WEDDINGS DESTINATION Southern New England

immeasurable. Exclusive. Significant. Every love story is the only story. Every wedding, the only day. This issue of Southern New England Weddings: Destination celebrates love in all its forms, styles, colors, seasons. From a handsome same-sex duo in Provincetown, to an elopement in New Hampshire and restaurant reception in Cambridge, we’ve highlighted the nuptials of the cutest couples throughout our special regions — with gorgeous variations of what marriage is all about. In addition to featuring 14 beautiful weddings, we’ve also highlighted our most sought-after regions, honing in on the fun finds and memorable moments to be had in each. We’ve culled out the best luxury accommodations, the hippest bridal boutiques, classic oceanside walks and idyllic island jaunts. Our collection of ‘Great Ideas’ includes late-night reception plans, kidfriendly menu bites, boho chic bridal inspiration and personalized keepsakes. We’ve narrowed in on some stunning floral options — all at wedding-worthy price points — and feature unique photography moments from those other important events for the newly engaged. Pretty Park Presence, this year’s fashion shoot, is a classic display of both glamorous and ethereal dress. Tucked within the North Shore’s Bradley Palmer State Park, Willowdale Estate provided a calm, natural setting for our day. Overflowing tulle, sparkly diamonds, stand-out hair and makeup and wild flowers completed the vision. This issue also features a styled shoot at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum in Bristol, Rhode Island—an enchanting 1920s-inspired look with period charm. As always, it was a true pleasure putting this issue together. Next on the docket is designing our annual Southern New England Weddings magazine, which will bring you more — more love stories, more inspiration, more ideas, more beauty — surrounded by these wondrous places we call home. To stay connected and informed, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and visit southernneweddings.com for print highlights, blog conversation and links to our digital issue and newsletters. From us to all of you, with love.

dreaming of a destination wedding that’s right here in southern New England or just looking for a fun outing for your guests, you’ll want to consider some of these lesserknown spots, which truly put the “island” in little Rhody. Located 13 miles off the coast and boasting 17 miles of pristine beaches, Block Island is a destination that’s sure to impress even the most discerning traveler. Some have compared its stunning landscape to that of Bermuda, where bicycles and mopeds are the preferred method of beach hopping. “The Block” offers plenty of things to do: hiking, kayaking, horseback riding and more.

When you cross Newport Bridge on a clear day, you will notice several little islands dotting the harbor. The most built up of the bunch is Goat Island, which is accessible via a causeway bridge and home to the Newport Harbor Lighthouse, Regatta Place, Belle Mer and the Hyatt Regency Newport. The lighthouse and bridge provide postcard-worthy backdrops, and the close proximity to downtown Newport is a plus.

BOAT CRUISES AND COCKTAILS

Newport Newport, Rhode Island, is the epitome of elegance and extravagance, with a history immersed in wealth and glamour. It’s known for mansions, whose architecture and manicured lawns remind us of a time when beauty was everything, as well as a bustling harbor and dramatic shoreline. But that’s not all: shops, boutiques and restaurants abound, which is why it’s such a famous wedding destination—not to mention a wedding photographer’s dream.

By Vivian Siempos Haidas

28

xx-xx_2015-16_WDE.Highlight.Newport.indd 28

Newport’s boating culture invites a host of social cocktail opportunities, perfect for either just the two of you or your entire wedding party. You can also suggest one of the following trips to your out-of-town guests for an experience they won’t soon forget. Schooner Adirondack II The crew of the schooner Adirondack II regard sailing and Newport as synonymous. Adirondack II is an 80-foot turn-of-the-centurystyle pilot schooner that hosts several sailing trips: Morning Mimosa Sail, Dark & Stormy Sail, Classic Day Sail and, the most popular, Sunset Sail. It can also be chartered for private events. 401-847-0000; sail-newport.com

Schooner Madeleine and Rum Runner II Classic Cruises of Newport offers sailing tours and excursions on its 72-foot schooner Madeleine as well as high-speed motor yacht tours on its classic speedboat Rum Runner II. Whether you are a sailboat enthusiast or have a need for speed, both boats offer harbor tours and sunset cocktail cruises in the spring, summer and fall. They can also be chartered for private events. 401-847-0298; cruisenewport.com

W BY LAURIE HIGGINS

When Noelle Barbosa and Aaron Watters planned their destination wedding, Newport was an obvious choice. Noelle had grown up vacationing in Newport and the Boston couple still visits frequently throughout the year. “Newport is one of our favorite places in New England,” says Aaron. “We’ve been going to The Chanler since we started dating. We went there for lunch early in the relationship and were hooked. It’s really tough to leave that view.”

The Chanler at Cliff Walk proved to be the perfect venue for their intimate group of 30 guests. They wanted their wedding to be like a family dinner in their home, with cocktails and wine perfectly paired with each course. Their cocktail hour included a selection of four passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by a three-course dinner with wine pairing and a clever title for each course.

Sometimes it takes a while to see what is right in front of you. The now Brooklyn, New York-based Dana and Dan Asadorian met in geometry class in Massachusetts (he is from Lincoln, she from Sudbury) at 14, but they didn’t date until after college. Dan popped the question at the end of a day involving playing hooky from work and puppy sitting for a friend. The search was then on for the perfect venue.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA RIGBY BY JESSICA BOWNE

“We wanted to choose a place that was special to both of us and convenient for our families in Boston and friends in New York,” says Dana. “We have great memories of our visits to see my Aunt Cindy and Uncle Roger in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. As soon as they offered their beautiful seaside backyard for the ceremony, we knew that was it.”

The intimate wedding mimicked the relaxed feel of the site with wood textures, linens, plants and flowers in shades of green and white. The bridesmaids wore dresses in complementary neutral shades and the men wore gray, with Dan easily recognized as the groom in a darker shade of the hue. Dana’s uncle officiated the ceremony and her aunt helped with the planning. more>

The moment when Tom Alberty confessed his love to close friend and future wife Jolanta Bielat could have been taken right out of a romantic movie. After being Jola’s best bud and work colleague for more than a decade, Tom confessed his love for her over casual drinks at a bar in St. Mark’s Place in New York City. “Tom and I had been close friends for so very many years, but since we had always been in relationships, the idea of dating never crossed my mind…until it did,” remembers Jola. “I was so thrilled the night when he opened his heart to me. We were both finally in the same place at the same time and the main thought going through my head was, ‘This is what all those stories and songs are about; this is a kismet moment.’” more> PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN MCGINN BY COURTNEY TOOMEY

NEWPORT + THE EAST BAY | STONE HOUSE INN

The couple’s love only grew from that fateful night and, just after Christmas, a little over a year later, Tom and Jola got engaged at the Stone House Inn in quaint Little Compton. “I was looking for a place in Rhode Island where I am from and where my parents continue to reside, a place with a strong connection to the ocean, local art community, my relatives and friends,” says Jola. “I also wanted a place that had a lot of nature, a strong connection to the land and that was just the right setting for sprawling out both folk and hippie elements. Stone House was the perfect mesh for all my dreams.”

OU HAVE FOUND THE GAL OR GUY of your dreams, said yes to “Will you?” and are now looking for the perfect location for your dream wedding. Providence, a city that celebrates its rich and vibrant history while embracing the present, makes for a beautiful backdrop to any wedding weekend. Much of its charm lies in its renovated and refurbished antique properties that boast modern amenities coupled with historic charm.

Pawtucket was given a revitalizing breath of fresh air when a rundown mill was converted into the Hope Artiste Village, a commercial and residential center for locals and their businesses. Part of this space is the 5,000-square-foot Events on Main, which can accommodate weddings and rehearsal

dinners with up to 545 standing guests or 245 seated. Marked by a beautiful brick floor, the raw space allows couples to fully realize their vision while working with caterer Blaze East Side, which will be opening a full-service restaurant, Village Kitchen, in the same building in the near future.

Not far away, another historic mill was given new life after a recent $550,000 exterior restoration. A new red cedar roof and coats of paint have returned the 1793 Old Slater Mill to splendor as a National Historic Landmark and a cornerstone of Rhode Island history.

which first opened in March 1900 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The architecture of the grand but intimate library, inspired by Sansovino’s library in Venice and the Sainte-Genevieve library in Paris, has a sweetheart staircase that is perfect for wedding photography.

The biggest draw of the space for brides and grooms is the authentically refurbished 1918 Breaktime Bowl and Bar bowling alley, where couples often take wedding photos and unwind with their guests after the reception. The bowling alley was originally built for the mill workers (to distract them from engaging in union activities) and has been preserved to its original patina. It still employs locals to handset the pins for bowlers for that extra historic touch.

“When you are on the campus, with the mighty Blackstone River flowing past, you feel as if you are in a different world,” says Lori Urso, executive director. “It has a very unique charm and a very significant history. This is why interest in Slater Mill as a historic venue for a wedding only continues to grow.”

Extensive renovations in 2012 helped return the library to its original elegance while preserving its marble mosaic tile floor and Beaux-Arts architectural details. The space can hold 300 guests for a cocktail reception, 200 for a seated dinner and 165 for a ceremony.

“This whole complex is such a heartbeat of Pawtucket,” says Charlotte Lewis, property manager of Hope Artiste Village. “It is so priceless when you see brides and grooms walk into something so beautiful and one of a kind.”

On the other side of a minor waterway that runs behind Courtney Waskiewicz’s childhood home in Canterbury, Connecticut, is the house where Justin Picard grew up, in the adjacent town of Plainfield. The distance separating the two was small, but it may as well have been the Atlantic Ocean, not the Quinebaug River. Courtney and Justin didn’t meet until they were in college, she at UConn and he at Eastern Connecticut State College, introduced by their respective best friends, who were dating at the time. Three years after they met, on Courtney’s birthday, they both took the day off from work and had lunch at the S&P Oyster Co. in Mystic. Justin had chosen that moment to propose, figuring his girlfriend wouldn’t find it odd to dine out for her birthday. But, when he suggested she open her present, Courtney demurred. “I didn’t want other people to start singing ‘Happy Birthday,’ ” she says. So off they went to a very windy beach in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, where, to Courtney’s surprise, Justin got down on one knee and proposed, giving her a ring tucked inside a big box on which he’d written, “Will you marry me?”

The couple had two years to plan their wedding and used those months to do it all themselves. At the same time, all on their own, they completely renovated her late grandparents’ home, which included a new floor plan, siding, windows and kitchen. “Even with working full time and renovating our house, wedding planning was still such a fun experience,” says Courtney. “At times it was stressful, but we agree that if we could make it through all of that, we can make it through anything!” more>

PROVIDENCE | ALDRICH MANSION On their wedding day, under a clear blue sky at castle-like Aldrich Mansion in Warwick, Rhode Island, the bride and groom were the picture of elegance and composure. A pink and champagne color scheme bathed the room in an ethereal light befitting the fairytale location, leaving few to wonder why the two Disney-obsessed flower girls, Justin’s nieces, were giddy with joy. While Courtney created artful signs and other props herself, she engaged Polly Hutchison of Robin Hollow Farm for the florals. “I loved working with Polly,” says the bride.

With its 19th-century French château features, oceanfront Aldrich Mansion filled Courtney’s requirement that her wedding venue “wow the guests.” She says, “It took our breath away the minute we walked in.” Also, with the wedding chapel on site, the convenience factor was undeniable. The bride in her classic, Guipure lace and tulle gown and her bridal attendants swathed in one-shoulder champagne chiffon dresses looked at home in the regal setting. While she “loved seeing family and friends,” Courtney says the most memorable moment was when she and Justin were by themselves with just the photographer, Faith Dugan, and her husband, Jefferson. “They were so great,” says the bride. “They even had us laughing.”

A Sweet Place to Unwind secluded sanctuary that is Honeymooning in the

South County By Lenore Cullen Barnes

Y

OUR BIG DAY IS A DONE DEAL. You’ve exchanged vows and celebrated with family and friends. Now it’s time to focus on you.

South County’s landscape is a beautiful wedding backdrop.

The time-honored tradition of a honeymoon offers a precious pause for newlyweds to celebrate their union, ponder their future and relish the moment. After the often-frenzied buildup and excitement of the wedding day (or weekend), most couples can’t wait to relax together in a romantic setting. The same reasons that make South County, Rhode Island, an increasingly popular destination wedding choice render it a prime candidate for a honeymoon. Scenic coast, beautiful beaches, restaurants, shops, museums, art galleries and entertainment venues allow you to do as much, or as little, as your hearts desire.

“We are a combination of forests that spill down to 100 miles of shoreline, including 20 public beaches, 17 golf courses and 15 museums,” says Myrna George, president and CEO of the South County Tourism Council. “We have an array of unique natural settings, outdoor recreation and cultural activities.”

If your perfect post-nuptial day includes dozing on a beach followed by an alfresco seafood dinner, visit East Matunuck Beach and then indulge at Matunuck Oyster Bar, where fresh produce and oysters harvested from the saltwater pond abutting the restaurant’s patio are deliciously prepared. If the experience whets your educational appetite, you can tour both the Matunuck oyster and vegetable farms. Get out on the water with a guided kayak tour by Narrow River Kayaks in the John H. Chafee Wildlife Preserve in Narragansett. Or explore Narragansett Bay on a Rhode lsland Lighthouse Cruise and Newport Harbor Tour, departing from Quonset Point in North Kingstown, offered by Rhode lsland Bay Cruises. Prefer to pick up the pace?

away while they’re offered a welcome glass of champagne. We also place a bottle of champagne in newlyweds’ rooms.

Throughout the summer, a number of venues host outdoor musical performances. Grab a blanket and enjoy a romantic evening under the stars while listening to the Wakefield Concert Band at Marina Park in South Kingstown or sample the Summer Outdoor Concert Series at the gazebo opposite Narragansett Beach. Lose yourself in a performance at Theatre by the Sea in Matunuck or catch the Colonial Theatre’s long-running and much-lauded Shakespeare Festival in Westerly’s Wilcox Park.

“The rooms are incredibly luxurious but there’s also plenty to do on the property, from wine tastings and culinary classes to art classes and croquet clinics,” continues Traskos. “Couples can arrange for special amenities like rose petal baths or chocolatecovered strawberries delivered to their room. They can also enjoy in-room spa treatments.”

Some of the Signature Suites have direct access to the beach and all have balconies or terraces. “We’re seeing a lot of ‘minimooners’ here—couples who come for a night or two right after the wedding and before they travel somewhere else for a lengthier honeymoon,” says Traskos. Whatever your time frame, South County offers memorable places and experiences befitting your first vacation as a married couple—and many anniversary celebrations to come.

South County beaches are perfect for engagement shoot portraits.

Depending on your taste, book the honeymoon suite at the Stagecoach House Inn in Wyoming, a romantic room in the 1900 House B & B in Narragansett or a waterfront room at the Weekapaug Inn in Westerly. Open year-round, the inn is now a Relais & Châteaux property, with fine dining and views extending over the Atlantic to Block Island. Another luxurious retreat is the worldclass Ocean House, which overlooks the Atlantic from the bluffs of Watch Hill. “It’s a true getaway destination,” says Candice Traskos, director of communications. “From the moment guests arrive, they’re treated like royalty. One February, Frank and Deb escaped the winter and traveled to Napa Valley. “We landed in San Francisco and he was acting strange,” says Deb. Frank had arranged for a private table overlooking the majestic Domaine Carneros vineyard, where he proposed with a timeless engagement ring that he selected himself. “I still look at it and am still in love with it,” Deb reveals.

Blooms for Any Budget BY COURTNEY TOOMEY

NO MATTER HOW SIMPLE OR EXTRAVAGANT, flowers are a musthave for your wedding day. Blooms not only add stunning color, rich texture and delightful fragrance to any setting, they also completely transform any atmosphere. From dahlias to daisies to garden roses, hydrangeas, orchids and more, a variety of breathtaking arrangements are available to every bride for every budget.

Les Fleurs of Andover, Massachusetts, specializes in creating flower arrangements that reflect nature’s beauty. Owner Kerianne Nelson believes that, no matter the budget, a bride and groom can create a richer, more elegant ambience by incorporating flowers into their big day. “If the bride and groom are more modest, we focus on centerpieces, bouquets and boutonnieres that primarily use seasonal flower selections. Arrangements with hydrangeas, garden roses, luscious greenery and even candles are perfect,” says Nelson. “For a wedding

64

with a luxury budget, there actually isn’t a huge shift in blooms but rather in the quality and scale of the designed arrangements. We love adding fruit such as kumquats, figs and pears. These elements spark conversations and add so much more to your centerpieces.”

Navya Kelly, owner of the Little Flower Cottage in Scituate, Massachusetts, also believes that floral accents are all about scale when it comes to saving or splurging. “We always recommend premium flowers, but if the bride and groom are working with a smaller budget, we suggest fewer arrangements with more greenery and fillers. Garden roses, peonies and hydrangeas are more budget-friendly blooms while traditional roses and orchids are more expensive,” says Kelly. “However, I love to steer clients to embrace seasonal blooms. In New England, something stunning is happening every season.”

With so much wedding inspiration available these days, it is much easier to choose your own style of flowers—but it’s still important to trust the professionals. “Using inspiration sourced from Pinterest, magazines and online is great because it helps the couple visualize what we are describing,” says Nelson. “However, working with an experienced professional is also priceless. Don’t be afraid to trust your florist to make some decisions. It is so exciting for our designers to create floral art and surprise clients. It might not be the right choice for everyone, but you get the best results.” Barrett Prendergast, owner of Valleybrink Road, also likes to think outside the box for brides and grooms. Not your traditional florist,

Valleybrink Road specializes in gift boxes for bridesmaids, groomsmen and other wedding guests. Each box is made of natural wood, hand painted according to the aesthetics of the wedding and filled with fresh flowers, candy and other gifts that represent the bride and groom. “Our gift boxes often contain ethereal, whimsical arrangements—not the traditional. I tell my clients to think about who they are as a couple in order to make the gift box about why everyone is coming together to celebrate that day,” says Prendergast. “I also like to connect with the florist, who can help guide the choices.

“Sometimes the flowers follow the color palette of the wedding; sometimes they are totally different,” she continues. “It’s a wonderful gesture for people in the wedding and, when they receive the box, they are blown away.”

Budget Buys Every couple deserves gorgeous blooms on their wedding day, no matter the budget. So if your pockets aren’t deep enough to hire a florist, don’t fret. These big-box names may offer more bang for your buck.

Blooms by the Box: If you’re the DIY-kind, Blooms by the Box is for you. Touted as the wholesale flower superstore, the website packages and ships almost any flower; plus it provides a ton of free, do-it-yourself guides and advice on arranging like a pro. Stop & Shop: This supermarket isn’t just food friendly. The floral department provides a wide range of flower selections as well as premade centerpieces with glassware and beautiful basket arrangements. Corsages, toss-away bouquets, boutonnieres and petal boxes are also available.

xx-xx_2015-16_WDE.FEATURETTE.BloomsForEvery.indd 66

Prendergast caters to all types of brides and grooms, even those on smaller budgets. “For a tight budget, I might suggest a chocolate bar wrapped in white paper with the bride and groom’s favorite flowers. It still looks thoughtful and beautiful. For a couple looking to spend more, the possibilities are endless,” she says. “Some ideas would be to include the couple’s favorite coffee, tequila, soap, candle scents, books and/or flowers. We work to make the vision realized no matter what.” Whether your wedding day is stunningly simple or amazingly extravagant, skipping the flowers to save a few pennies might be a huge regret. “I always say that instead of spending money on little things, spend it on gorgeous blooms because it can transform the day,” says Kelly. “Instead of your wedding looking like a big party, flowers make the atmosphere different and special. It makes you feel like a bride.”

The Guy’s Guide to Boston meant for the men Hot city haunts

By Jessica Freedman

B

OSTON’S DEEP HISTORY, amazing views and iconic status make it the perfect place for a wedding. But let’s be honest: the city’s best wedding factor is how unbelievably fun it is. A wedding weekend is not only about celebrating the couple but also about reconnecting with friends and family. So, while the bride and her girls are catching up—grooms, take some time to explore Boston with your guys and discover the city that will set the stage for your nuptials. LEFT: HALLIE ABACHERLI. RIGHT: COURTESY OF THE BLEACHER BAR.

A sail on the Tupelo Honey makes for the perfect pre-wedding activity with your best men. BYOLR!

It is remarkably easy to get around Boston. Tourists typically visit Faneuil Hall and the Back Bay, but some hidden gems are establishing themselves as wedding weekend “musts.” The Seaport, located in South Boston, is one of the city’s most up-and-coming districts and also home to Boston Harbor. Lo McShay, founder of Boston event planning firm LoLo Event Design, suggests renting a boat for the day. “It’s a fun way to do something together where everyone

Beneath the cabanas you will find a combination of chaise lounges and luxurious cushioned couches along with a large complimentary fruit platter. Have your voyage catered by a local restaurant or BYOLR (bring your own lobster rolls)— anything goes with Honey. “It gets people out and about to enjoy what Boston has to offer,” says McShay. Blessed with another beautiful day in Boston? The rooftop pool at The Colonnade Hotel is the perfect way to spend it. You can soak up

The rooftop pool of The Colonnade Hotel is a great place to unwind with the guys. COURTESY OF THE COLONNADE HOTEL

When in Boston, do what Bostonians do: watch baseball. Gather the guys and buy some tickets for the next Red Sox game or head over to a local sports bar to watch the game. The Bleacher Bar is located quite literally under Fenway’s infamous Green Monster. The not-so-typical sports bar features a giant window that looks out onto the field, so guests can get the true Fenway experience while also enjoying classic pub fare. Get there early on game day and grab a seat by the bar to watch the whole game or sit in the highly soughtafter lower level where the waiting list is long and guests can only watch a portion of the game (because the view is that good).

comfy and sip on the hotel’s signature frozen sangria because this pool stays open ‘til 10.

The Colonnade’s rooftop bar at night.

For a worthwhile evening of dinner and drinks, we suggest nearby Somerville’s Saloon, over in Davis Square. The woodpaneled walls and red leather cushions will transport you back to the 1920s, when speakeasies were the destination of choice. Saloon’s upscale bistro cuisine and extensive whiskey selection are sure to start out any night on a memorable note. If you’re not a whiskey fan, not to worry: this menu consists of innovative libations to match any man’s preference. Overflowing with activities, Boston prevails as the quintessential location for your destination wedding. But guys, don’t let the girls have all the fun. Embrace this time to bond with your best men and get excited for your lifelong adventure with your future spouse.

They often say that you meet someone when you least expect it, and for Jamie and Barry this was no exception. “We met at a restaurant in Seattle,” says Jamie. “Barry helped me fix something that was wrong with my car.” As for the proposal, that was also an unexpected surprise. “We accidentally got engaged in a ramen shop near our house in Seattle,” she says. “I was feeling upset because I wanted him to propose

We live in Seattle and were getting married in Boston, which is where my family lives, and didn’t have time to zip around to a million different locations. It was perfect,” says Jamie. more>

Admittedly, the couple wanted their big day to feel more like a party than a traditional wedding, and the cozy, sophisticated space, decorated with colorful peonies, was just the right setting. “I wanted it to feel very grownup, which it did,” adds Jamie. The appetizers and the range of demi-cocktails were their favorite part of the day. “Of course, we barely got to eat anything because we were so busy with our guests,” admits Jamie, “but we certainly had some of the cocktails.”

Choosing a location for their August wedding was the hardest part of designing their wedding day. Both Paloma and Gabriel had family in Mexico, but the couple wanted to be married in Boston, where they had begun their lives together. Once they saw the Boston Public Library, the decision became easier. “We thought it was so gorgeous,” says Paloma. “It’s very regal and elegant.”

The beautiful venue meant the couple could take a simple approach to planning. For the ceremony in the Abbey Room (“It has a very spiritual feeling,” says the bride), they created a striking wall of greens in the antique fireplace—a suggestion from the bride’s mother, a landscape architect. In her own bouquet, Paloma included miniature calla lilies as a tribute to her grandfather, who had recently passed away. “It was his favorite flower,” she says. more>

For the courtyard reception, the couple celebrated their shared heritage with Mexican touches. Traditional paper-lace banners fluttered above the party while guests enjoyed a Mariachi band and sampled a raw bar. “We wanted to give everyone a treat to experience Boston,” says Paloma. Other treats included the beer and wine list (a creative collaboration between the couple, who are craft beer enthusiasts, and their oenophile fathers); a wedding carrot cake (“My parents had it at their wedding,” says Paloma); and late-night milkshakes. To keep the dance floor festive, they brought out fun props such as inflatable guitars and plastic sunglasses: “Party favors are a Mexican tradition,” says Paloma.

Trolleys are the best beach bridal transportation.

Cape Cod and the Islands: Quaint and Coastal

There are as many reasons to choose Cape Cod, Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard for your destination wedding as there are scenic beaches, bays and sand dunes in this coastal triad. Personalizing your celebration is all in the details and the Cape and Islands offer bountiful natural and manmade amenities. Thanks to an abundance of farmers markets, chefs are increasingly incorporating fresh, regional produce and seafood into menus. Nature’s gifts extend to the decorative as well, providing a spectrum of organic elements for floral arrangements and accents. And since this special region encompasses travel both by land and sea, there’s a variety of transportation options suited to the needs of you and your guests. Settle on these standouts and you won’t be disappointed.

TRUSTED TRANSPORTATION

Trolley travel makes for some adorable photo ops.

Arriving in style—and comfort—is a priority for many brides and White Tie Luxury Transportation, based in East Falmouth, boasts a top reputation earned through 70 years of service. In addition to delivering the bride to the ceremony and the newlyweds to an off-site photo location, reception and even to the airport later, White Tie can also take care of the wedding party and guests. Mini-coaches, for 24, 29, 33 or 37 passengers, shuttle guests from their hotels to the ceremony and reception and safely home again. whitetielimo.com Traveling by trolley is a festive and picture-perfect way for the wedding party to arrive and depart from the ceremony. Plymouth-based Trolleys by Tes offers both air-conditioned/heated and open-air versions, all iPod compatible so the wedding party can celebrate to their own tunes. Cold bottled water is on hand and guests are welcome to bring champagne aboard. Some trolleys include handicap lifts. “Come see the trolleys in person, so you have an idea of the quality of our vehicles,” says manager Julie Kaviar. ”And our wedding packages begin at the time of pickup; we do not charge for transportation time to and from the wedding location.” trolleysbytes.com If you’re island-bound for your big day, Hy-Line Cruises offers special discounted rates for wedding parties. “Contact Dee Forand, director of group sales,” says Philip Scudder, vice president of marketing. “She’ll make it easy for the wedding couple. And of course, book as early as possible. Nantucket especially is growing increasingly busy as a wedding destination.” hylinecruises.com

BEST BEACH FLORALS

Karen Taddei, owner of Lilacs Florals, creates elegant arrangements with crystal and vintage silver elements alongside organic details for a sophisticated clientele who choose the Cape as a backdrop for their wedding. “My arrangements are inspired by the beach and Cape Cod surroundings, but not in a literal sense,” says Taddei. “I’d describe myself as a little left of center. I work in a classic style but try to make it more whimsical and unique. I like to combine hard and soft elements, like mercury glass, driftwood and garden roses for a coastal and romantic feel. My goal is to translate the bride’s personal style with flowers, and I’m very fortunate to be given artistic license to do that.”

Life imitating art – that’s how Steve Ballerini describes his decade-long courtship with Colin Bohrer. In 2013, the duo shared production credits on Love Is Strange, an independent film about two men (played by John Lithgow and Alfred Molina) who wed after 39 years together. “We premiered the film at Sundance the year we were married and it was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics,” says Steve. The pair first met and exchanged casual conversation in Guerneville, a majestic hillside town nestled in California’s Russian River Valley. In hopes of reconnecting, Steve made several trips to a San Francisco bar frequented by Colin and, after missing each other for two months, they finally met again and realized they were actually neighbors. for the next summer,” says Colin. One of the day’s most touching moments was when the bands they had worn for the past seven years as symbols of their commitment were placed in a handkerchief made by Steve’s late grandmother. Guests then held the package as they said a prayer or expressed good thoughts. “It just renewed the rings’ meaning when we put them back on,” says Steve. For a classic and timeless look, the duo donned preppy tan suits, playful bow ties, eye-catching pocket squares and succulent boutonnieres. Hydrangeas, peonies and antique roses dressed the reception and nautical-inspired favors (pewter whale-shaped bottle openers for the men and Alex + Ani anchor bracelets for the women) fulfilled the event’s “New England fisherman chic” theme.

Steve even paid homage to Colin’s love for The Wizard of Oz by hiding a statue of the Cowardly Lion on the cake table. The figurine was a gift from Colin’s mother and has been part of the couple’s life together since the beginning. “I hid it in Steve’s luggage before a business trip and it followed him to London,” says Colin. “Now it’s my turn to figure out where he’ll turn up next.” The couple honeymooned in a cabin located on the historic Captain Jack’s Wharf for the entire summer with their dog, Ralphie. “We love anything to do with art, history and the Cape,” says Steve. “It was a perfect place to live for a couple months.”

Kerrin and Michael Pitcher have a deep love for the ocean, and with Cape Cod being a key getaway spot throughout their relationship, it seemed fitting for the two to wed by the water. The couple chose the beautiful Wianno Club in Osterville to host their reception. Their unique yet classic style, along with Kerrin’s desire to wed in her mother’s wedding dress, sparked the idea of a vintage wedding. The pair definitely put a spin on “vintage” by adding hints of glamour and also incorporating Cape Cod flavor. more>

Michael and his groomsmen were dressed to the nines in crisp, black Tommy Hilfiger tuxes. The Wianno Club was stunningly decorated with off-white hydrangeas, hand-sewn lace runners and silver table décor. Fancy venue finds

Eolia Mansion in Waterford was named after the island home of Aeolus, god of the winds. It was the summer home of the Harkness family, who left the mansion to the state along with the 230 acres that are currently Harkness Memorial State Park. With panoramic views of Long Island Sound and fountains and sculptures, there are many features that set it apart. “We’re right on the water, we’ve got beautifully landscaped gardens and it’s a spectacular venue,” says Sally Hardess, Eolia’s wedding planner. RIGHT AND BELOW: The grounds of Burr Mansion provide a serene atmosphere for both wedding ceremonies and receptions.

HISTORIC MANSION WITH SWEEPING LAWNS and well-manicured gardens offers the perfect backdrop for a romantic and glamorous wedding. Connecticut has many estates that fit the bill with unique architectural features, lush flowers, fountains, benches and even hidden spots. Each allows you to add your own love story to the property’s storied past. Most receptions begin outside with cocktails under a tent amid the gardens. Then guests move inside to dine by candlelight before returning to the tent for dancing and the cake cutting. The maximum guest capacity is 150 and a tent is included in the rental fee. The Wadsworth Mansion was built in the early 1900s in Middletown as a summer country residence for Colonel Clarence Wadsworth and his wife, Katherine, who enjoyed it for over 30 years. Afterward, it became a convent and religious retreat for women for the next 40 years. The city took over the building and finished restoring it in 1999.

“It’s very private and the grounds are exquisite,” says wedding planner Deborah Moore. “We’re a venue where brides have a tremendous amount of flexibility to design the wedding of their dreams. We only do one rental a day.” The property can hold up to 200 people but that number increases to 750 if you add tents to the lawn. You have the opportunity to use your own caterer or choose from a list of nine preferred ones. The Beaux Arts-style mansion has a lovely elevation and the back of the building is paneled with glass, so it’s bright even on rainy days.

Inside, the venue can hold 80 people for a seated dinner or 125 for a cocktail party format. They have a tent that can be set up outside to expand seating to 200 for a seated event or 300 for a cocktail format. Interior features include original 18th-century wood paneling, hand-carved fireplaces and Dutch tiling.

Henry’s proposal was music to Kathleen’s ears. Literally. On Kathleen’s birthday, Henry, a singer in two chorale groups, said he’d written her a birthday song. “But it wasn’t a birthday song,” says Kathleen, who, after eight years of dating (they knew they would eventually get married but were in no rush), was taken completely by surprise. Only eight months later, on September 20, 2014, Henry and Kathleen exchanged vows in the Sailing Pavilion at the Wadawanuck Club in Stonington, Connecticut. The couple resides in Washington, D.C., but Henry’s parents live in Stonington and are club members. “I have two older sisters and since my mom already got to have two weddings and Henry’s mom doesn’t have any daughters, we decided to have the wedding in Stonington,” says Kathleen. “The club isn’t typically a wedding venue but they were able to accommodate us on relatively short notice and the setting is unbelievably beautiful.” Kathleen didn’t have a detailed vision of the wedding. “I just wanted to have our families and friends come celebrate with us and have fun,” she says. “I didn’t have any theme in mind. Vermont Ceremonies indoor or out Country-chic venues for “I Do’s” By Noelle Barbosa

K

NOWN FOR ITS DEWY MEADOWS, lofty mountaintops and barns of yesteryear, Vermont has long been an exclusive destination for couples seeking a classic farm-and-field setting for the day they say “I do.” From sleek birch trees nestled along miles of lush pasture to seasonal blossoms swaying in freshly cut grass, the scenery offered by these four rustic retreats lends depth, character and sensible style to those eager for something that’s country-chic.

Grand views at the wedding Knoll at The Mountain Top Inn and Resort, Chittenden. RIGHT: A bride and her wedding transportation at The Mountain Top Inn and Resort.

The Mountain Top Inn and Resort Originally a turnip farm in the 1870s, The Mountain Top Inn and Resort in Chittenden is today one of the leading venues for lovers longing to embrace earth and elegance on their wedding day. The most soughtafter spot to say “I do” is on the Knoll, a serene stretch of land where majesty meets tranquility. Mountains hug a bountiful meadow and dip to an 80-acre reservoir below, while arbor pine benches beckon guests to sit and appreciate this unspoiled landscape. “Our view sets us apart from other properties,” says General Manager Khele Sparks.

114

xx-xx_2015-16_WDE.Opener.VT.indd 114

Couples opting to stay indoors favor the barn’s mid-level Loft. Built in 2012, the 17,000-square-foot structure spans three floors and offers panoramic views of provincial splendor by way of massive floorto-ceiling windows. “Everyone is looking for a barn,” says Sparks. “It’s a new structure made to look old. The exposed duct work gives it an industrial flair.”

The Inn at Round Barn Farm

Soon-to-wed animal enthusiasts flock to this pastoral peak for its equestrian program in the summer months. Some brides even choose to arrive at the ceremony on horseback.

“Our round barn was built from a Shaker design by the Joslin family in 1910 and remained a working dairy barn until 1969,” says Kim Donahue, who purchased the country oasis with her husband in 2014.

Three distinct outdoor sites offering the prestige of a simpler time lure couples to The Inn at Round Barn Farm. Located 20 miles southwest of Montpelier in the quaint village of Waitsfield, the 245-acre property offers rolling hills and rural charm at every turn. The property’s yellow barn is one of the few round barns still standing in Vermont.

Couples can exchange their vows among the mountains and meadowland or gather at the Willows, a pond-side locale situated under weeping willows and birches. Brides and grooms also have the option of tying the knot at a rock altar at the Point. “The careful landscape planning affords stunning gardens and ponds for our guests to enjoy and provides a memorable backdrop for photos,” says Donahue. Longing for a ceremony deeply rooted in rustic elegance, Abigail Cane and Todd Carroll exchanged vows alongside lily pads and lotus flowers at the Willows in June. “Our guests were thrilled when the cows came down to the fence to join the celebration,” says Cane. “The well-manicured grounds and extraordinary gardens were juxtaposed with the surrounding farmlands, giving us a perfectly elegant location.” And if Mother Nature rains on a wedding parade, the Milking Parlor, located inside the barn, is an alluring alternative, with its whitewashed walls and gleaming wood floors. southernNEweddings.com

The Vermont Inn provides the setting and service newlyweds desire.

Riverside Farm Nestled on the edge of the Green Mountains in Pittsfield, Riverside Farm comprises six beautifully restored barns on 700 acres of countryside. In this unpretentious corner of the world, couples are drawn to the raw serenity and antique charm of Vermont.

The Vermont Inn Tucked in the historic town of Mendon, The Vermont Inn offers couples a family-friendly feel with some dozen guest rooms. This rambling 1840s-era farmhouse flaunts an amazing panoramic view of the mountains, wooing brides and grooms to secure the entire property for their intimate affair. Outdoor ceremonies have use of the property’s four-acre lawn, which offers a striking backdrop of the inn’s red façade and Killington and Pico Mountains, says Innkeeper Emily Cykon.

The famed “Kissing Tree” in the meadow is an attractive outdoor ceremony site. Couples electing this alfresco spot can also incorporate the rural appeal of the farm’s covered bridge. Their hometowns and their chosen colleges were in different states. But geographic distance didn’t stop Amy and Andrew from finding each other. “He grew up in Minnesota and went to Connecticut College. I grew up in New York and went to Hamilton College. For our junior year abroad, we both decided to go to Dublin, Ireland,” says Amy. “Since neither of our schools was big enough to host its own program, we ended up on the same trip.” Their long-distance relationship continued until college graduation, when they decided to make Boston their new joint home. A few years later, during a romantic getaway to Atlantis in the Bahamas for their sixth anniversary, Andrew surprised Amy with a table on the beach set just for two. He proposed with a custom designed engagement ring sporting two rubies (Amy’s birthstone) flanking the central diamond and two inlaid Celtic trinities, a nod to their relationship’s overseas start. Deciding to wed in Vermont was easy for the like-minded partners: “I love the fall foliage up there and Vermont reminds Andrew of visiting upstate Minnesota during family vacations,” says Amy. Working closely with planning firm LoLo Event Design and founder Lo McShay, the couple set about transforming Amy’s family’s farm in Wilmington into an unforgettable, weekend-long wedding destination. “The setting has a lot of sentimental value but they wanted to elevate the farm experience with rustic-chic design,” explains Lo. Amy agrees that hay bales and pumpkins were not on the docket: “Our vision was rustic prep. Andrew’s mom described it as ‘country club on the farm.’ ” Fine china and table linens in two shades of blue, cobalt and cornflower, brought the “chic” while Provencal-style sunflower arrangements (showcasing Amy’s favorite flower) and wood chairs leant “rustic” appeal. During dinner for the 222 guests, projection lighting mimicked the effect of tree branches casting shadows on the tent canopy. “Lighting and floor

“Once Andrew and I had our first dance, everyone joined us on the dance floor until the very end,” adds Amy. “And to top it all off, when the clock struck midnight, it turned into Andrew’s 29th birthday, and the band led the party in a group ‘Happy Birthday’ sing-along.” Rain throughout the weekend posed some challenges and forced the ceremony under a tent and the cocktail hour inside. Thankfully, all of Lo’s contingency plans ensured a seamless flow of events. “I cannot tell you how many people said that they barely noticed it was raining!” laughs Amy.

New Hampshire Vacation Rentals for any length of time Sleek places to stay

By Vivian Siempos Haidas

N

Beaches and boat slips make Anchorage at the Lake a fun-filled getaway location for the wedding party.

EW HAMPSHIRE’S SPLENDOR, with its quaint towns and expanses of wilderness, majestic White Mountains and beautiful Lakes Region, is a fairy tale setting for a destination wedding. A richness of history and culture is entrenched in the people and the region, while the winding roads and trails lead to panoramic views of the landscape. New Hampshire is a sensational setting, whatever the season, and with its abundance of both outdoor activities and natural beauty, the Granite State will provide you and your guests memory-making opportunities at every turn. If you’ve pictured your dream wedding as a rustic yet romantic affair that is intimate for you and your guests, Anchorage at the Lake is the perfect spot. The sprawling 35-

122

xx-xx_2015-16_WDE.Opener.NH.indd 122

acre property perched on the shore of Lake Winnisquam has been a popular vacation destination since the 1800s. Weddings are held from May to October, and the grounds can

accommodate up to 250 guests. In addition, 30 comfortable cabins and lakefront houses are available to house out-of-town guests. Even if your wedding is not held on its grounds, Anchorage at the Lake is an ideal place to put up guests. The absence of television and WiFi allows guests to focus on relaxation and take advantage of the private beaches, kayaks and hiking trails. They can rent boats and Jet Skis or go fishing. At the end of the night, under the stars, nothing beats toasting marshmallows and telling stories around the fire pit.

Tented reception alongside the water at Anchorage at the Lake.

New Hampshire’s Lakes Region abuts the White Mountains, which offer another beautiful backdrop for weddings. The dramatic peaks and changing colors and textures mean every season offers a unique visual experience. A majestic place to hold a wedding, it can also be an adventure-filled location for your guests. Families who wish to stay in a house, where they will have a kitchen and living area, and friends who want to stay together can find what they’re looking for at White Mountain Vacation Rentals. With a large inventory of housing choices based on location and capacity, they can help your guests find exactly what they’re looking for.

When planning your destination wedding in New Hampshire, it is important not to overbook your guests’ schedules with things to do from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. “It may sound fun to have things consistently planned for your guests, but a lot of guests use destination weddings as a chance to have a mini vacation and would appreciate having some flexibility in doing what they choose in their spare time,” says Nicole Mower of Nicole Mower Weddings & Events, who plans weddings across New England. “Giving them information on the location and ideas on things to do and see is a great alternative to having either nothing planned or having too much planned.” Mower also advises having the ceremony and the reception at the same location so there is little downtime between festivities and guests don’t have to think about transportation. If the ceremony and reception are in two separate locations, she suggests offering transportation to guests as some may not have vehicles with them. Mower has used trolleys as one way to transport the wedding party and guests. They are a charming way to get everyone in the party mood and they can also serve as a backdrop for pictures. Wherever your New Hampshire wedding takes you, it will be a beautiful and memorable journey, one that your family and friends won’t soon forget.

Crescent Lake is perfect for a little R&R.

Online Rental Potential If your guests are tech savvy and want to look up unique accommodations based on specific criteria, then VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner), owned by HomeAway.com, and Airbnb, are for them. Each site allows you to search based on your destination and travel dates and then go further, allowing you to filter based on your specific needs and wants. There are several pictures of each property that give you a real sense of where you will be staying, the owner’s contact information, if you have questions or concerns, and reviews from previous vacationers to use as a guide. vrbo.com/airbnb.com

PHOTOGRAPHY BY I AM SARAH V PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIELLE RACITI

Every love story deserves a romantic, and equally memorable, first chapter. Amber and Dmitri, coy and lighthearted in their courtship, fell in love in the simplest and sweetest of ways. Dmitri, who was encouraged by a mutual friend to meet Amber at the tiny Portsmouth, New Hampshire, shop where she worked, stopped in one day to make a purchase and get a glimpse of his future wife.

“The moment I saw him, we both smiled and said hello,” says Amber. “It sounds really cliché, but he kind of lit up the room with a warm, positive energy.” After she rang up Dmitri’s items, Amber’s intuition told her she’d be seeing him once more. And just a few days later, he returned to ask her out and surprised her with a dozen red roses. After only five months of dating, Dmitri proposed during a day trip to North Conway amidst water and sunset views. The couple decided to forgo typical nuptials and instead planned an intimate elopement centered on their shared love. “We picked New Castle because of its beauty; we fell in love with that area,” says Amber. Great Island Common, a public park with 32 acres of green space and a gorgeous beach setting, was an idyllic ceremony site and a dreamy photographic backdrop.

Filled with laughter, love, nervousness and excitement, their elopement was a natural choice and a special gift that they gave to themselves. “I love Dmitri for so many reasons,” says Amber. “We share the same values and views of the world. He understands me and makes me feel appreciated and valued…he has such a big heart and is such a beautiful soul.” Says Dmitri of his bride: “I like the way she looks at the world and people. I like being silly with her—we make each other laugh like no one in this world. I love when she randomly sings a part of a song and then gets shy when she knows I’m listening. She makes me feel alive and important; she inspires me and makes me a better man.”

For Nick and Lindsay, a chance encounter led to a scenic wedding that took place in North Sandwich, New Hampshire. “Nick and I met while I was visiting the Bay Area, where I had lived and since moved from in January 2011,” says Lindsay. “Fast-forward a month and I moved back to Oakland and that was sort of that.” As for the engagement, Lindsay beat Nick to the punch. “At some point I realized that it was sort of silly to wait for Nick to propose when I knew I wanted to marry him, and so

I proposed in a somewhat spontaneous way one morning in July. I think he thought I was joking. Later he revealed he was planning a proposal too, so we were definitely on the same page,” she relates. The couple had a hard time deciding on what kind of wedding they wanted, or if they wanted one at all. But a family favor cleared the confusion: “Nick’s aunt and uncle generously offered to let us get married on their beautiful property in New Hampshire,” says Lindsay. “It was pretty much our dream spot and we are lucky to have had access to it.” more> southernNEweddings.com

Lindsay and Nick chose to have two ceremonies. They wanted to incorporate Nick’s Quaker background but ran into a snag when they were not able to marry themselves. “We thought the justice of the peace part would be more logistical than spiritual, but it ended up being an incredibly moving and intimate experience,” says Lindsay. “The next day we gathered with our favorite people, shared our vows with them and invited them to speak about love, marriage or anything appropriate for the occasion.” Community was a major theme of the wedding day. “Our friends and family were an immense help in getting ready,” says Lindsay. “From farmer friends who grew the food and flowers, to my aunties who arranged them, to our college friends who set up chairs, mixed cocktails, strung lights and so on and so on, we called upon the people we love over and over and they gave us so much more than we could have expected—and we had a lot of fun too.” CEREMONY LOCATION + RECEPTION VENUE: MCILVAIN FAMILY FARM. Maine churches offer

LANNING A WEDDING CAN BE A WHIRLWIND, but amid all the hype, there is nothing more magical than when the bride and groom look into each other’s eyes to exchange their vows. One of the few elements that can make that moment even more amazing is the setting, and the state of Maine does not disappoint. With its many quaint, picturesque churches, Vacationland offers the quintessential New England wedding experience. AMY SALERNO PHOTOGRAPHER; AMYSALERNO.COM

Nestled in the middle of Rockport’s bustling harbor and the fields of historic Aldermere Farms, Vesper Hill Children’s Chapel offers an intimate spot for tying the knot. The grounds are adorned with beautiful gardens sporting an array of annuals, perennials, herbs and trees. Not so coincidently located on Chapel Road, the church is ideal for a small wedding of 50 guests or less.

Whitney Fox, photographer with emilie inc. photography, gushed about her recent shoot at Vesper Hill. “The chapel is this tiny wooden structure on top of a hill with a meandering garden view. It was perfect for the couple, who had only their parents and

siblings in attendance,” recalls Fox. “The setting allowed them to have the quieter ceremony they were looking for with so much emotion.” At the Wilson Memorial Chapel located in East Boothbay, meandering garden paths are replaced by breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, with both Ram and Fisherman’s Islands off in the distance. Built in 1917, the church’s original stone walkway and unique stained glass windows make it one of a kind.

For the bride and groom with slightly simpler tastes, the Old Baptist Meeting House is picture-perfect. Located atop a hill in the heart of Yarmouth, the meetinghouse boasts a steeple that can be seen for miles and is considered a historical icon by the town’s tightknit community. More than two centuries old, the building has not only been used as a place of worship but also as a library, antiquarian society, meeting hall and even a lookout for potential enemy aircraft during World War II. Today it is available for weddings and other events. Brea McDonald, owner and founder of Brea McDonald Photography, describes Old Baptist Meeting House as a “really fun place to shoot a wedding.” She says, “It’s always exciting photographically to shoot texture.

The church has amazing texture on the doors and an ‘Old New England’ feel, which you don’t get with more modern churches. Also, the building is set high above the town and is very majestic.” McDonald also had the pleasure of taking photographs for a couple marrying at the St. James Church on scenic Prouts Neck, a peninsula in the town of Scarborough with spectacular ocean views. “This is such a special church. There’s nothing like it,” says southernNEweddings.com

McDonald. “Upon entering, you feel like you’re in the hull of a boat. The woodwork is amazing and there is so much history there. You can’t get much more seaside than the St. James.” Choosing to wed in an old-fashioned church or chapel is a reflection of a couple’s style. “I think one of the nicest things is when a church has character and personality,” says McDonald. “It speaks to who the couple is and it’s always fun to incorporate that into the photos on their wedding day.”

Anna had always known of Burke throughout their undergraduate years at New York University, but the two began building a true connection while studying abroad in London during their junior year. “We had similar interests,” says Anna. “We enjoyed traveling together and exploring museums.” Fast-forward seven years to the Monday before Thanksgiving and the two were living together in a cramped apartment in Brooklyn. “I was at work; he asked to go to dinner,” says Anna, who, when she got home, noticed Burke had cooked and cleaned the apartment. He proposed almost immediately in a tiny space behind their couch. “I was shocked!” says Anna. Her shock only escalated when Burke revealed that in only two hours they were heading to London where their love story began. “It was our first time back since we went abroad.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY BREA MCDONALD BY JESSICA FREEDMAN

Burke had been planning his proposal for nearly six months and had reset a cocktail ring that belonged to Anna’s grandmother. “The ring was too small to fit anyone in our family,” says Anna. However, she always loved the stone, so Burke collaborated with her cousin to create the engagement ring. more>

MAINE | WOOSTER FARM The two became official on the island of North Haven, Maine, where Anna had spent every childhood summer. After looking at several locations, they decided Wooster Farm was perfect. The farm, and former home of artist Frank Benson, was full of unique touches, including a paint-splattered barn that the couple used as a cocktail room. The nuptials took place under a birch bridal trellis on the property’s lawn where guests were able to look out over Penobscot Bay. Before the memorable dance party commenced, the couple snuck off together to catch the beautiful sunset. “We found a piece of sea glass and just kind of relished the moment,” says Anna.

But Celeste adds that there’s yet another factor to consider: “Having your photographer at these events removes the stress and responsibility of documenting them all yourself. So you can relax, put your camera or cell phone down and just enjoy the company of friends and family and be in the moment.”

A BRIDAL SHOWER, WELCOME PARTY, REHEARSAL DINNER:

weddings have turned into delightful weekend-long celebrations. The added events have couples asking themselves one big question: should they hire a photographer to cover more than just the wedding? The resounding answer is yes, especially as family and friends who rarely see each other gather for these intimate events.

Photographer Corinna Raznikov notes that it is helpful to have the same photographer take

Wedding photographers chronicle more than just the big day

“There are many benefits to hiring your wedding photographer to cover wedding-related events such as bridal showers and rehearsal dinners,” says Matt Celeste of Blueflash Photography. “One great and obvious benefit is that you will have professional photos to remember the events by. A lot of these moments go by so fast, and you’re so busy being involved in them that, without photos, you’ll miss half of them. The photos allow you to relive the occasion whenever you’d like.” Celeste points out that these pre-wedding events are integral to making the photographer and couples even more comfortable working together. “It just makes the wedding day go that much more smoothly and enjoyably for everyone,” he says.

the images of all wedding-related activities so that the styles match. “If you hire a different photographer for the rehearsal dinner, it just won’t all go together,” she says. “I also build suites of albums for my clients now, with the wedding album being the main book and then all the other events becoming smaller, matching books.”

Brides have also become aware of the importance of these meticulously planned bridal events. “There was so much thoughtful planning that went into my wedding, including all of the special events surrounding the big day, but because I was so focused on my husband-to-be and spending time with my incredible family and

friends, I didn’t get to appreciate all of the amazing details that came together,” says Whitney Swaffield, a bride who worked with Emilie Sommer of emilie inc. photography. “My bridesmaids threw me the most beautiful shower, and I am so thankful that I can look back at the photos of the gorgeous flowers and vessels, the incredible favors and southernNEweddings.com

xx-xx_2015-16_WDE.FEATURETTE.TheOtherWed.indd 137

paper details and, most importantly, some very sentimental moments with all of the amazing women in my life.” Weddings have now become multi-day experiences with organized events, observes Sommer. “Rehearsal dinners are no longer just for the wedding party and are now typically the kick-off to a wedding weekend, with ‘welcome

dinners’ sometimes preceding on the day before,” she says. “Bridal showers now have coordinators, florists, bakers and caterers. With so much more planning—and money—being poured into several days, it’s an added bonus to have a photographer there to capture the spirit from start to finish.”
