office and hired their college friend, Jason De Los Santos, to join them. The three of them spent several years fitting shoes for patients with diabetes. They began selling other products and realized they were going to need to get a bigger Continued on Page 3

Who is ASM? Continued from page 1 space. In 2007, they made the decision to move to Asheville, North Carolina because it was a beautiful place to raise their now growing families. Since then, they moved into a 22,000

square foot facility and have over 80 full time employees. Marcus, Carolyn and Jason are still very much involved in the day-to-day running of the business with Jason as the current President.

“I feel very grateful to have been on this path to where we are now,” says Jason. “Helping people with diabetes live more comfortably and helping our local economy by providing jobs so others can live in this beautiful place is very fulfilling.” Winning the national competitive bid for mail order diabetic supplies has been a welcomed challenge for these young entrepreneurs, but they plan to be around for many years to come.

Phone Calls Prior to Your Shipment We are simplifying our phone communications with automated phone calls to our patients for re-supply approvals. Insurance requires us to get your verbal approval prior to sending out your next shipment of diabetic testing supplies.

Therefore, we are implementing an automated system that will call you and then ask you a few questions over the phone prior to sending your shipment. Once you’ve approved the next shipment via telephone, then we will send your supplies

out as usual. We believe this system will be easier for everyone and will ensure that you continue to get your supplies as you need them.

Confidentiality Because we deal with patient medical records, confidentiality is a top priority. There are also privacy standards from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (also called HIPAA). This means that when we are leaving a phone message, we don’t say things like

“testing supplies,” but rather just “supplies.” We don’t know who will hear the message and we want to be sure to keep your medical information private. We also don’t share your health information with a family member or caregiver unless we have your consent.

You can either give verbal consent for a one call authorization or fill out an authorization form that we will keep on file to allow specific people to talk about your account at any time. You can download the form on our website under “resources” on the FAQ tab or call us to mail you one.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation In October, All-States Medical employees will do a 5k walk to raise money for diabetic research. As of Mid-September, we have raised over $4070 and counting for the foundation.

Not only are we raising money, but we are getting fit in the process. We’ve been doing weekly training walks to get everyone moving and ready to walk 3 miles on October 6th!

Our staff speaks daily to people with diabetes and we understand the struggles that come with the disease. We hope that this small gesture of supporting this cause will help find a cure.

Honors and Awards

Asheville 40 Under 40 Award The President of AllStates Medical Supply, Jason De Los Santos, was chosen as one of the top 40 business leaders under the age of 40 in Asheville, North Carolina.

He was recognized for the successful growth of the company, his contributions to the local community and for running a “green” business by using solar panels. Congratulations Jason!

Quarterly Employee Award Marde P. was nominated by the staff for her hard work and dedication to win our Quarterly Employee Award. Marde works in our shipping department and handles our building maintenance. She is always smiling and knows that by helping keep our workspace comfortable, she is helping us to help our patients. A big thank you and congratulations to Marde!

Relief for Common Toe Conditions Proper footwear and daily foot care is very important for many people, especially for those with diabetes. Many over-the-counter shoes do not provide enough room for common foot conditions such as bunions and hammertoes. Bunions are a common deformity of the joint of the big toe and can form from long-term use of tight fitting pointed toe shoes or could be an inherited condition passed down genetically. Hammertoe is a condition where the toe grows in a bent position and could also affect the toes on either side. This can be caused by footwear that forces the toe in the same position for long periods of time causing the muscles to shorten.

and available in many shapes and sizes.

Shoes that are not designed to allow room for your toes can also cause other problems including calluses and blisters that can lead to sores, infection or even worse in the diabetic foot. Our therapeutic shoes give you the room you need and the comfort you deserve. All-States Medical Supply carries several brands of men’s and women’s therapeutic footwear that are both stylish and comfortable

If you have Medicare and suffer from diabetes, you may qualify for one pair of therapeutic footwear and three pairs of inserts every year. Medicare requires a signed doctor’s order to ensure coverage. Call us today to see if you qualify. You also have an option to buy a pair (or more) out of pocket. Starting at $59.99 you can find the right pair to fit your budget and lifestyle. Call our staff pedorthist to get yours ordered today at toll free: 1-855-3623344 Extension 2225

Because Laughter is good for your health! The local news station was interviewing an 80 year old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80 and then about her new husband's occupation. "He's a funeral director," she answered. He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her early 20s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40s, and a preacher when in her 60s, and now in her 80s, a funeral director. Astonished, the interviewer looked at her and asked, "Why did you marry four men with such diverse backgrounds?" She smiled and explained, "I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go."
