Prep School for Puppies Did you know that the first few weeks of a puppy’s life are crucial to helping them become happy, well-adjusted members of the family? Good breeders start socialising their puppies from birth, and this should be continued by new owners from the moment they bring their puppy home. Dogs Trust Dog School supports owners to help their puppies learn to enjoy the world, feeling confident and relaxed no matter what they encounter. It is vital that owners ensure their new puppies are exposed to a range of social situations - meeting people and other dogs, being handled, visiting new places - in a happy, enjoyable way. Always pair new experiences with pleasant things like treats and games so puppies won’t feel worried about these situations when they’re older. New puppies should also be exposed to a range of noises in a gradual and always enjoyable way so that they don’t develop phobias like firework fear later in life. At Dog School training classes, noises are presented at such low volumes that puppies do not respond negatively, with volumes gradually increasing throughout progressive sessions.

For more ways to make life for you and your dog a walk in the park, visit Dogs Trust Dog School. This national network of experienced trainers provides fun, educational courses for all dog owners. Based on up-to-date scientific research, our trainers use only reward-based training methods to help you enhance the bond between you and your dog. Small classes of six dogs and two trainers mean you get the one-on-one time you need to learn effectively and most importantly, have fun! Courses are five weeks long, plus a free introductory session and cost £50. Classes take place across Worcestershire.

Recipe

meg's pasta soup from Meg at Roots Family Farm Shop I won’t apologise for the vagary in this recipe when it comes to quantities. This is the sort of soup that should change with the cook and the season. The elements are simple; a good base (onion, carrot, celery and garlic), tomato, vegetable stock, pasta and seasonal greens, and that’s it really. It’s the sort of soup your family will ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ over, whatever the season because it is comfort food for all occasions.

Ingredients 1 Onion 1 Clove of Garlic 3 or 4 Carrots Half a head of celery Seasonal greens (cabbage, kale, chard all work well, courgettes in the summer!) A large (800g) tin of tomatoes, or jar of tomato passata, or (as in my case) a tub of leftover tomatoes that you froze at the end of the season when you were ‘tomatoed out’! Pasta - Twisted tubes or cups are good here to catch the juice and vegetables as you dunk your spoon Vegetable bouillon Salt and Pepper

To top the soup, make croutons with stale wholemeal bread, cut into dice, tossed in olive oil and finely grated parmesan then toasted in the oven. To make the soup, prepare and dice the onion, carrot and celery, sauté in a little olive oil with the lid on the pan so that they are softening, not browning. Add the garlic and sauté for a few more minutes. Add the tomatoes and bring to the simmer. Now let the soup down with some vegetable bouillon, ‘Organic Marigold Bouillon’ is a brand that I frequently use but I make a more dilute stock than the instructions (about half rate) as I like to taste my fresh vegetables. This is a matter of personal preference. In the winter we prefer a more ‘stewy soup’ and use less stock, in the summer a lighter soup seems more appropriate and so more stock is used. When the pan is simmering add the pasta. Again, personal preference, a couple of handfuls? The pasta will then cook at simmering point with occasional stirring. Test a piece of pasta and when you are happy that it is cooked, add the shredded greens. Allow to simmer for a few more minutes and then it is ready to serve. You can add a teaspoon of pesto, salt and pepper to taste if you like. Sprinkle the baked croutons on the top.

10 years of all about ‘So how did it start?’ is a question I am often asked when people find out I run All About Magazines. Until 2009 my working life was spent in the voluntary sector, but with the arrival of two small children work had to change, which is when the idea of starting a community magazine came along. I really liked the fact a magazine could contribute something to the local community, while helping local businesses at the same time. I was nervous about the idea of starting a magazine, but I took the jump just before Christmas 2008. I gave myself two months to produce the first magazine in time for March and I spent £500 on software to create adverts and to layout the magazine. I had to quickly learn how to use the software and with the money invested, there was no going back! As soon as the New Year came, I had to start selling advertising space, to pay for the cost of

printing. Fortunately, local businesses loved the idea and so the first magazine went to print on time. Together with family and friends, we then delivered 2,500 magazines to homes around Cradley and Colwall. Things have grown a lot since then. Today we print 32,000 magazines, in three entirely unique editions covering St Johns and villages, Malvern and the area West of the Hills. My job is still designing the adverts, laying out the magazine pages, chatting to local businesses and readers plus a hundred and one other tasks involved in running a small business. An idea that started in a back room, with just me and a computer, has today grown into a business employing five people, plus work for dozens of deliverers. Tina takes care of a lot of the sales of

Here is what some long standing customers have said: The book has been brilliant for promoting my business. To be honest, mainly due to its good reputation. I would highly recommend the book to anyone as it has generated a lot of work for me with customers then recommending my services to others. Thanks to Sascha and the team at All About Magazines for your help and support in helping to promote my local business. Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary. Wesley Small, W.S.S Roofing & Building Solutions Ltd 01684 541366 / 07926 861565 As a new business start-up, we were very grateful to Sascha and All About Magazines for finding an advertising package to suit our budget. The phone is always busy after the magazines hit the doormats and we really appreciate the business All About Magazines generate. Colin Hadley, Oven Wizards Hereford & Worcester West 01885 400337 / 07812 440780 I have been advertising with All About since they started 10 years ago, and have nothing but praise for Sascha and her team. They are consistently helpful and professional, and assist with any changes required very efficiently. I wish them every success for the coming 10 years and beyond. Matt Scriven, Branchworks Tree Surgery 20 07931 808 121 / 01684 437481

I knew when I saw the magazine back in 2009 it was a platform I wanted my business associated with, and I haven’t been disappointed. Sascha and her team have been fantastic to work with, they helped promote our business to the unsuspecting public in 2010 and we haven’t missed a month since. It has been a privilege and an honour to be part of such a fantastic product, thank you Sascha for your vision and delivery. Rob Weale, Smith Weale Associates, Independent Financial Advice Practice 01684 577037 We have supported each other from the beginning and the amount of business advertising in All About has generated for me over the years has been astronomical. I would never not advertise in the magazine. It raises my profile, its professional style and attitude fit my business values, it works hand in hand. Thank you very much Team All About, it has been brilliant to be part of the 10 year journey. Congratulations from Nick, That Smy Plumber - 07914 245015

advertising space and looks after our customers, Julie works from the office on finance, sales, our website and a host of other tasks. In 2013 my husband James came on board to look after the articles, What’s On listings, and magazine distribution, which is also managed by Mike in Malvern and Martin and Diane in Worcester. We are supported by a huge team of deliverers who walk the streets in all weathers to deliver the thousands of copies through the doors of homes each edition. A big thanks to all of them! I would genuinely like to thank the staff for their hard work and support over the years. It is only thanks to them that All About Magazines continues to thrive. There’s also a big thank you to you, dear reader, for reading the magazine and using the businesses and services advertised

in the magazine. Not only that, our readers contribute so much, from articles and events to ideas and comments about how we can constantly make the magazines even better. Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank our customers, the businesses and individuals who advertise with us. In ten years we have supported more than one thousand businesses locally, some of which are long-established, longterm customers and some who are starting up. We are proud to be a local, independent company, celebrating everything that’s good about the area. My work as magazine editor over the past decade has been a pleasure. I’m looking forward to the next ten years of supporting everything local!

Many many congratulations to Sascha and all the Team at All About Magazines on your 10th Anniversary. It’s a great achievement. (We are also celebrating 10 years of business in March too!) We have been advertising in the All About Magazines regularly for several years now – it’s so easy to work with Sascha to update our advert for each edition. Customers always mention they have seen our advert so we know it works for us... GOOD LUCK for the future and at least another 10 years of All About Magazines promoting all things local to our area. Mark, Newent Plant Centre - 01531 670 121 We have been delighted with the All About West of the Hills magazine and with the personal service Sascha has given us over the last ten years - in fact we find it hard to believe that ten years have gone by! The All About brand has gone from strength to strength and we regularly receive good quality leads as a result of our advertising. Sascha and the team are always on hand to help with any design or changes and pride themselves on giving the best of service to their clients, as we do to ours, and we wish them many more years of success! author talk There’s a chance to hear a talk in April by the best-selling Worcester-based author Dilip Sarkar MBE. A prolific writer and accomplished speaker, Dilip is an internationally recognised expert on the Second World War - especially the Battle of Britain, having enjoyed a unique relationship with 'Churchill's Few'. Fascinated by the Second World War, especially the human experience involved, as a young man Dilip realised that although the memories of many famous war heroes had been published, an infinite number of survivors had vanished into obscurity. Since the mid-1980s, therefore, Dilip has recorded the experiences of innumerable Battle of Britain pilots and the relatives of casualties, leading to publication of original research and the collation of an extensive photographic archive. In 2003, Dilip was made an MBE for 'Services to Aviation History' and has now written nearly forty books. The latest is due to be published by Pen & Sword this spring; Arnhem 1944: The Human Tragedy of The Bridge Too Far tells the stories of individual casualties, offering a fresh narrative and approach to the great airborne battle for the bridges across the Rhine at Arnhem in the Netherlands.

On Sunday 7th April, Dilip gives two uniquely illustrated presentations at the University of Worcester. In the first, 'I Knew the Few', he will outline the stories of some of the Battle of Britain pilots he was privileged to know. In the second, 'The Blast of War', he foocuses on his wider work, including more detail from his forthcoming book on Arnhem. Together with his wife, Karen, Dilip has spent much time in Arnhem in addition to interviewing and corresponding with relatives of casualties, allowing their stories to be told with sensitivity and dignity. During the afternoon, special guest Jim Nicolson will give a presentation on his uncle, Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson, the only pilot of Fighter Command to receive the Victoria Cross in the Second World War. The event takes place on Sunday 7th April on the St John’s Campus, University of Worcester, between 1pm and 5pm. Tickets must be booked in advance, please visit www.ourfinesthour.net

All About...

allotments Renting an allotment is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, meet people and eat healthily. There are more than 25 sites across Worcester, including several on the west side of the city. Pete Parry is Chairman of the Worcester Allotment Forum and tells us more.

What are the best things about having an allotment? I rent an allotment on Comer Road and there are many great things about it. One is the increase in my physical exercise – it’s a chance to get out and get some exercise and fresh air. Everything I produce is organic and you know exactly where it’s come from. There are also benefits in terms of mental health - getting out to the allotment is very good for dealing with stress. Tending an allotment isn’t a lonely pastime, it’s a very friendly community that attracts people from all walks of life. It’s a great way of combating social isolation because you’re all involved with a common cause and everyone helps out. We enjoy social events with barbecues, bonfires and soup days. Last October we held the Worcester City Allotment Competition, a very enjoyable event at the Guildhall when 240 allotment tenants pitted their gardening skills against each other!

What if I’m new to gardening? You have nothing to worry about. There are plenty of more experienced people about and you’ll always find someone willing to give friendly advice. Newcomers are made very welcome and you don’t have to follow the traditional idea of what to do on an allotment plot. Some people have traditional plots, but equally you’ll find a new generation of plot-holders doing it differently. Some use the nodig principle by adding layers of mulch on top of the soil while others have made raised beds. A full plot will take up more of your time, but half plots are available, some people even maintain a quarter. It all comes at a modest cost. A half-plot costs £29.50 per year and a full plot is £59 per year.

What else do people do with their plots? You can ask permission to keep chickens or rabbits and some people do this but they need to

24

be seen every day to ensure that their health and safety is not compromised. I’ve got chickens at the end of my garden, we eat the eggs and the waste goes into compost. I’m also lucky to live close enough to go and pick something if we run out of veg! If you’ve completed a training course, you can even ask permission to keep bees on your allotment. Worcester is fortunate to have so many sites and these are havens for wildlife. The city even has one of the highest populations of slow worms in the country. Allotments are good for wildlife and we encourage people not to be too tidy and to keep a small patch of their plot less tidy, to create a habitat for other creatures. If you live in a flat or a house with no garden, an allotment is a chance to get out and enjoy open space. Sometimes, nothing beats escaping outside for a couple of hours, the peace and quiet, with only the robins for company. Art

worcester society of artists Worcester Society of Artists meets every week in St Johns, with a busy programme of events. There are talks, demonstrations, competitions and painting evenings. Prospective members are very welcome to come along for the evening to see if they’d like to join. There are no qualifying tests for new members as the basic principle is to encourage the appreciation of art, so members will range from complete beginners to accomplished artists, but the majority fall into the category of enthusiastic amateurs. While there is no formal teaching within the group, all members learn from each other and share their skills and knowledge. The Society was founded in 1947, the result of a Government drive to maintain an interest in the arts while giving a boost to civilian morale in the years following the second world war. Since then it has moved around the city, including time at the Victoria Institute, The Swan Theatre and The Worcester Arts Workshop. Eventually The Mission Hall on Bromwich Road

became its new home where today the society thrives. The Society has an Annual Exhibition at Worcester Art Gallery, which has occurred every year of its existence. This is the highlight of the club’s year and is open to all members, however inexperienced. There is also a permanent display in The Swan Theatre, another in the Worcester Guildhall, a small display in the Crowngate window, and a number of other exhibitions each year. Every year, the Society holds an exhibition and the latest, between 1st December and 26th January, was the seventy first. It is one of the highlights of the club’s year of which its members are rightly proud, exhibiting their work at the City Art Gallery on Foregate Street. There is also a permanent display in The Swan Theatre, another in the Worcester Guildhall, a small display in a Crowngate window, as well as a number of other exhibitions each year. www.worcesterart.co.uk

lower broadheath shop 2019 promises to be a busy and exciting year in Lower Broadheath, as the community shop opens. You may be aware that over the past 18 months, since the old village shop closed, a small group of local residents formed Lower Broadheath Community Shop Management Committee. Since then they’ve been working tirelessly to plan, raise funds and open a new Community Shop in the car park of the Bell Inn on the junction of Bell Lane with the Martley Road. On Monday 4th February Lower Broadheath Community Shop will open to the public. Opening hours will be from 8am to 6pm from Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 12.30pm on Saturdays and from 8.30am to 10.30am on Sundays. The Community Shop will start to deliver many benefits to the village. It will be somewhere to pop in and buy the items you need, stocking locally-sourced goods as well as major brands and those special little extras you might want. Just as importantly, it will also provide a place to meet people, make friends, have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake and bring community spirit to the village. The volunteers who have made this happen are particularly proud that they have secured Post Office facilities for the village once again, staffed by a team of trained local volunteers.

The Post Office will be open between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday and 10am until noon on Saturdays. During January the interior of the shop has been taking shape. The team were busy training volunteers, building shelves and ordering stock. Over the past few weeks many villagers and shop shareholders have popped in to have a look when the door has been open and have been delighted by what they have seen. The shop will be overseen by the committee and run by part-time Manager Christine and a team of around 40 volunteers. Although this is a great start, there are still some gaps on the rota. They will always be on the lookout for further volunteers and offers of help. Current volunteers pledge to work anything from a 3-hour slot each month, to numerous slots each week.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT Anyone willing to give some time to this exciting new venture will be very welcome. Please contact Monica Longley on (01905) 333314 or email info@lowerbroadheathshop.com and say what time you can spare. All offers will be very welcome! Don’t forget, Monday 4th February will be quite a day in the life of Lower Broadheath as the new community shop opens. Its not just about the volunteers, the shop needs customers too! Do please pop in and have a look at what the shop has to offer; you can be certain to get a friendly ‘hello’ and a genuine smile from one of the keen volunteers!

Worcester arts workshop An evening of performance before Christmas saw the re-launch of Worcester Arts Workshop. The transformation of the building on Sansome Street in the city centre has begun with a fresh new look in the public spaces, including The Third Space, a performance area for music and events. Over two years, the Arts Workshop will expand its programme of events and activities, with a focus on emerging artists and the development of audiences and partnerships with other arts and educational organisations. The two year transformation project is being led by Hannah Phillips who took on the job as Director of Transformation last summer. ‘Worcester Arts Workshop is treasured by the many people who come here to learn, explore and socialise’ says Hannah. ‘I really hope that moving forward we can welcome many more visitors, for a coffee with friends, to learn a new skill or perfect an old one and to feel at home within an accessible and exciting centre for arts and learning.’ Worcester Arts Workshop has received support and investment from Worcester City Council, The Elmley Foundation & Bransford Trust. Worcestershire County Council continues to provide their support and Worcester Arts Council has provided the new dance floor in the theatre space. There are partnerships with other local

organisations to provide assistance for young people and emerging artists. ‘I am very grateful for the support of our investors and advocates, the achievements we have made so far would not have been possible without their generosity’ Hannah says. ‘With hard work and their continuous support, Worcester Arts Workshop is re-emerging as the leading inclusive arts and learning centre for a diverse future generation of artists, audiences and participants in Worcester.’ FEBRUARY HALF-TERM AT WORCESTER ARTS WORKSHOP Shadow Puppetry - Tuesday 19 February, 10.30am-12pm, tickets £8 A fun workshop for children who like creating stories and enjoy crafty activities. Theatre News Bill Kenwright Presents

the lady vanishes

Inspired by the Hitchcock classic

Win a pair of tickets to this show at Malvern Theatres.

Celebrated Emmy award-winning actress Juliet Mills and her award-winning husband Maxwell Caulfield lead the star cast in the latest instalment of the Classic Thriller Theatre Company. The cast also features Lorna Fitzgerald, fresh from her shock departure from the role of Abi Branning in BBC’s EastEnders, Matt Barber, Atticus Aldridge in Downtown Abbey, Robert Duncan (Drop The Dead Donkey), Philip Lowrie (Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street) and Ben Nealon (Soldier Soldier).

Please answer the following question:

the lady vanishes

Socialite Iris is travelling home to England on the train when an accident introduces her to the mild-mannered Miss Froy. After her travelling companion suddenly disappears, Iris is perplexed to find that all the other passengers deny ever having seen her. With the help of urbane musician Max she turns detective and together they become drawn into a complex web of European intrigue as they try to solve the mystery of why the lady vanished. The Lady Vanishes will be appearing on stage at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd March. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
