Editor’s message

Spring time! Spring is here and across our area there are all kinds of things to enjoy. Events like the Well Dressing Festival are now a firmly established part of the local calender, while newer ventures like Ledbury Community Day and Colwall Ale House Festival offer even more opportunities for a fun day out. They still have a few years to go before catching up with Mathon Women’s Institute, which this year celebrates its 90th anniversary. Congratulations to the group, which is still a relevant and active part of the local community; you can read about them on Page 12. Elsewhere in the magazine you will find our Noticeboard, with inspiring ideas of local groups you can join. Our What’s On pages are bursting with different events to enjoy as Spring gets fully underway. Enjoy your April & May!

Equity Release is here to stay By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall It was back in 2011 when I first wrote an article on the subject of Equity Release. Since then at Smith Weale Associates, and it seems nationally, there has been a marked increase in the amount of people turning to this very reputable but sometimes divisive area of financial planning. As such I feel we should once again look at what is fast becoming an extremely popular way of raising money for a whole host of reasons. It is a great paradox that so many people across the country have considerable equity invested in their homes and yet disappointing retirement incomes, leaving them to struggle with extra expenses and rising living costs after they finish work. Interest on savings is still at an all-time low, pension annuity rates are still at an all-time low, care home costs are increasing, more and more over 60s are turning to their properties as an alternative way of solving the shortfalls. The History Equity Release is finally showing signs of shaking the negative stigma often associated with the mis-selling horror stories of the 1980s and 1990s. Those choosing equity release now can enjoy low borrowing rates and three levels of protection through a structured financial advice process regulated by the FCA, face-to-face legal advice and many product safeguards. Independent advice Equity release products can be complicated and it is important to seek specific tailored advice from an independent specialist, as everybody’s circumstances and needs differ. It is essential the advice you seek is independent and from the whole of the market, and importantly only from firms regulated by the Financial Services Authority. As an extra precaution, companies that subscribe to SHIP (Safe Home Income Plans) can give that extra peace of mind, as this is a self-regulating industry body set up by lenders and offers standards and an ethical code of conduct.

Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. We can ensure you are in an informed position with regard the Equity Release market including the alternative options that may be available. Together we will help make the critical

The Products Equity Release can take many different forms with some plans involving the sale of part or all of the property, often referred to as Reversion schemes. There are also plans that are very similar to a typical mortgage whereby the loan has interest payments, but are deferred or paid; this type of plan is a Lifetime Mortgage. Within the product itself there are variants like lump sum payments, income payments or a drawdown facility giving ad-hoc payments. There are pros and cons to each and every type of equity release and the correct solution will only become apparent once all circumstances are considered. The Process The first priority is to establish whether or not an equity release is even suitable, sometimes the property is not acceptable or the ages of the individuals do not meet lending criteria. Sometimes, after careful consideration, it is a straight forward decision that this type of solution does not sit happily with those concerned. Whatever the reason, if it is established after meetings with an adviser that equity release is not suitable, then that adviser has done just a good a job as if equity release was suitable not least because this decision should not be entered into lightly, the need for face to face consultations is never greater than here. Alternative Options? With your family and adviser, alternative options must be considered; for example, do nothing, downsize, borrow from family members, arrange an interest only mortgage, to name a few. It is important all angles be explored, only then can you make an informed decision. Get Informed Here at Smith Weale we have a supply of free impartial booklets to help you make an informed decision, if you would like to receive a copy please contact us. All our consultations in regard to Equity Release are free and without obligation.

Become a Friend at Clarence Park Open Day - 23rd May 2014 10am – 4pm Its been an exciting year for the Clarence Park Village development. Opening in June 2014 , there is already an established community of residents eager to move in. The residents met at the Village’s monthly ‘Friends meetings’ and have become great neighbours already; together they share village news, enjoy social events and have lots of fun – which is just what Clarence Park will be like and it will offer lots more as well. Once the village is open, everything a resident needs to enjoy village life is on their doorstep and just a short stroll away; a daily exercise class, meeting neighbours for coffee at the ‘Cafe @ the Park®’ or village excursions; this is why so many people will be moving to Clarence Park Village.

Julie Willington, the Village Manager said,

“Being a Friend of Clarence Park Village is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in the village and meet new friends. The village is going to be a pioneer in the county for this active, aspirational lifestyle.

You too can enjoy the facilities and social events by becoming a Friend of Clarence Park Village.

We look forward to welcoming everyone on 23rd May 2014!

Everyone that signs up to a single Friends membership at the village on 23rd May, will get 10% off their annual fee.

Colwall feature

Ale House Festival Plans are gathering pace for the Ale House Festival in Colwall this June. Celebrating local life, the week long series of events will bring people together and raise money for the historic building which stands next to the church. As well as the Food and Drink Fair there will be a classic car cavalcade, an exhibition or art, a celebration of local farming including the sheep race, and fun for all the family. But perhaps a lasting culinary legacy will be created when the Festival’s very own sausage is produced. Matt Waller of local butchers D T Waller & Sons is currently creating two sausages, one Ale, one Cider. These will be on sale in their Colwall shop in the first week of May, and people will be invited to vote for their favourite sausage. As a result of that, the most popular will become the Colwall Ale House Festival Sausage, on sale throughout May and June.

‘We’ve already confirmed twenty food and drink producers who will take part, and they’re all local’ says Phil Hitchen, one of the organisers. ‘There are well established farm businesses and new start-ups all coming along, while local beer and cider producers will be well represented. Local businesses are also being very generous in helping us out. Our marquee is being donated by Classic Marquees while Keiran’s Repairs and Service based in Colwall will be sponsoring the Sheep Racing. As bizarre as it sounds, this is always a fun event that’s become a bit of a local speciality.’ After a well attended meeting earlier in March, the plans are now progressing. ‘At the moment we’ve got more ideas than people’ says Phil, ‘but the more people who get involved, the better it will be. Do let us know if you can volunteer.’ Local groups are welcome to set up their own stalls and activities during the festival and use it to promote their interest and raise funds. ‘The deal is that any proceeds raised from stalls, games or other activities are split half and half between the group itself and our own charities’ says Phil. ‘Of course they’re welcome to keep all the proceeds of selling their own merchandise, books and subscriptions so the Festival should benefit not only the Ale House but the wider community.’

The Ale House Festival takes place from 21st to 28th June. For more information, search for ‘Colwall Ale House Festival’ on Facebook or speak to Phil Hitchen on (01684) 572636 or Sue Armstrong 07506 131765.

They met monthly in what was then the newly opened Mathon Village Hall where they continue to meet to this day. They organised many local events such as a fĂŞte, horticultural shows and entertained as many as sixty village children at annual Christmas parties. Some traditions continue today such as the Spring Bulb Competition where the winner is awarded a much-coveted cup.

Mathon WI occasionally provides teas for walking groups, many of whom come back each year. Members also contribute their skills and interests to the Trading Stall at our regular meetings, made up of cakes and produce and craft items, created by the members.

The longest standing present member joined in 1965 and today the membership includes ladies from Colwall, Cradley, Malvern and Powick. Meetings today have speakers who educate and entertain us on a wide range of topics, after which there is time for lively discussion and socialising whilst enjoying refreshments provided in turn by members. Regular outings are arranged to country houses, gardens, theatre visits and restaurants. We participate in local fundraising events which benefit the community and improve the local environment. News from the Hills

Malvern Well Dressing Festival Dozens of springs around the Hills will be decorated for the Festival which takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend at the start of May. The theme for this year’s decorations is ‘Peace’. ‘Our theme of Peace enables those who wish to remember 1914 to do so, while those whose feeling about War is “let’s not do that again!” can take other perspectives such as The Quiet Life, Brotherhood of Man, The Countryside and so on’ says Lionel Shorstone who organises the event on behalf of the Malvern Spa Association. ‘Announcing the theme at the start of the year has given people time to come up with some wonderful artistic creations.’ It all comes to a head on Friday 2nd May when some forty sites around the area will be transformed by teams and individuals who each adopt a spring to decorate. Judges will then tour all of the sites before awarding gold, silver and bronze rosettes to those they consider the best. Now well established, the organisers claim to be the biggest festival of its kind in Britain.

• • • •

‘Prior to the 1990s Malvern’s slowly-vanishing ‘wellsprings’ were dressed when people felt inclined to do so’ says Lionel. ‘Then the efforts were drawn together, with the Spa Association co-ordinating it and seeking always to help people and improve standards.’ Dressings will remain in place for longer than usual this year, so the Festival can merge with The Great Malvern Floral Festival which sees decorations appear town centre shop fronts. You will find more details of the Festival on our website,

West Malvern feature

West Fest: Sat 5 July As preparations begin for this year’s West Fest in West Malvern, the organisers are asking local musicians to step forward and take up the offer to perform at the event this July.

The main stage and the acoustic stage at this year’s event will welcome new bands as well as the return of a few old favourites. In previous years there’s been all kinds of music and last year a third stage was added to the event, the Andy Dakin Memorial stage. Andy was a longstanding member of the West Fest team and it was his wish, before his untimely death, to create an area where fresh local talent had the opportunity to perform alongside the main stages. As well as music, the organisers hope there will be storytelling, poetry reading, choir singing and other performances from young people. Last year a ‘silent disco’ finished the event which proved a great success. The beer tent will be offering ales from West Malvern Brewery as well as cider, lager and soft drinks, while Oxfam will run a cocktail bar, something that proved very popular last year. Local caterers will offer all kinds of snacks and there will be tea and cakes. For children there will be inflatables to play on and face-painting, hair braiding and other entertainment. Work from local artists will be exhibited in The Arts and Crafts Marquee, while there will also be stalls to browse around and learn more about local businesses. As well as promoting local musicians, businesses and craftspeople, the Festival raises money for local community groups. The entire event is totally non-profit and organised by people working as volunteers. The entry charge for a family ticket this year will be £16, while an adult ticket is £7 and under 18s will be £4. If you’re under five years old you get in for free! If you’re a band and you’d like to offer to play at this year’s event, please email music@west-fest. There is also space for exhibitors in the arts and crafts marque, if you’re interested then please email

WHERE THE MONEY GOES West Fest 2013 raised £5,500 for good causes. Among the many beneficiaries was The Mathon, Cradley and Storridge Tennis Club. ‘We received £200 from West Fest, and the donation was very timely because we are resurfacing the courts’ says Chris Martin from the tennis club which is located between West Malvern and Mathon. ‘ We have quite a few young people drawn from around the area but we really want to encourage more local children to start playing. In the summer we plan to hold coaching camps over two or three days. This year we also have sessions on a Friday evening for children of all ages, with coaches travelling to us from Manor Park in Malvern. This support from West Fest is very welcome.’ For more information on the Tennis Club, please talk to Tony Poyner on (01684) 567238 or 07801 926434.

West Fest takes place on July 5th this year between 11am and 10pm on the West Malvern playing fields. For more information and future updates, take a look at our website,’

Cradley feature

Post Office Service A new Post Office service is coming to Cradley. Twice a week, a counter will be running at the Village Hall offering all the services currently available in Great Malvern.

‘It’s great news’ says Chris Lowder, Chair of the Parish Council. ‘Local people have faced a long journey for postal services since the closure of Cradley Stores and Post Office last year.’ Although exact times are still to be finalised, the outreach service will be open at the Village Hall for two half-days every week. It’s being overseen by Nigel Morris who runs Great Malvern Post Office. ‘We’ve been running a similar service in several other local villages which have been very well received’ he says. ‘All the services we offer in Malvern, from renewing car tax to passports will be available as well as all the regular postal services.’ In fact, there will be more services than the former Post Office had available. The service in Cradley will be run in the Heritage and Resource Room at the Village Hall. ‘There’s a lot of small businesses in the Cradley area’ says Jeff White, who’s on the Village Hall Committee. ‘It may be one or two people working from home, but we do also have a small industrial

estate. These new postal services will support our local economy.’ Andrew Pothecary operates the outreach service in Bishops Frome and will be coming to run the Cradley service. ‘People are very appreciative of it’ he says. ‘Quite a few people can’t get out of their village to visit other post offices and it does bring more of a community spirit to the villages where we run Outreach Post Offices.’ It’s hoped that other activities will run in Cradley Village Hall on the days when the Post Office is open. ‘There will be teas, coffee and cake on sale here’ says Chris Lowder, ‘which will help increase footfall. If people are popping out to use the post office, there will be something more to enjoy.’ ‘Without a local post office in Cradley, we’ve faced a journey to Ledbury or Malvern’ says Jan Dampney who is the Chair of the Village Hall Committee in Cradley. ‘Of course with the current threat to local bus services, we faced a very real possibility that some people would no longer be able to visit a post office at all, so this is really good news.’

The Post Office Service in Cradley will start on: Thursday 8 May Residents of Cradley will be informed of exact opening dates and times via a leaflet through the door and posters around the village

Ledbury feature

Ledbury Community Day Organisations in and around Ledbury are invited to participate in the 2014 Community Day, to be held on Saturday 7th June. Such was the overwhelming success, the comments and feedback from last year’s community day held on 1st June were quite specific and unanimous ”Let us do this again”!

Over 50 groups and organisations took part and made it a super day for the town and its residents. The Burgage Hall was buzzing with people, and the Walled Garden had all kinds of displays. There were skittles at the British Legion, martial arts at the Recreation Ground, and archery at the Football Field. Groups taking part fed back that it helped them get their message across, recruit new members and helpers, and that it was worth doing again. This year the organisers want it to be bigger and better and with greater involvement of young people. Around these events, they will be encouraging local businesses to get involved, put on displays, and join them in celebrating the best of Ledbury and District.

The aim of Ledbury Community Day is to provide an opportunity for local groups to show what they do and encourage participation from locals and visitors – a celebration of Ledbury and District’s excellence. So get involved now! They need your completed forms and choice of venue to showcase your talents and organisations. You can choose to hold your event at the premises you normally use, or you can look to combining with other groups and sharing facilities. Like last year there will be space at public sites in the town for this event, including the Burgage Hall, the Community Hall, the Recreation Ground, the Market House, the Walled Garden. It is all about being creative, work with others and show off what is available locally. Do find out more on the website mentioned below.

Wellington Heath feature

Pool Piece completed After a huge volunteer effort, Pool Piece in Wellington Heath should be ready to be used by the community once again in late Spring or early Summer.

Last year a project started to breathe new life into the open space which stands at the heart of the village. ‘This has always been a space for the community but we wanted to make it more accessible’ says David Darwood, a member of the working group. ‘One of our priorities was to provide a flat area for children to play in addition to providing play equipment. We also want to enable activities such as fetes, outside drama and music events and picnics to take place and to provide somewhere relaxing to visit. ‘Although Pool Piece was designated as a community area with a children’s play area, it was never ideal because of the slope’ David continues. ‘The Parish Council was keen to sort it out and asked a working group to seek funding. We received a grant from the Biffa Award ( which helps community and environmental projects. We also formed a partnership with Community Action Ledbury and District, and got to work.’ A lot of work went into landscaping the area once the brambles, nettles and other stubborn weeds were cleared. A willow tree was cut back once permission was sought, and this allowed more light into the area which in turn will help the establishment of native species of plants. ‘After that the diggers moved in’ says David. ‘We’ve cut into the slope to form an auditorium and used the remaining earth to create a level area at the bottom.’ Drainage improvements were also carried out and new turf was laid.

The new space can be used for community events but on a daily basis will offer new play facilities for children. ‘The play equipment here was dated, and we’re replacing it with a birds nest swing and a jungle bridge’ David continues. ‘There will be an A-frame shelter which offers a place to escape from the weather but also somewhere for children to play.’ A new bridge is being installed across the stream which will connect the area with the car park outside the newly opened The Farmer’s Arms pub. The area around the stream is being planted with snowdrops, daffodils, snakes head fritillaries and native wild plants are being introduced that thrive in damp environments. This will help create a more environmentally attractive area to encourage insects and bird life. ‘Some people in the village have made wicket fencing and a gate to enhance the entrance to the Pool Piece site,’ says David. ‘Once this is finished, we will continue an action group to both maintain and further develop the area. ‘

You can find Pool Piece in the centre of the village and it should be reopend by the end of May 2014. 26

Ledbury feature

Fundraising Scouts Three teenagers from Ledbury are starting a mammoth fundraising effort to attend the World Scout Jamboree in Japan next year, one of them is a member of the All About team.

Liam Spence is one of the All About team that delivers the magazine around Ledbury. In his spare time he’s an Explorer Scout, and together with James Kerridge and Anna McAteer will be attending the gathering at Yamaguchi, during July and August 2015. Before they can go, they each need to raise £3,000 for the three week trip. Getting selected for the trip was certainly a challenge. ‘There were around one hundred of us, competing for a place to represent Herefordshire and Worcestershire’ says Liam. ‘After a written submission we attended a selection day with mental and physical challenges.’ The three Explorer Scouts were chosen along with another 23 from across the two counties. Within that number, 11 are from the Malverns’ scouting district. To have so many representing our area is certainly a big achievement, something that makes the scouts very proud.

to pay for the trip. They are planning plenty of fundraising events around Ledbury, which we’ll feature in future editions of the magazine and on our website, They are also hoping local businesses will sponsor them, and so if you think you can help then please email

When they finally arrive in Yamaguchi , they will join more than 30,000 scouts and leaders from 161 countries. Over three weeks they will experience many different cultural activities and attend social gatherings. They will also get the opportunity to stay with a Japanese family and they will visit Hiroshima on the 70th anniversary of the nuclear attack on the city. Before all that happens, the three Ledbury scouts will be working very hard to raise the money

Green Fingers At Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget’s busy with a strategy to keep weeds and pests at bay. 01684 540631 Well spring is officially here and after all that soggy grey weather its wonderful to see everything bursting into life. Fortunately we have not suffered too badly from the constant rain on the nursery. Our polytunnels kept plants dry and are now, with the recent warm spell, encouraging fast and lush growth. Our early Alpines and bulbs have been beautiful and all the young vegetable plants are growing well. With orders flying out and the season kicking off to an early start it is difficult to find time to check plants regularly. It is important after such a mild winter to keep Aphids in check, especially in the greenhouse and polytunnels. Use a pyrethrum or soap based spray and avoid spraying in direct sunlight, the evening is best as the spray can dry off before the bees become active again in the morning. We also have a very useful wren who spends the night in the greenhouse and breakfasts on aphids. When replanting containers take out the old soil and look out for vine weevil grubs; they are white with a brown head. Use fresh soil if they are present. If you have an infestation in permanent planters, treat with nematodes as soon as possible. Weeds are also starting to grow fast, so tackle them quickly and dig out any perennial weeds so that you can keep borders hoed regularly. I am always being asked about low-maintenance weed control, so here are a few tips. - Spun Materials (usually plastic fibres bonded together) are lightweight and porous, allowing

water to penetrate easily. They are easy to cut and do not fray along the edges. These materials can be used for planting vegetables or shrub borders. Cover the material with bark chip or gravel if you are using it as a permanent border. - Mulch mats can be used around individual trees or shrubs and are often made from biodegradeable materials such as wool or flax. - Biodegradeable sheeting (usually corn starch or paper) such as Planters Paper Mulch are excellent for season-long weed control in vegetable beds. Some are enriched with nutrients and at the end of the season they can be dug into the soil! - Fill in spaces in the borders by sowing drifts of Annuals such as Cornflowers and Cosmos. These will be better to look at than Dandelions and a reasonably cheap option. Now is the time to sow all those veg plants outside. Remember not to put too many in the drill, what you save can grow you another crop. Tidy up Strawberry plants and use a mulch around the base to keep the fruits off the ground. White plastic is good as it reflects the light upwards and they ripen quicker. However, straw is much nicer to look at! Lastly, we have an exciting new addition to the nursery this year, an ‘Artist in Residence’. MarieTherese King is working from her new art studio at the nursery and is having an open day on April 25th & 26th (10am - 5pm), so why not come along and be inspired! There will be workshops, etched glass and batik prints on sale.

Malvern Theatres News Competition

Alistair McGowan leads an established company of actors in a centenary year production of Shaw’s enduring masterpiece directed by Tony award-winning David Grindley. Pygmalion is one of theatre’s most entertaining and beguiling explorations of gender and class and is perhaps best known as the inspiration for the musical ‘My Fair Lady’.

Win two tickets for Pygmalion

The aristocratic and pompous Professor Henry Higgins (made famous by Rex Harrison) makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform the manners and speech of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and pass her off as a society lady. Packed with a host of larger than life characters including Alfred Doolittle and lovelorn Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Pygmalion remains one of Shaw’s most popular plays and a classic British drama; full of his trademark wit, style and humour.

You could win a pair of tickets to the opening night on 28th April if you can name who played Eliza Doolittle in the 1964 film of “My Fair Lady” which is based on the story of Pygmalion.

Pygmalion runs from 28th April – 3rd May. Eves 7.30pm, Wed and Sat Mats 2.30pm. Tickets from £17.36 - £31.92 from Malvern Theatres Box Office on 01684 892277 or

Good luck!

Rachel Barry stars as Eliza Doolittle in the production of Pygmalion at Malvern Theatres.

Email the answer plus your name, postcode and phone number to by Wednesday 16 April 2014 The winners will be drawn from the entries and notified by Thu 17 April. *For terms & conditions see our website
