The Taste of South Cobb will be held Saturday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, Mableton.

The event will benefit C.A.M.P., a food pantry serving over 800 hundred families per month with groceries, clothing and utility assistance, as well as Amateur Advocate Association, a group responsible for the positive guidance of youth and community. The event also is being supported by the South Cobb Arts Alliance, whose mission of is to build our community by encouraging appreciation and active participation in the visual arts, performing arts and local heritage. Admission is free, although there may be additional cost associated with enjoying the food options provided at the various booths.

At the day-long event from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., WellStar Cobb Hospital’s Executive Chef Eric Spivey will demonstrate how farm fresh foods promote better health.

Using farm fresh items, he will create delicious and healthy menus for both the home and the hospital.

All of Spivey’s fresh ingredients-vegetables, chicken, beef or seafood are chosen to improve the nutritional, physical and mental health of each patient.

Spivey began exclusively using farm fresh vegetables in WellStar Cobb Hospital’s patients’ meals in 2009 with the intention of nourishing the patients naturally. Understanding that a better quality

Public Safety officers -- police, fire and EMS -- show off their awards at the South Cobb Division Council meeting of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce in October.

SOUTH COBB BUSINESSES HONOR PUBLIC SAFETY

The South Cobb division of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce honored police, fire and EMS officers with the South Cobb Council Public Safety Award of Merit at the October meeting.

Among those honored were: Precinct 2 Cobb Police - Officers Chris Hollingsworth and Steve Nolan Working in partnership to eradicate methamphetamine epidemic from South Cobb, Cobb Police Officers Chris Hollingsworth and Steve Nolan have created an intelligence database used by Precinct 2 officers. Nicknamed the “precinct 2 Meth Task Force” by their fellow officers. Last year, Nolan and Hollingsworth targeted a house on Veterans Memorial suspected as a drug sales location. In June, the two officers were serving an arrest warrant on Finch Road and found the suspect hiding in the attic. The rest also resulted in several drugs and firearms charges.

Puckett EMS Paramedic Eric Baker Paramedic Eric Baker works the night shift for Puckett EMS. In February, he helped save. A powder Springs man having a massive heart attack. Baker resuscitated the victim and continued working with him, trip to the emergency room, working with the ER doctors and nurses. The man survived and has now returned home.

Cobb Fire Department - Eng. Shawn Ravish Engineer Shawn Ravish works full-

time at Cobb Fire Department Station 22 as well as being a master sergeant in the United States Air Force Reserve. He is a founding member of the Metro Atlanta fire for fighters conference committee and has worked to grow the conference and national standing. He is an instructor at the Cobb Fire Department Recruit Academy and is in line for promotion to lieutenant.

Cobb Sheriff’s Office -- Deputies Carrie Brown, Andrew Butsko and William Gooch Three Cobb County Sheriff’s deputies were honored for saving a woman’s life when they found her unconscious after using drugs. The deputies were serving a criminal warrant when they found the woman incapacitated. EMS transferred her to WellStar Cobb hospital and then a longterm rehabilitation facility. Although the suspect will eventually end up in the Cobb jail, the deputies reacted quickly to a lifethreatening situation that saved her life.

Powder Springs Powder Springs Police Sgt. Keith Moore was honored for his actions in a dispute domestic dispute at a gas station on Powder Springs Road. Sgt. Moore was the first on the scene and saw a man dragging a woman out of the building by her hair.

In attempting to arrest the man Sgt. Moore and the suspect struggled and it took three additional officers and the use of a taser to subdue him.

Comments By Cathy PUTTING THE EMPHASIS ON THE GIVING IN THANKSGIVING

By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher There is something so comforting about Thanksgiving traditions, having family and friends gathered around a table laden with food, saying grace, and remembering our blessings. There is conversation, food, the Macy’s parade, and for many (excluding me) football games.

However, for many in our community, Thanksgiving is a day just like any other, with too little food, hunger, loneliness, or depression. For still others, it’s a day when they can give back, sharing their food and their time to make this a better holiday for those who otherwise wouldn’t have a celebration.

Each Thanksgiving, the Cobb Community Services Center (CSB) provides food boxes for its mental health clients and their families. The CSB depends on the community for support to provide food and time for sorting and packing the food boxes. It’s a wonderful activity for a business, a school class, a scout troop, a Sunday School class, a civic club, or an individual. Whether you would like to provide a complete dinner, or just a can or two, the food will be appreciated and your contribution valued. Grocery store gift cards, to purchase turkeys and hams, are also needed There are several organizations in Cobb County doing the same thing for those who might be homeless or families in need.

The Center for Family Resources, C.A.M.P. and MUST Ministries are perhaps the best known of these groups. They have provided meals for thousands of hungry families and individuals throughout the years and deserve praise for the work that they do.

Unfortunately, many with mental health issues are often overlooked unless someone with a diagnosis appears in the news in a negative way. But often individuals with a mental health diagnosis can continue to work, to support themselves and their families, aided by good medical and family support.

But the clients of the CSB often need some extra support from the community, especially at the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. “The vast majority of the clients we serve are either disabled or the working poor and have limited financial resources. Holiday food donations are a great way to say I care. I hope people will consider donating food to assist those facing

struggles during the Thanksgiving season,” said Cobb CSB Executive Director Tod Citron.

Each year it seems the needs go up and donations go down. There are many already donating and offering to help but more help is needed to make Thanksgiving more than just another day for the CSB clients.

Donations are needed by Friday, November 22, to allow volunteers time for basket preparation. Donations can be delivered to several locations in the county or pick-up can be arranged. I hope many of my readers will join me in sharing this Thanksgiving with the clients of the Cobb Community Services Board or with one of the other Cobb County agencies who feed the hungry.

WHITEFIELD ACADEMY CELEBRATES HISTORY

Whitefield Academy’s board of trustees, founding members and leadership dedicated Whitefield’s Founders Hall on Oct. 25, to pay tribute to those who laid its cornerstones. Countless members of the Whitefield community celebrated the school’s history, growth, and future direction.

“Founders Hall serves as a daily reminder and testimony to the living and active Jesus,” said Whitefield’s headmaster, Dr. Kevin Bracher. “As the founders followed Him while making Whitefield Academy a reality, they demonstrated courage, generosity, and faithfulness.”

During the official dedication ceremony, Bracher, Chuck Johnston - founding headmaster, and David Jones - founding board chair, noted Founders Hall as a symbol of the courage and faith exemplified by Whitefield Academy’s founders. The three leaders also announced the dedication of its band room to founding member and long-time arts director, Stacy Quiros.

“Today marks an important milestone for us,” said Tom Wood - director of advancement, Whitefield. “It is a proof point that Whitefield’s founding members and current leadership team has built a solid and lasting foundation for future generations to come.”

Whitefield Academy was formed in 1996 through a partnership of The Cranmer School and Mount Vernon Christian Academy. On September 10, 1996, the partnership culminated into a joint resolution to combine the boards, leadership, resources and support of the two schools.

Chuck Johnston of The Cranmer School was named headmaster, and David Jones,

of Mount Vernon Christian Academy, was named chairman of the Whitefield Board of Trustees. Other founding board members include Betsy Akers, Jack Camarda, John Dail, David A. USE DENTAL BENEFITS OR LOSE THEM This is the time of year that those people lucky enough to have dental insurance and/or medical savings accounts should look to see what is left of their benefits. Most dental insurance is based on a calendar year basis, so when Jan1st comes this year’s benefits are over and next year’s start. ANNUAL MABLE HOUSE STORYTELLING FESTIVAL

Despite showers, hundreds turned out for the annual Storytelling Festival at the Mable House in October. The event featured story telling, hayrides, children craft projects, blacksmith, weaver, tours of the historic house, puppet shows, old fashion games, a petting zoo and pony rides.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater South Cobb was recently organized and sanctioned by Kiwanis International on Sept.

Darlene Duke, Executive Director of Christian Aid Mission Partnership, was the honored recipient of the Church Women United Human Rights Award in a celebration at Cascade Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta on Oct. 4. The Cobb unit of CWU recognized Duke for her leadership service to the underprivileged in her community.

The Church Women United Human Rights Celebration was started in 2006 in the hopes of bringing to light those who have and are working towards equality for all. Awards have honored amazing women and men whose work has made an impact on their community or on the world at large. CWU takes this time to remember that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms…without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status” (Excerpt taken from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, written by the UN in 1948.) This has been the message of CWU since its beginnings in 1941, and will continue to serve as one of the pillars that supports and drives their movement.

CHURCH PRESENTS ‘CHILDREN’S LETTERS TO GOD’ NOV. 15-16

The Alpha Omega Drama ministry of Bethany United Methodist Church will be performing the musical, “Children’s Letters to God” on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The show is based on the best selling book of the same name and is appropriate for all ages.

The cast features young people ranging in ages from 8 to 13 representing several churches in the community. They ask God the hard questions that sometimes adults may not be willing or are afraid to ask! The show will be presented in Bethany UMC’s, Lacy Hall, located at 760 Hurt Road, Smyrna.

South Cobb Lions Members Ronald Kirby and Waymon Story were presented a Melvin Jones Award for their service to the Austell, Mableton and Greater South Cobb County Area. Melvin Jones’ Award was named in honor of the founder of Lions Clubs International, who was born 1879, in Arizona, and was reared in the Chicago area.

During his time as a businessman, his interest was to have other businessmen to put their talents to work improving their communities. These men came together in Chicago on June 7, 1917 and Lions Clubs International was born. The motto of Lions is “WE SERVE.” Lion Waymon Story joined South Cobb Lions in July 2003. Lion Waymon, other than being a Lion, is known as husband of Joyce, father of two grown children, and grandfather of five. He is a

member of First Baptist Church, Mableton; retired from IBM and drove bus as tour guide. Waymon has served in the following offices of the South Cobb Lions Club: 2004 Lion Tamer, 2005 3rd Vice President, 2006 1st Vice President, 2007 President and 2010-2013 Treasurer.

Lion Ronald Kirby joined South Cobb Lions Club in June 2004. Lion Ronald is married to Carol, father of two grown children and a grandfather. He is a member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church, an active deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Ron is employed by Delta Air Lines.

Both of these men are very active Lions - participating in the annual BBQ, Pecan Sales and White Cane Day Fund Raisers. They were presented a Melvin Jones Award for their services to the South Cobb Community through the Lions Club.

FIVE MYTHS ABOUT FOOT CARE

By Dr. Evan Brody “Don’t cross your eyes, they’ll stay that way!”

Old wives’ tales and myths like that example are fun to laugh at. We believed them as children. “Step on a crack and you’ll break your mother’s back.” But there are other myths that are no laughing matter, especially when they involve your health.

From bunions to broken toes, foot and ankle surgeon Evan Brody DPM, FACFAS, has heard it all. Dr. Brody treats patients at his office in Kennesaw and at facilities all over the Greater Atlanta Area via his Senior Mobile Care Division. He shares five myths about foot care and the realities behind them.

Myth: Cutting a notch (a “V”) in a toenail will relieve the pain of ingrown toenails.

Reality: When a toenail is ingrown, the nail curves downward and grows into the skin. Cutting a “V” in the toenail does not affect its growth. New nail growth will continue to curve downward. Cutting a “V” may actually cause more problems and is painful in many cases.

Myth: My foot or ankle can’t be broken if I can walk on it.

Reality: It’s entirely possible to walk on a foot or ankle with a broken bone. “It depends on your threshold for pain, as well as the severity of the injury,” says Brody.

But it’s not a smart idea. Walking with a broken bone can cause further damage.

Myth: Shoes cause bunions.

Reality: Bunions are most often caused by an inherited faulty mechanical structure of the foot. It is not the bunion itself that is inherited, but certain foot types make a person prone to developing a bunion. While wearing shoes that crowd the toes together can, over time, make bunions more painful, shoes themselves do not cause bunions.

Although some treatments can ease the pain of bunions, only surgery can correct the deformity.

Myth: A doctor can’t fix a broken toe.

Reality: Nineteen of the 26 bones in the foot are toe bones.

“What I tell patients is, there are things we can do to make a broken toe heal better and prevent problems later on, like arthritis or toe deformities,” Brody says.

Broken toes that aren’t treated correctly can also make walking and wearing shoes difficult. A foot and ankle surgeon will x-ray the toe to learn more about the fracture. If the broken toe is out of alignment, the surgeon may have to insert a pin,

screw or plate to reposition the bone.

Myth: Corns have roots.

Reality: A corn is a small build-up of skin caused by friction. Brody says many corns result from a hammertoe deformity, where the toe knuckle rubs against the shoe. The only way to eliminate these corns is to surgically correct the hammertoe condition.

Unlike a callus, a corn has a central core of hard material. But corns do not have roots. Attempting to cut off a corn or applying medicated corn pads can lead to serious infection or even amputation. A foot and ankle surgeon can safely evaluate and treat corns and the conditions contributing to them.

SOUTH COBB STUDENTS ATTEND 2013 LSAMP STEM CONFERENCE

South Cobb High School students were invited to attend the 2013 LSAMP STEM conference by Kennesaw State University on Oct. 11 in Marietta.

Students heard keynote speaker, Dr. Jimmy Davis, Jr., speak about the importance of STEM in our everyday lives. His speech further delved into the importance of highlighting STEM education in order fill gaps in our new, developing industries.

Breakout sessions followed the keynote speaker and South Cobb students participated in the high school workshop.

Engineering of underwater robots was the focus of the high school workshop. This provided an environment for students to use problem-based learning in order solve a real-world problem. Students did this by identifying a problem, taking inventory of actual equipment and supplies, and designing a prototype using the equipment provided. Each student had to design their own robot and then present it to the rest of his or her group. Once all students presented, the group voted for the best most practical design to share with the entire workshop.

The conference field trip concluded with a luncheon at which Dr. Cheryl Davenport Dozier, President of Savannah State University, spoke about the importance of STEM as it relates to our economy. She spoke about marketability in all areas and the importance of acquiring and practicing proper oral and writing skills in addition to STEM fields in order to be successful in any career.

WELLSTAR PLANS SMYRNA/VININGS HEALTH PARK

WellStar Health System has announced plans to move forward with planning for a new health park on 25 acres of property just south of Smyrna. The area borders I285 to the east, Atlanta Road on the south and Cumberland Parkway on the north.

The WellStar Vinings Health Park, a new 162,000 square foot health park in the Smyrna/Vinings area, is scheduled to break ground in 2014 and begin seeing patients in late 2015/early 2016.

“WellStar is committed to the health of Cobb County residents and is pleased to offer this convenient, comprehensive and high-quality care to our community,” said Chris Kane, WellStar senior vice president for strategic business development. The purchase of this property ideally positions

WellStar to address the needs of the residents in this rapidly growing area. We have a noteworthy history in Cobb County but our Health Park investments are evidence of our optimism about the future.”

With outpatient healthcare expected to grow 30% over the next five years, WellStar health parks have been developed to deliver outpatient care in community-based facilities. WellStar health parks, currently open in Acworth and under construction in East Cobb, are tailored to provide innovative coordinated care to the local community.
