Redevelopment plans for South Cobb got a boost recently as the county approved issuance of the $10 million South Cobb Redevelopment Authority Revenue Bonds and results of a branding study were presented. The revenue bonds will be utilized for infrastructure improvements and to purchase properties inside the 2,800-acre Six Flags Special Services Tax District for redevelopment purposes. The property owners within the District will be assessed an additional 3.5 mills on their property to fund the annual debt service of the revenue bonds. The District encompasses the southern tip of the county to just north of Interstate 20. The authority has approved a list of projects that can be funded through a special tax district for the Six Flags Area of South Cobb by May 2018. The purpose of these projects is to help the community by investing in ways to improve the sense-ofplace and business climate in this area of Cobb County. Redevelopment will include property acquisition, property abatement, relocation assistance, land preparation and property disposition. Improvements at off ramps of I-20 by April 2017; Landscape improvements Six Flags Drive from Riverside Parkway to Lee Industrial by December 2018; Landscape improvements Six Flags Parkway Six Flags Over GA to Lee Industrial by December 2018. Other projects that may be pursued if money is available include Lightning Improvements Six Flags Drive from Riverside Parkway to Lee Industrial and Six Flags Parkway Six Flags Over GA to Lee Industrial. In a presentation at the August meeting, Charleston-based Slant Media, Inc. gave the results of the branding survey and offered several message topics. The majority of positive feedback was focused on the narrative of ‘Welcoming communities, endless opportunities.’” The survey found a common theme of diversity as a positive highlight by residents and non-residents. But, the perception of arts and culture varied with redients noting pride in the arts and culture scene while non-residnets cited a lack therof. The branding study and related marketing work is not paid out of the bond funds. The survey measured quality of life, potential, proximity and amenities. Overall, the respondents agreed that the area is surrounded by possibilities and opportunities. The message “Conveniently located, South Cobb is a welcoming community with unlimited potential for families, activities and business,” was shortened to a theme of “Welcoming Communities, Endless Opportunities.”

PLANNING FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS TAKES TIME By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher Let’s talk about Christmas. Yes, I know it’s not yet Halloween. And I know there are many people who complain about decorations in stores in October for a December holiday. But bear with me. There is method to my madness. I want to discuss gifts that go beyond the ordinary; gifts that need creativity and planning. As a procrastinator I can tell all the reasons for delaying. But Christmas will be here sooner than expected and for handmade, original gifts, the time to begin is now. One of the best gifts we gave to our two older granddaughters a few years ago was an original story about Toby the Cat. I wrote the story and Allan created the graphics and it almost didn’t happen in time for Christmas. We were finishing it right before we left to visit each family. Thus, I know personally that it’s not too early to start planning those special gifts. If I were more talented with sewing, crocheting, or knitting, I can imagine many gifts I could create: quilts, blankets, doll clothes, crocheted animals and so on. But, despite my mother trying to teach me to crochet and several years of high school home economics, I have no skills in this area. I love finding crystal platters at estate sales, consignment stores and antique shops, perfect for gifting homemade baked goods. The crystal is much better than plastic or paper, inexpensive to buy and a container that doesn’t have to be returned. Alas, baking cookies is not my talent either. But these special trays also serve well for a fruit platter or homemade fudge, gifts which I can prepare. Creating a photo album takes time but will be enjoyed for generations. My mother created such an album for me with pictures of her and my dad from their early married days and later pictures of my childhood. It is a treasure that I cherish. Yes, it’s early to be decorating for Christmas. And, yes, it’s too early to begin baking. I know at our house baked goods would be eaten well before Christmas. But it’s not too early to begin planning or putting talents to work. What is your talent? Is it baking, sewing, painting, pottery, wood

working, writing, photography, music? Homemade Christmas gifts aren’t just for adults. It’s a great time to begin teaching children about giving and creating gifts. And for those folks who have everything and need nothing, why not the gift of time? Helping someone with a household project, or giving the gift of time with a visit, or a dinner can be wonderful gifts. One Christmas, our son-in-law gave us the gift of his talents by installing a light under kitchen cabinets and a new fan in the powder room. These are gifts we’re still enjoying and thanking him for. Why not choose one or two special people to give the gift of yourself. Personally, I’m going to accept my challenge in one of these ways and not wait until December to begin.

Dr. Chris Wizner are seeking the mayor’s post. Tom Bevirt and Patrick Bordelon Sr. are vieing for the At Large Post 1 seat. In the At Large Post 2 race Henry L. Lust, Ashanti Norton and Patricia A. Candidates who placed an ad were invited to submit an article about themselves.

Transylvania mania comes to Atlanta Lyric Theatre, as the metro area’s only professional musical theatre company presents Mel Brooks’ hilarious musical comedy YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Oct. 23 – Nov. 8, at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre (548 S. Marietta Pkwy., Marietta). Based on the Oscar-nominated smash hit 1974 film, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is the wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic from the comic genius of Mel Brooks. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN opened on Broadway on Nov. 8, 2007 at the Hilton Theatre. Googie Uterhardt stars as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein with Alison Wilhoit as Inga. Austin Tijerina and Marti Melle Lindstrom play the iconic roles of Igor and Frau Blucher. Blake Burgess plays The Monster. They will be joined by Alan Kilpatrick as Inspector Kemp and Harold, the blind hermit, and Mary Nye Bennett as Frederick’s fiancée Elizabeth. The company also includes Jason Cohen, Fenner Eaddy, Brittany Ellis, Arielle Geller, Avery Gillham, Joe Harris, Jenna Jackson, Imani Joseph, AJ Klopach, Pablina Lopez, Barbara Macko, J. Koby Parker, Becky Simmons, Chase Todd, and Casy Walker.

Hello, I’m Dr. Chris Wizner. I’m a Family Physician and have lived in the Douglas/Powder Springs area almost my entire life. I graduated from Emory University and Mercer School of Medicine, followed by Family Medicine Residency training at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia. I then returned to Powder Springs to open a medical practice, later joining the Tanner Medical Group with a practice currently in Paulding County. I live in Powder Springs with my wife, Penny and two children, William and Kellie and attend Powder Springs First United Methodist Church. I have been involved in the City of Powder Springs for the past 20 years, starting as a member of the DDA, then moving on to the Planning and Zoning Commission for 15 years, serving as Chairman for six of those years. In an effort to get more involved with the City and community, I then ran for City Council and have served as a City Council member for the past 4 years. I have now decided to take the next step and run for the position of Mayor. My goal is to keep Powder Springs a great place for our citizens and visitors to live, work and play.

We believe in a personal approach to patient care.

Throughout the school year, McEachern High School students are studying the jewelry industry and earning valuable industry certification through specialized visual arts and marketing courses. The Cobb County School District supports this initiative at McEachern as a way to increase post-graduate opportunities for students. During first semester, a jewelrymaking course is being taught by Danielle Mege, a visual arts teacher. Students are learning about the science of gems through geology and gemology, as well as designing and constructing jewelry of their own. During second semester, a marketing course, led by Bryan Jacobsen, will expose students to additional aspects of the industry. The third-level marketing course will involve coursework and certification in retail jewelry sales. Both teachers have earned their Diamond Council of America (DCA) certifications. Local jewelry professionals will be featured as guest speakers throughout the year and will share their knowledge, experience, insights and enthusiasm. “With the help of the McEachern Endowment Fund, our vision of having a jewelry program has become a reality,” says Principal Regina Montgomery. “The students are very excited about the program, and I envision great things coming to them as a result.” The program is the first of its kind in the district and is unique because it uses a series of courses from the DCA to enhance established curriculum. Students who

complete these visual arts and marketing courses will be registered in a national database for employment in the jewelry industry. Industry certification can help students obtain part-time jobs during college, and long-range career opportunities as well. DCA offers a referral service to students who successfully complete the program, providing an introductory link to thousands of DCA-member jewelry stores across the United States. “We are truly thrilled to introduce McEachern High School students to our industry,” said Terry W. Chandler, DCA President and CEO. “We see great potential benefits for both the students and the jewelry businesses for which they may work.”

In a historic moment for the brand new H.A.V.E.N. Academy at Sky View, a group of concerned parents, teachers, administrators and school district officials gathered together on Sept. 30, to charter the school’s very first PTA. Officers include: Holli Cash, President (Parent); Jeanette Gall, Vice President (Staff); Jean Brady, Treasurer (Staff) and Rachel Dorce, Secretary (Parent). “We are extremely excited to have chartered the H.A.V.E.N. at Sky View PTA,” said the academy principal, Dr. Isaac Kelly. “ It is our goal to be a local and state leader with respect to an organized council of parents and staff totally focused on school-family engagement for students with disabilities. We are excited to charter and look forward to increasing our membership around the entire Cobb and Douglas Counties since we service students from all 114 CCSD schools, 11 MCS schools, and 35 DCSS schools.” Dr. Kelly also issued this invitation to the public: “Remember, you do not have to be a staff member or have a student in H.A.V.E.N. or with a disability to be an advocate, supporter, and PTA member.”

Pebblebrook Performing Arts’ Ryan Wolpert, a 16-year-old junior, has won a prestigious scholarship award for his outstanding singing and musical talent. Wolpert won the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. Wolpert was nominated by his teacher, Dr. Katie Woolf, Director of Vocal & Choral Music at the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts at Pebblebrook High School. Wolpert was eligible for the award because he is a part of the CCCEPA Chamber Chorus, selected to perform in “From the Top,” the hit NPR and PBS program. The Chorus’ performance will be broadcast on Atlanta’s public radio, WABE, on Monday, Nov. 9. Woolf says Wolpert went through an intensive application process by students from around the globe before recently being named winner. “The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation gives out approximately 20 Young Artist Awards per year to young musicians who are on From the Top so this, like getting selected to perform on the show, is a highly selective honor!” Wolpert is a junior at Pebblebrook’s performing arts academy, and is a vocal major, with a minor in drama minor. He has won $10,000 to be used towards musical studies while he’s preparing to study music in college. He plans to put Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Scholarship towards voice lessons and tuition for a 2016 summer program. Woolf says “Ryan is an outstanding young tenor who has already shown us great promise as a singer as well as true passion for his art: He truly embodies everything the Jack Kent Cooke foundation stands for. He is a pleasure to work with in class every day and we cannot wait to see where he will go next!”

NO PET LEFT BEHIND AT GARRETT

Garrett Middle School believes in No Pet being Left Behind… and it is so dedicated, it has a new club whose focus is matching shelter pets with a loving forever home. Counselor and club organizer, Joy Chanin, says “the club’s focus is to educate students and the community and support organizations working toward the better treatment and care of animals. Our mission statement is “Educating Our Community about the Care of Animals So No Pet Is Left Behind (NPLB)”.” Chanin says Garrett MS’ NPLB Club meets on the first and third Thursday morning of each month at 8 a.m. Students recently took a trip to the Cobb County animal shelter, and on the trip, student volunteers got a tour of the facility and to meet some of the pets needing homes. Students were then treated to a lunch at the Presbyterian Village sponsored by the South Cobb Rotary Club. The students wrapped up the day at the Animal Health Center vet clinic to see how pets are given medical treatment, check-ups and care. This club is far from the only community- and service leadership work the students at Garrett MS are doing.
