The Taste of South Cobb will be held Saturday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, Mableton. The event will benefit C.A.M.P., a food pantry serving over 800 hundred families per month with groceries, clothing and utility assistance, as well as Amateur Advocate Association, a group responsible for the positive guidance of youth and community. The event also is being supported by the South Cobb Arts Alliance, whose mission of is to build our community by encouraging appreciation and active participation in the visual arts, performing arts and local heritage. Admission is free, although there may be additional cost associated with enjoying the food options provided at the various booths. Attendees can also enjoy a cook-off

with public safety officers, a kids activity area, and a line-up of various acts and performances. For more information and tickets please go to www.tasteofsouthcobb.com. At the day-long event from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., WellStar Cobb Hospital’s Executive Chef Eric Spivey will demonstrate how farm fresh foods promote better health. Using farm fresh items, he will create delicious and healthy menus for both the home and the hospital. All of Spivey’s fresh ingredients-vegetables, chicken, beef or seafood are chosen to improve the nutritional, physical and mental health of each patient. Spivey began exclusively using farm fresh vegetables in WellStar Cobb Hospital’s patients’ meals in 2009 with the intention of nourishing the patients naturally. Understanding that a better quality

SOUTH COBB BUSINESSES HONOR PUBLIC SAFETY

The South Cobb division of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce honored police, fire and EMS officers with the South Cobb Council Public Safety Award of Merit at the October meeting. Among those honored were: Precinct 2 Cobb Police - Officers Chris Hollingsworth and Steve Nolan Working in partnership to eradicate methamphetamine epidemic from South Cobb, Cobb Police Officers Chris Hollingsworth and Steve Nolan have created an intelligence database used by Precinct 2 officers. Nicknamed the “precinct 2 Meth Task Force” by their fellow officers. Last year, Nolan and Hollingsworth targeted a house on Veterans Memorial suspected as a drug sales location. In June, the two officers were serving an arrest warrant on Finch Road and found the suspect hiding in the attic. The rest also resulted in several drugs and firearms charges. Puckett EMS Paramedic Eric Baker Paramedic Eric Baker works the night shift for Puckett EMS. In February, he helped save. A powder Springs man having a massive heart attack. Baker resuscitated the victim and continued working with him, trip to the emergency room, working with the ER doctors and nurses. The man survived and has now returned home. Cobb Fire Department - Eng. Shawn Ravish Engineer Shawn Ravish works full-

time at Cobb Fire Department Station 22 as well as being a master sergeant in the United States Air Force Reserve. He is a founding member of the Metro Atlanta fire for fighters conference committee and has worked to grow the conference and national standing. He is an instructor at the Cobb Fire Department Recruit Academy and is in line for promotion to lieutenant. Cobb Sheriff’s Office -- Deputies Carrie Brown, Andrew Butsko and William Gooch Three Cobb County Sheriff’s deputies were honored for saving a woman’s life when they found her unconscious after using drugs. The deputies were serving a criminal warrant when they found the woman incapacitated. EMS transferred her to WellStar Cobb hospital and then a longterm rehabilitation facility. Although the suspect will eventually end up in the Cobb jail, the deputies reacted quickly to a lifethreatening situation that saved her life. Powder Springs Powder Springs Police Sgt. Keith Moore was honored for his actions in a dispute domestic dispute at a gas station on Powder Springs Road. Sgt. Moore was the first on the scene and saw a man dragging a woman out of the building by her hair. In attempting to arrest the man Sgt. Moore and the suspect struggled and it took three additional officers and the use of a taser to subdue him.

The importance of shopping local isn’t limited to the summer produce markets. Festivals like the Christmas House Arts and Crafts Show offer wonderful items handmade by talented craftspeople right in your own neighborhoods. For almost 30 years the Christmas House Arts & Crafts Show has offered a 10-day shopping experience like no other. Volunteers and staff transform the Mable House Arts Center into a beautifully decorated “department store” full of carefully chosen, handmade products perfect for friends and loved ones on your gift list. The 2013 Christmas House runs December 6 - 15, and hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Sunday 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. The Mable House Arts Center is located at 5239 Floyd Road in Mableton. “Like” us on Facebook for a preview of what’s to come. A tradition for many shoppers during the Christmas House is to have lunch in Mable’s Tea Room, which serves homemade soups and desserts, salads and sandwiches. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 6 - 14, closed on Sundays. Proceeds from the Tea Room benefit the Art Education Support Program of the South Cobb Arts Alliance for local students, and local organizations.
