Best of British Clarinet Vol. 2 Murray Khouri: clarinet/John McCabe: piano/Peter Pettinger: piano STANFORD: Allegro Moderato • Caoine • Allegretto Grazioso • HOWELLS: Con Moto • Allegro ritmico • BENJAMIN: Le Tombeau de Ravel

All three composers featured on this CD taught composition at the Royal College of Music. Stanford’s Sonata, completed in late 1911, reflects his use of integrating qualities of Irish music into his German style, with the spacing between the two instruments creating a simple balance. Howells’ Sonata also shows diversity, with a focus on expression and an unsettling poetic nature. Benjamin’s elegant style is portrayed beautifully in his piece, with a subtle yet large range of musical color highlighting the character of his style.

Roger SMALLEY Accord

Daniel Herscovitch: piano/Erzsebet Marosszeky: piano FORMOSA: Pour les vingt doigts • LUMSDAINE: Flights • SMALLEY: Accord Section Ia–Vb

CD: CUU 1078 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25

Formosa composed Pour les vingt doigts while studying in Rome in 1983, in order to perform the piece in Warsaw (which ultimately did not take place). A few years later, it was performed at Sydney Opera House. Flights’ simple imagery of a river and its wildlife uses structural metaphors to relate its events to the harmony used, with each piano reflecting the other. Smalley’s Accord is a continuous 43-minute piece falling into five larger sections, which are then each divided further into two unequal segments that seek to highlight different features of the same basic material.
