he and members of the student group Men Against Abuse Now grew moustaches to raise awareness about relationship violence. His message may not kick in until after graduation. He hopes the talks will plant a seed of awareness to challenge relationship stereotypes and make healthy choices, he said. “I want to help them with critical thinking about nuance and body image, and with getting them to understand how culture is inside us, on an intellectual, psychological and emotional level,” he said. (Almanac Feb. 3, 2010) Notification of Public Participation Hearings Application No. 09-07-001 for a General Rate Increase California Water Service Company On July 2, 2009, California Water Service Company (Cal Water) filed Application 09-07-001 requesting rate increases in each of its service areas totaling $70,592,000, or 16.75%, in January 2011; $24,777,000, or 5.04%, in January 2012; and $24,777,000, or 4.79%, in January 2013. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will hold Public Participation Hearings (PPH) on the above application filing in the following five locations: Lancaster: Thursday, February 4, 2010, 7 p.m., Lancaster High School (Cafeteria), 44701 32nd St. West, Lancaster, CA 93536 Salinas: Thursday, February 11, 2010, 7 p.m., Salinas Community Center (Gabilan Room), 940 North Main St., Salinas, CA 93906 Kernville: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 7 p.m., Kernville Chamber of Commerce (Community Center Room), 11447 Kernville Road, Kernville, CA 93238 Guerneville: Thursday, February 25, 2010, 7 p.m., Guerneville Veterans Memorial Building (Auditorium), First & Church Streets, Guerneville, CA 95446 Lucerne: Thursday, March 4, 2010, 7 p.m., Lucerne Alpine Senior Center (Banes Hall Room), 10th and Country Club Drive, Lucerne, CA 95458 The purpose of the hearings is to allow cus-

tomers of Cal Water to present their views and comments on the proposed increases and any other aspect of the Company's operations. Cal Water's Proposal Under Cal Water's proposal, rates for each year would become effective on January 1, beginning in 2011. Rate increases for 2012 and 2013 are calculated using inflation factors provided by the CPUC. The factors used to calculate rates in these years will be the most recent inflation at that time. In accordance with the CPUC's rate case plan, Cal Water has requested approval from the CPUC to increase its rates for 2012 and 2013 by actual inflation without further notice to customers. This means that if inflation is greater than assumed here, rates for years 2012 and 2013 may be higher than shown in this notice. CPUC Process The CPUC's Division of Ratepayer Advocates (DRA) will review the application and submit its independent analysis and recommendations in written reports for the CPUC's consideration. Once completed, the reports are available to the public upon request or by downloading from DRA's web site. DRA consists of engineers, auditors, and other professional staff who represent the long-term interest of all utility ratepayers. Evidentiary hearings are scheduled to be held in April, whereby parties of record will present their testimony and will be subject to cross-examination before the assigned Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). These evidentiary hearings are open to the public to attend and listen, but only parties of record participate in the actual evidentiary hearing. Parties at these hearings may offer proposals to the CPUC that differ from those proposed by Cal Water. After considering all proposals and evidence presented during these formal hearings, the ALJ will issue a draft proposed decision. In its final decision on this application, the CPUC may adopt all or part of the ALJ's proposed decision. Public Advisor's Office and Public Comment If you would like to protest this filing or

present your comments on the proposed application filing, you may do so by contacting the CPUC's Public Advisor's Office at: CPUC, Public Advisor's Office, 505 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102, or by e-mail to public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov. You may also call (866) 849-8390 (toll free) or (415) 703-2074. If you are unable to attend the PPH, you may submit written comments to the Public Advisor at the address listed above. Please reference the application (A.09-07-001) when writing to the CPUC. All comments received are circulated to the assigned Commissioner and ALJ in this proceeding for review and also serve as formal comments. If you are attending the hearing and need specialized accommodations, please contact the CPUC's Public Advisor's Office at the phone number above at least 3-5 working days prior to the hearing. A copy of Cal Water's application and further information may be obtained from your local Cal Water office.
