4. happy families Happy Families is a play with moments of great fun as well as poignancy. Presented by The Colwall Players, it tells the story of John from the age of 9, through the laughter and tears of family life until he graduates as a drama teacher.

It is being performed at Colwall Village Hall from 27th to 29th October at 7.30pm.

5. SMALL ART FOR ACORNS Small Art for Acorns is an annual exhibition and auction of donated small artwork at blue-ginger Gallery in Cradley. All proceeds will be donated to Acorns Children’s Hospice.

WEST FEST 2017 West Malvern’s annual community festival West Fest is looking for a new clutch of enthusiastic local people to inject further vitality and ideas to develop it into 2017 and beyond.

Whatever your skills and talents, there’s a chance to find out more when West Fest hosts an open event at 8pm on 6th October at The Brewers Arms, West Malvern.

Grants to this year’s supported organisations will be awarded, and some of the current team will talk about the history and development of the festival. There is an open invitation to join in to make West Fest 2017 even better, so please do come along to find out how you can contribute.

Now entering its twelfth successful year, West Fest celebrates local talent across a range of forms - music, art, dance, craft, food, sport - for the benefit of thousands on the day and, through its profits, provides thousands of pounds to local charities and organisations to enhance their work in the community. The festival is organised by a yearround core team and brought to life on the day by many dozens of local volunteers and participants.

LIGHT UP A LIFE Colwall Rotary Club is once again hosting ‘Light Up a Life’ Christmas trees outside the Malvern Hills Hotel and the Colwall Coffee Lounge. Each light on a tree is dedicated to a loved one – it could be in memoriam, to celebrate the gift of friendship or to mark a special occasion, such as a birth or an anniversary. Money raised from donations helps the work of St Michael’s Hospice at Bartestree near Hereford.

All About...

Salters Hill charity buddies Salters Hill is a charity providing care, support and opportunities for people with disabilities. Based close to Ledbury, Salters Hill needs volunteers to act as buddies for the people they support. Laura Evans who is the Volunteer Co-ordinator tells us more.

What does a Buddy do?

A Buddy at Salter’s Hill acts as a befriender to enable people we support to take part in activities within their local community. We are currently looking for people who would like to act as both ‘Work-place’ buddies, supporting people as they start new jobs and ‘Activity’ buddies who take part in leisure activities.

Spending time with a volunteer in this way can increase the social circle and interaction of the people we support and either enable them to take part in activities which they enjoy doing alongside another person or learn new skills. The volunteer can also enjoy the same benefits by getting involved in this role.

Are there any real life examples you can share with us of where the buddy scheme has been a success?

Earlier in the year one of the people we support found paid employment for the first time as a result of their involvement in our employability scheme. This was in a greengrocers close to where they lived and before starting their new job, this individual was matched with one of our workplace buddies.

The volunteer buddy’s role was to support this individual through the first seven weeks of starting the job by helping them to understand the tasks they needed to do each week, build a relationship with their new employer and solve any practical issues which arose. By the end of the seven week period, the volunteer was able to step back and the person we support now carries out their job independently.

How much of a commitment is the buddy scheme to a volunteer?

Workplace buddies will normally work with someone who is starting a new job for the first seven to eight weeks of them settling in to their

new role. This tends to be for three hours on the same day each week. Activity buddies will spend time with someone over a longer period and they might take part in a particular activity (eg. attending a gym class) or meet up on a more informal basis (eg. taking a walk in the local area). Days and times can be discussed between the volunteer and the person being supported and altered over time to suit both parties.

Is there any training or support?

Due to the nature of the work that we do, all volunteers will be asked to complete Safeguarding training along with any other training which is relevant to the role they have applied for. Prior to starting their role they will receive an induction and on-going support from our Volunteer Co-ordinator. If the volunteer role involves spending time alone with somebody in their home, the volunteer will be asked to undergo a period of observation and feedback and additional training to ensure that the match is suitable for both them and the person they will be buddying.

Living together - by Lucy Webley Question: My partner and I are not married but we have lived together for 20 years and have two young children. We are now separating – what are my rights as a mother?

There is no specific law in England and Wales yet that governs what happens to cohabiting couples who separate, so we have to look at other solutions.

Your primary concern will probably be the family home. If it is owned in your joint names, then the assumption is that you will own it equally (in the absence of other agreements). Unless one of you can afford to buy the other’s share, the house may need to be sold and the proceeds divided equally.

If the house is in your partner’s sole name and you made no significant contribution to increase its value (in excess of mortgage payments or household bills), you may not be entitled to anything. We would have to try to find proof of any discussions or promises made in the past to help establish that you own a share. Another avenue to explore as you have young children, is whether it is possible for you to stay in the house until they leave school, by which time the house would go back to your partner.

A parent who is not living with their children is obliged to pay child support. This can be agreed between you or else through the Child Maintenance Service. As you are not married, currently you have no rights to claim for any financial support for yourself nor make a claim on your partner’s pension.

As you can see, it is important to get specialist advice and consider all options. If you are considering living with someone, or buying a property together, it is worthwhile considering a ‘living together agreement’ to set your financial arrangements and what would happen if you were to separate.

friends of master's house The Friends of the Master’s House group was formed in 2008 as plans developed for the restoration of the Grade 2* 15th Century building. They have become more involved as a support group since the building re-opened last year as a Library, Customer Services Centre and offices.

he building serves many purposes and includes the John Masefield Archive, Victoria County History as well as a centre for Age UK locally and The Ledbury Poetry Festival. The beautiful Panelled Room is used an exhibition space as well as a meeting room.

There has been a huge increase in library usage and membership, as well as visitors, since the opening in March 2015.

There is a programme of events for the whole community including those aimed specifically at children, many of which are run as drop-in sessions and are free. Details of all events are available in the activities and events calendar, a copy of which can be picked up from the Master’s House during Library hours. This can also be found on the Master’s House Ledbury website and blog.

The Friends of the Master’s House continue to support the project with activities and they also offer visitors the opportunity to be taken on a detailed tour of the whole building to give an insight into its architecture and history. The tours are ticketed but are free to join. Donations are welcome on the completion of the tour, which are used to fund future events and to enable the group to be self-supporting. Individual Group tours can also be arranged and self-guided tours with a tablet are also available. For further information, see the contact details below.

Fundraising also takes place through the sales of Christmas cards and gifts, all unique to the Master’s House, which can be found during a visit to the building.

Among the many events that take place, one of the highlights last year was the Master’s House Feast which is being repeated this year on November 26th with food inspired by medieval cuisine as well as performances of early music.

community film orchestra The Film Orchestra is a group of local musicians who come together to play music from films, television and video games.

They’ve recently started a Community Orchestra, which meets to rehearse once a month in Colwall.

‘We have a high proportion of young players and this is often their first experience of playing in an orchestra, which can be quite daunting’ says Jane Whittle who founded the original Film Orchestra four years ago. ‘Within half an hour of starting they discover it’s great fun as we always aim to make rehearsals relaxed and enjoyable.’

The Community Orchestra is just one of several Film Orchestras which have sprung up locally in the past four years. ‘I expected we would only have around 15 children coming every week to our rehearsals’ says Jane. ‘Instead, we now have five different orchestras, three wind bands as well as two jazz bands, a saxophone ensemble & choir!’

How boring would it be if everyone was the same and had the same sense of ‘taste’?

This is the beauty of being the buyer for your own independent gift shop. I get to choose my own stock; I have the job of a ‘professional shopper’ (not a bad job really?).

When I buy something I always ask myself, who is going to ‘love’ this? The other measurement is always ‘is it new’ and ‘have I seen it anywhere’ before? When it is ‘new’ to me then I know it will generally be new to my customers, and then I get excited!

However, you do always have the problem that everyone loves something new but they also want me to continue to stock everything they already like. I need a shop with expandable sides!

So Christmas buying and trends this year was a mixture of trying to solve the above problem.

For ‘new’ I have some stunning beaten metal tea-light and candle holders. They are darker on the outside and then glow and reflect beautifully on the inside. These are right on trend with their mixed metal hand-made feel.

So lots of new stock arriving, but I also had fun picking the new colour-ways for the season for my ‘must-haves’, lots of lovely deep russets, golds and greens in handbags, scarves and gloves. Especially lovely are some toasty lined gloves that have little pearl jewel coloured buttons sewn on the outside and catch the light.

Something old, something new, is a pretty old adage but it seems to work for me!

However I have also chosen a fabulous selection of Angel Chimes (these are the ones that gently spin round when you light the tea-light) and are ever popular for children and grandchildren to watch.

I went buying to try and find something different for the tricky subject of ‘male gifts’. I did get excited when I saw a new starter company that was selling ‘Big Cheese Making Kits’, they are brilliant. The kit contains all you need to make 40 individual batches of cheese, including mozzarella, goat’s cheese and ‘paneer’. You are buying someone a hobby that you get to enjoy too! They even have one to make ‘halloumi’ for any vegetarians.

apple cinnamon Cake A lovely spiced cake which makes the most of autumn fruit.

1. Preheat oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Grease and line one 23cm (9inch) sandwich tin and place on a baking tray.

2. Sift the flour and spices into a large mixing bowl; rub the margarine in until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

3. Mix the sliced apples with the soft brown sugar.

4. Stir the apples into the flour and mix in enough milk to make a thick batter.

5. Spoon the mixture into the tin and spread evenly. Sprinkle with Demerara sugar.

6. Bake for about 40- 45 minutes until firm to the touch.

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour

Ingredients • 225g self raising flour, white • 125g sunflower margarine • 100g soft brown sugar • 25ml milk • pinch cinnamon • pinch nutmeg • 350g cooking apples, peeled and sliced • 3 tbsp Demerara sugar for sprinkling

7. Cut into slices to serve. This is good served chilled.

dealing with a crisis

t the end of a busy volunteer day here at the temple I went with 3 year old Felix to feed our much loved bunnies, Peter and Poppet. After a while I thought it strange that Poppet wasn’t coming out of the hutch, I discovered that she’d broken her leg very badly.

The next 48 hours included a frantic journey to the emergency out of hours vet, research about rabbit fractures, transferring her back to our local vet, and 6 hours of anxiety as we waited to hear whether or not she’d made it through her operation. Rabbits are difficult to treat because of their size, the fact that vets get much more practice on cats and dogs, and their susceptibility to not making it through general anaesthetics.

We never know when a crisis is going to occur.

During a time of stress, even a small event can feel like a crisis and tip us over into not coping.

Here’s a check-list to help you when you feel like you’re losing control.

1. Breathe. Take a slow breath in and try to remember to keep breathing slowly and deeply.

Feel the contact of your feet on the ground. If you can reduce your stress response you’ll be able to deal with whatever is happening more effectively.

2. Seek support. This is important in the moment of crisis, as when I asked Felix to run for help, and as time goes on, I let my friend know what was happening and received her support. Even if you don’t usually ask for help, do it!

3. Prioritise. If a crisis occurs, don’t feel you have to continue coping with the rest of your life in the way you always have. Delegate any crucial tasks and let go of the rest.

4. Don’t rush. This can be very difficult in the heat of the moment, but give yourself a little space to consider your choices before you take any action. If you can find some calm, this will

also help to steady others who are affected by the situation.

5. Be kind to yourself. We don’t all show the best of ourselves during a crisis, and that’s okay.

Try to forgive yourself and try to forgive others for the way they behave when they’re under pressure.

6. Allow space later for resting and processing.

We were very physically tired for a couple of days afterwards and we tried to give ourselves rest. I also felt upset a couple of times and I let myself feel these feelings without rushing through them.

7. One day at a time. If the crisis is ongoing, make plans for the future if you can and then try not to dwell on it – just deal with what needs to be done today, or during the next hour, or during the next five minutes. Keep taking care of yourself and keep being kind to yourself.

On the night of Poppet’s big operation we were delighted to pick her up and bring her home.

She was now a tripod bunny - her back hind leg had been amputated - and we put her with her dear companion Peter. He immediately started grooming her, especially the ear that she couldn’t reach any more with her absent leg.

A week on and the wound is healing very well.

She’s hopping around happily, eating well, still completely in love with Peter, and visibly enjoying her life. A happy bunny!

After such a glorious summer we are now being treated to a feast of autumn colour. When the days are shorter and the weather turns cooler we all spend less time outdoors. Autumn is a relaxing time to garden, with the knowledge that you can catch up with those jobs while nature has a little sleep!

Try and make the most of your garden in these few months before winter, as autumn is the perfect time for planting trees, shrubs, roses, fruit and other perennials.

If you plan to move any trees or shrubs now is the time to transplant them. Trim off any damaged roots before you replant to help prevent disease. Bare root plants such as roses, fruit bushes, ornamental trees and hedging can be bought and planted out now. Always soak the roots before planting and make sure you firm the soil in well around the roots. When planting trees secure the plants in position with a stake and tie.

If you are planting in poor soil it may be beneficial to buy some mycorrhizal fungi to sprinkle in the base of the planting hole.

Diseases such as rose blackspot overwinter on stems and fallen leaves, so remove them and dispose of them. Plant out any spring bulbs and plant up winter pots with winter flowering shrubs such as Cornus or Skimmia and fill in with winter heathers, bulbs, ivy and pansies.

There might still be some late summer produce to harvest including squashes or pumpkins.

Store them in a dry cool place. Prune perennials without seed heads to the base and prune and shape summer flowering shrubs. Collect seeds from Verbena bonariensis and store to sow in the spring.

The work on our nursery still goes on through the winter, dividing perennials, pruning and construction work all preparing for the spring.

The retail nursery closes on October 29th for the winter and opens again in March (perfect time for a trip to the Caribbean - dream on !).

Make the most of the compost heap and dig out any rotted compost to spread on the borders or use for planting out. Leave some untidy areas with leaves and twigs for hedgehogs to hibernate.

Avoid cutting back seed heads of perennials and grasses as these will provide winter food for insects and birds.

1. For the pastry, sieve the flour and sugar into a large mixing bowl, add the cubed butter and rub all together between your fingers and thumbs till the mix resembles fine bread crumbs 2. In a small bowl, beat the egg together with 4 tablespoons of ice cold water and pour into the flour mixture 3. Slowly mix the ingredients to form a dough, but don’t over work it

hop art Graffiti art isn’t something you normally find at the Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group! Yet earlier in the year, this active group of local artists found themselves creating street art, thanks to a regional arts project exploring links between urban and rural communities.

ack in the 19th and early 20th centuries, families from Birmingham and the Black Country used to spend their late summers travelling to Herefordshire and Worcestershire, where they would work to pick the hops on local farms.

Taking this annual migration as its inspiration, The Hop Project brought together artists in different communities across the West Midlands to create music, photography, quilting and painting. There have been contributions from local art and quilting groups, primary schools and even a model railway society.

As part of the project, The Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group (known as the CMS Art Group) became involved with a day of graffiti art in the car park of Mathon Village Hall. More used to working in watercolours, acrylic paint or pastels, they were given advice from an expert before spray painting a series of large panels.

‘It was certainly different!’ says Bill Crouch, the Chairman of CMS Art Group. ‘We had a one day workshop with a graffiti artist from Birmingham and we really did have a great time.’

‘Tackling graffiti art got us thinking outside of our normal comfort zone’ continues Bill. ‘One of our artists, who creates images by building layers of paper together, was very inspired - some of her work will be in the finished exhibition. As a result of this, we are now talking about producing a large picture with each of our artists creating a smaller part.’

Creating their own art based on the graffiti techniques, the group’s work forms part of the final exhibition which is touring the area this autumn and winter – there’s even talk of it touring abroad. The exhibition also includes

interpretations of hop picking through hip-hop, quilting, model-making and music.

The Hop Project will be on display during October in Leominster Library, at The Hive in Worcester during November and part of December, while from mid-January to mid-March it’s at The Courtyard in Hereford. You can read more at www.thehopproject.co.uk

Cradley, Mathon and Storridge Art Group meets twice a month on the

second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at Storridge Village Hall between 2pm and 4pm. New members are always welcome at this friendly group. The annual exhibition of their work takes place on 22nd and 23rd October between 10am and 4pm each day at Mathon Village Hall.

Theatre News Dead Sheep Limited in collaboration with Cahoots Theatre Company present

Jonathan Maitland’s record-breaking debut play, DEAD SHEEP is set to appear at Malvern Theatres from Monday 14th to Saturday 19th November.

Steve Nallon stars as Margaret Thatcher, having portrayed her for many years on the political puppetry satire Spitting Image. Paul Bradley (Holby City) will play Geoffrey Howe, Carol Royle will play Elspeth Howe, alongside Graham Seed, Tony Bell and John Wark.

It is 1989 and a seemingly invincible Prime Minister has sacked her Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe, thinking she had nothing to fear from him; his speaking skills had, famously, been compared to those of a dead sheep. But inspired by his wife Elspeth - a formidable and witty feminist, whose relationship with Thatcher was notoriously frosty – Howe overcame his limitations to destroy Mrs Thatcher’s political career…and also his own.

Dead Sheep portrays the true story of how Mrs. Thatcher, the most divisive Prime Minister of modern times, was brought down by her one time friend and political soul mate Geoffrey Howe. Using imagined dialogue to portray private scenes between the main protagonists, it recreates the events leading up to Howe’s famous 1990 speech, in which he criticised Thatcher for undermining policies on economic and monetary union in Europe, ultimately leading to her downfall and resignation.

Topics include the geology, wildlife and history of the hills. Full price tickets are £18 or £15 for members of Voice and £10 for NUS students or under 18 yr olds.
