How to Retire in Cabo II. By:

Hi the last issue, I mentioned safety, shopping, and health care so now here are some thoughts about Lifestyle Living in Cabo; what to consider when retiring here. As we move into our ‘golden years’, we, we require daily comforts including our food, drink, and activities. Our diet is more regimented and we have to be careful about what we eat or what we imbibe, agreed! Let’s mention food – we may think we have iron stomachs and say “of course I can eat the green salsa no problem and sure, the more chillies the better!” Oops, the next day can be tricky as we experience the occasional reminder of just what we ingested the night before. Everything in moderation is okay and hopefully, some of us have learned our personal level of moderation. Now, drinks... cervezas fria, wonderful wines and fresh margaritas! The idea is to try the numerous varieties and keep hydrated with lots of water (yes, ice is considered water). Tequila is the ‘new’ scotch and is perfectly acceptable as an after-dinner liquor to be sipped, not a shooter with a piece of worm in the bottom of the glass. Take a tequila seminar and learn the history of the families and the factories of Jalisco, the only area where

official agave tequila is produced (just like the champagne from Champagne, France). Lifestyle considerations include exercise and socializing...walks on the beach, golf (get out of the cart once in awhile), sunset strolls in golden rays as el Sol reaches the horizon. Romance abounds when another peaceful day in Cabo slides to a close. Remember to get “out-and-about” (yes, that’s a Canadian term) and meet friends for a campfire or barbeque dinner, ride an ATV, kayak to the Arch and what the heck, dance the Macarena for the first time again! Boy, these words go by almost as fast as a sunny day full of fun and adventure, I will close this edition with these thoughts: Lifestyle is unique to everyone and is what you create personally, spending special time with someone special is more enjoyable when you do so in a happy and healthy environment. Tips on leasing a piece of paradise!

So, you’ve finally made the impossibly difficult decision to put your sweaters into storage and move down to paradise… namely, Los Cabos! Step two: find somewhere to live. Here are a few tips to help you find your way in the local long-term rental market: Use a rental agent or real estate professional: Using a reputable MLS affiliated rental or real estate agent is not only FREE to you, but will also help to protect your interests. Your agent should also be able to determine which developments will work best for you and your specific needs, as well as provide extraneous (yet very important) information on the many other aspects of relocating to a new area. Time your search properly: The majority of homeowners will not reserve their rental for any longer than 3-4 weeks. Start looking for preliminary development/area information as early as you like. Start touring specific properties no more than 45 days out from your desired occupancy date, but also with a big enough window to keep you from choosing a property out of desperation. Never rent “sight unseen”: Regardless of how nice the pictures look, it is far better to spend a few extra dollars on a hotel than to be miserable in your new home until your lease is up. READ your lease agreement BEFORE you sign it: Lease agreements exist for the 10% of situations in which disputes arise, wait until a problem arises to review your lease and it will be TOO LATE! Ensure that everything you’ve agreed to is clearly stated in your lease agreement. Your lease agreement should be provided in Spanish AND English (unless you speak Spanish fluently) to be legal. Be prepared when you arrive: If you’re flying into Los Cabos and taking occupancy immediately, you’ll want everything to go smoothly. US cheques usually won’t fly as payment, so remember to bring enough cash with you to cover the 1st rent payment or wire the funds before you leave. Also be sure to bring any requested ID’s.

Medical Tourism and Healthcare for kids in Los Cabos As Baby Boomers age and become “Baby Zoomers”, they realize life decisions need to be made sooner rather than later; many involve one of today’s fastest growing economies ... Medical Tourism.

Many initiatives are underway in Los Cabos to attract people here for medical reasons including diagnosis, treatments, procedures and surgeries, many of which involve cutting-edge technologies which may or may not yet be available in the United States or Canada. Also, several organizations in Los Cabos are building medical facilities for locals, especially children and the under-privileged. Medical Tourism is an international business concept with countries such as India, Turkey, Costa Rica and Southeast Asia offering services far away from the medical industry in North America. The public health system in Canada provides funding for medical care but often wait times are too long for suffering patients. When one’s health is an issue, cost and distance are minor considerations in order to achieve well-being. Mexican centers like Tijuana and Guadalajara have provided medical services for years but now people are looking to Los Cabos for a more comfortable experience. Costs of up to 50% less are available from doctors, dentists, specialists and practitioners who have received degrees and training internationally...some even make house calls! Insurance coverage may be obtained making it convenient and economical to come to Los Cabos for the care they need. One organization involved in this growing market is Frontier Doctors which recently introduced operations in Los Cabos to bring people from the United States for many types of treatments and procedures while offering a ‘vacation tour’ for the whole family. Frontier Doctors is associated with doctors, laboratories, pharmacies and medical providers that meet the high standards of a demanding clientele. The company has determined that many Baja doctors are highly trained and very skilled in their selected specialties with a high level of commitment, integrity and patient consideration. Doctor certifications are from top medical universities in Mexico, US and Europe and state-of-the-art equipment and technology make diagnosis and treatment of diseases and ailments the best available. Frontier Doctors is an example of people doing well for others by providing top-notch health care, improving quality of life and introducing thousands of new visitors to Los Cabos, many of whom may eventually choose to make their new home here. Los Cabos is the only area in Mexico that does not provide cancer care for children. The Los Cabos Children’s Foundation and Amigos de los Ninos (“Friends of the Children”) have affiliations with St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Avera McKennan Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, American Airlines, Teleton and others to send children to the States for bone marrow transplants, heart surgeries, cancer treatments and other life-saving treatments. The Children’s Medical Campus will include state-of-the-art technology and equipment, the Spirit of Joy cancer treatment center, the Josefina Blood Bank, family accommodations, training classrooms, a custom wheelchair assembly section, a children’s hospital and many other benefits.
