How did you overcome these hurdles? People! I found people to help. I sat down one of my closest friends (and dietitians - Michelle Holt) and asked if she would join me in running Diet Solutions. We both had young children and shared the same vision - we wanted to build a dietetic private practice with expert dietitians that would provide insightful advice for a variety of conditions using the latest research advances. We both were committed to it, but were realistic about our goals and time lines. We both only wanted to work part time and were happy to grow the business slowly.

such a fun and spirited person to have by my side. Moving to our new premises in Glen Iris was also pretty exciting. We had a custom fit out completed and it is a really peaceful location.

What keeps you motivated to continue doing what you do? The people we work with. We have such an amazing team. I love knowing that we have built a company that is providing them with a great job that they love. I also particularly enjoy how involved many of the team are in

“I love knowing that we have built a company that is providing them with a great job that they love.” Michelle and I were lucky enough to find a business advisor, Peter, who needed dietary advice. We traded dietary advice for business advice and will forever be grateful for all that we learnt from him. He taught us how to understand our business.

In terms of Marketing the business, did you have a plan in place? Was it a take it as it comes approach? We didn’t have a formal marketing plan, but we prepared a database of referring doctors and expanded this with new referring doctors to target. We conducted mail outs - which never had much impact - and generally found the best way to make an impact was to meet with people face-to-face.

How has Diet Solutions changed since the beginning? We have grown to a team of 6 dietitians and 4 administration staff. Our head office has moved to a beautiful space in Glen Iris surrounded by cafes and parklands. The biggest change is the fact that we consult from ten locations around Melbourne. This has been due to demand for our services in other areas of Melbourne. Michelle and I are also now working more hours as our children are growing up, so we have more contact with our staff. We are feeling really good about where the business is at now.

What are some of the most memorable moments of starting and running Diet Solutions? The amazing people we have worked with. I really miss the ones that have moved on. We’ve become a pretty tight family, have a lot of laughs at the office and make sure we have regular meetings with and without wine!

nutrition research, we are on top of what is going on with new advances and it is exciting to bring this to our patients and see new strategies improve health.

What milestones or goals do you have in mind for the future of Diet Solutions? We want to continue our goal in providing exceptional dietetic care to patients using the latest nutrition advances. Michelle and I have a major focus on our employee’s happiness. We want to provide a platform where our dietetic staff feel they are supported by a team, have access to great professional development opportunities and come together socially to encourage the friendships that we have formed. As many people work independently in private practice, I feel this is a really special part of our business.

If you were to give three helpful tips to someone wanting to build their client base, what would they be? Find and sell your point of difference. Build solid relationships with just a handful of referring practitioners. A good website and SEO.
