T. HOWARD FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT The Foundation’s mission is to diversify the media and entertainment industry by increasing the number of underrepresented individuals within the industry. This is accomplished via a comprehensive recruiting program for diverse college students. The program includes the following: • an internship program that gives students industry knowledge and hands-on experience; • professional development via a comprehensive orientation that prepares students for their internship in a corporate environment; • recruiting students and providing career awareness via information about various opportunities within the industry; and 4

• raising industry awareness and recruiting companies to host T. Howard interns.

Tonight, we are here to celebrate the T. Howard Foundation for 25 years of commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in the media and entertainment industry. Congratulations to this year’s corporate honorees: AMC Networks and Univision Communications. We are grateful to both companies for their strong commitment to diversity over the years, and we are thankful for their steadfast support of the T. Howard Foundation’s mission and programs. In our increasingly multicultural world, media and entertainment companies understand that having a diverse workforce is important to staying competitive and critical to their success. Good Evening Guests, Friends and Supporters of the T. Howard Foundation. Welcome to a special commemorative evening as we celebrate 25 years of commitment and dedication to the mission of diversity and inclusion in the media and entertainment industry. Since its establishment in 1993, the Foundation has significantly expanded its programs and services. The Internship Program has turned into a year-round program, with nearly 200 interns placed last year. Our Career and Alumni Services Program refers talented alumni for full-time positions and facilitated 94 new hires in 2017, while providing ongoing professional development training and career coaching. As we grew, we cultivated and strengthened relationships with academic institutions, strategic partners, Diversity Partners, host companies, and alumni. This focus enables the Foundation to better serve the industry as a resource for diverse talent. I would also like to acknowledge an important part of this success story, The Team at T. Howard, committed to the high standards and quality of service that the industry commands and deserves for the opportunities it provides to our interns and alumni. This evening, I will take pride in introducing them to you. In closing, I would like to congratulate our distinguished honorees, AMC Networks and Univision Communications Inc., and Josh Sapan and Randy Falco, President and CEO, respectively. In 1994, the T. Howard Foundation hosted its first Dinner for Diversity at Tavern on the Green in New York City with acclaimed journalist Bernard Shaw as our honoree. At the time, we had roughly 150 guests and our first class of interns in attendance. That evening began a journey for the Foundation to change the color of the media industry by opening doors of opportunity for minority college students all over the country. This evening we celebrate a memorable moment in the Foundation’s history, twentyfive years of advancing the benefits of diversity, its positive impact on the industry and the audience we serve. Thousands of interns have passed through our doors and seized the opportunity to grow and move forward. Many are now in professional roles of impact and influence, an extraordinary accomplishment that has established the H. Taylor Howard (l.) Foundation as a leading organization for positive change. and founder Scott Weiss These achievements would not be possible without a monumental effort from both a committed staff under the leadership of Foundation President & CEO Jo Pamphile, and a dedicated Board of Directors comprised of some of the most respected leaders in the industry, under the guidance of Chairman Rob Doodian. History of the T. H I-THE IDEA COMES TO LIFE In 1993, while serving as Executive Vice President for Satellite Distribution at Turner Broadcasting, Scott Weiss became aware of the lack of diversity in the industry, and questioned what was being done about it. He learned that, in fact, there was little industry effort to address the issue, which motivated him to create a platform for doing so.

II-THE TEAM IS FORMED Weiss met with industry leaders on the subject of diversity, including Chuck Hewitt, President, SBCA, Bob Caird, VP at Time Warner in charge of HBO, Matt Blank, President, Showtime Networks, George Bodenheimer, SVP, Sales & Marketing, ESPN, Terry McGuirk, EVP, Turner Broadcasting, and Taylor Howard, Professor, Stanford University. Weiss and Taylor Howard developed a close friendship.

III-THE IDEA IS PRESENTED Weiss presented a concept of creating a nonprofit foundation that would serve the industry through the creation of internships targeting minority students. Interns would have the opportunity to showcase their talents and, through their performance, gain opportunities for full-time employment within the industry.

IV-THE FOUNDATION IS FORMED On February 28th, 1994, the T. Howard Foundation was incorporated and registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Weiss honored Taylor Howard by naming the foundation after him, given his extraordinary technology contributions and his personal belief that satellite television would profoundly impact the world through the sharing of valuable video content, including news and information.

V- LAYING THE GROUNDWORK The first year was dedicated to establishing the Foundation. It was co-located with the SBCS offices outside of Washington, DC. Weiss established the first Board of Directors, raised funds for operations, and held the first Annual Dinner at Tavern on the Green in New York City.

VI- REMEMBERING TAYLOR Taylor Howard remained involved with the Foundation until his death in 2002. He was an American scientist, radio engineer, Stanford University Emeritus Professor, visionary, and inventor of the technology used today by the cable, satellite, and telecommunications industries. His career in radio engineering and space sciences spanned 50 years. The T. Howard Foundation is honored to have Taylor as its namesake. From the Foundation’s inception in 1994 until 2002, he generously donated his time as a member of the Board of Directors and to the THF interns.


Howard Foundation VII-THE FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO GROW Since its first Annual Dinner, the event has honored prominent industry and public leaders committed to the mission of diversity. The Annual Dinner became the primary financial resource for establishing an endowment and supporting the Foundation’s internship program. In addition, the Foundation continued its efforts to expand and develop the board of directors.

VIII-THE FOUNDATION BROADENS ITS MISSION In 2004, the Foundation broadened its mission from satellite companies to “multimedia and entertainment,” including cable operators, telcos, PR firms and advertising agencies. This step opened the doors for the Foundation to have a greater impact on diversity while increasing the number and kinds of internship opportunities made available to diverse students.

IX- FULL SPEED AHEAD When Jo Pamphile came to the Foundation as its President and CEO in 2006, she was given the mandate to “grow and expand” on all fronts. Over the next decade the Foundation: • • • • • • • •

tripled the revenue raised by the Diversity Awards Dinner awarded nearly $300,000 in scholarships to alumni doubled the value of the endowment increased the number of summer internships to nearly 100 expanded internships from a summer to a year-round program added job posting and placement services to its offerings added professional development and career counseling services developed a comprehensive alumni program

The total number of Foundation staff is now eleven: three in administration, five in the Internship Program, and three in Career and Alumni Services.

X- LOOKING AHEAD In 2017, the Foundation placed nearly 180 interns and facilitated the hiring of 94 alums. Since its formation, the Foundation has placed more than 1,200 interns and facilitated 550 hires into the industry, thanks to the partnerships established over the years. Currently, the team is focused on responding to the varied technical needs of the industry in order to target its recruitment and placement efforts. The Foundation values its partners and believes that it will be able to continue to succeed because of its partnerships and the shared commitment to diversity and inclusion.



SHERRY WINSTON Sherry Winston has performed in many of the major concert halls throughout the U.S. including Carnegie Hall, Constitution Hall, Lincoln Center and at the Kennedy Center. She is a musician and accomplished composer, releasing 6 CDs that combine her compositions with innovative arrangements of classic jazz. Sherry has performed at The White House for President and Mrs. Clinton during their last holiday party, and for former President George H.W. Bush at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. She has appeared on Emeril Live, The Today Show, BET, and many other TV shows nationally. She hosted six shows for BET TV, with Lou Rawls and Saxophonist Najee at the San Francisco Jazz Festival. As well, Sherry has been featured in the New York Times, Ebony, Essence, Black Enterprise, Odyssey Couleur, More and other national magazines and newspapers. Some of Sherry’s jazz festivals include The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Jamaica, W.I., Orlando & Mercado Jazz Fest with Ramsey Lewis, 17th & Vine, Kansas City, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Hartford Jazz Fest, Virgin Gorda, Louisville, Riverfest, Nashville, and the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival. On the business side, Sherry worked as National Director of Jazz Promotion at Columbia, Arista, GRP and Elektra-Asylum Records in New York City. She also ran her own Promotion Company and represented Uniworld Advertising Group in Japan. Sherry’s awards include the Women of Power Award, Stamford Urban League, Links Impact Through the Arts Award, Louis Armstrong Award, nomination for the NAACP Image Award, Eubie Blake Award selected by Billy Taylor, 1984 and 1989 Howard University Alumni Award, Cultural Achievement Award by the National Black MBA, WBLS’s Quiet Storm Award, and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Partner in the Arts Award. Sherry is a graduate of Howard University’s College of Fine Arts, School of Music and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Reporter, ABC7/NC8 Anna-Lysa is a two-time Emmy award-winning journalist for her work at WJLATV in Washington, DC. She was a T. Howard Foundation intern in 2011 at Showtime Networks in Program Marketing and in 2012 at Turner Broadcasting, Inc. in Newsgathering. She started her career at WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, VA and then spent more than two years at WLKY-TV in Louisville, KY. While in Kentucky, she received an award from the Associated Press for her continuing coverage of a case involving four young men coined the Misidentified Four.



In 2017, she earned two Emmy awards for her role in a special report on the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and her role in a newscast on a Silver Spring, MD explosion, which left seven dead. A graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC, it was there she took advantage of the opportunity to hone her skills as a journalist with internships in newsrooms like WTOP 103.5 FM, Fox 5 WTTG, and CNN. She graduated in May 2013 with a broadcast journalism degree and minor in Political Science.

LAWRENCE K. JACKSON Reporter & Digital Anchor, NBC News Lawrence K. Jackson is a journalist, producer, public speaker and motivator of the youth. He is currently the newest co-host of NBC's “Stay Tuned,” a twice-daily news show on Snapchat. The program reaches more than 25 million unique monthly viewers on average and has over 5 million subscribers, with three-quarters of its audience under 25 years of age. Originally from Spring Valley, New York, Jackson received his degree in Broadcast Journalism from the top-ranked S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He was a member of the T. Howard Foundation’s Class of 2012 and interned at CBS News in Newsroom Journalism – Sports. His meteoric rise began as one of the hosts for the reboot of MTV's iconic ‘Total Request Live’ and working for Sean “Diddy” Combs’ music cable network, Revolt TV. Throughout his career, Jackson has covered dozens of red carpets, music and film festival coverage and interviewed cultural icons including Usher, Adam Silver, Oprah Winfrey and Donald Trump. His work has been featured on ESPN, ABC and Essence Magazine.





Henry Ahn is responsible for the distribution of Scripps’ portfolio of lifestyle networks – HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel, Travel Channel and Great American Country – and related content across all platforms. Ahn came to Scripps Networks from NBCUniversal.

As President of Distribution, Bob Broussard develops and directs AMC Networks’ distribution strategy, overseeing U.S. and Canada multiplatform content licensing and affiliate marketing of the company’s cable television networks AMC, BBC AMERICA, IFC, SundanceTV, and WE tv; as well as the company’s feature film VOD offerings.

A graduate of Boston College with an MBA from Fordham University, Ahn is widely-respected as an industry leader with the ability to influence and maintain key relationships at all levels. He has earned numerous industry honors and was inducted into CableFAX’s Sales Hall of Fame and named one of CableFAX’s “Most Influential Minorities in Cable.”


Bernadette Aulestia is executive vice president, Global Distribution, for Home Box Office, Inc., overseeing all distribution operations of the company’s services and platforms worldwide. Internationally, she is responsible for the operations of HBO branded networks in 67 countries. Domestically, she leads distribution efforts for the premium networks HBO and Cinemax through cable, satellite and telco companies, and in the critical lodging business. Aulestia oversees HBO’s Affiliate Marketing group, which is responsible for the acquisition and retention of subscribers across all distributor partners. Aulestia also heads digital distribution efforts, including the streaming products HBO GO, MAX GO, the newly launched HBO NOW and HBO Home Entertainment. She was named to this position in June 2015.

Named to this post in 2006, Broussard previously served as EVP of business affairs, where he negotiated numerous high-profile transactions including affiliation, acquisitions, and divestitures agreements, as well as rights agreements with professional sports teams. Broussard joined AMC Networks in 1989. Prior to joining AMC Networks, Broussard was a corporate lawyer with the New York law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison, where he specialized in mergers, acquisitions, and financing transactions.


Founder & CEO Carlsen Resources, Inc. Ann Carlsen is founder and CEO of Carlsen Resources, Inc. (CRI), a premier provider of executive search and consulting services in global cable, media, entertainment, technology and diversity. Since 1989, CRI has placed more than 2,700 executives in critical industry positions. A highly regarded leader and champion of workplace diversity, Ann has been honored by NCTA (Distinguished Vanguard Award), WICT (Woman of the Year), and NAMIC (L. Patrick Mellon Award). In 2012, she was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame.

As Senior Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer of the Interpublic Group (NYSE: IPG), one of the world's leading organizations of advertising agencies and marketing services companies, Mr. Carroll’s responsibilities at IPG include the world-wide controllership and accounting functions, the global shared service division, corporate budget and forecasting, financial ERP systems including implementations team, the process improvement program office, the business controls group and the regional financial teams. Mr. Carroll is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the New York State Society of CPAs. He earned his Bachelor of Science with honors in accounting and business law from the Saint Frances College in New York.


President, National Advertising Sales AMC Networks As President of National Advertising Sales, Scott Collins oversees national, digital and branded entertainment sales efforts for AMC Networks’ cable television networks AMC, BBC AMERICA, IFC, SundanceTV, WE tv, as well as BBC World News. Named to this post in 2017, Collins previously served as EVP of AMC Networks National Advertising Sales. He joined AMC Networks in 2008 as SVP, Advertising Sales of WE tv. Prior to AMC Networks, Collins held positions in advertising sales at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and A&E Networks. He started his career as a research analyst for Nielsen Media Research. He has been named Sales Executive of the Year by CableFAX and has been inducted into the CableFAX Sales Hall of Fame.


EVP & Chief Marketing Officer Charter Communications In his role as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Charter Communications, Jonathan Hargis oversees the company's full range of sales and marketing activities across the nation. Prior to joining Charter in April 2012, Mr. Hargis served as Executive Vice President of Marketing at Cablevision, where he played a key role in developing the company's marketing approach and competitive positioning. Before Cablevision, he held a number of leadership roles at AT&T. Mr. Hargis has served for many years on the board of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) and has chaired the CTAM board.


Chief Revenue Officer Univision Communications Inc. Tonia O’Connor drives an integrated content monetization strategy and oversees all of UCI’s revenue streams – linear and digital advertising, content distribution as well as new revenue development.



O’Connor is spearheading UCI’s development of new opportunities that advance consumer engagement and create a more effective overall experience for marketers and distributors. She has led UCI’s efforts to expand the reach of its portfolio of brands and content availability by creating new consumer products and securing valuable shelf space with both traditional and emerging distributors, and social media platforms. She is active in industry organizations, has received multiple awards and recognitions, and serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.



COLMAN DOMINGO — GUEST PRESENTER Colman Domingo is an Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League and NAACP Award-nominated, OBIE and Lucille Lortel Award-winning actor, writer and director. He stars on AMC's Fear The Walking Dead as Victor Strand and is currently developing a one-hour drama for AMC which he will write and executive produce. Domingo stars in the upcoming Barry Jenkins film If Beale Street Could Talk and the Sundance hit Assassination Nation directed by Sam Levinson. He is the co-book writer of the new musical Summer: The Donna Summer Musical that will open on Broadway this spring.

ROBERT RODRIGUEZ — GUEST PRESENTER Chairman and Founder El Rey Network Robert Rodriguez is a film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor and musician. He is also the Founder and Chairman of El Rey Network, a 24-hour, English-language lifestyle network. Rodriguez has written, produced, directed, and edited a series of successful films including El Mariachi, From Dusk Till Dawn, the Spy Kids franchise, Sin City, and Machete. In 2012, Rodriguez created El Rey Network. Now in 45 million homes, El Rey's originals slate includes “Lucha Underground,” "The Director's Chair,” and “Man at Arms: Art of War.” El Rey Network's lineup also showcases a range of iconic films and series including genre, cult classics, action and horror/sci-fi. Rodriguez is currently collaborating with director James Cameron on the film Alita: Battle Angel, which Cameron is producing and Rodriguez is directing. The film will premiere theatrically December 2018. He resides in Austin, Texas, home to Troublemaker Studios, a production facility of which he is co-owner and president.

Falco holds an M.B.A. in finance and a Bachelor of Business Administration, also in finance, from Iona College. He received an honorary doctorate from Iona College in 2001. Falco sits on the board of Ronald McDonald House and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Named in honor of our founding Chairman Emeritus, Scott Weiss, the scholarships provide THF alumni financial assistance for their future academic and professional pursuits. This merit-based scholarship is used for tuition, books, training, conferences, workshops, and other academic-related expenses that prepare T. Howard alumni for the media and entertainment industry. The following highlights our 2017 scholarship recipients: Tatiana Cadet Viacom ('17) New York University — My experience with T. Howard and this award will advance my career goals by assisting me with applying my academic learnings to real-world situations. As tuition costs increase and post-graduate financial assistance decreases, it has been a challenge for me to afford school. The Scott Weiss Scholarship will help me afford my last semester and develop a thorough, wellresearched capstone project that tackles an industry problem that I can share with future employers in the media and entertainment industry. Jin Kim Viacom: Comedy Central ('16), NBCUniversal ('17) University of Michigan - Ann Arbor — My Scott Weiss Scholarship will go towards tuition at the University of Michigan. Since I immigrated to the United States, media has played a large role in my life. From watching Blues Clues to learn English as a child, to interning at Viacom and NBCUniversal, media has been an ever-present constant in my life. Thank you to the T. Howard Foundation for allowing me to continue my pursuit of increasing diverse representation throughout the entertainment industry. Cierra Lockett Viacom: Nickelodeon ('13) Loyola Marymount University — Receiving a Scott Weiss Scholarship will help me fund my third-year MFA thesis film, a preview of a television pilot I wrote this semester. Not only does this give me the chance to focus on academics and internships, but it will enable me to amplify my portfolio when I pitch to networks and studios. I am happy to represent AfricanAmerican women screenwriters and T. Howard in the entertainment industry.


Kevina Newton Turner ('17) New York University — I'm grateful for the Scott Weiss Scholarship award because it will allow me to pay off some of my student loans. Initially I was planning on starting my payment plans after graduation but this will allow me to begin sooner. I'm honored to have my merit honors recognized by the Foundation and to alleviate my financial burden. None of this would be possible without my participation in the T. Howard Foundation internship program. Thank you. Maitlyn Phan Viacom: Nickelodeon ('17) University of Southern California — By helping to pay off student debt, the Scott Weiss Scholarship award allows me to embark on my entrepreneurial aspirations sooner rather than later. My goal is to address diversity in entertainment by working with Asian Pacific American creatives in new media spaces by starting an agency geared toward helping APA creators and businesses reach wider audiences. Without this assistance, I would risk being left behind by an industry that's rapidly evolving. Hongyu Zhou Facebook ('17) University of Pennsylvania — I am grateful to receive the Scott Weiss Scholarship award which will provide new opportunities for me. I am extremely thankful for every door that T. Howard has opened for me, from career to scholarship opportunities. Prior to T. Howard, I struggled to find mentors and possibilities as an AsianAmerican in the media industry. T. Howard has provided me with the resources, skills, and confidence to move forward to pursue my dreams, and I cannot thank the program enough for that.
