Q: Is it true that Lindsay Lohan is dating “How I Met Your Mother” star Jason Segel? — Barbara S., via e-mail A: Lindsay, who split from girlfriend Samantha Ronson earlier this year, has taken to her Twitter account to dispel all rumors of romance. She brands the rumors as ridiculous, stating she was merely “meeting at a co-worker’s home.” As of this writing, the project they are working on together is unknown. ••• Q: I can remember when we had new episodes for TV shows from fall to spring. Now the networks have winter finales for their shows. Why is that? — Theo J., via e-mail A: There are a few reasons for this new, “winter fi-

nale” trend. One, of course, is money. Many people are traveling and very busy during the holiday season, so the networks don’t want to “waste” new episodes when fewer people are watching. This is also a good time to air holiday-themed programs. Another reason is they want to give midseason shows a chance to strut their stuff. For instance, Fox put “Glee” on hiatus Dec. 9 (to return April 13), “Fringe” takes a break on Feb. 4 (to return April 1), and “Lie to Me” returns in late spring as well. This makes room for shows like the Mark Valley action-drama “Human Target,” reality series “Our Little Genius,” thriller “Past Life” and comedy “Sons of Tucson.” Fox is reporting that “‘Til Death” will be back in the new year as well. ••• Q: I absolutely love Michelle Forbes in just about every role she is in. What can I watch her in next? — Marti F., Altoona, Pa. A: Michelle — who turns 45 in January — has quite a full plate. The “Prison Break,” “True Blood” and “In Treatment” actress can be seen next on ION Television in the drama “Durham County.” Season Two begins on Jan. 3, and Michelle comes to the show as Dr. Penelope Verrity, an even more dangerous nemesis to Mike Sweeney than serial killer Ray Prager. Count me in! ••• Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. • There’s an interesting story behind the name of the Caribbean island of Curacao. It seems that explorer Amerigo Vespucci had several sailors on his ship who were very seriously ill with scurvy, so he dropped them off on the island, assuming they would die. However, the abandoned sailors feasted on fresh fruit, thereby ingesting the vitamin C that cured the disease and saved their lives. The word “curacao” means “cure” in Portuguese. © 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Road Map Q: My sister has a map of Western New York that was published in about 1915 by the Automobile Club of Rochester. It is backed with a type of linen and ap-

pears to be in excellent condition considering its age. What do you think it might be worth? — Nancy, Rochester, N.Y. A: I suggest you contact an expert in the field, Jackie Grace of Grace Galleries, a business that specializes in antique maps. You can contact Jackie at Grace Galleries, The Chart House of Cundy’s Harbor, 20 West Cundy’s Point Road, Harpswell, ME 04079, or e-mail her at jackie@gracegalleries.com. Check out the Web site at www.gracegalleries.com. Incidentally, I contacted two collectors who agreed that your map is probably worth in the $50-$75 range. ••• Q: I have a Heddon deluxe fishing rod, 4 ounces, No. 2541. I have searched the Internet and can’t seem to find any information on this two-piece pole with carrying case. The condition is close to perfect, and I hope you can help me. — Steve, Newark, N.J. A: One of the best sources for information about fishing reels is The Old Reel Collectors Association, which was founded in 1990 with the purpose of providing “education through the collection and distribution of historical and technical data regarding fishing reels, their development and their inventors and manufacturers from the earliest times through the present day.” The contact information for the club is http://www.orcaonline.org, or e-mail at reelnewseditor@yahoo.com. This is an excellent group, and I am certain that its members can help you. © 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides with toothpicks. This will eliminate the need to slice off a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-out portion. It works well for most types of cakes.

2009 Season Highlights Men, moments and great deeds that will be remembered from NASCAR, circa 2009: —Jimmie Johnson became the first driver in NASCAR history to win four consecutive championships. He broke a tie with Cale Yarborough, who won three straight (1976-78). —At age 50, Mark Martin, competing full-time for the first time in three years, finished second in the Sprint Cup standings. Martin, who has never won a championship, was the runner-up for the fifth time in his career. —Ron Hornaday Jr. became the first four-time champion in the history (1995-present) of the Camping World Truck Series. —Kyle Busch won a total of 20 races in NASCAR’s socalled three “major touring series”: four in Sprint Cup, nine in Nationwide and seven in Truck. —Brad Keselowski pulled an upset at Talladega that required him to tangle with Carl Edwards on the final straight of the final lap. Edwards’ Ford left the ground, ripped through the catch fencing and tumbled over and over numerous times. Rules were changed and fencing raised and bolstered for the latter race at the track. —Joey Logano’s New Hampshire victory made him the youngest driver ever to win at NASCAR’s top level. —Hendrick Motorsports took the top three spots in the Cup standings, with Johnson first, Martin second and Jeff Gordon third. —Tony Stewart led the regular-season point standings, and both he and Ryan Newman made the Chase in Stewart’s first season as a team owner. —Matt Kenseth won the season’s first two races but struggled afterward, and like Kyle Busch, failed to make the Chase. Kenseth’s victory in the Daytona 500 was a first for owner Jack Roush. —The leading race winner of 2008, Carl Edwards, failed to win at the Cup level in 2009. —The sport’s most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., had the worst season of his career and was the only Hendrick Motorsports driver who failed to make the Chase. —NASCAR’s suspension of driver Jeremy Mayfield for alleged substance abuse spilled over into the courts and touched off an unseemly series of lurid allegations from both sides. —Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Junior Johnson, William H.G. France and William C. France were selected as the first Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. five inductees in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, currently under construction in Charlotte and scheduled to open in May 2010. —Juan Pablo Montoya, from Bogota, Colombia, qualified for the Chase and blossomed into NASCAR’s first foreign-born star. The most improved driver in the Sprint Cup Series was an Australian, Marcos Ambrose.

• Go Green Tip: Here’s a little-practiced fact in the life of today’s fashion: Many clothing items can be repaired. Do it right away, though, so the item can go back into the usable clothing circulation. The longer it sits, the greater the odds of it being replaced instead, making the original, repairable item just another piece of clutter. • “Use the clothes-detergent cap (to measure detergent), then wash it in the very same load. The cap will stay nice and clean — no liquid soap everywhere.” — Mrs. B., via e-mail • “If you have a noisy bed after you purchased a new mattress and box springs (it never was noisy before), it might be your bed rails. Cover them with carpet. We nailed ours on all over, which was easy, and the noise stopped. Our box spring apparently was not made very well at the bottom. This really works.” — C.F. in Indiana

• “Save the zippered plastic bags that bedding and curtains come in to store or organize items. My young children often need a clean change of clothes when we are on the go. I pack complete extra outfits (including underwear and socks) for them in the small bags. They work perfectly. The bags are sturdy and reusable for years. I keep these packages tucked away in the car or in their school backpacks, and I send one to the sitter. I also keep one in the car filled with socks for those summer days when they are wearing sandals and we decide to go to an indoor play place.” — A.S., via e-mail • If you receive a set of scented soaps for the holidays, you can get a longer use out of them as drawer scents before you use them as soap. Winter Pet Safety at the New Year DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As a Southerner recently transplanted to the Midwest, I’m worried about how the cold weather will affect my Chihuahua, “Freddie.” Will I be able to take him outside for walks? — Kylie in Chicago DEAR KYLIE: Smaller dogs do have a harder time in bitterly cold weather, so I would carefully gauge when and how often Freddie can go outside. Ask neighbors and friends for advice on taking dogs out in the cold. Meantime, a few basics should be followed for cold-weather pet care. • Make sure Freddie has a warm bed to curl up in, and that he stays well-hydrated during winter months. • Purchase a doggie sweater and booties and make sure Freddie wears them every time you go outside. • Keep him on a leash during walks, and monitor him carefully at all times. • If Freddie is shivering or limping, take him inside immediately, warm him up, and inspect his paws for cuts or frostbite (the frostbitten area will be colder than the rest of his paw). • For really cold, snowy or icy days, keep a pee pad inside for Freddie to use, and even designate an indoor “go” area if possible. Sweaters or wraps and booties are available at local pet stores or online. For indoor eliminating, some small-dog owners actually use litter boxes.

It may take a little training but can be invaluable on really cold days. Finally, talk to Freddie’s veterinarian about your concerns. He or she will have valuable advice on keeping Freddie healthy and happy as you both acclimate to the colder climate. © 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Breathing Tips for COPD DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I remember reading something you wrote a long time ago about the proper way to breathe for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I didn’t need the information then. I do now. Until recently, I smoked more than a pack of cigarettes a day, for 35 years. It caught up with me all of a sudden. I have COPD. I need you to repeat those recommendations again. Will you? — T.R. ANSWER: Sure. (For readers: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, is emphysema and chronic bronchitis.) Pursed-lip breathing is one technique that helps. Draw your lips into the whistling position when you breathe out. The lips are in the right position if the outgoing air makes a hissing sound as it passes through them. Pursed-lip breathing keeps the airways opened so all stale air is emptied from the lungs. In people with COPD, on exhalation, the airways collapse. That leaves them partially filled with old air containing little oxygen. By getting all the oxygen-low air out of the lungs, fresh air fills them and a person isn’t shortchanged on oxygen. Exhale slowly, twice the length of time it takes to inhale. You have to train yourself to use your diaphragm to its maximum capacity. The diaphragm is the horizontal muscle that separates the chest from the ab-
