pring has arrived, summer’s in the air and my favourite beauty season is here! It’s time to delight in peachy blush, shimmering bronze and sheer foundation. Out with winter braids and in with surf spray, bedhead hair and bronzed skin. New trends to try and old favourites to revive - the season’s ahead and it’s full of promise, I for one can’t wait!
Whatever your plans for the months ahead, now’s the time to take stock, make Pinterest boards and start planning your summer look. If you’re having a beauty clearout then our feature on p.10 will help you decide what to throw and what to keep. If the thought of bare skin fills you with dread then take a look at our Spring Skincare SOS on p.14 (& don’t miss our Anti-Ageing Secret Weapons on p.20!). One thing I’ll a few of my definitely change is my favourite things fragrance - my beloved La Petite Robe Noire by Guerlain that saw me through winter is now almost spritzed out. It’s light enough for warmer months, but I still like a change every season. We’ve made some suggestions for seasonal fragrance on p.10, right now Lancome’s La Vie Est Belle is top of my list... At weekends I like to switch my foundation for a BB or CC cream (plus a little concealer for tricky bits), but in warmer months my daily foundation of choice is Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua - the coverage is light and the texture divine, with SPF15 for added protection. I’m also excited this year to be trying new TanOrganic, the world’s first all-natural self-tanning range. Plus there are plenty of haircare launches to come, including Redken Beach Envy and Matrix SugarShine.

Achieving the perfect fake tan can be tricky, so let’s point you in the right direction and guide you to the best home tanning products - prepare to tan like a Pro! Before choosing a fake tan product ask yourself 2 questions: 1. What kind of tan do I need? e.g. a fix for pasty legs, a gentle glow or all-over serious colour. 2. Which Is…? Basically colour in a bottle. Smoothed
Which Is…? Like the classic fake tan, these need time to develop and won’t wash off. However things have come a long way since you walked around the house naked for 8 hours scared to touch anything - these options dry fast and develop fast. Good For? Parties, balls, short breaks - any occasion where you want a proper tan but don’t want to invest much time.
over skin it gives immediate colour but washes off with soap (hoorah, no mitts or gloves!) All you need is a few minutes of drying time and you’re good to go. Good For? Office parties, last minute dates, unexpected swimming and “my legs look TERRIBLE” moments. Always have some in your cupboard! Pros: Super-fast to apply, instant colour, quick drying. Can usually be layered to get deeper colour. Needs soap to remove so no rain-related disasters. Cons: Very temporary, needs reapplication. Looks horrible going down the drain. How To Apply: Bare hands are fine but a mitt or gloves are useful. Use quick, long strokes and blend by eye.
Pros: Easy to apply, quick drying. Some brands such as Fake Bake are coloured so you can see where you’re applying the product. Won’t wash off even with soap so great for any situation. Cons: Take time to develop, need care when applying (you need mitts or gloves and must protect eyebrows/ hairline). A little preparation is needed too, especially exfoliation and moisturiser around dry areas. How To Apply: Definitely use a mitt and/or gloves! Apply in long, sweeping movements for best results.

THE CLASSIC - FULL TAN Which Is…? The classic fake tan, these need time to develop and won’t wash off. May take several hours to develop and will need proper preparation for great results. However they’re top of the list if you’re going on holiday or need a serious, all-over tan that lasts a solid week before reapplication. Pros: Usually coloured so you can see where you’re applying product. Won’t wash off even with soap and can usually be topped up with further applications a week or so later to keep the tan going. Cons: Take time to develop, need proper care when applying (mitts or gloves and you must protect eyebrows/hairline). In some cases you can’t get dressed for a short while after application. Preparation is needed for best results - exfoliate and moisturise, preferably the day before. How To Apply: Application in the usual way with a tanning mitt or gloves. PREPARATION Aside from fake tan products, there are a host of complementary items to help you get the look. The key to achieving a great tan is of course preparation - the more you prep the skin, the better the result. If time allows then exfoliate and moisturise skin thoroughly to ensure an even glow. If you’re pressed for time then take a quick shower and rub over the skin with a loofah or shower sponge. While the skin is still warm apply a layer of moisturiser. Allow it to be absorbed then apply your tanning product.

Use It or Lose It? A recent survey suggests women keep makeup for an average of 6 years. If (like us!) you do the same, here’s the low-down on when - and why - you should have a clear out. They don’t work as well... It’s true, even makeup you’ve opened but never used (why?!) will stop working as well after a set time. Foundation will oxidise and change colour, mascara will dry out due to the high water content and sunscreen will stop being as effective. So if it’s still sealed give it to a friend, otherwise make a mental note not to buy the product again and put it in the bin! Bacteria Pesky bacteria will insist on growing just about anywhere. Products with a high water content will fare the worst (foundation, liquid liner etc.) but pressed powders don’t escape either.

The jar symbol on packaging is a guide to how long the product should last, but use common sense - if something smells wrong (usually mascara) or looks off, don’t risk it.

It’s a no brainer but remember to clean your face and hands before applying makeup.

Wash brushes at least once or twice a month (daily if you have acne) and use sanitiser spray in between washes (if you don’t have professional brush shampoo use baby shampoo instead). Put reusable sponges into a wash bag and pop them in the washer.

Use cotton wool buds or brush applicators to apply lipstick or concealer rather than touching makeup straight to the skin.

Store pressed powder applicators with the used side face up.

Summer Skincare SOS With summer on the horizon, prep skin now for lighter makeup and (dare we suggest) bare skin...

Deep moisturise - flaky, dry skin can’t be hidden under BB cream or a tan! A light day cream is perfect under makeup but slather on a deep, nourishing night balm to repair and soothe. At the very least, make sure skin is fully moisturised every morning to avoid that tight, painful feeling that leads to premature lines and excess oil production.

Wear foundation or CC cream - two reasons for this, firstly you’ll look nice (win!) and secondly you’ll have a physical barrier between you and the elements (win!) Yes we did say ‘elements’, there’s always a chance of wind, rain and showers and pollution is ever-present. Using a CC cream will also add hydration, a must if anti-ageing is a concern. For extra skin armour use a barrier cream, especially if you prefer little or no makeup.

Change your handwash - choose something more soothing and look for ingredients such as Shea Butter. While you’re there, pop a travel moisturiser in your bag for dry hands and lips - or noses that have suffered with bouts of flu or hayfever.

Step away from the soap! Unless it’s a facial soap never ever ever use soap on your face, even if you suffer from acne. Soap strips the skin of natural oils and changes its PH, leading to problems down the line. While it’s ok for body skin, soap is too harsh for the face and will actually encourage excess sebum. Cleansing milk is a great choice at this time of year as it offers additional hydration, just look out for one that addresses your skin type.

Have a clear out - anyone can suffer from blemishes, blackheads or milia. Excess sugar, alcohol and late nights all affect the body’s balance, while dry skin can lead to excess oil production and blocked pores. Take time to assess your skin: weekly exfoliation and drinking more water may be all you need, but for congested skin turn to an acid based product to peel away dead layers and remove impurities

Indulge - pamper skin with face masks, oils and nourishing serums and give your skin some ‘me’ time. Don’t forget the body though, especially the neck and decollétage - fake tan fans take note! Now the weather is warmer, turn down the shower temperature ( just a little!) to protect body skin and apply a thick body butter or oil over wet skin to lock in moisture.

THE
DO’s & DON’Ts of SELF-TANNING DO APPLY TAN AFTER A HOT SHOWER OR BATH The skin is naturally moist due to heat bringing moisture to the skin’s surface - the tanning agent works best when this happens.
DON’T OVER-EXFOLIATE!
Although you should exfoliate 24 hours before tanning, don’t overdo it as you can break down the barrier function of the skin and cause a reaction. Maximum exfoliation is twice a week. Any more has reverse negative actions on the skin.
DO MOISTURISE DRY AREAS
Make sure potential problem areas (‘PPAs’) are fully moisturised before tanning ie hands, feet, knees and ankles. After tanning, use an oil rather than a cream daily as creams and lotions contain water that evaporates, whereas oils penetrate. This will help your tan last longer and you’ll achieve the perfect fade off!
DON’T APPLY TO HANDS OR FEET…
Work the excess product from the arms onto the hands, work the excess tan from the legs onto the feet. Never apply product directly to either area. It’s always easier to go darker than lighter!
DO USE A TANNING MITT
A tanning mitt is inexpensive but ensures a smooth finish. Start from the face, neck and chest and work down your body in stages, leaving your hands and feet till last - and don’t over-rubthe product.
DON’T FORGET YOUR TAN IS THERE!
Don’t exercise for 24 hours after tanning. Don’t wash your hands for at least 8 hours (otherwise you’ll get the white hands+brown arms look). Don’t shave the day after tanning - if you REALLY must then use an electric shaver to avoid removing your tan.
DO SEAL YOUR PORES
When tanning your face, use an ice cube to seal the pores first - just rub it over your skin.
DON’T PICK A TAN THAT’S TOO DARK
You want a tan to pop your complexion with colour, not overpower it. Choose a tan that suits your skin tone and remember: it’s easier to go darker than lighter!
