4. Malvern Concert Club's autumn programme The programme includes a performance by the internationally renowned pianist Imogen Cooper. A glittering career has seen her play with the world’s great orchestras. She will perform on Thursday 27th October at Malvern Theatres.

In November, Stile Antico presents ‘The Touches of Sweet Harmony’, the musical world of William Shakespeare with music from both medieval and contemporary composers. The concert is on Thursday 24th November at Malvern Theatres.

5. Malvern Festival Chorus The Malvern Festival Chorus sings Handel’s Alexander’s Feast at Malvern Theatres this November.

Premiered in 1736, Alexander’s Feast quickly won over audiences and became one of Handel’s best-loved compositions during his lifetime. Alexander’s Feast is considered by many to be a stylistic turning point in his work, away from opera towards oratorio, with the chorus now playing a significant role. Joined by Regency Sinfonia and conducted by Richard Knight, the performance on Saturday 26th November begins at 7.30 pm and is at Malvern Theatres.

WEST FEST 2017 West Malvern’s annual community festival West Fest is looking for a new clutch of enthusiastic local people to inject further vitality and ideas to develop it into 2017 and beyond.

Whatever your skills and talents, there’s a chance to find out more when West Fest hosts an open event at 8pm on 6th October at The Brewers Arms, West Malvern.

Grants to this year’s supported organisations will be awarded, and some of the current team will talk about the history and development of the festival. There is an open invitation to join in to make West Fest 2017 even better, so please do come along to find out how you can contribute.

Now entering its twelfth successful year, West Fest celebrates local talent across a range of forms - music, art, dance, craft, food, sport - for the benefit of thousands on the day and, through its profits, provides thousands of pounds to local charities and organisations to enhance their work in the community. The festival is organised by a year-round core team and brought to life on the day by many dozens of local volunteers and participants. www.west-fest.org.uk

U3A DRAMA GROUP The U3A Drama Group is running sessions to help individuals improve their performance skills. Taking place at Malvern Cube, the idea is to perform or direct selected scenes from a wide range of plays where the age, gender and experience of the participants will neither affect the choice of role they perform nor their approach to directing. There’s also the chance to learn and improve the use of voice, accent, mime and other skills. The sessions take place on the first and third Mondays of each month from 2pm until 4pm.

FLYING HIGH CONCERT There’s a concert at the start of October to celebrate the life of a local man who passed away last year. John Warner who was 76 spent a long career working as a scientist before leaving Qinetiq for an active retirement. After a cycling accident in August 2015, the Air Ambulance flew him to hospital in Birmingham where, despite excellent care from staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, he lost his life.

The concert, called ‘Flying High’ takes place on Saturday 1st October, 7pm, at The Chase School in Malvern. The programme of music will be performed by Malvern Chase Brass Band and Tewkesbury Town Band, two bands which John had played with.

Tickets can be bought on the door for £7 (£5 concessions) with free admission for children of primary school age and below.

Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

MALVERN SOUP MalvernSoup is a new social event which helps local good causes to raise funds.

People coming along, pay a suggested donation of £4, for which they get a bowl of soup.

Four local projects then have four minutes each to present their ideas and explain why they need money.

After that, the audience votes and the winning project receives the takings from the event. Three months later they return to the event to present a rundown of how the money has helped them.

Different venues will be used for MalvernSoup, with the next event due to take place in early December.

the film orchestra The Film Orchestra is the first amateur orchestra of its kind in the country. Meeting regularly in Malvern, it performs music from the world of film, television and gaming new members are always welcome.

The orchestra was started four years ago by a local teacher, Jane Whittle. ‘I expected we would only have around 15 children coming every week to our rehearsals’ says Jane. ‘Instead, we now have five different orchestras, three wind bands as well as two jazz bands, a saxophone ensemble & choir!’

‘Film and television music has a specific appeal’ says Jane, ‘not only to our musicians but also for our audiences. I was with our orchestra in Birmingham recently at their first concert and it was incredible. Around a third of the audience were children, who sang along and danced during the performance! I do think what we’re doing is the way to keep musicians playing and performing in the future.’

The orchestra appeals to older musicians as well. ‘As well as younger members, we have some people who learnt as a child and haven’t picked up an instrument in forty years’ says Jane.

‘We have teachers spread across our various orchestras who can give returning musicians a few lessons before they are back up and playing again.’

The music performed by the orchestra is often chosen by the musicians themselves. ‘It can be hard to find the musical scores for everything’ says Jane, ‘and I am constantly trawling the internet to obtain music from Europe and the United States.’

Providing musical scores along with paying for venue hire and the services of professional musicians does not come cheap. The organisation is run by volunteers and money raised from performances goes towards the costs. The

orchestra is now building its own library of musical scores and hopes to recoup some of the cost by hiring them out to other groups.

While members of The Film Orchestra need to have completed higher grades for their instrument, there is also a Community Orchestra meeting every month in Colwall, for musicians who have reached Grade Four or higher. ‘We have a high proportion of young players and this is often their first experience of playing in an orchestra, which can be quite daunting’ says Jane. ‘Within half an hour of starting they discover its great fun as we always aim to make rehearsals relaxed and enjoyable.’

The Film Orchestra’s next concert features the music of John Williams and incorporates big screen projections and a light show. ‘This makes the experience more exciting for the audience’ says Jane. ‘What we’re doing is quite different, and we are getting noticed. I am regularly contacted by people from all over the world who want to learn more about what we do.’

A new approach to Driving Lessons for Teenagers My service is a new approach to assist PARENTS to save money by helping them teach their own children to ‘drive safely for life’. This being without the need to spend £25 - £30 per hour on normal driving lessons, which usually add up to around £1,000 or more in total to pass a test.

You may be aware the format of the current Driving Test is due to radically change in May 2017. There also is the need to offer ‘Safe and Structured Driver Training’ to ALL young learner drivers. My service offers Specific Targeted Training for Parents, delivered by regular weekly emails, to not only help them focus on safe teaching practices for their children but to advise on what to expect with the New driving Test. It is to guide parents on how to use structured teaching methods to develop car control, assist on good decision making and help parents to develop their own skills. This so they clearly know what they are doing and how to set structured goals during the teaching.

The cost for my service is set at £30 per month to be paid by Standing Order until the Test is passed. This amounts to around £180 in total instead of £1,000 and these savings will easily cover insurance and petrol costs for this self teaching method within the family. In addition, feedback opportunities

on individual progress for targeted teaching can be added, plus, if requested, ‘one to one’ tuition and/or Practical Test Assessment for parents/learner together (at extra cost) should this be requested at random times.

Having helped my six children through this process as teenagers and having taught three of my 12 grandchildren to pass their test so far, I know the problems a parent will face during this process and I doubt anything will crop up that I have not had to cope with before! So the aim of this service is to help parents to understand how to control the pace of teaching their own children in their own car. And to help develop a positive bond with their teenagers, with as much harmony as possible, by offering something that their children want but may not be able to enjoy if normal lessons are financially out of reach.

apple cinnamon Cake A lovely spiced cake which makes the most of autumn fruit.

1. Preheat oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Grease and line one 23cm (9inch) sandwich tin and place on a baking tray.

2. Sift the flour and spices into a large mixing bowl; rub the margarine in until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

3. Mix the sliced apples with the soft brown sugar.

4. Stir the apples into the flour and mix in enough milk to make a thick batter.

5. Spoon the mixture into the tin and spread evenly. Sprinkle with Demerara sugar.

6. Bake for about 40- 45 minutes until firm to the touch.

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour

Ingredients • 225g self raising flour, white • 125g sunflower margarine • 100g soft brown sugar • 25ml milk • pinch cinnamon • pinch nutmeg • 350g cooking apples, peeled and sliced • 3 tbsp Demerara sugar for sprinkling

autumn at malvern cube From music and education, to exercise and social events, there is a wealth of entertainment and activities going on at Malvern Cube this autumn. Here are just some of the highlights taking place between now and the end of the year.

he Saturday Indoor Food and Craft Market began again in September. Taking place every Saturday between 10am and 2pm, it’s a chance to browse the stalls of local food and drink producers, which in recent weeks have included La Delice, The Fold as well as local butchers and fruit and veg shops. There are also stalls selling craft and gift items and the event takes place indoors which means it can continue unaffected by the autumn weather. Traders can book a place at the market for £15 a week, with a discount for longer term bookings - get in touch with Bryn at The Cube if you’d like more details.

There are dozens of other regular activities taking place every week. From performing arts groups for young people to continuing education from the University of the Third Age, there is truly something for all age groups and interests.

Regular health and fitness groups range from Extend Exercise (over 60s) though to yoga, pilates, zumba gold, pound, boot camp, Mojo fitness, Circuit Training and contemporary dance for all.

There are weekly adult and youth theatre groups, some specialising in work with mental health support and adults with learning difficulties. The Cube often hosts professional theatre performances in its 200 capacity theatre.

Concert

memorial ground The Malvern choir Severn Voices is planning an autumn concert to mark the end of The Battle of the Somme. Taking place in November at Christ Church, the concert includes music from German, French and British composers as well as the performance of a new choral work.

Memorial Ground has been written by David Lang and was commissioned to be performed by choirs across the country around the date of the end of the Battle of the Somme.

William Coleman who is the Musical Director of Severn Voices says: ‘This concert takes place at Christchurch on Avenue Road, which was the parish church of many of the ordinary Malvern men who gave their lives during the Somme. Some of us in the choir even have family connections with those men, and for us it is important to remember them through music, which gives us an emotional space in which to reflect on what these men went through, and revisit the loss and grief, which their families went through. Hopefully in our programme you will find a sense of healing too, in that our concert brings together beautiful and moving music from

German, French and British composers.’

The programme includes movements from Brahms’ German Requiem, choral songs by Ledbury composer, John Frith - A Young Man in April - (using poems by Rupert Brook) and music

by Gloucester composers Ivor Gurney and his friend Herbert Howells. Severn Voices will be joined for the performance by soloists Lynn Marie Boudreau and Peter Wilman from Welsh National Opera.

The Concert takes place on Saturday November 12th, 7.30pm at Christ Church, Avenue Road, Great Malvern. Admission is £7.50 for adults, with free entry for accompanied children under 16 years old. dates for your diary GREAT MALVERN CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL This year the Great Malvern Christmas Festival takes place on Saturday 26th November.

During the daytime there is plenty of children’s entertainment at Malvern Library on Graham Road, where children can visit Father Christmas in his grotto or take part in activities.

Outside there will be folk dancing and children's rides. Around the town centre music will be provided by buskers.

An Arts and Crafts Market takes place in the Priory Grounds with a Food Market on Abbey Road next to the Abbey Gateway. Musical entertainment starts at Noon on the Belle Vue Island stage.

There will be a procession at 5.45pm leading up to the lights switch on at 6pm. This year the lights are switched on by Amy Thompson from Channel Five's Milkshake, and the actor Chris Pizzey.

BARNARDS GREEN Halloween High Jinks Saturday 29th October, from 2.30pm There will be lots for children to enjoy at this free event. As well as spooky stories, there will be face painting, apple bobbing and candyfloss, plus a giant blow-up assault course. There’s a ‘Make a Halloween Lantern’ competition as well as prizes for the best costumes on a Halloween fancy dress theme. Children can enter the competitions on the day.

BARNARDS GREEN Christmas Extravaganza Saturday 3rd December, from 10.30am This popular local event returns for another year.

Children will be able to meet Father Christmas and there will be lots of other entertainment including a magic show. The Play Bus will be along, popular children’s characters will be wandering around the Green. zest 4 life Perhaps it’s a friendly smile or the promise of conversation over a lunchtime meal. People come to Zest4Life every Wednesday for many different reasons. The weekly sessions at The Octagon Centre on Brook Farm Drive are organised by Martin Lawrence who tells us more.

ack in 2014 I was a Trustee at The Octagon Community Centre when I started advertising the Zest4Life lunch club. A surprising number of people in Malvern live on their own and this was a way to reconnect people. There was no charge, but we scattered some money boxes around so people could donate a pound or two if they wanted.

We’re a not for profit organisation and operate through donations as well as money raised by three craft artists who make greetings cards and crochet items. Brook Farm Community Association have supported us from the start by providing use of the centre.

We were running at a loss, but now food and produce is donated by Tesco at St Peter’s (in Worcester), from the Community Forest and by a local allotment association. Whether its loaves of bread, fruit or veg, we turn it into meals on Wednesday and any extra meals are put into containers for people to take home.

Two years later we have between 30 and 50 people each Wednesday, from 11.30am to 2pm, sometimes carrying on even longer if we sit and chat!

you must meet Gordon’, who has been building and racing cars for years. Whatever you’re into, you’ll usually find someone who shares your interest.

One lady came along who was in her eighties and it turns out she was originally from Austria.

During the war she worked for the British, intercepting communications from German pilots.

People ask me what we’ll be doing in a month’s time and I say ‘it’s up to the people who come through the door’. We might have a choir to perform for us. Students from South Worcestershire College have been along to do people’s hair and other treatments. I like a bit of fun and like to read out jokes or print them on the menu. It creates a talking point for people.

The hot food is made by Rachel and Eric, while a young lad called Nick makes the salads. We really could do with someone to help us with some of the other tasks, there’s always an awful lot of washing up to do afterwards!

One person said to me ‘It’s completely changed my life. I can meet different people, I have a weekly purpose in life and I know that I’m worth talking to.’

When people arrive they chose a place to sit or get in the queue to pick what they want for lunch. We have a variety of hot dishes and salad, followed by bread and butter pudding or yoghurt.

Zest 4 Life

Everybody is welcome, just come along on a Wednesday at 11.30am! If I know somebody is new, I will quickly get them introduced to one of the regulars. A real cross-section comes along every week. Some prefer to sit on their own but I pop over and ask ‘how are you?’ or if people are new I introduce them to others. They might say ‘I’m interested in Motor Racing’ and I’ll say ‘then

Make sure you sit directly facing your desktop computer with your eyes level with the top of the screen. This means your head will have a very slight downward tilt to look at the screen. This will gently open the joints at the back of the neck and stop the muscles from over contracting.

2. Television

If necessary rearrange your furniture so that you face

your television directly. Far too many people have a sofa that is at 90 degrees to their TV so that they always have to turn their neck to watch it.

3. Overhead work

Particularly as one gets older the neck becomes less tolerant of hyper-extension. Two of the commonest causes of trouble are painting ceilings and trimming tall hedges. These activities also put the shoulders at risk of impingement syndrome. Try to get help if necessary.

4. Pillow

We spend around a third of our lives in bed so it is important to have a good pillow. The aim of the pillow is to keep the head at 90 degrees to the shoulder when side-lying. There are loads of different sorts. At the clinic we sell the “Sleeprrr Pillow” which we think is one of the best.

5. Exercise

Breast stroke swimming is a common source of neck trouble due to the head position. Learn front or back crawl instead. Similarly cycling, particularly with dropped handlebars can lead to the same problem. The bike shop will help with any changes required.

dealing with a crisis

t the end of a busy volunteer day here at the temple I went with 3 year old Felix to feed our much loved bunnies, Peter and Poppet. After a while I thought it strange that Poppet wasn’t coming out of the hutch, I discovered that she’d broken her leg very badly.

The next 48 hours included a frantic journey to the emergency out of hours vet, research about rabbit fractures, transferring her back to our local vet, and 6 hours of anxiety as we waited to hear whether or not she’d made it through her operation. Rabbits are difficult to treat because of their size, the fact that vets get much more practice on cats and dogs, and their susceptibility to not making it through general anaesthetics.

We never know when a crisis is going to occur.

During a time of stress, even a small event can feel like a crisis and tip us over into not coping.

Here’s a check-list to help you when you feel like you’re losing control.

1. Breathe. Take a slow breath in and try to remember to keep breathing slowly and deeply.

Feel the contact of your feet on the ground. If you can reduce your stress response you’ll be able to deal with whatever is happening more effectively.

2. Seek support. This is important in the moment of crisis, as when I asked Felix to run for help, and as time goes on, I let my friend know what was happening and received her support. Even if you don’t usually ask for help, do it!

3. Prioritise. If a crisis occurs, don’t feel you have to continue coping with the rest of your life in the way you always have. Delegate any crucial tasks and let go of the rest.

4. Don’t rush. This can be very difficult in the heat of the moment, but give yourself a little space to consider your choices before you take any action. If you can find some calm, this will

also help to steady others who are affected by the situation.

5. Be kind to yourself. We don’t all show the best of ourselves during a crisis, and that’s okay.

Try to forgive yourself and try to forgive others for the way they behave when they’re under pressure.

6. Allow space later for resting and processing.

We were very physically tired for a couple of days afterwards and we tried to give ourselves rest. I also felt upset a couple of times and I let myself feel these feelings without rushing through them.

7. One day at a time. If the crisis is ongoing, make plans for the future if you can and then try not to dwell on it – just deal with what needs to be done today, or during the next hour, or during the next five minutes. Keep taking care of yourself and keep being kind to yourself.

On the night of Poppet’s big operation we were delighted to pick her up and bring her home.

She was now a tripod bunny - her back hind leg had been amputated - and we put her with her dear companion Peter. He immediately started grooming her, especially the ear that she couldn’t reach any more with her absent leg.

A week on and the wound is healing very well.

She’s hopping around happily, eating well, still completely in love with Peter, and visibly enjoying her life. A happy bunny!

Serve with a dusting of icing sugar, whipped cream or creme fraiche

1. For the pastry, sieve the flour and sugar into a large mixing bowl, add the cubed butter and rub all together between your fingers and thumbs till the mix resembles fine bread crumbs 2. In a small bowl, beat the egg together with 4 tablespoons of ice cold water and pour into the flour mixture 3. Slowly mix the ingredients to form a dough, but don’t over work it

4. Knead the dough lightly on a clean floured surface then wrap in cling film and refrigerate for at least 30 mins

5. For the frangipane, beat butter and sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy. Crack the eggs into the bowl one at a time beating well each time. Add the ground almonds, mix well and put to one side

For the Pastry: 375g plain flour, 15g sugar 225g unsalted butter, cut into cubes 1 free range egg 4tbsp ice-cold water

6. Preheat the oven to 180C/250F/Gas4. Dust the worktop with flour and roll the dough out thinly, and line either one 25cm tart ring or 6/8 individual rings, trim away any excess 7.Spoon the frangipane into the tart case/s to about half way up the sides. Smooth the surface and cover evenly with the fruit 8. Bake for 30-40 minutes (15-20 mins for smaller individual tarts) or until the pastry is crisp golden brown and the fruit is tender 9. Remove from oven and serve warm, or chill and serve later

How boring would it be if everyone was the same and had the same sense of ‘taste’?

This is the beauty of being the buyer for your own independent gift shop. I get to choose my own stock; I have the job of a ‘professional shopper’ (not a bad job really?).

When I buy something I always ask myself, who is going to ‘love’ this? The other measurement is always ‘is it new’ and ‘have I seen it anywhere’ before? When it is ‘new’ to me then I know it will generally be new to my customers, and then I get excited!

However, you do always have the problem that everyone loves something new but they also want me to continue to stock everything they already like. I need a shop with expandable sides!

So Christmas buying and trends this year was a mixture of trying to solve the above problem.

For ‘new’ I have some stunning beaten metal tea-light and candle holders. They are darker on the outside and then glow and reflect beautifully on the inside. These are right on trend with their mixed metal hand-made feel.

So lots of new stock arriving, but I also had fun picking the new colour-ways for the season for my ‘must-haves’, lots of lovely deep russets, golds and greens in handbags, scarves and gloves. Especially lovely are some toasty lined gloves that have little pearl jewel coloured buttons sewn on the outside and catch the light.

Something old, something new, is a pretty old adage but it seems to work for me!

However I have also chosen a fabulous selection of Angel Chimes (these are the ones that gently spin round when you light the tea-light) and are ever popular for children and grandchildren to watch.

I went buying to try and find something different for the tricky subject of ‘male gifts’. I did get excited when I saw a new starter company that was selling ‘Big Cheese Making Kits’, they are brilliant. The kit contains all you need to make 40 individual batches of cheese, including mozzarella, goat’s cheese and ‘paneer’. You are buying someone a hobby that you get to enjoy too! They even have one to make ‘halloumi’ for any vegetarians.

Theatre News Dead Sheep Limited in collaboration with Cahoots Theatre Company present

Jonathan Maitland’s record-breaking debut play, DEAD SHEEP is set to appear at Malvern Theatres from Monday 14th to Saturday 19th November.

Steve Nallon stars as Margaret Thatcher, having portrayed her for many years on the political puppetry satire Spitting Image. Paul Bradley (Holby City) will play Geoffrey Howe, Carol Royle will play Elspeth Howe, alongside Graham Seed, Tony Bell and John Wark.

It is 1989 and a seemingly invincible Prime Minister has sacked her Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe, thinking she had nothing to fear from him; his speaking skills had, famously, been compared to those of a dead sheep. But inspired by his wife Elspeth - a formidable and witty feminist, whose relationship with Thatcher was notoriously frosty – Howe overcame his limitations to destroy Mrs Thatcher’s political career…and also his own.

Dead Sheep portrays the true story of how Mrs. Thatcher, the most divisive Prime Minister of modern times, was brought down by her one time friend and political soul mate Geoffrey Howe. Using imagined dialogue to portray private scenes between the main protagonists, it recreates the events leading up to Howe’s famous 1990 speech, in which he criticised Thatcher for undermining policies on economic and monetary union in Europe, ultimately leading to her downfall and resignation.
