I

n each issue, every article has a backstory. Here are a few of them: Almost a year ago, I sat down with writer Lisa Cavanaugh at Rendezvous Café in Hyannis to discuss ideas for a philanthropy article. We started talking about the Spectacle of Trees at the JFK Hyannis Museum (this year, it will be held at the Cape Cod Mall), which benefits Cape Cod charities. Then I mentioned the Starbucks’ “Stuff a Stocking” project, a program that helps teenagers. Since both are located in the village of Hyannis, the feature, “It Takes a Village,” was born. We then added A Baby Center’s Christmas cards and fundraising efforts at The Lemon Tree Village Shops in Brewster. Gardens Aglow is one of my favorite holiday family events. We consistently highlight the treasured tradition at Heritage Museums & Gardens every year. But we have never run a behind-the-scenes, full-length feature. In the story, “It’s

Beginning to Look Like Gardens Aglow,” writer Marina Davalos gets the inside scoop from director of horticulture Les Lutz on what it takes to put it together every year. Need ideas on how to decorate your table and home for the holidays? We teamed up with local interior designer Angela Hamwey, who styled a photo shoot for us at a beautiful home in Osterville. I brought my family’s antique silverware, Hamwey picked up some antique candle holders and vintage pink glass plates at the Antique Center of Cape Cod in Dennis, and Chatham-based florist Patrice Milley put together some beautiful arrangements for us. It was truly a team effort. As always, we provide great ideas for perfect presents and highlight dozens of events and activities happening on the Cape this holiday season. Originally from New England, LISA CAVANAUGH summered on Cape Cod, where she now lives, and graduated from Boston College. After working in OffBroadway productions in New York City, she moved to Los Angeles where she became a Hollywood story editor, producer and freelance writer. A Coastal Christmas TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE HOCHKEPPEL “This thing kind of took off on its own,” says retired commercial fisherman Nick Nickerson, 70, of his latest shell ornaments at Chatham Coastal Creations. What started out as a method “to keep his mind occupied” while diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer more than a decade ago, has now turned into a hand-crafted gift—available in 25 stores on the Cape. Now cancer free, Nickerson has made more than 2,500 ornaments and his backyard is surrounded by enough shells to keep him busy for the next two years. The labor-intensive process starts with a thorough cleaning of the sea scallops shucked at sea. After scrubbing and grinding the shells, Nickerson uses capecodmagazine.com

a powerful water laser jet cutter—so strong it can cut through steel—at Hersey Clutch Company in Orleans to create the designs. T

he diamondback terrapin, once hunted nearly to extinction and currently designated a threatened species in Massachusetts, is slowly making a comeback on Cape Cod—thanks in large part to the efforts of staff and volunteers at Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. “In the 1980s, it was rare to see a diamondback terrapin,” says sanctuary director Bob Prescott. “Most people who lived their whole lives here had never seen one.” The WBWS Diamondback Terrapin Conservation Program began protecting terrapin nests in 2005, resulting in the successful release of more than 15,000 hatchlings into local marshes. While most of the monitored areas are located in Wellfleet, nesting activity is also monitored in Eastham and Orleans. This species is unique, as it is the only North American turtle adapted to brackish water habitats. After mating in the water in the spring, female terrapins come out of the marshes to lay their eggs in sandy areas above the high tide lines. During the months of June and July, each mature female (age 10 to 60) lays two clutches of eggs, approximately two weeks apart. Program staff and volunteers monitor nesting areas twice a day. When a nest is located, it is surrounded by a protective enclosure to ward off predators such as foxes, raccoons and crows. The turtle eggs then incubate for 60 to 90 days. The surviving hatch-

lings emerge and are evaluated and released into the upper marshlands where they burrow under brush or in the mud for the winter. Interested in learning more? A Party With the Stars BY LISA CAVANAUGH

T

his past summer, millions of Americans slipped on protective glasses and looked up in awe as our moon passed in front of the sun. For a group of Cape Cod amateur astronomers on Aug. 21, the solar eclipse was a terrific opportunity to share their passion. The Cape Cod Astronomical Society, founded in 1986 when Halley’s Comet last appeared in the inner solar system, meets monthly to view the cosmos and teach others about their craft. President Jim Lynch, a scientist emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said they had hoped to draw 30 to 40 visitors to their eclipse “star party.” So when more than 300 curious onlookers showed up at the Werner Schmidt Observatory at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School to view the eclipse, staff and volunteers quickly adjusted their game plan. They shared specialized glasses and created an orderly process to look through their professional

solar-filtered telescopes—two of which are located in the observatory’s 12.5-foot dome. Werner Schmidt, 103, was in attendance and still eager to look through a telescope set up outside his namesake observatory. Schmidt was instrumental in establishing the nonprofit Cape Cod Astronomical Foundation and getting the observatory funded and built. One of Schmidt’s goals was to encourage young people to learn about astronomy. CCAS continues to run cooperative astronomical studies programs for D-Y students. Charles Burke, a member of the observatory staff, encourages the public to join the CCAS and attend viewing parties. “People from all walks of life can join. rom its origins in the 1950s through the following decades of rock, disco, punk and heavy metal, the Mill Hill Club on Route 28 in West Yarmouth had seen the dancing moves of thousands of partiers by the time it closed in 2008. The blaring music and boisterous crowds are long gone, and the demolished club has now been replaced by The Mill Hill Residence, a senior living community. The newest addition to the Maplewood at Mayflower Place campus, the Mill Hill Residence opened in the late summer offering assisted living and memory care options in two distinct neighborhoods surrounded by gardens, terraces and courtyards. The Mill Hill party vibe lives on, however, through the capecodmagazine.com

Andrea Ellen, vice president of communications for Maplewood Senior Living, says that dozens of people who attended the ribbon cutting or stopped by since Mill Hill closed have shared happy stories of youthful fun at the club. “Musicians, people who met their spouses there, all sorts of people have told us their fond memories of the Mill Hill Club,” says Ellen. “It’s one of the reasons we chose to retain the name. O

n any given day, amid the bustle of Dennis Port’s main Route 28 drag, pleasing notes of piano, guitar, violin, ukulele, mandolin and even an Irish whistle emanate from the storefront of West Bend Music. The four musicianinstructor owners, Monica Rizzio, Demetrius Becrelis, Alex Becrelis and Clayton March run a thriving music education business here—while still finding time to perform their own songs and sounds. The two Cape Cod-based Becrelis brothers formed the popucapecodmagazine.com

lar pop/folk group Tripping Lily with Rizzio, a native Texan who met them in Nashville, Tennessee, at a singer/songwriter night. Throughout a decade of performing together, the trio were also offering musical instruction independently here on Cape Cod, so in 2009 they decided to join forces and open West Bend Music along with Clayton March, a clarinetist and fiddler. “Monica, Alex and I met Clayton at a local music gathering on the Cape called the Thursday Night Chefs and instantly gelled,” says Demetrius. “We started off as great friends, so it was very

arts culture | ARTIST PROFILE natural adding another component of partnership.” Their original location was located on a rather sharp twist of Route 28 not far from the Bass River. “One day I was looking at the building from across the street,” says Demetrius. “I’m standing in West Dennis and watching cars flying around that bend and the name just slapped me in the face.” While teaching hundreds of students of all ages keeps the four of them busy, they agree that the best part about music instruction is knowing how much they inspire others and witnessing their students morph into great musicians. The teachers also get a thrill from their older adult students who show the same level of excitement as the kids. “They are smiling from ear to ear and can’t wait to create a history with that instrument,” says Demetrius. The school moved to its current, larger location in 2011 to accommodate a long waiting list of people wanting to study music. “We were one of the first businesses to take a leap of faith when the Dennis Port revitalization first begun, and we are glad we did,” says Demetrius. “We love our neighbors, and we love how much pride each business has displayed.” Each of the owners has specialties in teaching and different trajectories in professional performance. Although Tripping Lily dissolved five years ago, the Becrelis brothers plan to bring it back in some form in the future. March is a very busy Celtic

performer who regularly takes his West Bend Celtic music students to Ireland, where they enter—and often win—music competitions. Rizzio has been building a solid solo career through an extensive tour schedule in the U.S. in support of her album “Washashore Cowgirl.” In addition to teaching and performing, Rizzio also founded and launched Vinegrass, a nonprofit music production company that raises money for scholarships, instruments and grants through concerts and an annual roots-music festival. “I started Vinegrass to help give back to those that helped me follow my musical dreams,” says Rizzio, who couldn’t afford instruments or lessons while growing up in East Texas. The organization’s newest project is an instrument donation program called Sponsor a Uke, and Rizzio calls it a chance to change a music student’s life. She and her three partners are clearly all very passionate about music and each credits West Bend for bringing the community together, while also bringing them closer to their own music. “You can’t say that about many jobs,” says Demetrius, “and because of that, we are extremely grateful.”

hen interior designer Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Company styled a beautiful home in Osterville for our holiday décor feature, she started with a light, distressedwood table and composed a rich color palette with flowers in deep shades of red; light pink glass plates; and vintage brass candlesticks. Then she layered on fresh greens from the outside and scallop shells filled with Himalayan pink salt. “We have so much [natural material] hanging out in the woods and on the beaches, we have an advantage living here,” says Hamwey, who started her Hyannisbased design company five years ago. “We can be coastal without everything being a starfish. Be a little unexpected and be creative.” Hamwey also suggests using food—herbs, clementines, figs, pomegranates—to decorate your kitchen island, buffet table, bar cart and table. If you’re planning on hosting a gathering this holiday season, Hamwey suggests looking around your house and taking stock of what you already have, and build from there. You might be surprised at what you find—white plates, vintage candlesticks, maybe even champagne coupes! From there, get outside, start snipping away—be sure to invest in a good pair of clippers—explore antiques stores, pull out your grandmother’s silver. But it’s your table—not your mother’s, insists Hamwey. “Use what you have, add to it. Mix it up!”

For the mantle, Hamwey suggests venturing out into the woods or your own backyard, pick some greens of your choice and add white pumpkins with vintage candlesticks. You can put up an artificial tree as early as Thanksgiving, decorate with white lights, add a shearling sheepskin rug nearby and leave it as a focal point through the winter. For a unique touch, fill scallop shells from the beach with freshly ground Himalayan pink salt.

A

lthough it can sometimes feel like the “big city” on Cape Cod, Hyannis is actually one of seven villages that make up the Town of Barnstable. Despite being home to a diverse population, a major hospital and the area’s transportation hub, Hyannis still retains a small-town attitude, especially during the Christmas season. Every December, Hyannis-based businesses and organizations lend a helping hand to less-fortunate neighbors. Here are three that incorporate Christmas-themed elements as a way to share the holiday spirit.

The Spectacle of Trees, held at the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum for many years, will be on display this year at the Cape Cod Mall.

F

or more than 11 years, the Cape Cod Charitable FunRaisers organization has been hosting this dazzling display of decorated Christmas trees to benefit dozens of local Cape Cod charities. The Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce executes the event, and this year the trees will be displayed at the Cape Cod Mall on Iyannough Road, after many years at the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum (which is planning a renovation of their lower level). Jessica Sylver, outgoing president/CEO of the chamber, says the Spectacle of Trees is important because it supports so many nonprofit organizations that serve our Cape Cod community. “The trees represent a wide range of charities across Cape Cod,” says Sylver. “Cancer organizations, children’s agencies, libraries, schools and animal welfare groups are among some of the nonprofits included this year.” More than 14 artificial Christmas trees will be on display from Dec. 1 through Dec. 9, each decorated by a different local organization and surrounded with valuable gifts. The goal for each group is to attract as many “tree bucks” as they can from their supporters and the general public. The $10 raffle coupons, which can be purchased through individual organizations and at the Spectacle of Trees display, are dropped into boxes near each tree, with one winner chosen from each. Those lucky folks win the tree, the decor and everything under and around it. Cape Cod Charitable FunRaisers reports that the 2016 Spectacle of Trees netted nearly $200,000 for participating charities. his winter, when you stop by the busy Starbucks at Hyannis’ Christmas Tree Promenade Plaza for a peppermint mocha or eggnog latte, you can also drop off a filled stocking for local teens in need. Their “Stuff a Stocking” project is a partnership with the Housing Assistance Corporation, which each year coordinates Christmas presents through donations for many homeless families on Cape Cod and the Islands. People are incredibly generous with gifts for young children, but HAC sees a shortage of teen-focused presents. So the Starbucks team has—for years—arranged to be the drop-off location for stockings containing items like hair and bath products, candy, socks, shaving kits, deodorant, sports water bottles, cards or small games, nail polish, Chapstick— all things that a teenager might love and need. The program was started four years ago by manager Mary Volk, who now manages the Starbucks in Mashpee Commons. HAC reports that there are more than 100 local teens in their

shelter and transitional housing programs that are homeless or at risk of being homeless. And while they cannot accept gift cards in the stockings, all of the other items are incredibly valuable to these youngsters during a vulnerable time. “These teens don’t have a lot of stuff and they see their peers with holiday gifts,” says Chris Kazarian, senior writer at HAC. “It is important to remember that even though they are older, they are still kids.” Fatih Akdemir, the Hyannis Starbucks store manager, says that people can drop off their filled stockings, or even a gift bag with items, at their location starting Nov. 1 until Dec. 15. Kazarian credits Starbucks for helping HAC in a variety of ways, including backpack drives and in-kind coffee donations for some of their other projects. “Starbucks has really helped HAC a lot,” he says. “I can’t say enough how everyone at Starbucks—employees and customers—are so generous to our clients.” haconcapecod.org/

or the past 10 years, Yarmouth Port artist Marieluise Hutchinson has been creating oil paintings of homey holiday scenes to be used as Christmas cards for the Hyannis-based A Baby Center. The nostalgic images are immensely popular and the sales of the cards have netted the organization, which provides diapers and other infant-care items to any Cape Cod newborn in need, more than $129,000. Hutchinson, who has shared her talents this way for local nonprofit organizations for more than 35 years, says she chose A Baby Center a decade ago because of a story she heard about a young mother who brought her infant with severe diaper rash to a pediatrician. “This poor mum had been rinsing and reusing diapers on her baby because she couldn’t afford them,” she says. “How could you not want to help?” A program of the Cape Cod Council capecodmagazine.com

of Churches, A Baby Center has been in existence for 17 years, and currently rents space on Willow Street from the Federated Church of Hyannis. Center director Robin Hayward explains that a family in financial crisis may have to make the desperate choice of changing their baby fewer times a day than is healthy. “We make this a safe, supportive space for young mothers to come and get whatever they need at no cost,” she says. “We provide new diapers, baby wipes, formula, and gently used clothing, baby books, linens. We want the Cape families that come in here to leave with a smile.” The annual sale of Hutchinson’s Christmas cards pays for nearly all the diapers the center provides throughout the year. “Marieluise spearheads the entire project,” says Hayward. “She is so diligent in taking the time to create the painting for us, getting sponsors for printing, marketing the NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017 

cards, everything. She is incredible.” A Baby Center starts selling the cards ($15 for a package of 15) online in the late summer and local merchants begin to stock them in the fall. Hutchinson also arranges the production of a limited number of tiles, which sell for $60 and are collectors’ items. “People really look forward to Marieluise’s card each year and we get to see the wonderful effects—both on the people who love to send them to their family and friends and the many young mothers that are helped by the proceeds,” says Hayward. or more than 20 years, Mark Kielpinski has been part of the fabric of the Lemon Tree Village Shops on Route 6A in Brewster. The former longtime owner of the Village Toy Store, Kielpinski has more recently taken over By-the-Bay Designs, a gift shop featuring local artist’s work located on the lower level of the sprawling woodstructured complex. But it is not just commerce that has kept him at Lemon Tree. It is also a deep sense of connection that pervades the marketplace. Over the years, he has spearheaded a number of charitable and community events at Lemon Tree Village shops. Partnering with other passionate store owners, Kielpinski devises not only fun events to draw customers, such as car shows, 56

CAPE COD MAGAZINE

craft fairs and a “Toast to Summer” wine and food tasting, but also develops projects to help those in need. He has supported animal charities, such as Paws for Survival and Wild Care, with in-store campaigns, and also sells A Baby Center’s cards (see main story) and the Brewster for the Holidays ornament every year. And starting each Thanksgiving weekend, Kielpinski places an enormous giftwrapped open topped box at the entrance to his store for a warm coat and winter clothing collection to benefit the clients of Lower Cape Outreach Council. “It fills up about four times each winter,” he says, “so I load up my pickup and drop them off to Lower Cape Outreach.” At the Village Toy Store, he initiated the Santa Shop toy drive that also supports

LCOC, a tradition that new owner Sherry Bergeron has embraced. Starting on Black Friday, whenever a customer buys a toy, Village Toy matches the dollar value with a toy for Lower Cape Outreach. Bergeron, who also runs a nonprofit that records local news for the blind, says that Lemon Tree feels like family to her and her husband. “There is so much warmth here. Anyone would do anything for you!” she says. I

t was just three weeks before her wedding when Jennifer Keller, then 30, learned she had Hodgkin’s lymphoma. By the end of 2015, after six months of chemotherapy, Keller said she was in “bad shape—mentally, physically and emotionally.” That’s when a colleague told her about Cape Wellness Collaborative, a local nonprofit organization that provides integrative therapies free of charge for people with cancer. After contacting CWC, she learned patients receive a $250 card to use toward therapies. Keller, now 33, says she received massage therapy and Reiki therapy, as well as nutritional counseling. “The whole experience is for mind, body and soul, which I think is so wonderful,” says Keller. “When you’re going through cancer treatment, you just don’t have the money to spend on yourself. With all the medical bills, you’re not able to say, ‘I’m going to spend $100 on myself today.’” Keller, who lives in Sandwich and works at Cape Cod Hospital as an ultrasound sonographer, started volunteering for the organization and is now the group’s volunteer coordinator. “I love that I can now give back to the organization that so greatly once helped me,” says Keller. She’s one of more than 250 people helped by CWC in the past two years. Keller says although her relapse rate is very high—she’s had Hodgkin’s lymphoma twice—she is currently in remission since her last stem cell transplant more than a year ago. Local musician Sarah Swain of Harwich founded CWC

CAPE COD MAGAZINE

when she saw a need to connect people going through cancer treatment with integrative practitioners, including acupuncturists, chiropractors and yoga instructors. “Considering our goal was 25 people the first year and 50 the second, it’s grown beyond what I could have imagined,” says Swain. “We don’t use the word ‘alternative’ because we don’t feel these therapies are an alternative to doctors,” says Swain. “I’ve always believed strongly in a holistic approach, and that it shouldn’t be an either/or or an us/them mindset as far as therapies go. “Cancer is very taxing financially on families. We wanted to make sure that everybody has access to these therapies, no matter what their financial status.” Swain uses her network of contacts to coordinate the Cape Cod Women’s Music Festival and Dancing With the Docs, the biggest fundraisers for CWC, which also receives funding from grants and donations. Dancing with the Docs pairs local physicians with expert dancers for a gala competition. The debut version raised more than $100,000 last March. Fundraisers in 2018 will include Dancing With the Docs on Feb. 3, Race to the Pint at Cape Cod Beer in April and the Cape Cod Women’s Music Festival May 12 at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis. Zen Den: Decoding Your Health Through DNA Tests BY BLAIR MILLER

A

state-of-the-art fitness and wellness facility located in the heart of Norwell, Zen Den has come a long way since opening its doors in the summer of 2016. Under the direction of co-owner and founder, Mary Kim-Garrity, the center offers a range of integrated medical and holistic services that help strengthen, condition and heal the body. Zen Den’s clients range from elite athletes who want to improve their physical performance on the field or the court, to patients suffering from chronic pain and cancer. While some people come to practice yoga or Pilates, others are attracted by the specialized therapeutic treatments such as massage, acupuncture, floatation therapy and infrared sauna. Most recently, the company launched Zen Den Medical and brought Dr. Dawna Jones onboard to be the medical director. “People get trapped into thinking that they either have to accomplish their medical goals holistically or traditionally,” says Jones, who prefers a more integrated approach. One of the ways Zen Den is pushing the envelope is by offering DNA tests, which are capable of detecting nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances, allergy sensitivities and more. “It provides a snapshot of your physiology,” says Kim-Garrity. The center has also begun offering several new therapeutic (and somewhat futuristic-sounding) treatments. Vitamin infusions, administered via IV, can be used to deliver nutrients directly into the bloodstream for optimal absorption. Cryogenic chamber therapy on the other hand—a treatment that involves briefly exposing a person’s body to freezing cold nitrogen gas—can be used to decrease inflammation on a cellular level (it’s said

Kids Who Exercise Daily Do Better on Tests BY LAURIE HIGGINS

W

hat if an hour-long game of tag each day not only made your children healthier, but also raised their test scores? New research suggests it can. A soon-to-be published study of school children who participated in an afterschool exercise program in Urbana, Illinois, showed noticeable changes after nine months of increased physical activity. For the study, one group of children played tag and other vigorous games for 70 minutes a day. The control group continued their normal activities. Neither group changed their diet and both groups were tested for fitness, body composition and cognitive skills before the program began. At the end of nine months, the children who exercised showed great improvement in their scores on computerized tests that measure how well a child pays attention and processes information. “An hour a day is a minimum recommendation,” said Hyannis cardiologist Elissa Thompson, who is also the medical director of the  Healthy Parks, Healthy People program, a partnership between Cape Cod National Seashore and Cape Cod Healthcare. “Kids should be getting as much exercise as they possibly can. They should be outside playing sports, doing activities or even just going to the beach.” It is not surprising that the children who exercised did better on tests, she said. When you increase your cardiac output, you increase blood circulation throughout the body, including the brain. Exercising your body actually exercises your brain, she said. Dr. Thompson’s best advice for parents is to get children off their devices and get them outside. 66

For parents who need ideas for how to get their children more active, Dr. Thompson offers the following suggestions: SIGN UP AS A FAMILY FOR HEALTHY PARKS, HEALTHY PEOPLE. Heathy Parks, Healthy People offers a walking program to encourage people to adopt a more active and healthier lifestyle. The program provides maps and guide to trails in the National Seashore and a passport booklet where you can record your progress. Medical staff from Cape Cod Healthcare are at the  base camp at the Salt Pond Visitors Center in Eastham from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Monday through Friday to measure participants’ weight, height, BMI and blood pressure and to offer heart health information. Dr. Thompson is at the base camp every Monday and Wednesday as well. HEAD TO THE BEACH. You can take a sunrise or sunset walk as a family or hike on the flats of Cape Cod Bay at low tide until you reach the water. A game of Frisbee or volleyball is fun and provides aerobic exercise. Searching for

hermit crabs or building a sand castle are great exercise activities for little ones. “There is nothing hard about getting to a beach on Cape Cod,” says Dr. Thompson. “If you are at the beach, you are going to automatically burn more calories.” GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED AT A COMMUNITY CENTER. The Hyannis Youth & Community Center  has a sports complex that includes ice skating rinks, an indoor walking track and a gymnasium. They also offer summer sports leagues for athletes from all towns on the Cape in hockey, basketball and volleyball. The  YMCA Cape Cod  in West Barnstable offers summer camps, family swim times in their pools, fitness classes, karate, golf and swimming lessons. Recreation departments in most towns on the Cape have summer and year-long activities for children and adults. BIKE RIDE AS A FAMILY ACTIVITY. long and runs from Dennis to Wellfleet with plenty of places to stop along the way to swim, picnic or explore. The Shining Sea Bikeway is a little over 10 miles long and runs from Falmouth to Woods Hole. The Cape Cod Canal Bikeway is about eight miles long and runs alongside the canal. Nickerson State Park  also has eight miles of interconnected bike or walking trails. The Cape Cod Provincelands Trail is five miles long, but you can add two miles if you follow the extensions to Herring Cove, Race Point and Bennet Pond. ENCOURAGE OLDFASHIONED GAMES YOU USED TO PLAY AFTER DINNER WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD. There is something deliciously fun about playing outside at dusk. Teach your children how to play kick-the-can or ghost in the graveyard. Encourage games like tag or kickball that get kids moving. Give them a canning jar and challenge them to catch fireflies. “Just get your kids outside. Any activity where they are not inside staring at a screen is healthy,” says Dr. Thompson. F

rom the very first night of Gardens Aglow, as he watches crowds of visitors stroll through lighted archways, roast marshmallows or visit Santa, director of horticulture Les Lutz—the mastermind behind the popular annual event—is already formulating new ideas for the following year. By the time summer comes, he and his crew have mapped out the lighting, completed walkthroughs of the gardens and decided which plants and trees will be lit. On a map of Heritage Museums & Gardens, Lutz and his crew sketch with colored pencils which color lights will go where, keeping track of how many lights per tree or shrub. This year, the amount of lights, if stretched from end to end, would total more than 12 miles. The crew begins installing lights the day after Labor Day. “Our tradition is that we always light the fringe tree first,” says Lutz, who has been with Heritage for six years. The fringe tree stands outside the Wing House, an administration building. Then it’s off to the ‘rhodies.’ “We wrap the lights around the trunks to highlight the natural form of each plant,” says Lutz. “When visitors come in the summer, they see the blooms, but this showcases the rest of the plant.” In this way, Lutz says, Gardens Aglow also gives plants that don’t get as much attention their chances to shine. In October, planning is taken to new heights. “We rent a boom lift for a week to do the high stuff, like hanging the snowflakes,” says Lutz. Twenty-eight lighted snowflakes, each about 4 to 6-1/2 feet in diameter, were created by students at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich, who worked from sketches provided by Heritage.

The Heritage Holiday Express train display in the special exhibits gallery features a serpentine train track supported by natural tree trunks—the setup of which takes an estimated 160 hours. They have to saw the base out of plywood, then cover it with moss for the train tracks to sit on. This year, there will be two sets of tracks. “One is above your head, and one will be at kid level that they can walk under,” says Lutz.

His other engineering feat—building bridges. This year, full-scale models of the George Washington Bridge and the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge will be on display. It takes an average of 350 hours to construct each bridge. New this year is a giant Lite-Brite in the special exhibits gallery, standing 14 feet tall and 16 feet wide and lit from the inside. Manager of facilities and securities John DeLellis says he ordered about 5,000 vintage Lite-Brite pegs on eBay. Who could come to Gardens Aglow and not roast marshmallows? Heritage provides the fire pits, marshmallows and roasting sticks. “You can’t buy marshmallow roasting sticks in November. We have to order them in June,” says Heather Mead, director of visitor engagement. So in June, Mead orders 13 cases of them, with 864 sticks in each case. That makes 11,232 marshmallow sticks. They start with a minimum of 250 bags of marshmallows, and with around 64 marshmallows per bag, well, that comes out to 16,000 marshmallows. For the very first time, Mrs. Claus will travel with Santa to Heritage. While Santa’s busy in the round barn taking requests from children, Mrs. Claus will be in her very own parlor in the special exhibits gallery. Interior designer Irina MacPhee, owner of Pastiche of Cape Cod, was instrumental in persuading Mrs. Claus to come. “One of Irina’s displays last year inspired us to create a space for Mrs. Claus,” says Mead. So MacPhee consulted with Santa’s elves and designed Mrs. Claus’s home in the special exhibits gallery to make her feel welcome. “It’ll be a magical experience for everyone to visit her here. I bet she’ll be making a gingerbread house 82

in her kitchen,” says MacPhee. The first holiday lights event held at Heritage was called Spectacle of Lights, which ran from 2003-2008. In 2009, Heritage put on a smaller, non-lighted holiday event, and in 2010 they began Gardens Aglow, making 2017 Heritage’s 14th year hosting a lighted holiday event. “It’s become part of our visitors’ holiday tradition,” says Amy Dean, director of marketing, communications and PR. “They have a ritual of coming to Gardens Aglow. When I talk to people, there’s a real emotional connection that they have to Heritage.” Gardens Aglow kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 24, the day after Thanksgiving, and continues through Dec. 30 at Heritage Museums & Gardens, 67 Grove St., Sandwich. Brazilian Flair in Orleans Whether you are a tradesman looking for a hearty breakfast or a gym-goer seeking a healthy smoothie after a workout, you can find what you need at Viv’s Kitchen. Located in the Orleans Marketplace on Route 6A, in the former Grand Old Deli, Mike and Vivian Dufresne’s eatery opened earlier this year and was an instant sucess. “Summer was really busy, more than we expected,” says Viv, whose Brazilian heritage inspires much of the menu. Mike grew up on Cape Cod, and he, Viv and their young son live in the same house in Eastham that once belonged to his parents. Vivian’s family emigrated from Brazil to Martha’s Vineyard when she was eight years old and the couple led “parallel lives” until finally crossing paths in Boston. After years toiling at other people’s restaurants, Mike and Viv, encouraged by friends and colleagues, took the plunge and launched Viv’s Kitchen in May. Open every day for breakfast and lunch, the restaurant offers American fare made from scratch. Mike cooks a top round every day for their steak and cheese subs as well as the Brazilian specialties that Vivian grew up with. Viv’s mother and a friend come in each morning to make items like Marmitas, a plate of shrimp, pork, chicken or steak with rice and beans, or a fish stew known as Moqueca. Fred and Steven, who owned a vacation home in Provincetown for 13 years prior to opening Strangers & Saints, have always been passionate about food and throwing parties. The idea of opening a restaurant seemed like a natural step for the couple, who split their time between New York City and Provincetown before settling permanently on the tip of the Cape five years ago. “We decided to sell our apartment and leave corporate America,” says Fred, senior vice president for WebMD for 16 years. He attended culinary school at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, in the early ’90s, and prior to being recruited to start WebMD, he worked in cookbook development for Simon & Schuster. In 2015, they bought it. “We spent a year writing a detailed plan describing what we wanted to do,” says Fred. “It just felt right.” Construction for their new restaurant began in January 2016. “While our contractors, Meg and Mo (Meg Steward and Maureen Wilson) were building, I was at home tasting recipes,” laughs Fred. Strangers & Saints is doing something right. Soon after opening, Zagat named it one of the Top 10 must-try new restaurants on the Cape. While the Mediterraneaninfluenced menu features glints of the exotic, it also includes delicious pizza. Lobster pizza, anyone? It’s topped with roasted corn, roasted garlic, basil and a red sauce. Chef Bethany Gregory, known for her ham and cheese croquettes, also serves up several vegan options. Bartender Billy Weston created an entire craft cocktail program, featuring drinks such as the Wampanoag Gimlet, with vodka, lime and basil; and the Matriarch Billington, named after the matriarch of a notoriously ill-behaved family during the time of the Mayflower, made with tequila and curacao. The décor in this cozy yet lively restaurant is reminiscent of old sailing ships. “We wanted leather, brass and wood,” says Fred. “We wanted to take this 1850s captain’s house and bring it back to life.” They hired world-renowned designer Ken Fulk to design the interior. “At first, we figured he’s way too big for us—he does projects all over the world,” says Fred, with an excited tone in his voice. “He didn’t need to do it. But he loves P’town and he loves restoring.” Provincetown landscape painter John Dowd painted the mural inside, to the delight of the owners. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, John Dowd is going to paint our mural?’” says Fred. He pauses for a second, then apologizes for getting a little choked up as he recounts the story. “I’m just really grateful that everyone came together like they did to work on the project. A Zest For Life Start the day off right—better yet, make the most of every moment—at Zest Cafe & Juice Bar in Dennis Village. With a focus on organic fruits and vegetables—and only the freshest ingredients—Zest has something for everyone, including vegan and gluten-free options. “We’re trying to give people all the nutrients your body craves,” says manager Taylor Drew, who made a name for herself at Lemon Press on Nantucket before moving to the mainland last winter. This summer, her first customers lined up—literally zigzagging through Zest— to grab juices, smoothies, baked goods and paninis before heading to the beach. Now Drew’s focus is on the locals with made-to-order items to be enjoyed in the café’s front, back and “swag” rooms, which are all Wi-Fi-equipped and decorated with staff-made artwork. “We’ve really become like a family here,” says Drew, who credits her multitalented employees and loyal customer base with Zest’s success. hen a big storm hits Cape Cod, photographer Marcy Ford and her husband, Jason, pack up their vehicle and drive around Chatham to watch the surf and capture images in the fresh snow. This herring gull, hanging with a couple of his friends in front of Chatham Light, immediately caught Ford’s eye. They were unfazed by the weather, she says, as the snow fell to the ground. Fortunately for us, Ford was there at the right moment to capture this postcardperfect image last winter.
