Meeting every week and led by a walk leader, they head out for a stroll (or something a little faster) for about an hour, taking in the river or some of the many green spaces across the city. It’s partly about getting fit but it’s also a social catch up, a chance to make new friends and have a natter. You can read more about them on Page 14.

1. fun run The Norton Community Trust Fun Run takes place on Sunday 25th September at 10am.

Starting at Norton Parish Hall, Littleworth, there’s a 5k and a 10k course, with trophies to the first three men and women across the line – every finisher receives a medal.

2. worcester music festival Dozens of free gigs take place across Worcester over a weekend in September, as the Worcester Music Festival returns. The annual event raises money for charity and is always oversubscribed by bands and performers offering to play in pubs, clubs and other public places. This year’s festival is between Friday 16th and Sunday 18th September.

things to enjoy local During Sept & Oct

Historic buildings across the city throw open their doors over the weekend of 10th and 11th September.

This national event is a chance to learn more about many local places including The Guildhall and The Commandery, The Museum of Porcelain, the Cathedral and Greyfriars. At Tudor House on Friar Street, costumed interpreters will tell you more about hops and herbs in Tudor times.

St Helen’s Church on Fish Street is holding a history day, while in St John’s there’s a chance to climb the church tower.

There’s also a rare opportunity to visit former Nurses’ Home Mulberry House, now part of the campus of the University of Worcester. Some events and tours might need to be booked in advance.

4. king john Eight centuries after King John was buried at Worcester Cathedral, a performance of Shakespeare’s play King John will be performed in the Cathedral this October. One of the most controversial of English monarchs, this play is a unique chance to hear his story, told in his chosen place of rest. Produced by Worcester Repertory Company, King John is performed between 18th and 22nd October at the Cathedral.

5. battle of worcester anniversary Saturday 3rd September marks the 365th anniversary of the Battle of Worcester. To commemorate the occasion, The Battle of Worcester Society is organising a Civic Procession from the Guildhall to The Commandery. Gathering at 5.30 pm, local dignitaries will be joined by members of the newly formed militia, Battle of Worcester Society members and the public. There is a short Drumhead Service on the top of Fort Royal Park starting at 7pm, followed by a social gathering at The Commandery. The Battle of Worcester Society organises many more events and talks throughout the year.

the swan theatre's Poet in residence What do poets do all day? In fact, what do they do over the course of a whole year? We put the question to Ben Parker, who is The Swan Theatre’s Poet in Residence for 2016.

What exactly do you do as the theatre’s Poet in Residence?

Although I am ‘in residence’, I’m not there all the time. Instead, when I visit I spend time in some of the backstage areas. I’m interested in the spaces less often seen, the hidden parts, the aspects of the theatre that people might not know. I make notes as I go around and turn them into poems later on. My remit is to write ten poems and to publish them at the end of the year.

It is certainly one of the least attended art forms when compared with music or the visual arts.

Poetry doesn’t get the same media coverage. It’s sometimes perceived as being more difficult to understand than reading a novel or watching a film, but that becomes self-perpetuating as people don’t engage with it. Poetry might only be heard in school, at weddings or funerals and so people are not used to it in daily life.

What is your favourite part of The Swan?

Why did you chose to become a poet?

Some of the backstage areas have a magic of their own. The workshop has scenery from all the different productions piled up together, in the paint room you have colours mingled together that you would never see anywhere else. There’s a slightly spooky feel to the costume store, with all the empty outfits hanging up. I will be careful not to break the illusion of theatre by exposing these places but instead I hope to reveal their magic.

I can pin down the exact moment. I was at a party and overheard two people discussing a film about the poet Sylvia Plath. I’d never thought about poetry before, but I discovered recordings online of her reading her work and it blew me away. Suddenly I realised you can enjoy poetry!

Listening to poetry means letting go and enjoying the sound, the rhythms and the language. I think people need to stop worrying about understanding a poem the first time they read it. Return to it again and you get more out of it each time. After all, if you have a music album you listen to it again and again, it grows on you. Poetry is my favourite form of entertainment – it’s another way of experiencing someone’s imagination.

What about front of house?

I will be engaging with some of the productions.

I’m really interested to see Shakespeare’s King John which will be performed in view of his tomb in Worcester Cathedral.

Although my residency finishes at the end of the year, I shall be working with Swan Youth Theatre, working with them on a performance next Spring.

If there’s interest in open mic nights I might return to read poetry as well.

Trotshill Totties WI The Trotshill Totties WI group offers a warm welcome to anybody who is thinking of joining. Meeting at 7.30pm on the second Tuesday of the month, they gather at The Lyppard Hub on Ankerage Green for talks, food and cookery, crafts, book sharing and more.

HARVEST CELEBRATIONS Fernhill Heath Baptist Church is holding its harvest celebrations over the weekend of 24th and 25th September. On the Saturday there’s a coffee morning starting at 10.30am until 12.30pm, with Ploughman’s Lunches being served. On the Sunday the Harvest Service takes place at 11am followed by Evening Worship at 6.30pm.

BARK IN THE PARK Bark in the Park is a fun dog show, bringing together the canine community in Worcester this September.

Happening in Gheluvelt Park at the Pump House Environment Centre, the show has different competitions including the Cutest Puppy, Scruffiest Mutt, Best Child Dog Handler and the Dog Most Like its Owner. There’s no need to register beforehand, just turn up half an hour before your competition category begins. As well as the show there are stalls, an interactive quiz and a digital ‘pawtrait’ booth.

WORCESTER PARK RUN The Worcester Parkrun is a weekly running event which is completely free to take part in. Starting every Saturday at 9am, the 5 kilometre course winds its way around the Worcester Woods Country Park.

The event is run by volunteers and everyone is welcome to join whether they are seasoned athletes or completely new to running.

Walking for health It’s a way to get fitter, enjoy a chat with the other walkers and explore the local area.

The St Peter’s Walking Group heads out every Friday and welcomes all abilities of walkers. Christine Shaw is the Scheme Co-ordinator and tells us more.

Who joins you each week?

Around 45 people attend every week, out of a total of 65 walkers who are registered with us. We meet at St Peter’s Baptist Church and you can just turn up at 10.15am - you don’t need to book ahead.

At 10.30am we head out in three groups – The Greyhounds (our quickest), The Strollers and The Amblers. The faster groups head out for around an hour, while The Amblers caters for people who have been poorly and they complete a shorter walk, returning to base after 45 minutes.

The walking helps people in many ways – not only improving physical health but also with emotional and mental wellbeing. Most of the people coming are retired but anybody can come along and if younger people want to attend we’d be thrilled!

Meeting in the heart of the St Peter’s estate makes our group handy for local people although others join us from further afield. We’re a warm, friendly group and I think that’s what keeps people coming back.

Where do you walk?

We use the church as our starting point and then we can walk as far as Fort Royal Park, along the canal or down to the footbridge over the River Severn beyond the Diglis playing fields. We’re fortunate to have so much green space around St Peter’s, not only around the estate itself but also Battenhall Park and beyond. There are so many routes available. We have sixteen trained walk leaders who are all volunteers and I am also trained as a walk leader.

How did the group begin?

It was started around eight years ago by a gentleman called Freeman Windsor. He started

with a handful of other walkers and the group quickly grew. I joined the group around six years ago and took on the administrative functions.

Freeman left us recently and moved to Ludlow, he’s now 90 and still walks regularly. A group of 34 walkers visited him recently for a walk and a picnic which was a lovely day out. As a group, we still hold a few special walks and events each year including an anniversary gathering and a Christmas lunch. Many of us make lasting friendships through the group, it really is a very friendly social group.

Charity

tesco's community champion Joanne Jenkins is the Community Champion and Trail Guide for Tesco in St Peter’s. Whether it’s helping out at local charity events or taking groups of children on a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the store, her job is very varied. Here she tells us more about her role.

In what ways do you help the community?

My role is to work within the local community with charities, groups & schools, getting involved in community events, and promoting Tesco as a great neighbour that can bring genuine benefit to the local community. We get involved in local events, working with the Parish Council on regular litter-picks, act as volunteers for charities or groups to help their fundraising events. We donate Raffle and Tombola prizes or goods to fetes and fairs. The Community Board in the foyer is used to advertise local events or group activities, as well as using photos to show the work we do.

Tell us about the ‘behind the scenes’ tours of the store you organise.

We had a paint station at St Richard’s Hospice Rainbow Run, we ran the barbecue at St Peter’s Festival, supplying all the food and cooking it - this raised over £400 for Acorn’s Hospice. A Team from all the stores in Worcester got together to refresh Norton Cricket Club with a painting makeover, Headway also benefitted from their reception area, hallway and computer room being painted by a team of Tesco volunteers.

Recipe

meg's strawberry pavlova Every now and again I feel inspired to learn a new technique to add to my culinary repertoire. Whilst that sounds almost painful and as a busy mum I should know better, this recipe is the result of some good research and less than fifteen minutes of my time in the kitchen…brilliant!

Meringue, it turns out, is based on a simple principle of 50g sugar to the white of one large egg. There are a few rules; a spotlessly clean bowl to whip up the mixture in, gently warming the sugar before adding it to the egg white, baking slowly and probably last thing in the day so that the oven temperature can fall away naturally once switched off, ideally overnight, and my own rule of going for a “free-form” shape which cuts out lots of fiddly piping (and no washing up of piping bags!).

Topping can of course be as simple or elaborate as you like, fresh fruit, cream, some greek yoghurt or crème fraiche, a drizzle of melted chocolate.

Serves 8 - 10 Ingredients • 6 egg whites carefully separated from large eggs

• 300g golden caster sugar • 10floz double cream • 2 heaped tablespoons of greek yoghurt • fresh strawberries • a sprig of fresh mint

Method Pre-heat the oven to 170°C, spread the caster sugar over an oven proof tray and warm for a few minutes until it looks as though it might melt at the edges. Turn down the oven temperature to 140°C. Begin to whisk the egg whites, this is ideally done in a food mixer. Allow the mixer to continue whisking as you carefully pour in the warmed sugar a little at a time until the meringue begins to stiffen and then appears thick and glossy.

Line a baking sheet with non-stick silicone baking paper. Spoon the mixture onto the sheet creating a free-form shape that suits your serving plate!

Bake the meringue for 50 minutes to 1 hour until the outside is slightly golden in colour and really firm to the touch. Turn off the oven leaving the

meringue inside allowing it to cool slowly with the oven preventing large cracks appearing across the meringue.

An hour or so before serving, top your meringue with cream, yoghurt or a mixture of your choice. I like to chop some fruit into the cream mixture to pile on top as well as slicing fresh fruit over it. You may well find that once topped your pavlova will give a satisfied sigh and collapse a little in the middle - all the better as the delicious sweet and tart flavours will mingle and melt together.

Why you eat chocolate

By Tracy J Reck, Exercise & Nutrition Coach in Worcester I gave a speech yesterday and one of the lines that most sticks out in my mind is: “Never take chocolate away from a stressed-out adult. They might bite you.”

It was a bit of a throwaway line that jumped into my mind when talking about the ‘see-food’ diet. You know the one; where you see food and you eat it, even if you had no prior plans to do so. It happens every day in offices and homes up and down the country when someone brings in cakes/chocolate/crisps/ wine (hopefully not into the office, that latter one) and you have munched your way through some food you had no intention of eating that day.

I was talking about how to shape the path to avoid this, by putting all the nom-nom foods into a place where you don’t see them as readily (seriously – if they’re on show in the kitchen, how much willpower do you waste trying to ignore them and forget they are there?).

But later on it got me thinking about the relationship we have with those foods we love, but also swear never to eat again on a regular basis. What role do they play in our lives? If you really consider it, what are you trying to make these foods do for you?

Food is supposed to be about energy, right? Fuel.

It’s also about pleasure, and it’s right and proper that it should be (yes, eating food because it’s nice is part of being a healthy eater. It’s important not to get that twisted).

But here are some things that chocolate, crisps, cake and wine CANNOT do for you.

They can’t make you less tired. Go have a nap instead. If you can’t because you’re in a meeting (where I know it is frowned upon), excuse

yourself and do a two minute meditation instead.

Then go nap as soon as you can.

They won’t make you less stressed. Only stress relieving behaviours, like walking, meditation, yoga, massage, taking action etc, can do that. I know, it’s a mad concept. But, you know it’s true. Because when was the last time that eating a raspberry muffin actually made any difference to what was stressing you out?

They will not solve any of your problems.

Unless your problem is that you have just experienced a Dementor (the guards of Azkaban in Harry Potter). In that case, eat a chocolate frog with my blessing.

They won’t make you less bored. Well maybe they will, but only for the nano-second that you’re nommin’ on ‘em, and then, sadly, you’ll be back to writing a report about the economic factors that caused the demise of the carpet industry, or whatever.

These foods DO feature in a healthy diet. But they don’t work as a sticking plaster for problems that have their own fixes.

All About...

warndon villages fc development centre Whether your children love football, or they’ve never kicked a football before, they’re welcome to come along to the Development Centre at Warndon Villages Football Club. The club re-starts its Sunday morning coaching sessions this September, and Ben Robertshaw tells us more.

When and where are the sessions?

We train every Sunday morning during school term time on the outdoor all-weather pitches at Perdiswell Leisure Centre. The younger group, aged 4 to 7 years, train from 9.30am to 10.30am and them from 10.50am it’s the turn of the 8 to 12 year olds. Boys and girls of all abilities are welcome. We charge £4 per player per session on a pay-as-you-go basis. We run the Development Centre training during school term time and will be re-starting on Sunday 11th September.

What is the Development Centre about?

Do you see the children improving?

We look to provide children with the opportunity to play football from the age of four until they are twelve or thirteen years old. We help them to develop skills as well as gain an understanding of and a passion for the game of football. If they’re keen, they can join one of our teams which will play games against other local clubs. It’s all about creating a positive football experience for young people.

If children’s attention to football has been limited to watching it on television then getting involved and playing it gives them a buzz. The progression in their game, from not knowing anything about football to becoming skilful, creative and making good decisions while playing is a pleasure to see.

We usually form two teams every season made up of children from the Development Centre sessions and over the past five years 13 teams have been created. The Under 8s team usually plays other Worcestershire teams in the Mercian League. In past years a few of our teams have even made it through to the finals.

Tell us about yourself and the others that help coach?

There are too many people making it happen to mention them all, but I’m grateful to Mark Bowley, Geoff Scott and Ella Stokes in particular.

All volunteers, they lead coaching sessions on Sunday mornings which includes planning work as well as delivering it. They give up their time every Sunday to help in any way they can.

Without them we wouldn’t have the success we enjoy now. They give up their free time to make it happen and do a fantastic job. I’ve been coaching at the club for the past nine years. I have a degree in Sports Science and a Masters Degree in Sports Coaching from the University of Worcester. I’m a Level 3 Football Coach and my day job is as a PE teacher.

st richard's hospice write a will month in september St Richard’s Hospice is launching its annual campaign to encourage more of us to write a Will. During September, local solicitors firms offer to write up your Will and donate their fees to the hospice.

he Write a Will Month campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of writing a Will, which sets out how people want their money, property and possessions to be distributed after their death. In situations when a person dies without a Will, rules dictate how the individual’s estate is allocated, which may not be as they would wish. It is also important to update a Will if personal circumstances have changed, for example if someone marries, divorces or adopts a child.

Rachel Jones, Fundraising Manager at St Richard’s Hospice explains why the campaign is important. ‘We know that writing a Will is something many people don’t like to think about. We are encouraging people to make an appointment with one of the campaign’s participating solicitors so they know that if they died, everything would be organised for their loved ones left behind’.

Worcester Music Festival is about many things – hundreds of free gigs across the city, entertainment on the streets, all of which raises thousands of pounds for charity.

The weekend event also runs a series of workshops which aim to nurture our musical passions and interests.

he organisers hope to make this a festival for all the family. With everything from singing and ukulele beginner’s classes to a young rocker’s disco, all ages and abilities are catered for.

Over the course of the weekend the festival plays host to the Express Yourself Choir, who will introduce pop songs as you have never before heard them as well as sing- and dance-a-long workshops for children. The Sing Along With Eve session caters for 7–15 year olds, while the Little Monsters That Rock workshop is open to crawlers and walkers alike, providing they can move in time to a power ballad!

The workshops have become a much-loved element of the festival in previous years and the growing number of things to do give attendees a chance to develop existing musical skills or even discover new ones.

‘While our main focus has always been to bring live music to local audiences, this year the development of musical skills and abilities, which we can promote through these workshops, has become a key focus for the team as well’ says Anthony Robbins the Festival Director. ‘Enhancing and developing musical skills has become an integral element of the Music Festival’s ethos and these workshops will allow us to develop on that.’

Ten years together isn’t bad for a band and since 2006 the members of Horizon Lights have been creating their own blend of folk music for audiences across Worcester and beyond.

art of their success is down to playing a mix of music from different traditions – with folk music from around this country as well as from America and countries elsewhere in Europe.

Viv Bell and Andrew Rothery were in the original line-up. The group came together at what is now the University of Worcester. Viv had previously been part of a well-known band in Newcastle Upon Tyne in the 1980s and she plays guitar and sings for Horizon Lights.

For Andrew, who plays the accordion, it was the first time he’d played folk music. ‘I had previously played piano’ he says, ‘and the transition from classical music to folk was harder than you might think. Accordion is quite a different instrument from piano when you get down to it, but folk is a flexible kind of music. With classical you are expected to play the music exactly as the composer wrote it. In folk you are a lot more free to devise your own harmonies and change the tunes around to add your own feelings.’

The line-up of Horizon Lights has changed a bit over the years and Ally Craigan the fiddle player has been with the group for a few years now, along with Graham Foord on mandolin. Both are accomplished and experienced players.

Each member of the band bringing suggestions for new songs to try, but it doesn’t always go completely to plan. ‘We might argue a bit about what we should play!’ says Andrew, ‘someone might bring a suggestion along which the others might not like, but we settle on new tunes which results in us always having new sets to play.

Audiences love the contrast and we are always encouraging each other to try new things out. It would start to sound the same if we constantly played the same kind of tune!’

Over the summer they’ve played at a number of events including a charity gig and other local celebrations. A lot of their performances are in support of good causes as well as playing at folk events. This is a band happy to come together for the love of playing to different audiences. Their Christmas gig has become an annual event and last year’s was at The Talbot in Knightwick. It attracts a loyal crowd who love their music.

Come the autumn, they’re planning to hold a special anniversary gig alongside other invited performers. Keep an eye on this magazine where we’ll publish the details – the current plan is to hold it in October.

night must fall THE PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

BY EMLYN WILLIAMS The Original Theatre Company and Salisbury Playhouse in association with Eastbourne Theatres present the national tour of Emlyn Williams’s psychological thriller, NIGHT MUST FALL, directed by Luke Sheppard and starring Gwen Taylor (Barbara, Coronation Street, Heartbeat) as Mrs Bramson alongside Daragh O’Malley (Sharpe) as Inspector Belsize.

When charming, smooth-talking Dan arrives at old Mrs Bramson’s remote woodland home, he soon ingratiates his way into her life and that of her niece, Olivia. But when a local woman goes missing and is later found murdered, Olivia begins to suspect her aunt’s new private assistant. She resolves to find out the truth.

Emlyn Williams wrote NIGHT MUST FALL in 1935 and played the lead role in the first stage production. The play was noted for its exploration of the killer’s complex psychological state, a step forward for its genre. Robert Montgomery starred in the film version in 1937 and Albert Finney in the 1964 re-make.

Night Must Fall will be appearing at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th October.
