My Week With Marilyn B Fiona Ormiston There will always be something special about Marilyn Monroe. Many people have tried to portray her, tried to get under her skin (so to speak) or when she was alive - inside her skin. Michelle Williams trie to do just that in 'My week with Marilyn', as Kenneth Branagh does with Laurence Olivier. The film is an account from a young 23-year-old Colin Clarke who managed to work his way up to 3rd assistant to the director, who happened to be Olivier, on the Prince and the Showgirl, the 1956 film starring Marilyn Monroe. Taken from his diary account, it concentrates on one idyllic week with Monroe. A week together as beautiful as it seems, was not quite convincing (doubtful sexuality), whereas Branagh was, in his portrayal of Sir Laurence. Michelle Williams had her moments. It is without a doubt an impossible task to portray such an Enigma convincingly. I felt her voice wasn't up to scratch or her curves (really bad bottom scene in the Thames), but there are moments where Monroe comes through.

It s sad to think such an icon will always, it seems, be portrayed tragically. Monroe never had the chance to reach her potential. She had so much more to give. But it ended in 'Something's got to Give'.

Worth a watch whether you are a fan or not. See a trailer of the movie here - the website of The British Magazine Further information contact Alison Coplen at Webmaster: Ian Morrison, Porto Colom, Mallorca • Mail:
