Courage with Caution for 2014...

By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall What can we expect in 2014? More market volatility, higher interest rates, increasing inflation, falling saving rates, mortgage costs rising? Nobody knows, but what we can all do is be prepared.

A leading think tank predicts the UK economy will grow by 2% in 2014 which is fantastic news if you are able to take advantage of it, otherwise it could mean rising interest rates on borrowing and higher inflation. If your finances are not correctly aligned, not only will you miss out on the positives, such as growth on your investments, you will find your safe investments such as bonds could fall dramatically in value very quickly. At the same time your long term borrowing, such as mortgages, will rise quickly as the lenders will look to increase their fixed rate and tracker deals long before Governor Mark Carney raises the base rate from its historic low. Areas to look at in early 2014 should be: Investments These can include Pensions and lump sum Investments, as in order to take full advantage of the expected growth you should ensure you have a fully diversified risk rated portfolio which can tap in to the rise in equities both here and abroad. You should also maintain a degree of caution, as we are not only susceptible to the weaker European markets such as Spain and Greece, but also the potential debt problem that still haunts the USA. Savings Some would argue growth and rising interest rates can only be a good thing for savers, and they would be right, but there are an awful lot of savers with too much on deposit, losing real value when inflation is considered. It will be many years before savings rates keep pace with inflation, so if you are one of those people who have too much sat in cash, maybe 2014 is the year to consider re-balancing your cash requirement and move some funds into a risk

Mortgages Long before the base rate rises, lenders are likely to start to increase their fixed rate deals, so maybe 2014 is the time to secure a rate you are comfortable with and take the worry out of future rises. The Help to Buy scheme has certainly started to help the housing market, and get activity, but of more interest to me is the types of interest rates these mortgages are trading at, as I feel they are indicative of where lenders see rates going in the next few years, and they are considerably higher than those available to regular borrowers today.

Equity Release The story with equity release is much the same as with regular mortgages, in so much as rates are expected to rise, so again, maybe 2014 is the year to consider raising capital in this way. Since most if not all equity release contracts fix the interest rate for life, taking advantage before a possible rate rise could prove prudent.

Retirement Income Rising interest rates and falling bond prices could mean improving annuity rates; however history tells us any real improvement in annuity rates takes years to filter through so don’t bank on any rise soon. Annuities continue to offer income at historically low rates so you must ensure you shop around, using your right to utilise your open market option, a qualified independent financial adviser will help you seek out the most appropriate and best annuity out there.

There is every reason to be optimistic about 2014 after the previous five years, we deserve some good news, but as with anything, a word of caution; the value of your Investments may drop as well as rise, so maybe the best course of action is take advice, diversify, and most important of all, be prepared, as those that fail to plan, plan to fail. investments, pensions, income and borrowing.

lights switch on roundup Ledbury Saturday 30th November

Malvern Saturday 30th November Entertainment from 10am, Parade and Lights Switch on at 5pm The 2013 Great Malvern Lights Switch On promises music and street entertainment around town all day. The Dyson Perrins Concert Band and groups from the Malvern Area Music Centre will be providing music along with choirs and a string quartet. There will be veteran cars to see and morris dancing from the Faithful City Bagmen.

A Christmas Arts and Food Market will be open from 10.30am in the grounds of the Priory, while Malvern Library has children’s rides outside, while inside there’s free dance workshops for children, a ballet performance and children’s craft workshops. You can visit Father Christmas in the library’s very own Christmas Grotto.

At the Community Hospital in Malvern Link, Malvern Chase Brass Band will be performing, while Great Malvern Priory hosts a day of music, children’s activities and entertainment.

A parade through the town centre culminates in the switch-on of Malvern’s Christmas Lights between 4.45pm and 5pm, hosted by Sue Holderness and Olivia Birchenough, stars of this year’s pantomime at Malvern Theatres.

Entertainment from 1pm, Lights Switch on at 4.30pm Enjoy a Christmas market, brass band, choir and Father Christmas’ Grotto at the annual lights switch on in Ledbury.

Father Christmas arrives in town at 1pm, and you can visit him in his grotto during the afternoon (at the Town Council Offices, Church Street) During the afternoon there will be free rides around town for children, on Trigger the Train.

There will also be children’s entertainment including face painting and balloon modelling at the Royal British Legion Club on Church Street.

The Lights Switch On itself takes place at 4.30pm, led by the Mayor on High Street by the Market House. The entertainment then continues with carol singing, led by Ledbury Community Choir accompanied by a brass band.

Parrys of Malvern Forty years in retail is quite an achievement and this will be the fortieth Christmas of trading for Parrys, on Church Street in the heart of Malvern.

To mark the anniversary, Parrys has commissioned some jewellery of its own. ‘There’s a ruby and diamond pendant on a gold chain, with matching stud earrings’ says David Siviter.

More and more customers are coming in for diamond jewellery, and once they find Parrys they become loyal customers. ‘I like to think we look after our customers and treat them well’ says David. As well as an extensive range of watches and jewellery, this year the shop will be stocking Hush, a range of modern, silver jewellery with a pink colour palette. ‘Its high quality and something we’re happy to stock, for this, our fortieth Christmas in business’ says David.

the winner of the Open Air Photographic Exhibition The winner of Malvern’s first Outdoor Photographic Exhibition is this amazing photograph of a fox, taken by Carl Day.

A series of pictures were on display in the town centre through the summer and autumn, with the public encouraged to vote for their favourite via mobile phone.

very last moment I peered around the side of my lens at him, he spotted me, and trotted away. I think part of the photo’s success is the fact that it’s a natural shot and not a set-up.’

‘I am flattered’ says Carl ‘and quite surprised to win as I was up against some really good images.

The photograph was almost an accident. I was in a farmer’s field trying to photograph a hen harrier which had been spotted nearby. The temperature at the time was minus 16 Celsius so as you can imagine, I couldn’t stay outdoors for very long. I had concealed myself using camouflage and I was lying on the ground just as the sun was rising. Suddenly the fox appeared. He was oblivious to my presence so I took a snap. He heard the click of the camera’s shutter, looked around and then carried on towards me! At the

The exhibition, called ‘In and Around Malvern’ was organised by the Beacon Camera Club and Pulse Great Malvern which promotes events around the town centre. Anna Brook from Pulse Malvern helped to organise it. ‘The reaction to the exhibition has been fantastic. The Beacon Camera gained many new members as a result, and we received many kind comments from local traders as well as visitors to the town and local people. In fact the reaction was so positive, we are delighted that Malvern Hills District Council will allow us to keep the exhibition in place until early January. People are already asking if we can arrange another exhibition, so we are looking at the possibilities.’

Another photo exhibition called ‘Winter Wonderland’ will be taking place in local shops & businesses around Malvern town centre throughout the festive season.

www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 Now that the winter is upon us and the days are shorter, its time to think about bringing some greenery and flowers inside.

At Christmas we can bring some of the garden into the house with Holly, Ivy, Mistletoe and other evergreens to decorate the house. Use Rosehips and Pyracantha berries if there are none on the Holly. Don’t go taking it from the countryside unless you have the permission of the landowner; even better, buy your seasonal greenery at the Mistletoe Fair in Colwall on December 14th outside the village library!

If you are unsure of what to buy friends and relatives for Christmas, indoor pot plants are inexpensive and always appreciated, and they often go on flowering for months afterwards. As with outdoor species, plant hunters have combed the world to find new and exotic subjects to suit our indoor environments.

Flowering plants suitable for warm dry houses include Poinsettia, African Violet, Begonia, Capsicum, Cacti, Stephanotis, Streptocarpus.

For a cooler atmosphere, try Azaleas, Cyclamen, Christmas Cacti, Primroses, Chrysanthemum, and Jasmine.

If you have a humid bathroom or kitchen why not try some Ferns or Cymbidiums. Planted bowls make a pretty centre piece. Use ivy or ferns for structure and plant bulbs such as Hyacinths, Narcissi and other flowering plants such as primroses or mini cyclamen. These can be taken out and replaced with fresh ones as the flowers go over. Most bulbs and primroses will grow in the garden, so pick a frost free day and plant them out.

Watering is a key problem with caring for house plants, most die through over watering. Find out about your plant, where it comes from, what conditions it grows in and try to replicate them.

The label will give you information on care but this is usually very basic. When you are choosing pot plants in the garden centre look at the base of the plant and check that the stems are strong and there is no mould at the base of the flowers.

As a general rule, indoor plants are better watered from below. In winter most indoor plants will not be growing much so give them a little water on a regular basis. This can be increased in the summer. If you live in a hot, dry house use a mister to spray some water over the leaves regularly.

Scientific studies have proved that people who are surrounded with indoor greenery and flowers are more positive and happier.

Meanwhile, there are always jobs to do outside, so wrap up warm and put the wellies on!

• Cut back any perennials and divide if necessary.

• Prune Apple and Pear trees, shrubs, etc.

• Dig over the veg garden, adding soil improver or rotted manure.

• Clean and disinfect the greenhouse.

• Watch out for mice damage in stored veg bulbs and seeds.

• Order seeds of flowering annuals and veg for sowing under cover in February and March.

All About...

Colwall Ale House Colwall Ale House is a beautiful black and white building, still in regular use by the community after almost five hundred years. A week of events is planned for next year, and Leslie Hitchen who chairs the committee that looks after it tells us more.

What do we know about the history of the building?

The Ale House is a black and white timbered building which belongs to St James the Great Church in Colwall and sits in the chuchyard by the East gate. It was built in the early 1530s during the reign of Henry VIII, and the date has been confirmed by dendrochronology, which involves taking samples of the original timber and comparing them to historic records of tree growth.

Where does the reference to ale in its name come from?

The building was originally used to sell ale to raise funds for the Church. A gathering at the Church Ale House would have been the equivalent of a modern day village fete. However, the Bishop felt too much ale was being consumed and this led to the Ale House being sold by the Church in 1614 when it then became an alms house for the poor of the Parish. It was last inhabited in the 1930s and then fell into disrepair.

When Carl Attwood became Rector it was being used as a garden shed. He set about raising the necessary funds to restore it , which was no mean task, and this was completed in 1989 when the Ale House became the Church Hall for St James the Great.

What kinds of events take place at the Ale House these days?

Nowadays, the Ale House is used for a wide variety of events. It seats about 60 people and is currently being used for community groups, club meetings and classes such as yoga. It also hosts annual dinners, birthday and anniversary parties, childrens’ parties and wedding receptions. Just recently there has been a very successful series of travel talks called “the Ale House Adventures” which were open to anyone. The themes ranged from adventures with horses in Mongolia to time spent in the Antarctic with the British Antarctic Survey. Its been so well received we are planning more such talks in the Spring.

And can you tell us more about your plans for 2014?

Next year, between June 21st and 29th there is going to be an Ale House Festival. We will be hosting a week of events centred on the Ale House and celebrating the life of the village both now and through the ages. There will be an exciting and varied programme of events and, of course, ale! We will have more information to come in the weeks ahead.

Apart from booking fees, how do you pay to maintain the building?

The Ale House 100 Club is a monthly draw to raise funds to help with the upkeep of this historic building. For just £10 there are 10 draws with a 1st prize of £15 and a 2nd prize of £5. The draws start at the end of November and run through to August. All the proceeds are used for the maintenance of the Ale House.

Makes 12 money bags Ready in 90 minutes including cooling time

• 1 small onion finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic crushed • 100g chestnut mushrooms, sliced • 125g pearled spelt • 1 litre of vegetable stock • 175ml of local cider • 2 handfuls of spinach • salt and black pepper to taste • 6 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil

For this recipes you can use some nice local oil and cider. Serve as a main or a starter for a great Christmas dinner!

1. Make the vegetable stock and place on a low heat.

2. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a large pan. Sauté the onion, garlic and mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms are browned.

3. Add the spelt and stir until coated in oil, then add the cider, cook for 5 minutes. Add a ladleful of stock and stir. Add the spinach.

4. Cook on a medium heat, stirring frequently, adding more stock as required.

5. When the spelt is cooked, remove the pan from the heat, and season with salt and pepper. Allow to cool for about 30 minutes.

To make the money bags Preheat the oven to 200°/Gas 6, grease a baking tray.

Cut a packet of filo pastry into 15cm squares.

Take two squares of pastry and brush with oil, place on top of each other brush with oil and place a spoonful of the mixture in the centre. Pull the edges of the filo up to the middle, twist to seal then place on baking tray. Repeat to make additional money bags until the mixture is used up.

Bake for 20 minutes until golden.

eternal student

By Satya Robyn from Malvern “Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s selfesteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily.” ~ Thomas Szasz I’ve always been terrible at history. Last week, as part of a Buddhist study programme, I had to write an essay about what was happening around the world in 500 C.E. I didn’t even know what C. E. meant. I didn’t know where to start. I felt very stupid. I struggled for hours, getting more and more frustrated.

And then something happened. I started to be interested in what I was reading. I realised that the facts I was finding out were about real human beings, living their lives so long ago. A small spark of interest in history was born!

Learning isn’t always this painful. But, as Szasz’s quote points out, learning often includes letting go of something we thought we knew. Most of us like to know who we are, where we are and what

we’re doing. Acknowledging that we don’t know can take a little bit of courage.

This courage is necessary if we’re going to continue learning. And being open to learning brings us many treasures. We don’t just find out new information which will help us make better decisions and live more skilfully. We remind ourselves of how little we really know about other people and other things, and we become less judgemental. We get to know others and the world more intimately, and we feel closer to them and to it. We experience wonder, and awe…

Here are a few tips to help you reawaken your hunger for learning.

One: Prioritise learning If you’re busy, it might help to consciously make space for learning. Do some reading for twenty minutes every lunch time, or book a class at your local college. Spend an hour every Wednesday working at your online writing class. Meet with a friend every month and talk through how you’re getting on with your work–life balance. Put time for learning in your diary, and honour it.

Two: Follow your curiosity Curiosity is the foundation of all learning. You can practice curiosity at any time; waiting in the queue at the bus stop, watching a documentary or listening to your own thoughts. You can be curious about facts and figures, or about how people (including yourself) tick. Ask yourself questions like ‘why are things the way they are?’, ‘what’s underneath?’ or ‘how does this fit with what I already know?’. Indulge your curiosity; use Google, ask people questions or go to the library.

Three: Be interested when your feelings are stirred up If you’d like to learn more about yourself, pay attention to whenever you feel angry, frustrated, resentful, betrayed etc. These feelings usually reveal something about ourselves as well as about the other person. If we can think about our own part in what’s happened, we’ll often discover a wounded part of ourselves and we can take responsibility for this. We can then take steps to look after ourselves better next time, e.g. by setting better boundaries for ourselves or by being more honest about what we need.

Four: Enjoy yourself!

Although it can sometimes make us vulnerable, learning can also be a lot of fun. It gives us a chance to try out new things, find things out about ourselves and the world, and to play. Sign up for a flamenco class, borrow some books about pop art, or go on a walk with a book for identifying wild flowers. Take notice of what the world has to offer you.

2014: Get fit with Fiesta Fit Club Anna Downs says ‘Fiesta Fit Club delivers exercises classes specifically designed for women in and around the Malvern area. My idea is to provide an environment where women can achieve their health and fitness goals outside of a gym environment.

It was born from my own experience of wanting to find a female-centric fitness class after having my children. I desperately needed to find a supportive environment and a knowledgeable instructor but could not afford or justify hiring a personal trainer. Having previously experienced my fair share of body issues I understand how to devise classes that specifically tackle issues faced by women wanting to improve the way they feel about their bodies.

When women attend a class, they will receive a very detailed health questionnaire. I will also do a non-invasive check of their tummy muscles and ask about pelvic floor function as this helps to build a picture of which exercises will benefit them and those best avoided. I have had some fabulous results from women who have wanted to address their tummy muscle separation and stress incontinence. All of my prescribed exercises and choreography are put together with building strong cores and pelvic floors in mind.

2013 in Pictures – For the whole of this year, we’ve been taking a photograph in our area every day and posting it on our Facebook Page and our website at www.allaboutmalvernhills.com.

Its been a lot of work, and most importantly, always carrying a camera with you in case the sun comes out! The resulting collection of pictures shows a beautiful array of views of our area, from snowy scenes in January, through to spring blossom and summer sunshine.

Many of the photos were taken on the spur of the moment, like the time we snapped two women filling bottles at Hayslad Spout on the West Malvern Road (9th July), one of the warmest days of the year.

Some of the best photographs were taken by making an effort to get out at the start, or the very end of the day. An evening walk on the Hills above West Malvern on 6th July gave us a highly atmospheric photograph of a family watching the sun go down. West Malvern features again on 4th September, with the sky cast a deep red and mauve by the sunset above Elim College.

The photographs gained a healthy following on our Facebook page, with some of the photos proving very popular. One of the most ‘liked’ pictures is from 5th September, showing the Hills silhouetted against the sunrise, with mist sitting in the valley in front of them.

Having to take a photo every day sometimes meant heading out out on the Hills in pretty terrible weather. Springtime this year saw many blustery, showery days when you could either roast in the sun or be soaked by the rain. The photograph on 26th October was taken from the top of Raggedstone Hill in wind so strong it was hard to keep the camera steady! But the view of the landscape, spotlit by sunshine with angry clouds above, made the effort worthwhile.

The collection of photographs we’ve assembled during 2013 make us proud of our area, and also realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world.
