US gymnast soldiers on with broken toe

American gold medal contender McKayla Maroney revealed on Thursday that she is suffering from a broken toe, but said it will not affect her chances of success at the London Olympics. The 16-year-old, who took gold on the vault at last year’s world championships in Tokyo, said she suffered the injury before the Secret US Classic in May and aggravated it during training in London. Maroney has only taken part in light training in her final Olympic build-up but she said she was happy to have completed a series of vaults during Thursday’s podium training at the North Greenwich Arena. “Today I did my vault and that’s the most important thing for me,” she said. “I have a broken toe but it’s OK. The most important thing today was for me to go out there and hit my vault, and I did that so I was really happy with how things went. “I compete with tape on.
