Twelve Disciples Luke 5 & 6 Jesus knew that he had much work to do. He wanted to have some good friends who could help him. One day Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee when he saw two boats in the water.

Peter and Andrew were fishing from one boat.

James and John were mending a net in the other boat.

Jesus called to them, “Come and follow me.� All four went with Jesus.

Matthew was sitting at his table, counting his money. He was a tax-man.

“Pay up! Pay up!” he said. “The King wants his tax.”

All the nice people thought Matthew was bad. He helped the King and he helped himself! They would not be friends with him.

But Jesus wanted Matthew to be one of his special friends.

“Come with me,” he said. Matthew left his money and came.

Matthew gave a party for Jesus at his house. All the nice people grumbled.

“Jesus is good. How can he be friends with bad people?” they asked.

Jesus said, “They need me. I’ve come to help the people who need me, not those who think they are good already.”

Jesus now had five special friends: Peter and Andrew, James and John, and Matthew.

But that still wasn’t enough. He talked to God about it- then he chose seven more: Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, another man named James, Simon, Judas and Judas Iscariot.

Jesus and his disciples went to all the towns and villages, telling everyone God’s good news.

There were twelve men altogether. Jesus’ friends, the disciples.
