• B.G. in Minnesota writes: “If you want to freshen up drawers used to store sheets and pillowcases, or your luggage, just place a dryer sheet inside. They really do leave a nice scent, and they also are great for dusting jobs!” • To control the level of garlic in a recipe, add it at the beginning for a lighter taste and at the end for a stronger taste. To get garlic out of the clove quickly, instead of tedious peeling, just smash it and squeeze it out. • “The best cure for a foggy windshield is a chalkboard eraser. You can purchase them at office-supply stores. They can be stored easily in your glove box. No window cleaner required for a quick clear windshield, and you can see well afterward. A clean windshield is a safety issue!” -- M.T. in South Carolina • Fill measuring cups with hot water and empty quickly before measuring sticky substances like honey or peanut butter. It will slide out much easier. • Banana trick: For faster ripening, leave bunches together and store in a bag. For slower ripening, separate the bananas. They will ripen faster if stored near apples or citrus fruit. Also, remember that just because the outside is getting brown spots, the inside isn’t necessarily going soft. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Trade-In Time By Ann Bare

When it comes time to buy a new car, some people sell their old one while others use it for a trade-in. While selling usually brings the best price, trading in a vehicle is a lot less hassle. The dealership usually handles all of the paperwork for the trade-in, and all you have to do is sign on the dotted line. Dealerships won’t

pay as much for trade-ins due to the costs incurred in selling them, but you can get a fair price by prepping your car for the trade beforehand. Clean sells, so clean your car, inside and out. Wash and wax the exterior. Vacuum and dust the interior. Clean the engine and top off the fluids. Car still not up to your standards? Have it detailed. While it will cost you, a good detail job can get you hundreds more in trade-in value. Condition sells, so make sure your car

December 5 - 11, 2013 is in good condition. Have your vehicle inspected by a quality mechanic and make any necessary minor repairs. Have the oil changed and the tires rotated. Gather your maintenance records, along with a vehicle history report and an inspection report, to prove that you have indeed taken care of your car. Do your homework and research the trade-in value of your car. There are several websites to assist you with this endeavor and you will probably uncover a low, average and high retail value. Don’t overestimate the trade-in value of your car. Chances are the dealership will give you the average trade-in value, unless it has a lot of wear and tear. In that case, you might receive a low trade-in value. Once you know the trade-in value, you can determine where the best deals are and negotiate a good deal. If the price offered for your trade-in seems too low, you can use the knowledge and documentation you have gathered to get a better deal.

• It was American author Erica Jong who made the following sage observation: “Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t.” • Jon Bon Jovi is probably best known for his eponymous ‘80s hair band, but he’s also quite a philanthropist, working on behalf of organizations including the Special Olympics, the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. In 2011, the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation opened a restaurant called JBJ Soul Kitchen, in which patrons pay only what they can afford, or can even volunteer in lieu of payment. • Those who study such things say that all mammals, from rodents to elephants, urinate for approximately 21 seconds. This now is known as the “Law of Urination.” • A poll conducted by Gallup determined that 42 percent of Americans believe that people are sometimes possessed by the devil. • Scientists unearthed frozen 30,000-year-old plant tissue from fossil squirrel burrows in northeaster Siberia. This would not be remarkable, except for what came next: Researchers thawed the seeds and planted them. The seeds germinated and grew, producing viable seeds of their own, making [SET ITAL]Silene stenophylla[END ITAL] the oldest viable multicellular living organisms.

• If you die without any friends or family to attend your funeral, Amsterdam is apparently the place to do it. In that city, a civil servant will provide flowers and a poet will compose a eulogy in verse for those who would otherwise make an unaccompanied and unmourned final journey.   © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Try Medicines First for Enlarged Prostate DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have to trot to the bathroom many times during the day and many more times at night. Is this due to my prostate gland? I’m 74 and wasn’t bothered by bathroom visits a year ago. Does this mean surgery for me? How do I know if this is prostate cancer? -- R.R. ANSWER: Odds are you have benign prostatic hyperplasia, the official name for a large prostate gland. In their 40s, a quarter of males have a gland that’s larger than normal. In their 70s, 80 percent of men have an enlarged continued oN next page...

gland. Not all these men have symptoms like repeated trips to the bathroom, a hard time starting the urinary stream and a decrease in the force of the stream. The prostate gland lies directly below the urinary bladder, and the bladder’s drainage tube, the urethra, runs through the gland. A large gland presses on the bladder and obstructs the urethra. That’s why many men with a large gland have to run to the bathroom so often -- they cannot completely empty their bladder. You don’t have to jump to surgery right off the bat. Medicines often solve the problem. One class of medicines stops the forceful bladder contractions that signal an urgent need to void. Uroxatral, Flomax and Rapaflo are examples of this drug family. Their effect is seen within a week. Another family of drugs shrinks the gland. Avodart and Proscar are two such medicines. Their effect isn’t seen for up to six months. Combining both classes of drug is another method of treatment. If medicine therapy fails, a variety of surgical procedures can remedy the problem. You don’t know if an enlarged gland has cancer cells in it. The PSA blood test, flawed as it is, provides some evidence for cancer. Biopsy of the gland is the ultimate cancer test. A urologist will solve this problem for you. The booklet on prostate enlargement and prostate cancer deals with these common male problems in detail. • On Dec. 19, 1732, Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia first published “Poor Richard’s Almanack.” The book, filled with proverbs preaching industry and prudence, was published continuously for 25 years and became one of the most popular publications in colonial America. • On Dec. 17, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” is published. Dickens never lost momentum as a writer, churning out major novels every year or two, often in serial form. Among his most important works are “David Copperfield” (1850), “Great Expectations” (1861) and “A Tale of Two Cities” (1859). • On Dec. 18, 1912, after three years of digging in the Piltdown gravel pit in Sussex, England, amateur archaeologist Charles Dawson announces the discovery of two skulls that appear to belong to a primitive hominid and ancestor of man. • On Dec. 21, 1945, Gen. George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. 3rd Army, dies from injuries suffered not in battle, but in a freak car accident. He was 60 years old. Descended from a long line of military men, Patton graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1909. • On Dec. 22, 1956, a baby gorilla named Colo enters the world at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio, becoming the firstever gorilla born in captivity. She went on to become a mother, grandmother, and in 1996, a great-grandmother to Timu, the first surviving infant gorilla conceived by artificial insemination. Colo is still alive today. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

December 5 - 11, 2013 THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Safer Holiday Lighting Q: Please remind your readers that when hanging up holiday lights outside, to be careful when setting up and working on ladders. They need to be aware of potential overhead hazards like power lines and make sure not to make contact with them. -- An Electrician in San Jose, Calif. A: That’s an important point to remember, and thank you for sending it. Setting up outdoor lights and displays can be hard work, and it’s easy to forget

December 5 - 11, 2013

Volume 8, Week 49 a few basic safety steps while hurrying to get strings connected and secured in place. Here are some things to remember: • Always check overhead before setting up ladders, using poles or other equipment, and make sure power lines, tree branches and other hazards are not in your path. • When planning outdoor displays, include the layout of extension cords and other electrical equipment in your design, so they are placed away from frequently traveled paths. • Use covered GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlets to reduce the risk of fire and shock, and be sure to not overload circuits. • Check all the light strings you plan to use, and make sure they’re rated for outdoor use, are not frayed and have no burnt bulbs. • Don’t work alone: Have a helper to brace the ladder, help unravel light strings and so on. • If you plan to place decorations on the rooftop, make sure you secure yourself with a safety harness and rope. HOME TIP: Consider replacing traditional Christmas lights with LED lights. They cost more, but last longer and save a lot of energy. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com.
