• It was noted American playwright and essayist Arthur Miller who gave the following sage advice: “Don’t be seduced into thinking that that which does not make a profit is without value.” • In the early 20th century, celebrated racehorse Man o’ War won 20 of his 21 career races. Interestingly, his one loss (often attributed to a terrible start and the extra weight he was carrying) was to a horse named Upset. • Statistically speaking, you probably live within 320 miles of the place you were born. • Have you ever experienced a social situation in which you have to introduce someone, but you can’t quite remember their name? In Scotland, there’s a word to describe the hesitation caused by that moment of panic: a tartle. • Getting married soon, but working with a tight

budget? If you’re considering cutbacks, you might not want to put the honeymoon on the chopping block. Researchers have found that couples who go on a honeymoon tend to have longer-lasting marriages than those who skip the trip -- no matter how much or how little you spend. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Ombré Effect

December 1-7, 2016

Volume 11, Week 43

By Tresa Erickson

One of the hottest trends in hair coloring is the ombré effect, a graduation in color from roots to ends. The ombré effect is also hot in the interior design world, with many designers incorporating it into accessories and rooms. Interested in giving it a go in your home? Here’s how. Select three colors, preferably one light, one medium and one dark. For a subtle look, use three colors from the same color family, perhaps even from the same paint

swatch. For a bold look, use whatever colors you desire. Prep the room for paint and divide the walls into three sections. Select a color for each section, dark to light or vice versa. Working on one wall at a time, paint each section the appropriate color. While the paint is still wet, lightly mist the edges of each band of color with water and use a dry brush to blend the colors together. Hold the brush at an angle and make small X’s. Keep blending until you achieve the desired result. You may also use a sea sponge or a rag to blend the paint. The trick is to move the paint in one general direction, either up or down depending upon how you want the colors to flow. Some experts also suggest mixing each of the paints and applying a thin band of the mixed colors between the solid colors to help with the blending and provide more paint to move around. If painting an entire room ombré does not suit you, why not try it in smaller doses. It’s easy to do with spray paint. With a

few cans of spray paint and a little knowhow, you can transform almost anything into an ombré masterpiece—furniture, mirrors, frames, vases and more. If it can be painted, you can make it ombré. First, prep the piece for paint and select your colors. Then apply the lightest color first all over the piece. While the paint is still wet, stand farther away and apply a light coat of the second color, making sure you move in one direction, either up or down depending upon your preference. Repeat with the third color, standing a bit father away. Continue in this fashion until you get the look you want. If this is your first time working with paint, you might want to do a few practice runs to get a feel for creating the ombré effect. Try it on a scrap piece of drywall or a cardboard box. Practice until you have a real feel for the effect and then give it a go! And, don’t forget. The ombré effect is not intended to be perfect. It is a graduation of color, which can vary around the room or piece. The ombré effect isn’t just for hair. You can have it in your home on the walls, furniture, mirrors and more!

Tales of Feral Cats

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to add to your recent columns about feral cats. Maybe some can’t be tamed, but my friends and family would disagree. I recently visited with friends in North Carolina and met their beautiful cat, “Stormy.” Their story is this: They had been feeding this feral cat for some time outside, and of course, he wouldn’t come near them. Then one night they heard a howling outside. Looking out, they saw a mountain lion or panther, whatever they call them there, threatening Stormy. They opened the door, and Stormy came in, and never went outside again. Another story I have is of a feral cat that was “adopted” by my son’s chickens! He has six chickens in his backyard in Florida, and one day someone dropped off a very young kitten. He got into the coop, but instead of running or attacking, the kitten assumed those chickens were his parents! Now a full-grown cat, he remains mostly feral and won’t come inside my son’s house, but he hangs out in the chicken coop

daily with his new family. Hope your readers enjoy the stories! -- John S., via email DEAR JOHN: What amazing stories! I’m glad both cats found loving homes and new families. Thank you for sharing them. It’s rare for feral cats to be coaxed inside and become fully domesticated cats that are comfortable around humans. But for those that do find a home -- even if they never quite cross the threshold of the house -- life can be happier and more rewarding for them as well as the humans who care for them. Set aside. 2. Prick bottom and sides of crust with fork. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Immediately brush bottom and sides of hot crust with light coating of egg white. Reset oven to 425 F. 3. Meanwhile, in large bowl, combine granulated sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon. Toss in apples and lemon juice. Cover with waxed paper and microwave on High 12 minutes, stirring halfway through. Spoon filling into crust. Sprinkle pecan topping over filling.

TIP: For a true homemade presentation, use our trick to remove the crust from its foil pan and place in a 9-inch pie plate: Gently fold back foil around edge of frozen crust and pull slightly on the crust to remove from foil. Transfer to pie plate and thaw as directed. The Right Tires By Tresa Erickson

You have always been a car owner until a few years ago when you decided to make a change and purchased a truck. So far, you have enjoyed owning a truck, especially with all of the extra room you have to haul things around. Recently, though, you have noticed that your truck doesn’t drive as well. Have you checked out the tires? They might be past their prime and could very well be at fault. Truck tires come in four main types: off-road, allterrain, performance and highway. Off-road tires are designed for traversing all kinds of terrain from snow to sand to rock. All-terrain tires are designed for on-road performance with additional grip for dirt, snow and wet surfaces. Performance tires are designed for pavement traction. Highway tires are designed for normal,

everyday driving. To choose the right tires for your truck, you need to think about where you drive it most often. You probably don’t want highway tires if you spend most of your weekends in rugged territory. On the other hand, if all you do is drive around town on the weekends, then highway tires might be the right choice for you. Once you have an idea of the type of tires you need, you can start looking for the best deals. Shop around, and if you want better performance on the road, look for tires made from high-quality material. Don’t forget to check your owner’s manual for the load index. Your new tires should be the right load index for your truck. No one can choose the right truck tires for you. Do your continued on page 15

homework. Know the differences between the four basic types and be honest with yourself as to where you drive. Purchase the best set of tires you can afford in the proper load index for your truck.

Why Is Alcohol Banned With Antibiotics? DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making
